Chapter Seven: Ambushed

“How much further is it?” Imoen asked, a note of tiredness in her voice.

They had left the Friendly Arm Inn that morning and for the better part of the day they had followed the Lion’s Way, heading south towards Beregost.

“Quit your whining child, we shall be there soon enough.” Viconia replied, a note of annoyance in her voice.

Jaheira gave Viconia a venomous stare, but before either of them could start insulting each other once more, Leen spoke. “It shouldn’t be much longer Immie.”

She glared at both Jaheira and Viconia in turn, mentally telling them that they will get along, at least for the sake of the group. However, when her gaze fell on Viconia, the Drow merely smiled and winked at her.

Leen blushed at this attention. She turned away, hoping that Viconia hadn’t noticed.

Silently, they resumed their walk to Beregost. Leen and Imoen were up front leading the party, Khalid and Jaheira were walking a short distance behind them. They kept a sharp eye on the road ahead and on the trees and bushes on either side of the road. It was as though they expected to be attacked at any moment. Viconia, who was walking alone, was positioned at the rear of the group.

Leen heard a nearby bush move slightly. It was as though something within it had moved. Suddenly, she heard a similar sound to this, but this time it was coming from the other side of the road.

She glanced at Imoen and one look told her that she had heard it too. Quickly, she placed her hand on the hilt of her bastard sword and slowly, she began to draw it from it’s scabbard.

There was a sudden rush of noise and movement as several men in leather armour burst out from behind bushes and tress. Each was carrying long swords and some had long bows.

Leen tried counting the men clad in leather armour, but soon she stopped. They were constantly moving around their prey, making it impossible to get an exact amount without exposing yourself to them.

“These must be the bandits that are plaguing the Coast Way!” She heard Jaheira shout. Quickly the rest of the group prepared themselves for battle.

Without warning, the men charged. Leen moved to her side, intending to put herself in between Imoen and two of the bandits that where charging in their direction.

The first bandit swung his sword directly at Leen’s unprotected head. However, using her own sword as a shield, she caught this blow easily. Holding the hilt of her sword with two hands, she pushed her sword against his, causing him to lose balance slightly, presenting Leen with a perfect attack opportunity. When the bandit fell backwards, lowering his guard as he tried to keep his balance, she lunged forward with her sword. It struck the man in his chest, piercing his armour and skin, cutting deep into him. The bandit coughed up blood as the blade pierced into his lungs, she pulled her blade free from his body and turned to face her next opponent.

As the body of the now dead bandit struck the ground, the blade of Leen’s sword struck that of her attacker’s. For a couple of minutes they both moved back and fourth, their swords locked in a pattern of aggressive attacks and defensive blokes.

Leen sidestepped to the left to avoid a particularly vicious attack from her opponent. She stood with her sword held in one hand and the other behind her back, the bandit, foolishly thinking this was just another combat technique, charged at her. In a set of blurry movements, she pulled her hand from behind her back and with a flick of her wrist, the throwing dagger in her hand flew through the air, striking the bandit in the throat, killing him instantly.

Leen heard someone shouting a warning from somewhere behind her, she turned to find out who. As she turned, pain exploded in her shoulder, an arrow had pierced her armour. She watched as blood poured out of the open wound, soaking the fabric of her light blue tunic that she wore under her armour. The pain caused her to fall down to her knees. She saw the blurry outline of a bandit rushing forward to end her life. A dark shape stepped in front of her, blocking her attacker. Before she could figure out who it was, she fell to the ground, a pool of her own blood forming around her.

As she slowly fell into unconsciousness, she was vaguely aware of the sounds of combat coming from somewhere nearby. She felt someone gently shaking her. The last thing she heard before darkness overwhelmed her was Imoen’s anguished sobs of, “Leen, please hang on.”

Aw.

Leen isn't used to being center of attention, I suppose! :)

Oh, I like you fight-scenes. Action-packed.

At heart Leen is a very shy girl who finds the attension she is recieving from Viconia very embarrsing.
