managing to squeeze this in before the end of the quiz...

------------

All of the next day, Anomen held his tounge, unless spoken to. Both his companions noticed it.

At last, around three in the afternoon, Blaine said:

"You've been very quiet today."

"I....have been thinking," said Anomen, softly. "I have had a number of things to think about."

Blaine and Tanya exchanged a glance; wondering if he had heard them the night before. He was not prepared to admit to this, of course.

"Are you allright?" Tanya asked him. There was genuine concern in her voice, and Anomen heard it.

"Aye, lady, thank you for asking. I shall be well."

Tanya stopped dead and stared at him in amazement. She was not used to being called a lady by anyone, and to hear it from Anomen was a double shock.

Before anybody could begin to speak, they suddenly heard the unmistakable crash and cry of battle. A deep throated voice--an Orc's, perhaps?--and many higher pitched cries.

The three adventurers exchanged a glance, and set off at a run.

They came to a small but deep dip between two hills, and saw a wooden cabin with a pair of poor folk in it's doorway. The man wielded a small axe, the woman a kitchen knife. They were surrounded by five goblins, and over the next hill they could hear the deep voice still uttering hoarse battle cries, and a chorus of more goblin voices.

Blaine swore, and Anomen and Tanya called upon their respective gods as they charged to the attack.

They made short work of the goblins, having the advantage of surprise. As he pounded in the skull of one of them, Anomen saw Blaine's sword become a blur of liquid metal as he struck down three of the goblins almost at once. Tanya took out the other at the knees, then fall upon it, weapon raised.

Anomen was momentarily torn between asking the peasants what had drawn the monsters here, and the sounds of battle over the next hill. Blaine made the decision for him by charging up the hill. Anomen dashed after, clanking in his armor. They stared in amazement at the sight of the battle below them....

The road to the abyss may be paved with good intentions, but it is those with bad intentions that race down that road as fast as they can.

Never, ever assume that someone is asleep or still under anesthesia. I embarrassed a couple of nurses that way.

Nice description, short and sweet. But shouldn't it be 'fell upon it?'

I don't think you need ';' in here either ',' or nothing

alright

It is a bit awkward.

fallen

Yippee! They finally got into a bit of real action. Nicely done. And our hero starts to connect with people, finally.

He's obviously taking what he overheard to heart.

Ack...another real cliffhanger. I'll just have to be patient and wait until the next quiz to find out what they saw. ;)
