Adrian: Baldur's Gate

Chapter 29.

Adrian's eyes narrowed. He had faced enough would be assassins now to become accustomed to them, or perhaps resigned was better.

Molkar looked a powerful fighter. He had a Dwarf warrior with him, a human cleric, and a Gnome mage.

The Gnome was already mirror imaged, and he and the human cleric were casting spells.

Using a wand, Xzar dropped a fireball in their midst, which disrupted the casting of the cleric and wounded all of them save the Gnome. His counterspell was horror, and it sent Safana running; but the others stood firm.

Kagain charged his fellow dwarf and they fought tooth and nail, axes clashing loudly.

Xzar and Edwin finally took advantage of the scrolls from the corpse of that madman Narcillicus Harwilliger Neen, and summoned some jellies to fight for them. Suddenly Molkar and his cleric friend found themselves slowed and in pain.

Adrian's crossbow bolts took down the Gnome's mirror images, but not before the foe got off an Aganazar's scorcher, and singed Adrian badly. By then, though, Viconia had closed the distance to the Gnome, and started pounding him down.

Wincing, Adrian began striking the slowed Molkar and his cleric friend with crossbow bolts. Korgan finished off the enemy Dwarf and then added his axe to Adrian's crossbow bolts, and within minutes it was over.

They decided to camp there for the night.

"We worked together well today," Edwin said. "Neen's spells proved useful."

Xzar nodded but did not otherwise reply.

"We shall use that spell again," Edwin pressed.

"Yes," said Xzar, and fell silent.

"Oh for Cyric's sake, stop brooding! We've still Adrian to manage for our purposes!"

"After Gullykin," Xzar mumbled.

"Don't tell me you've lost your nerve," sneered Edwin. "Pathetic."

"Patience, o scarlet buffoon," Xzar shot back. "Or I'll give you rabbit's feet."

"Really, such squabbling between such powerful mages," Safana's husky voice cut in. She disentangled herself from the sleeping Adrian and slithered over.

"You should talk, after your performance today," Xzar said.

Safana shrugged. "I admit the power of spells. And both of you know I could be a useful ally in your scheme."

"And do you propose to sneak from his beds to each of ours during the course of the night?" Edwin demanded. "You think me foolish enough to trust you?"

"I'll take that as a no," Safana pouted. She looked at Xzar, who merely shook his head. Safana slunk back over to Adrian.

"Now, where were we--" began Edwin.

"After Gullykin," Xzar repeated.

Edwin spat a Thayvian curse, and decided to turn in.

As Safana was slipping back under the covers with Adrian, a pair of red eyes was on her, She shivered.

"What are you going to do, now that they've rebuffed you?" Viconia asked.

Safana gave a smirk. "The same thing I imagine you would do."

Viconia chuckled evilly.
