Adrian drew his sword. "Oh have you indeed? And why is that?"
"I am in search of an old pirate treasure, somewhere up the coast from here, guarded, unfortunately, by Sirens."
"Oh, wonderful," Edwin sneered. "Just what we need."
"What, don't you think you can take them?" Viconia asked him.
"That would depend how many there were, and what kind of help I had. (The quality of this party is sorely lacking)."
"Oh, I think together we'd be capable," said Safana in her husky voice. "That is, if you'll....have me."
Adrian raised his eyebrow at this, but did not respond at first.
"We be distracted from our main cause already," said Montaron.
"We can use the money," Kagain pointed out.
"And the experience in combat," Adrian added. "Very well, we accept."
Safana smiled seductively.
"But that doesn't mean I trust you," he added. "Montaron, watch her."
Before they reached the cave the next day, they had to fight through another horde of Hobgoblins, armed with poison arrows. They were already weary when they reached the Sirens.
The lilting voices and their strange songs reached the party, and Adrian almost turned against his allies. Montaron too, wavered. But they held, until Xzar finally succumbed, and tried to attack them. Viconia's dispelling magic cleared him.
But the Sirens themselves had cursed invisibility and their own supply of poison arrows. By the time they had finished them all, everyone but Kagain were badly wounded. They bedded down at the mouth of the cave.
Safana tried to put the moves on Adrian again that night, but even had he been so inclined, he was too tired and too badly hurt.
The next day they entered the cave, and encountered something Safana had not expected....Flesh Golems. One they could've handled, but three....
It was here that Montaron's luck ran out.
They had, with difficulty, taken out two of the Golems in the large cave. The third was standing right by a large pool of water, which Safana had assured them was the key to finding the treasure.
Montaron and Kagain were fighting the Golem directly, with Adrian as usual behind them, firing his crossbow. Safana had helped with her sling.
But the Golem knocked Montaron's sword from his hand, and it went flying into the cavern.
The next blow connected with Montaron's head, knocking him unconscious and sending him into the air....and he landed in the water.
His armor dragged him down.
He never had a chance.
He was dead, and there was no way to recover the body for resurrection
