Well, hope ya like it. I'm not entirely happy with it... The section in italics is Vexk's dream.

****

When Wolves Cry 4: Hold On

What are you looking for?
What are you waiting for?
Do you know
what you’re doing to me?
Go ahead.
What are you waiting for?

Hold on if you feel like letting go,
Hold on it gets better than you know.
Don’t stop walking,
You’re one step closer.
Don’t stop searching,
It’s not over
Hold On.

-Hold On, Good Charlotte

Vexk sat up with a groan. She felt drained, how ironic. But it wasn’t funny. She looked rather forlornly at her wrists, they were healed, but the keen vision given to her by her lycanthropic nature allowed her to see the faintest of pale lines across them. Something creaked, she looked over to see Jaheira sitting in a chair beside the bed. A myriad of emotions flitted through the druid’s eyes.

“Why?” so simple a question. She didn’t answer. Jaheira asked again. More silence.

“I…”

The druid looked rather angry, “Why in the Nine Hells did you do it, Vexk? It wouldn’t have solved anything!!!”

“I have the Hunter’s Madness, Jaheira,” Vexk managed, her voice cracking, “I just didn’t…I didn’t want to hurt anyone.”

Cold, calculated wolf logic. Do what was necessary for the pack, even if it excluded you from the picture. It hit Jaheira like a warhammer, that the lycanthropic half-elven woman who was her ward, this predatory being she had come to care for and respect, had pronounced her own death sentence.

“How long?” the druid asked hoarsely.

“I have nine ten-days at the most,” Vexk replied.

“Vexk,” Jaheira said, “Look at me.”

Those gray eyes met her green ones.

“Promise me,” Jaheira said, “Promise me that you won’t kill yourself, Vexk.”

“Why, Jaheira? So in a matter of weeks I can snap and slay my friends. So someday Shanka sees her sister foaming at the mouth like some wild monster, or perhaps a mad werewolf will be the last thing she sees. I won’t…I can’t…Jaheira. I will not risk hurting or killing someone. When I go, it could be you, Shanka, some little boy on the street…”

“Promise me,” Jaheira repeated, her green eyes piercing Vexk’s very soul. Something within her broke.

“I…I promise,” she rasped.

“We will find a cure,” the druid said, “I swear it.”

Vexk managed a nod. Her eyes grew colder, and she grasped the hilt of her silver dagger, which was currently adorning Jaheira’s belt.

“But you have to promise me, Jae,” Vexk said, inspecting the blade and making the druid more than a little nervous, “That if we do not find a cure, and I lose myself, that you will end it for me.”

Almost hesitantly, Jaheira took the silver dagger from the lycanthrope, “I promise.”

Vexk yawned and pulled the covers closer around her, exhaustion taking hold once again. Jaheira rose from her chair, heading for the door. Just as she was walking out, she heard it. A whisper. Thank you, Jae.

“You’re welcome,” she murmured, before closing the door and heading downstairs.

***

“Jaheira, over here!” Shanka yelled. The druid strode over, taking a seat beside the half-elven rogue, who introduced her to their new friends.

“Where’s Vexk?” Shanka asked.

“Sleeping,” Jaheira replied.

“Lazy-bones, I’ll go get her up,” the rogue leapt out of her chair.

“Don’t,” Jaheira said, “She had a rough night. Nightmares.”

“Oh, that stinks,” Shanka sat back down, “But, I’ve got good news. If we earn twenty-thousand gold, some thieves will help us get Immy back. Figured it wouldn’t be too hard, this city is crawling with people that need help with stuff.”

“A wise decision,” Jaheira mused. The druid got some food and went back upstairs. Slowly, Viconia rose and followed her.

“Where you going, Vico?” Shanka asked.

“I wish to talk to the mongrel,” Viconia replied.

“Which one, Vexk or Jaheira?” the half-elf continued. The drow simply chuckled and headed upstairs.

****

Jaheira was sitting at Vexk’s bedside as Viconia crept in. The drow’s eyes scoured the room, picking traces of blood, something that would have been bypassed by any without the keen vision of an elf.

“What happened?” the drow asked, eyes flickering over the raven-haired half-elf who was lying prone in the bed.

“How did you know something…” the druid began.

“The others might not see, half-breed,” Viconia said, “But I spent nearly my entire life in the Underdark. I know when most are lying, and I could see the pain the others could not. Now answer my question. Honestly, or I’ll wake her up and ask her.”

“She…” Jaheira took a breath, “She tried to kill herself. I walked in…and she was just lying there, blood pouring from her arms.”

“Did she tell you why?” the drow continued.

“She has the Hunter’s Madness, it’s a lycanthrope disease that…” the druid answered.

“You’re talking to a cleric, wael,” Viconia replied, smirking slightly, “Continue.”

****
“Vexk…”

The voice, that melodic sound that had awoken her from slumber so many times. Slowly she opened her eyes. The half-elf found herself back home, her true home. Yaera’s house in the trees. She was angry, so tired of the tears that seemed to find her more and more in her weakness. The lycanthrope squeezed her eyes shut and sank back into the pillows, wishing for all she was worth that she wasn’t in this place again.

“Don’t be like that, a’mael,” that voice ordered.

She opened her cold gray eyes, peering intently at the form that sat on the bed beside her. The wild-elf had darkly tanned skin, glossy brown hair, and hazel eyes that seemed to pierce clean through to her soul. Yaera always reminded her of a wildcat. So beautiful, strong, cunning, sleek.

“It isn’t real, is it?” Vexk managed.

“It’s a dream, dear,” Yaera replied, smiling slowly, “Corellon let me visit you this once, this is as real as it gets.”

The half-elf drew the wild-elf into her arms, just holding her. The tears that had made her so angry earlier now fell freely. “I…I just…I miss you so much. You were my whole life, Yaera, and then you were gone. Because of me…”

The druid touched Vexk’s cheek, “You were my world, Vexkanthi. Never ever regret what we had. I died, love, nothing can change what happened. But the days I spent with you were the happiest of my life and I would not trade those for anything, even if it meant that I would have lived.”

“But, a’mael,” Yaera continued, “That’s not the entirety of what we are here to talk about.”

Vexk raised one ebon eyebrow and waited for the druid to speak on.

“You need to move on,” the druid said with some determination, “You have become so…so very cold, have you forgotten all that you have to live for?”

“Yaera…” the lycanthrope started.

“No, Vexk.” The elf replied, “You dwell to much on the past, the things that you cannot change. You have done so much, for so many people, and you would just throw it all away for naught. That is not the woman I knew.”

The lycanthrope remained silent, head bowed in shame.

“Two paths are before you, love,” Yaera said, “I have been forbidden to tell you much of it, but I can tell you some. One road holds death, the other, a lifetime of happiness. Don’t be afraid to love again. Remember what we had, by all means, but move on. For in the end, only love will be able to save you. Sorry to be so terribly cryptic about it, dear, but I have to follow the ‘rules’.”

Vexk made as if to say something, but the wild-elf held a finger to the other’s lips.

“Now be a good girl and do what I said,” Yaera said, grinning wickedly.

The raven-haired half-elf smiled sadly, “This is it, isn’t it? Our last goodbye.”

“It is, a’mael,” the wild-elf replied, “One more thing before I send you off properly, though. When you wake up, you’ll need to help someone. You’ll understand when you’re there, I suppose.”

Then, Yaera’s soft lips pressed against hers, and the world melted around her.

***

She heard the whispers first, as she began to wake. Slight sounds on the very edge of her senses.

“Do you hear it?” she asked no one in particular, not even opening her eyes.

“Shhh…” an accented voice told her, “Go back to sleep, child.”

The whispers grew louder as she concentrated. Then she realized it was not actual sound she sensed, but rather feeling.

Pain…Hate…Anger…

Who are you? she asked.

Pride…Ferocity…Power…

She could feel it, it did not howl, but rather began to make a sound like barking laughter.

She tried again….Where?

Close…Dark…Deep…

Another echo…people cheering and laughing, an animal’s death keen.

“Jaheira…” she reached out, catching both the druid’s hand and attention, “Is there a basement in the Copper Coronet?”

The druid gave her an odd look, “Yes, Vexk…are you alright?”

“You should have checked her head,” Viconia chuckled.

The raven-haired half-elf sat up, “Vic?”

“Good to see you as well, Khal’abbil,” the drow replied. “I am less than impressed with your recent actions, however, I do understand them.”

The lycanthrope nodded, then turned to Jaheira “There’s something trapped here, I can hear it.”

With that, Vexk got out of bed and shrugged on the leather armor they had found in the dungeon. Securing her longswords at her waist, she turned to her friends.

“Where are you going?” Jaheira asked, looking a little exasperated.

“To find and help it, I have…orders,” the lycanthrope replied, accompanying her words with a rather wicked little grin. With a sigh, the druid rose, belting on her scimitar. Viconia sighed and headed to her room.

Vexk bargained with Lethinan to get permission to the backrooms. As they continued, the feelings intensified, the sounds becoming louder and louder.

Her gray eyes grew colder and colder as they continued, past pits, down the stairs, and into the darkest corridors. The being was pleased with her. Hope overwhelmed her senses. Then something darker.

Vengeance…

Poor druid, so many things to worry and cry for... :)

Aww... this so sad... but perhaps not all hope is lost yet?

“Why, Jaheira? So in a matter of weeks I can snap and slay my friends. Aww... can't say no to that druid... :(

Theo:  It sure was hard for me to scrape together those 20,000... true, we had a lot of distractions along the way...

“I wish to talk to the mongrel,” Viconia replied.

“Which one, Vexk or Jaheira?” the half-elf continued. The drow simply chuckled and headed upstairs.

Theo: Hehe... Vic is funny... and mongrels are cute :(

Oh, Vicky is one wise drow...

Yep, I thought this was a great chapter - especially the dream was very emotional. Yaera is such a lovely character... I'm really sad that we won't see more of her.

Now, I've got to read those early epsiodes of Karnat and find out exactly why I should stay away from the toast.

Laska : LEft you drained? Well, I know, ahum, better ways to drain your energy.

Rose : Ahum! *glares* :)

Laska : Errm, hiking... I meant hiking...

Rose : You'd better... *still glares.*

Cold, calculated wolf logic. Do what was necessary for the pack, even if it excluded you from the picture. It hit Jaheira like a warhammer, that the lycanthropic half-elven woman who was her ward, this predatory being she had come to care for and respect, had pronounced her own death sentence.

*sniff* And she would too, even should it break her own heart. ;)

*nods* Jae's like that...

“The others might not see, half-breed,” Viconia said, “But I spent nearly my entire life in the Underdark. I know when most are lying, and I could see the pain the others could not. Now answer my question. Honestly, or I’ll wake her up and ask her.”

Yes, it makes sense that Vic would notice something.

She's clever

The half-elf drew the wild-elf into her arms, just holding her. The tears that had made her so angry earlier now fell freely. “I…I just…I miss you so much. You were my whole life, Yaera, and then you were gone. Because of me…”

The druid touched Vexk’s cheek, “You were my world, Vexkanthi. Never ever regret what we had. I died, love, nothing can change what happened. But the days I spent with you were the happiest of my life and I would not trade those for anything, even if it meant that I would have lived.”

Awww...I really liked the dream sequence. Sweet but sad.

Thanks :)

Vengeance…

Ahhh...time to kill the slavers. Was it the Winter Wolf she sensed?

No...it's a surprise :)

Those scars will always be there I suppose.

*nods* Consequences of her actions...

Ooh, this doesn't sound good.

It's not

“Oh, that stinks,” Shanka sat back down, “But, I’ve got good news. If we earn twenty-thousand gold, some thieves will help us get Immy back. Figured it wouldn’t be too hard, this city is crawling with people that need help with stuff.”

Oh, you better believe it.

Shanka's optimistic ;)

She opened her cold gray eyes, peering intently at the form that sat on the bed beside her. The wild-elf had darkly tanned skin, glossy brown hair, and hazel eyes that seemed to pierce clean through to her soul. Yaera always reminded her of a wildcat. So beautiful, strong, cunning, sleek.

Aww, she misses her so much.

*nods* Poor Vexk...

Ah yes, those darn cryptic prophetic rules are made just to annoy adventurers I bet. :)

Ya better believe it...the storm approaches...we speak no more...

:)

Close…Dark…Deep…

Another echo…people cheering and laughing, an animal’s death keen.

Ah, it's the fighting pits. She going to get an animal companion?

Nope, just catch up with an old friend.

Now, she is gonna get it. :)

:)

“Promise me,” Jaheira repeated, her green eyes piercing Vexk’s very soul. Something within her broke.

“I…I promise,” she rasped.

There is a "thing" about jaheiras eyes.

Most definitely

“You’re talking to a cleric, wael,” Viconia replied, smirking slightly, “Continue.”

I think that viconia is actually going to do something friendly in a moment.

*gasp* She is... :)

Why can't the gods just say what they want to say in a clear language. ;)

It would be too easy... Mwahahaha

“Shhh…” an accented voice told her, “Go back to sleep, child.”

Yes momma'. :)

LMAO!

Laska : LEft you drained? Well, I know, ahum, better ways to drain your energy.

Rose : Ahum! *glares* :)

Laska : Errm, hiking... I meant hiking...

Rose : You'd better... *still glares.*

Vexk: *wicked grin* Well... I might go *clears throat*...hiking if Rose wasn't standing right there.

What's that? Is she dying? ;)

*nods*

Vexk managed a nod. Her eyes grew colder, and she grasped the hilt of her silver dagger, which was currently adorning Jaheira’s belt.

Laska : Well, if it doesn't work, and you want to live on the wild side one more night, I...

Rose : Ahum!

Laska : Oh, come on! It's a dying half-elf's wish! :)

Vexk: *wolf-grins* If I had a genie then I'd get three wishes...They'd all be the same...

Shanka: Excuse her, she has a tattooed elf fetish. *drags Vexk off*

Vexk: *growls* Damned siblings...

“Don’t,” Jaheira said, “She had a rough night. Nightmares.”

I'll say. :)

*nods*

The half-elf drew the wild-elf into her arms, just holding her. The tears that had made her so angry earlier now fell freely. “I…I just…I miss you so much. You were my whole life, Yaera, and then you were gone. Because of me…”

LAska : *sniff* Got... something in my eye...

*sad smile* :)

“It is, a’mael,” the wild-elf replied, “One more thing before I send you off properly, though. When you wake up, you’ll need to help someone. You’ll understand when you’re there, I suppose.”

Then, Yaera’s soft lips pressed against hers, and the world melted around her.

Awww...
