Hi! I was just playing through one final time, and I got to the point where your PC returns to Athkatla (from the Underdark) and tries to leave town...you know, the funky encounter where a bunch of travelers morph into duplicates of your party.

What's the deal with this? I have yet to find an explanation as to who those dudes are, or *precisely* why they're trying to kill your party. Of course, I wouldn't know; a powergamer I am not. :?

If anyone knows -- or even suspects -- I would really, really appreciate an answer. :D

Thank you!

I'd like to hear the answer to this too. Does anyone else know? Does anyone else even come here at all?

I got this encounter in Chapter 3. I'm not sure what it is either, but I think it is a quasi-random encounter, because on another play-through, I didn't have that happen at all.

As for what and why, your guess is as good as mine.

Bah! I actually recently wondered about the same thing. I seem to recall reading somewhere that Firkraag sends those dudes, but they usually appear in my game after I have killed Firky. Hmm. Come to think of it - they always seem to appear *exactly* after I kill him. Could be a coincidence of course.

Maybe it is just a completely random encounter. Not everything has to happen for a reason. Anyway that is just my opinion.

Well, thank y'all for your help. :) You did try to help me find an answer, but I reckon this'll be one of those unsolved mysteries for now...

Dont know if this helps but.........

I always figured those people to be a doppleganger (sp?) brigand and they've heard of all the quest your party has done so they plan to kill you and use your name, image, reputation, etc... to do all sorts of illegal stuff.

Not too sure tho, as i'm new to the whole D&D world.

Maybe its a attempt by the rakshasa? i only got it after i installed tatics, ease, but i had only played through once before...
Did it happen if you had the Flail of the Ages? it did for me.

They arent well informed: If you tell them that your not Charname of Candlekeep, they go away.

I always figured it was revenge for the protagonist killing so many doppelgangers in the first game.

Hmm, those should only appear in Chap 6. They are meant to be rakshasa as far as I can tell (note lack of doppleganger warcries). As fro Reason, take your pick. Some say Irenicus (though the way he acts so surprised to see you later doesn't lend credence to that). My personal view is that they were hired assassins of some kind, probably from one of the quests. Take your pick; Cowlies, Bodhi, Irenicus, Rakshasa who want the flail and so forth. Hmm, does this help in anyway whatsoever. I dont think so. Ah well. ;)

yay, my firstt post, having had membershiop for about 6 months. ;)

I've been wondering about this too. Bad thing is, when it happens to me in the game it glitches the game out and causes issues. After I kill them, I get a mage who teleports into every scene I do. He doesnt talk, say anything, or do much more than follow my characters around - causing all other npc conversations to fail as well.

Can you use the cheat keys to get rid of him? You might be able to Ctrl+Y him. Or perhaps Ctrl+Q followed by Ctrl+K? (Ctrl+Y kills, +Q recruits into the party, +K dumps from the party) If these cheat keys don't work then I recommend you visit the Bioware boards, more particularly Baldur's Gate II: SoA and ToB Technical Support . Ya hya chouhada!

At least one of them drops a set of scrolls of Mislead, True Sight, and Death Spell. You find these same scrolls on many of the Rakshasa in Suldanesselar.

Any number of people could have sicc'ed a set of Raskhasa on the PC... Any of the Five (not Illasera's style though), a certain Deathstalker, some random group of mages who decided the PC was too powerful and a threat, etc. etc.

I figured they were Rakshasa. . . I've only gotten this encounter once.

You're right about what they drop though. I didn't even notice that. *shrug*

And I've never gotten the mystery mage. Sounds like mucked-up coding to me. . . *shrug*
