The Duel

"Excuse me . . ." Called a tentative voice. Revan turned to see a young woman; dressed in Padawan's robes, standing in the doorframe. Blonde hair pulled back in two braids fraimed a delecate face. "I -- that is, Master Kreia sent me, Master Revan. She said you had been seeking a sparring partner." The young woman looked a little fearful. Then again, she had to deal with Kreia, Revan thought scornfully. Kreia always seemed to have strange tests in mind . . . she was a decidedly odd woman. Revan chuckled.

"First off . . there's no reason to look so frightened. I don't eat Padawans, despite what Kreia told you." A smile played at the corners of her lips. "Second off, enough with this 'Master Revan.' My name is Revan, don't be afraid to use it."

"Oh." The woman said in a small voice. Boy, Kreia must have freaked her bad . . . what did she say this time?

"Alright, -- Revan." There was a tentative smile now.

"Do you have a name?" Revan pulled a tie from around her wrist and pulled her hair back at the nape of her neck.

"Aldara."

Revan smiled. "Alright Aldara," she said with a nod, "let's see why Kreia sent you, shall we?"

Aldara nodded back and pulled a single-bladed lightsaber. Revan paused. "Kreia did tell you I fight with two blades, right?"

"Yes, she did . . . Is that a problem?" Aldara's violet blade ignited, throwing purple highlights onto her features.

Revan blinked. That's wasn't the answer I expected. . . . "Nope." She pulled both her lightsabers.

They nodded and bowed to each other.

A flicker in the Force was her only warning; she found herself flat on her back. Aldara was almost above her, Revan flipped backward, startled, and felt a grin spread across her features. She had always enjoyed such things. Raising one blade high, the other in a guard position, she came forward as their blades met.

The battle was short. As Revan picked herself up off the floor for the third time, she laughed.

"Mas -- Revan?" Aldara asked. "What's so funny?"

"Where in --" Revan began, not answering her question as she shut off her sabers, "-- how did you learn to fight like that? At least I know why Kreia picked you."

"Are you alright?" Aldara asked, as she shut down her own blade.

"I'm fine." Revan shook her head. "But you didn't answer my question."

Aldara looked away. "I -- I just knew a lot of what you were going to do. Through the Force, -- I mean. It wasn't hard after that."

"It's frighteningly effective. "

"Well . . . um, yes, I suppose."

"You always managed to catch me off balance when you'd push me down with the Force. Almost perfect timing. How do you do that?"

Aldara shrugged. "Sorry, Master Revan." Revan sighed. I still have to get used to that, it seems.

"I don't know." She ran her hand through her braids, which were now half-undone. Strands of blonde hair fell in front of her face.

"Well, it worked. Add to that that you're quite fast, and . . ." Revan blew out a breath. "You'd probably give many of the masters a run for their money.

Aldara blushed. "Don't say that. I'm not that good."

"Want to bet on that?" Revan asked with another laugh. Aldara just shook her head, turning even redder.

"C'mon." Revan said with a wide grin. "I've got a few hours. Let's go raid the mess hall, and you can tell me more about yourself. I want to know about the person who bested me."
