Well, here is some more BL...

Please enjoy.

Beloved Child 58

After Viconia had received the scroll, Ardulace turned unexpectedly to Groder. The Drow bent forward in front of the youth and gave him a good view of her bosom. Groder concentrated on her face deciding that openly staring might be a bad idea. Ardulace gave him a shark like smile.

“So this is the little warrior, curious…” She purred much like Phaere did and it was clear where the young Drow had picked up that habit. “If you come back I think I shall cheer you on in the fight with the Vol`Soress fool.”

Groder flushed red and Ardulace gave a throaty laugh. She retreated from a party and waved them away leaving them alone with the still fuming Phaere.

“Well, you heard the Matron Mother!” Phaere snapped and stalked out of the temple.

“This little display is an opportunity for us.” Viconia said once they were left alone. “There is always a smaller war between the eldest daughter and the matron. With some luck and guile we may be able to turn this into an advantage.”

“Indeed.” Jaheira nodded thoughtfully.

When they too had left the temple and were back in their common room Imoen piped up.

“So I figure we go for the easy targets and head for the Kua-Toa.” The pink haired rogue and mage said.

“They are not that easy.” Viconia said. “They are a vicious race but I will admit that they are the least dangerous option.”

“I suppose we have no other choice…” Jaheira sighed. “At least we won’t have to worry about Groder and Istrovir.”

“Hey! We don’t need to worry about that anyways.” Groder protested and then stroked his chin. “I should probably say goodbye to Nym or maybe I won’t.”

“And I should try to get some time in with Sola.” Imoen exclaimed and stood up.

“Alas I doubt Phaere wants any company right now…” Haer`Dalis lamented theatrically after Imoen`s outburst.

“Erhm…” Nalia cleared her throat and brushed back a red bang. “What is a Kua-Toa exactly?”

“They are large man-like fish creatures. Kind of like Shaugain but simpler and frankly uglier.” Viconia informed them with a slightly disgusted look on her face.

“Oh, I have read about the Shaugain. Some bestiaries are woefully incomplete though so could they be related somehow?” Nalia asked.

“They might be; it is rather irrelevant though.” Viconia replied. “What you need to know is that they are hard to kill, attacks mostly in packs and can use limited magic. Preparation as always is the key, I have never seen a…” The Drow made gestures in the air. “Noble Kua-Toa before so I don’t know what to expect.”

“Well, they will not come to us so I suggest we start planning and then we leave.” Jaheira said.

**

“Hey!”

Solaufein looked up from his seat and saw Imoen, the pink haired foreign female. Finding himself with surprisingly little to do, more punishment most likely, he had decided to simply take it easy and spend some time at the tavern.

“Yes?” He asked.

“We are going to leave for a few days so I thought I should try to get a few words in.” She tossed him a half smile.

The Drow warrior motioned for her to sit and quickly pondered if Ruzun`s suggestion had any merit, despite being an annoying flirt the man did make sense a lot of the time. There was no denying that she was rather fetching and could be amusing when she wanted too.

“Could you tell me why you became a mage instead of a bard; you seem to have the flair for it.” Solaufein asked after she had sat down.

She seemed generally surprised at the question and let out a small laugh. It sounded happier then most he had heard in his life.

“I can’t hold a tune to save my life.” Imoen responded, playing with a pink bang. “Sorcery suited me better.”

“Your House took care of that?” Solaufein asked. He knew he was gambling but he could also not shake the feeling that something was off with them all.

“Well, I had talent and the Matron decided that it was to be used. I am not complaining.” She winked.

He managed a wry smile. The warrior wondered briefly if the fact that she seemed so upbeat was the fact that she was rather young. Not that he was much older sometimes he just felt like he was.

“So did you just wish for the pleasure of my company or…?” Solaufein leaned back in his seat.

“Ah, have I made you think that I like your company?” Imoen smiled a little again. Solaufein raised an eyebrow.

“The hunt is more exciting…” She winked again and he smiled once more, she should have been a bard.

For the first time in almost a week the party was back in the dark cavern system that made up the better part of the Underdark. Slowly their eyes adjusted to the gloom, their feet to the uneven ground. The map Ardulace had given them was much more functional then the Druegars.

Soon they found a path they had missed entirely on their first trek through and the cavern roof lowered considerably. Natural pools of water began appearing as the cavern widened again.

“Now we need to be careful.” Viconia whispered to them all and then looked at Nalia, red eyes burning in the gloom. “Nalia if you would?”

The redheaded noble nodded and slowly began casting a spell. After a while a blue sort of powder seemed to float down on the party from thin air and they began disappearing from sight. The mass invisibility was volatile but they could all see the general outlines of each other so as to not bump into one another.

The party passed through more cavern corridors and soon they turned from natural to being more defined by tools. Then the rooms became even smoother and wetter, water pooled the floors and ran down walls.

The party encountered their first Kua-Toans in these halls. The Kua-Toans were large and man like with mottled and grey skin and wide batrachian lips, glaring with pairs of bulbous eyes that stuck out from the sides of their heads. Large fins rose like plums over their heads. The Kua-Toans brandished wicked looking javelins and clumsily made crossbows in their webbed hands.

The party struck swiftly. Blades sunk into flesh and the fish men died. Jaheira crushed a smaller ones skull. Imoen with her new crossbow and Nalia whom still had her bow picked off the ones that tried to escape.

They moved on through well carved halls. The floor became smooth and on the sides of the makeshift path they were on, water played in the small channels that ran along with the path. What looked like large tadpoles swam in them.

“So where to?” Imoen whispered as the path split in two. A larger pool opened up before them, the path separating it from the small channels with the tadpoles.

Viconia took out the map and looked at it and then she shrugged.

“It is not so detailed.” She reported and looked in both directions.

“More have passed through there then over there.” Jaheira said and pointed first at the left passage and the right.

“How do you know that?” Groder asked and Jaheira gave him a tired look. “Right, druid…” He said.
As they were about to begin down the left passage a small foul looking Kua-Toa emerged from it. When the fish man saw the party he gave a weird croak and bolted back into the passage.

“Damn it!” Jaheira swore and Viconia had managed to get out her sling and flung a stone at the fleeing beast but it missed and bounced of the stone walls.

“Lets just get ready; they will be coming through that way.” Viconia said and held her small shield in front of her.

“What about the rear?” Nalia asked with some worry in her voice.

“You and Haer`Dalis keep an eye on it.” Jaheira barked and readied her staff.

The tiefling bard slid his two blades out of their sheets and took up position next to Nalia whom held an arrow ready. Imoen raised her small crossbow and aimed into the darkness. Groder stood by Viconia and Jaheira.

Soon enough they could here more of the croaking voices coming in their direction. The first javelin brandishing Kua-Toa to emerge from the passage was shot through the eye by Imoen. There was a certain odd roar and more of the fish men stormed forth. The Kua-Toa were fast for such large creatures, they wielded their javelins and large curved knives well. Most of the charging beasts were large and seemed to fail to notice Groder until he hacked through a leg with Azure Edge. Jaheira swung her staff high and hit one of the Kua-Toa so hard that it spun out into the pool and slowly sunk into the murky water.

Viconia left two of the fish men clawing at themselves after the acid, ice and fire of the flail of ages had scourged their faces. She used the breather she got to chant a short spell and a pleasant blue light surrounded all of the party, making them all feel a bit more powerful. From the back Nalia threw several red balls that slammed into a Kua-Toa that had begun chanting, the fish man gave a yelp and them fell down to the ground, panting. The battle rippled back and forth, necessitating that Haer`Dalis to dance into the shallow channel by the paths side and stopping a smaller Kua-Toa from flanking the party.

A large Kua-Toa heaved itself out of the pool and dripping with water grabbed Jaheira and pulled her into the depths.

“Damn!” Viconia yelled and struck another fish man dead. “Can someone help her?”

Suddenly a part of the water became darker as blood mingled with it. A wet and angry looking half-elf pulled herself and her weapon out of the water soon after. After a quick nod to them all, Jaheira engaged the remaining Kua-Toa. Together they drove the fish men back and the group of Kua-Toa began retreating.

They were stopped at the passageway however and seemed to pile up before they realised that they couldn’t get in. A bunch of them were pushed back, impaled on a large jagged spear. Through the dark passage lumbered a large Kua-Toa. It eyes seemed to roll independent of each other, its wide frog like lips pulled back in a snarl. Dark leather armour covered the beast’s most vital parts. It shook the impaled fish men off its spear and gurgled a short laugh.

“You think that counts as a noble?” Imoen asked quietly.

“Let us hope so.” Jaheira whispered back. “I have no wish to fight these fish for longer then I have to.”

“Agreed.” Viconia filled in and silently began praying as did Jaheira.

Both Nalia and Imoen quickly threw spells and their skin turned grey and hard as stone. Haer`Dalis blurred and then touched Groder`s shoulder and silently whispered another spell.

“For luck, My Raven.” The tiefling said.

The youth felt instantly luckier, like he could do anything and it would be perfectly fine. The party grouped together, readying themselves for the great Kua-Toa. The beast roared and banged the end of its spear on the ground. Then it charged, flanked by its remaining kin.

“This little display is an opportunity for us.” Viconia said once they were left alone. “There is always a smaller war between the eldest daughter and the matron. With some luck and guile we may be able to turn this into an advantage.”

Oh. So they are going to side with Ardulace against Phaere? Interesting.

“Erhm…” Nalia cleared her throat and brushed back a red bang. “What is a Kua-Toa exactly?”

Mmm. So Nalia's hair hasn't turned white? Interesting again...

Heh. I'm sort of left wondering what kinds of gestures she made...

“Well, they will not come to us so I suggest we start planning and then we leave.” Jaheira said.

Yes! The exposition is over. Now we can get to the fighting!

Solaufein looked up from his seat and saw Imoen, the pink haired foreign female. Finding himself with surprisingly little to do, more punishment most likely, he had decided to simply take it easy and spend some time at the tavern.

Free time = punishment? Workaholic. :)

She seemed generally surprised at the question and let out a small laugh. It sounded happier then most he had heard in his life.

Aww... I'm so liking this whole scene! :D

(I'm so liking the whole subquest, really...)

Nice description.

The mass invisibility was volatile but they could all see the general outlines of each other so as to not bump into one another.

But this one is so much better! (And I'm liking the way you put the 'mass invisibility' there. Telling us what the spell is, but in such a way that it isn't: 'this was a spell of mass invisibility'. And you've done it even better later, with the luck spell.)

As they were about to begin down the left passage a small foul looking Kua-Toa emerged from it. When the fish man saw the party he gave a weird croak and bolted back into the passage.

:)

A large Kua-Toa heaved itself out of the pool and dripping with water grabbed Jaheira and pulled her into the depths.

:) (I should, perhaps, be all worried about Jaheira here, but... :D )

After a quick nod to them all, Jaheira engaged the remaining Kua-Toa. Together they drove the fish men back and the group of Kua-Toa began retreating.

:D The fight scene is very dynamic, though: spells - I loved how Viconia cast hers in a breather - and all. :D

“You think that counts as a noble?” Imoen asked quietly.

Killing one's own... er, fish? Yep, that definitely counts as noble behaviour.

“Let us hope so.” Jaheira whispered back. “I have no wish to fight these fish for longer then I have to.”

“Agreed.” Viconia filled in and silently began praying as did Jaheira.

She'll never get the smell off her armour, I guess...

The youth felt instantly luckier, like he could do anything and it would be perfectly fine. The party grouped together, readying themselves for the great Kua-Toa. The beast roared and banged the end of its spear on the ground. Then it charged, flanked by its remaining kin.

Cliffhanger! :D

That's probably a very common Drow negotiation tactic. 'Hello puny male, let me intimidate you with the bags of fatty tissue that hang from my upper torso.'

“So I figure we go for the easy targets and head for the Kua-Toa.” The pink haired rogue and mage said.

“They are not that easy.” Viconia said. “They are a vicious race but I will admit that they are the least dangerous option.”

I tend to take out all three, because I like being thorough. (This does not explain why I have done the ring of Gaxx quest exactly once :) )

“Ah, have I made you think that I like your company?” Imoen smiled a little again. Solaufein raised an eyebrow.

She sounds very Drowish when she's predatory like this :)

Yeah, staring at your employer’s boobs and drooling isn’t exactly a bright idea.

“I suppose we have no other choice…” Jaheira sighed. “At least we won’t have to worry about Groder and Istrovir.”

Only for a brief while, though. Meanwhile, Groder can piss off some kua-toas.

We shall see... Kind of sad that the option never occured in the game.

“Erhm…” Nalia cleared her throat and brushed back a red bang. “What is a Kua-Toa exactly?”

Oops! That is a goof from my side...

I wonder how you actually should try and display something like that.

I think this shows just how... well, attached they're all getting to the drow way of life, above and beyond anything Ardulace may make them do.

He managed a wry smile. The warrior wondered briefly if the fact that she seemed so upbeat was the fact that she was rather young. Not that he was much older sometimes he just felt like he was.

I like this sort of wry consideration. It shows Solaufein's more capable, analytical side very well. I like him more and more.

The party struck swiftly. Blades sunk into flesh and the fish men died.

This is awesome in it's simplicity. And, of course, it;s pretty accurate when you consider just how effective Groder's team is, I guess. Poor fish-guys. Never stood a chance, did they?

Most of the charging beasts were large and seemed to fail to notice Groder until he hacked through a leg with Azure Edge. Jaheira swung her staff high and hit one of the Kua-Toa so hard that it spun out into the pool and slowly sunk into the murky water.

And again. I'm a sucker for a well-planned battle scene, especially when it involves little details like people falling in pools. Just seems to give the whole thing credibility.

 That is very, very cool. I'm guessing Groder'll need it!

I think this shows just how... well, attached they're all getting to the drow way of life, above and beyond anything Ardulace may make them do.

Well, lets hope they don`t get too attached

He managed a wry smile. The warrior wondered briefly if the fact that she seemed so upbeat was the fact that she was rather young. Not that he was much older sometimes he just felt like he was.

Thank you. He may stick around for while...
