More Beloved Child! Soon comes the Underdark! Enjoy!

Beloved Child 49

Pulled into battle again on so short notice, the party threw itself at Irenicus dark clad killers. Groder managed to dodge past them and ran up the stairs at Yoshimo. The Kara-Turan deftly dodged Groder and drew the youth after him so they both disappeared behind the lone solid wall that made up the south side wall of the courtyard.

Against the grace of Yoshimos blade, Azure Edge despite its enchantments proved clumsy and ineffective. The Kara-Turan gracefully avoided each of Groder`s blows and delivered his own slashes with deadly precision. Yoshimo aimed to disarm Groder and soon a close upwards swipe made the boy lose his balance. The blonde fell backwards and the axe slid from his grasp. Yoshimo was on him in a flash. Groder crawled backwards facing Yoshimo.

“Wait… wait…” The boy pleaded.

“Coward!” Yoshimo shouted. “Did Tamoko plead, did she beg for her life before you butchered her?”

Groder suddenly got an incredulous look on his face.

Tamoko?” He said surprised. “You sold yourself to Irenicus for that stupid bitch that couldn’t even…”

Yoshimos blade against his throat shut him up.

“Do not even speak.” Yoshimos voice was hard. “This is for her.”

The boy began laughing. Yoshimo narrowed his eyes.

“You truly are a mad dog…”

The boy kept laughing and grabbed a hold of the blade with his right hand. Only it was not his right hand precisely. It was covered in red and black scales. Small spikes and blades had begun growing out of it. Groder pushed the sword away from his throat. Still holding it, he stood. His entire body was changing, expanding.

“Seems like your master forgot to mention some….” The sentence was cut of as Groder`s vocal cords warped and his mouth changed into a long circular monstrosity with a churning mass of teeth. He threw away Yoshimos katana and it landed with a clatter on the floor. The slayer rose over Yoshimo in all its hideous glory. No light reflected of the scaly skin and the blades and spikes that covered its body.

It felt like being hit by a hammer. The Kara-Turan was thrown through the air. The slayer was fast for its size and swung its four fists like pistons. When he tried to get up Groder knocked him down again.

“Falling down already?” Groder`s voice was distorted through the circular mouth and long throat. “Pathetic!” He laughed. “Pathetic!”

“How did you ever hope to avenge Tamoko? How do you hope to protect Nalia now?”

The twisted laughter rang in his ears as the four bladed and spiked fists rained down on him. Yoshimo could feel it; it would not be long now.

“You will die cursed; knowing nothing you did could protect her.” Groder taunted. He brought his hideous face close to Yoshimos.

“She is all alone with me now…” The transformed youth brought down two fists on the man’s head, silencing the Kara-Turan forever.

Groder stood and howled in triumph. Transforming back into his normal self, the youth leaned against the blue tinted wall and drew in some heavy breaths. The raw, naked power coursing through him felt like being drunk without the fuzziness. He collected his axe and made his way back to one of the corridors which allowed overlooking of the lower level courtyard.

The fight was still going on there. Imoen and Nalia zipped hasted around the yard, stopping to fire arrows in Nalia`s case and some low level spells in Imoen`s. Viconia and Jaheira fought well in tandem and felled killer after killer. Haer`Dalis danced around with two of the killers, blocking and riposting.

With the meagre aid from the remaining inmates the fight was soon over and Groder descended the stairs to rejoin the party. Nalia rushed past him and was about to make her way up the stairs when Groder called after her.

“I would not go up there if I where you!”

The young noble did not heed his words and soon disappeared behind the corner.

“I’ll make sure she is alright!” Imoen said and bounded up the stairs after Nalia.

**

The two girls returned after a while. Nalia was gripping Yoshimos katana tightly in one hand, the other was squeezing Imoen`s hand. Tears flowed freely down the redheads cheeks. Her eyes reflected the sadness but also a certain determination.

The two descended the stairs and joined up with the rest of the group where Jaheira and Viconia were tending to injuries. Killjoy had reappeared as well.

“Excellent!” He said. “Now that this institution is in my hands we can actually get some real work done here.” Then the ghost pointed at the inmates. Dili had left her hiding palce and stood close to Aphril again. “If you would all go to the library. I have some announcements to make and I think we should leave these people alone.”

The inmates seemed better spirits then before as the ghost herded them from the courtyard and they disappeared upstairs.

Jaheira walked over to Nalia and Imoen while Haer`Dalis did a dramatic retelling of the battle for Groder.
“How are you feeling child?” The druid asked.

Nalia wiped her tears with the back of her free hand.

“I… I don’t know.” She replied. “It was horrible, I almost didn’t recognize him.”

Imoen shook her head sadly.

“Come, we should return to the common room above.” Jaheira said and laid a hand on Nalia`s shoulder. “You just rest and Viconia and I will see about finding some useful information.”

**

They camped in the asylums common room. Nalia and Imoen sat by the fireplace, the young redhead cast occasional glances at Groder. The boy was half asleep, leaning against Haer`Dalis.

“It is not fair.” Nalia muttered and wiped her eyes.

“What?” Imoen asked. The pink haired mage was slowly eating a broth Jaheira had prepared and looked much healthier then she had before.

“Yoshimo is dead and Groder looks so peaceful… so happy.” The girl hid her face in her knees. “I know he betrayed us but…” She trailed off. A sob wracked her body.

Imoen was silent for a while then she spoke softly.

“He is sick… his mind I mean.”

“I don’t think a geas works that way…” Nalia began surprised.

“No, no… Groder.” Imoen replied quickly.

“I don’t really see how you can defend him, after what he to you did in the maze and well…” Nalia trailed off.

Imoen looked at the floor.

“I know but I remember how he was before. It may be silly of me to cling to that but I really don’t want to lose those days. I really don’t. They are all I have left.”

“Before?” The redheaded mage echoed.

“Before he got sick, I don’t know maybe he was always sick and I didn’t notice or maybe something sparked it. I just know he is sick.”

Nalia looked over at Groder and Haer`Dalis.

“Maybe you are right.” The young noble whispered.

On the sofa Groder and Haer`Dalis had begun a conversation on their own.

“This is just perfect…” Groder muttered. “Now I don’t have a soul or whatever as well. At least I got to kill Yoshimo.”

“Such is the nature of quests. Well, look at the upside.” Haer`Dalis said and slapped Groder`s leg. “It is just you and me with four beautiful women now.”

“Granted but three of them dislike me and life is not an erotic novel.” The youth said lazily and yawned.

“Actually several parts of my life are.” The bard smiled showing of his rows of white sharks teeth. “See there were this sweet little bard and her rather busty friend...”

“For some reason I am not surprised.” Groder responded and sank deeper into the sofa. “Is it any good?”

“How would you define good My Raven?” The tiefling asked and sank deeper as well, mimicking Groder.

“Well…” The youth thought a while. “Anyone that does not sound like a fourteen year old stuck in their favourite wet dream.”

“So anything that is enticing yet actually seems realistic then?” The bard scratched his chin. “Ours that is the bard and mine is a bit more surreal to its nature. In our defence we were under the influence of both drugs and alcohol.” He looked thoughtful for a moment. “I still wonder if the Naga and the female lich were figments of my imagination.”

“I think we can stop there.” Groder smiled and held up his hands.

**

After preparing the food for the others, Jaheira and Viconia began looking through the office that had belonged to Irenicus and Wanev the coordinator respectively. The fineries in room looked wasted in the place they inhabited. Jaheira was looking through the bookshelf while Viconia rummaged through the desk.

“There was some pepper in that kitchen; it would not have hurt you to use some.” Viconia commented suddenly as she closed the first drawer.

“You can cook?” Jaheira asked while running a finger over a row of books.

“Yes!” Viconia answered indignant.” I have lived alone for a long time and I owned a house for a while. Did you think I kidnapped the nearby housewives to cook for me?”

“No, I suppose not.” Jaheira laughed softly. “Although I honestly have a hard time imagining you doing any cooking at all.”

“Then brace yourself for I also did carpentry, now bend over a bit and give Viconia something to look at besides the wall.” The Drow said.

Jaheira turned back with an annoyed eyebrow arched. The cleric smiled a bit at the druid and then began checking through the desk again.

“You are different then from what I thought. We did not exactly see eye to eye before.” Jaheira commented offhand.

“Likewise.” Viconia answered while digging in the second drawer and then said more silently. “Maybe it is because I know loss as well.”

“Did you say something?” The half-elf asked as she pulled out a book and looked at it critically.

“No nothing.” Viconia responded and then pulled a thick book out of the desks third drawer.

The Drow dropped it on the desk and began flipping through the pages.

“Jaheira!” Viconia called and the druid turned towards her. “I believe I have found Irenicus journal!”

The half-elf walked over to the desk and began reading over Viconia`s shoulder. The Drow flipped pages at Jaheira`s behest and they had soon covered some parts of it.

“So he and Bodhi were cursed and now they have used at least parts of the Bhaalspawns essence to restore themselves.” Jaheira mused. “He also mentions the Elven city of Suldanessellar a few times; I wonder if that is where he and Bodhi are headed.”

“It does not say why though.” Viconia filled in. “The darthiir must have offended him somehow, not that they are bad at being offensive. It did mention the portal downstairs did it not?” Viconia flipped through a few more pages. “Here.” She tapped the page with a slim finger. “It says that he primed it for awaiting a ward stone.”

Jaheira looked around.

“I don’t suppose it will be around here?” She asked.

“We can only hope.” Viconia responded and put the journal in her pack.

**

As luck would have it, the stone they needed was to be found in the coordinators bedroom which was attached to the office. Trying not to imagine why several garments that looked that they belonged to Bodhi littered the floor, Viconia and Jaheira carefully searched the small room. In the end Jaheira fished a small black opal from on of the outfits that littered the floor.

“This might be it; Imoen should take a look at it.” The druid commented. “It is a good thing Irenicus makes copies of everything.”

“What do you mean?” Viconia asked as they left the bedroom and office.

“He had a spare key for a portal in his dungeon below Athkatla.” Jaheira responded fell silent for a few seconds and then said. “The fiend is practical if nothing else.”

The two women returned to the common room and imparted what they had learned.

“So he is heading to an Elven city?” Imoen mused. “If we take the portal we may be able to catch up with him.”

Groder jumped off the sofa.

“What are we still here for then?” He asked.

“Because we have no ideas were the portal actually leads.” Imoen pointed out. “Although it is the fastest way to get to Irenicus right now.”

“As much as I dislike the idea of jumping into this unprepared.” Jaheira said and furrowed her brow in annoyance. “It is the fastest option since we have no idea how long it will take to get to his destination without it.”

The party made its way down to the portal that began buzzing when they approached signalling that the opal Jaheira found was indeed the ward stone. The portal opened on a dark vista and the party stepped through with great caution. There was a dizzying spinning feeling and then darkness.

“Falling down already?” Groder`s voice was distorted through the circular mouth and long throat. “Pathetic!” He laughed. “Pathetic!”

“How did you ever hope to avenge Tamoko? How do you hope to protect Nalia now?”

I am scared of him now. :) Really am.

And I don't think I want to know what he'll do to them. :)

“Yoshimo is dead and Groder looks so peaceful… so happy.” The girl hid her face in her knees. “I know he betrayed us but…” She trailed off. A sob wracked her body.

:(

“He is sick… his mind I mean.”

Does she mean it literally or figuratively, I wonder.

Nalia looked over at Groder and Haer`Dalis.

“Maybe you are right.” The young noble whispered.

Er. Denial. :P

“Granted but three of them dislike me and life is not an erotic novel.” The youth said lazily and yawned.

Which one doesn't? Viconia? :D

Ahhh... So that's that part? I think I'm with Groder on that one. :D

“There was some pepper in that kitchen; it would not have hurt you to use some.” Viconia commented suddenly as she closed the first drawer.

Oh, please, Viconia. Pepper is the sort of seasoning which works best if everybody puts as much as they want themselves! :P

"Yes!” Viconia answered indignant.” I have lived alone for a long time and I owned a house for a while. Did you think I kidnapped the nearby housewives to cook for me?”

...and chocolate and whipped cream, in particular, can be put to... creative uses, abbil.

Naah. In fact, I'm overjoyed by how non-constant-innuendo your Viconia is. :D

Sarevok: And Cooking is Useful.

“Then brace yourself for I also did carpentry, now bend over a bit and give Viconia something to look at besides the wall.” The Drow said.

Oops. The above comment came too soon, I see. :D

“You are different then from what I thought. We did not exactly see eye to eye before.” Jaheira commented offhand.

“Likewise.” Viconia answered while digging in the second drawer and then said more silently. “Maybe it is because I know loss as well.”

Aww. It's great. Viconia bonding with Jaheira, Nalia with Imoen, and Groder with Haer'Dalis. :)

Though I'm really, really curious now if you're going to introduce a single male character in romanceable age who isn't... immature. Not that I see many viable candidates in the foreseeable future.

Although the Fantastic Four Females will certainly enjoy certain aspects of the Underdark, I daresay. Especially with Viconia's guidance... ;)

As luck would have it, the stone they needed was to be found in the coordinators bedroom which was attached to the office. Trying not to imagine why several garments that looked that they belonged to Bodhi littered the floor,

Thank you for that mental picture... :P

The party made its way down to the portal that began buzzing when they approached signalling that the opal Jaheira found was indeed the ward stone. The portal opened on a dark vista and the party stepped through with great caution. There was a dizzying spinning feeling and then darkness.

And the Underdark! :D Beholders, illithids, duergar, kuo-toa, svirnfnebli and... drow! Yay!

Great chapter; I especially loved the bonding between Jaheira and Viconia. It felt very, very realistic. :) Thankee!

Probably not. :)

Poor Yoshi, being a bastard and all. I mean, y'know, sort of a bastard.

Trust Haer'Dalis to have had an actual encounter like that. ;)

It probably would've been easier, to be honest.

“I don’t suppose it will be around here?” She asked.

“We can only hope.” Viconia responded and put the journal in her pack.

Aww, Jaheira and Viconia bonding! I don't think I've ever seen anything so adorable. Well, maybe close. It was very realistic, though!

“He had a spare key for a portal in his dungeon below Athkatla.” Jaheira responded fell silent for a few seconds and then said. “The fiend is practical if nothing else.”

Unlike a lot of villains, I guess.

The party made its way down to the portal that began buzzing when they approached signalling that the opal Jaheira found was indeed the ward stone. The portal opened on a dark vista and the party stepped through with great caution. There was a dizzying spinning feeling and then darkness.

Wheeee, Underdark!

Something tells me Haer'Dalis is really going to like it down there...

At the very least, he will die in the belief that he made the right decision about taking on that geas. And I kinda don't feel like he was necessarily wrong, either.

As I said. I wanted to show Groder`s more unstable side.

“Come, we should return to the common room above.” Jaheira said and laid a hand on Nalia`s shoulder. “You just rest and Viconia and I will see about finding some useful information.”

Kind of. There was a thing the sparked the entire thing.

“Such is the nature of quests. Well, look at the upside.” Haer`Dalis said and slapped Groder`s leg. “It is just you and me with four beautiful women now.”

Somehow I don't htink it'll end up in a huge orgy or anything.

Nope, it is not that kind of story. But if there is enough public support for it I could probably slip an orgy in there...

“Actually several parts of my life are.” The bard smiled showing of his rows of white sharks teeth. “See there were this sweet little bard and her rather busty friend...”

Trust Haer'Dalis to have had an actual encounter like that.

I thought so too. Mine is more of a libertine then usual though.

“I think we can stop there.” Groder smiled and held up his hands.

Yes, please. :D

It probably would've been easier, to be honest.

Learing how to cook may trumph the entire kidnapping process...

“I don’t suppose it will be around here?” She asked.

“We can only hope.” Viconia responded and put the journal in her pack.

Aww, Jaheira and Viconia bonding! I don't think I've ever seen anything so adorable. Well, maybe close. It was very realistic, though!

Thankee, Thankee.

“He had a spare key for a portal in his dungeon below Athkatla.” Jaheira responded fell silent for a few seconds and then said. “The fiend is practical if nothing else.”

Unlike a lot of villains, I guess.

Yeah... He is convient...

The party made its way down to the portal that began buzzing when they approached signalling that the opal Jaheira found was indeed the ward stone. The portal opened on a dark vista and the party stepped through with great caution. There was a dizzying spinning feeling and then darkness.

Wheeee, Underdark!

Where the fun never ends!

Something tells me Haer'Dalis is really going to like it down there...

And someone is going to like him...

Wrong thing to say, boy!

Indeed. His mouth does work on its own sometimes.

“Falling down already?” Groder`s voice was distorted through the circular mouth and long throat. “Pathetic!” He laughed. “Pathetic!”

“How did you ever hope to avenge Tamoko? How do you hope to protect Nalia now?”

Holy expletive is that boy scary.

It seems like I managed to show that he is unstable as well.

The twisted laughter rang in his ears as the four bladed and spiked fists rained down on him. Yoshimo could feel it; it would not be long now.

“You will die cursed; knowing nothing you did could protect her.” Groder taunted. He brought his hideous face close to Yoshimos.

At the very least, he will die in the belief that he made the right decision about taking on that geas. And I kinda don't feel like he was necessarily wrong, either.

Well, he was not wrong about Groder but he sold the rest of them out as well so...

“She is all alone with me now…” The transformed youth brought down two fists on the man’s head, silencing the Kara-Turan forever.

*shakes head*

It is sad in its own way.

The two girls returned after a while. Nalia was gripping Yoshimos katana tightly in one hand, the other was squeezing Imoen`s hand. Tears flowed freely down the redheads cheeks. Her eyes reflected the sadness but also a certain determination.

Nalia has it rough for while now.

“I know but I remember how he was before. It may be silly of me to cling to that but I really don’t want to lose those days. I really don’t. They are all I have left.”

How was he before, anyway?

Kinda normal... I need to work in a flashback somewhere.

“This is just perfect…” Groder muttered. “Now I don’t have a soul or whatever as well. At least I got to kill Yoshimo.”

Whoop de do.

Hey, he thinks of the plus things too.

“Such is the nature of quests. Well, look at the upside.” Haer`Dalis said and slapped Groder`s leg. “It is just you and me with four beautiful women now.”

“Granted but three of them dislike me and life is not an erotic novel.” The youth said lazily and yawned.

Only four?

Yeah, Imoen, Nalia, Jaheira and Viconia.

“Then brace yourself for I also did carpentry, now bend over a bit and give Viconia something to look at besides the wall.” The Drow said.

:?

She gets to perv sometimes.

“No nothing.” Viconia responded and then pulled a thick book out of the desks third drawer.

;)

*nods*

“Jaheira!” Viconia called and the druid turned towards her. “I believe I have found Irenicus journal!”

Villains are always so careless with their incriminating documents...

Oh yeah, where would the hero buisness be without it?

I shouldn't post when I am tired. I meant to write 'only three?'

Not terribly heroic and dignified. I guess when the ladies don’t see it…

Tamoko?” He said surprised. “You sold yourself to Irenicus for that stupid bitch that couldn’t even…”

How stupid you have to be to say something like that? :?

“You will die cursed; knowing nothing you did could protect her.” Groder taunted. He brought his hideous face close to Yoshimos.

“She is all alone with me now…” The transformed youth brought down two fists on the man’s head, silencing the Kara-Turan forever.

That was pretty impressive and scary!

With the meagre aid from the remaining inmates the fight was soon over and Groder descended the stairs to rejoin the party. Nalia rushed past him and was about to make her way up the stairs when Groder called after her.

“I would not go up there if I where you!”

I am guessing Yoshimo did not leave a good looking corpse.

I still think that odd ghost is up to no good…

“Yoshimo is dead and Groder looks so peaceful… so happy.” The girl hid her face in her knees. “I know he betrayed us but…” She trailed off. A sob wracked her body.

Yeah, if you expected this to somehow affect Groder, then you could not be more wrong… he also doesn’t care one bit about your grief.

“I know but I remember how he was before. It may be silly of me to cling to that but I really don’t want to lose those days. I really don’t. They are all I have left.”

Poor Imoen, let’s hope she has better days in the future, then she won’t have to cling to these memories.

“Such is the nature of quests. Well, look at the upside.” Haer`Dalis said and slapped Groder`s leg. “It is just you and me with four beautiful women now.”

And your chances with any of them are very, very remote.

We have probably heard enough now.

“Then brace yourself for I also did carpentry, now bend over a bit and give Viconia something to look at besides the wall.” The Drow said.

:? I think that out of all BG2 females, Jaheira and Viconia have the by far greatest slash potential.

“You are different then from what I thought. We did not exactly see eye to eye before.” Jaheira commented offhand.

“Likewise.” Viconia answered while digging in the second drawer and then said more silently. “Maybe it is because I know loss as well.”

They have plenty of things to bond on. It’s just that most of the times they seem happier hating one another. ;)

Yuck. Then again, not worse than looting a corpse.

“Because we have no ideas were the portal actually leads.” Imoen pointed out. “Although it is the fastest way to get to Irenicus right now.”

Not necessarily. He might have configured it to lead elsewhere after he escaped through it.

The party made its way down to the portal that began buzzing when they approached signalling that the opal Jaheira found was indeed the ward stone. The portal opened on a dark vista and the party stepped through with great caution. There was a dizzying spinning feeling and then darkness.

Whee. I hated underdark in the game, but it lends lots of great material for stories.

He never was very heroic to begin with.

Thankee. I guess I do manage to convey that Groder is supposed to be a little bit scary.

With the meagre aid from the remaining inmates the fight was soon over and Groder descended the stairs to rejoin the party. Nalia rushed past him and was about to make her way up the stairs when Groder called after her.

After the slayer? No...

“Excellent!” He said. “Now that this institution is in my hands we can actually get some real work done here.” Then the ghost pointed at the inmates. Invasive Neurosurgery!!

You got that right. I just heap it on Nalia...

“I know but I remember how he was before. It may be silly of me to cling to that but I really don’t want to lose those days. I really don’t. They are all I have left.”

Poor Imoen, let’s hope she has better days in the future, then she won’t have to cling to these memories.

There might even be romance in there in that future somewhere.

“Such is the nature of quests. Well, look at the upside.” Haer`Dalis said and slapped Groder`s leg. “It is just you and me with four beautiful women now.”

Yeah. He has a small chance with Viccy but that may change...

Our poor ears will want to flee if he continued.

Sometimes I kind of drift in that direction with them and then I start wondering if I really should do that.

“You are different then from what I thought. We did not exactly see eye to eye before.” Jaheira commented offhand.

Heh... maybe. There is not much hatin going on here though.

As luck would have it, the stone they needed was to be found in the coordinators bedroom which was attached to the office. Nah, expect the corpse doesn`t give you horrid mental images.

“Because we have no ideas were the portal actually leads.” Imoen pointed out. “Although it is the fastest way to get to Irenicus right now.”

Yeah but you know... heh heh...

I liked that bit alot and I do agree it has good story potential.

I suppose this chapter is exacerbating my already considerable enmity towards the brat. In X, Kotori was decapitated, and then wires pulling on her body ripped it limb from limb. It was a tragic, for her, and for Kamui who was forced to watch one he cared for die so bloodily. In Groder's case, I would wish to see him being the one getting ripped limb from limb, since he is incapable of caring for anyone except himself. Perhaps you could consider giving him to Demogorgon, so that Groder's soul can be tortured for eternity? Perhaps as his fate, entrust Groder's soul to Lloth's tender ministrations?

X?

Groders fate is as of yet undetermined... It may invlove Imoen many years after TOB.

As for Lloth, Groder will be meeting her very soon.

X/1999, a manga by Clamp-tachi. I'm not sure if you'd be interested in such a thing, but it might be worth a try. Let's just say that the women of Clamp are notorious for subjecting their characters to at first experienceing happiness before ripping it to shreds in a rather cruel yet somehow tender manner. Perhaps it's something you might want to try for Groder

If he's meeting Lloth soon, I look forward to what you have planned for that section and what Lloth's going to do to him. Even Demogorgon, down the road. However frightening Groder might be, it would be a good reminder there are entities more powerful and monstrous than him, just to keep him from getting too cocky.

Ah... The only thing I have seen/read by Clamp is that one with the robot girl... Chii... I can`t for the life of me remember the name of it...

Well, I do hope that the meeting will be intresting at least. It is not everyday that the spider queen mainfests herself to surfacers.
