I kind off don`t like this chapter or the next one. It felt like I was writing text adventures or something. Anyways enjoy!

Oh… Imoen may seem a bit odd when it comes to Groder but she will explain herself in a future chapter.

Beloved Child 46

When consciousness returned to Groder, he found that he was still in the glass cylinder. The boy struggled to get to his feet and leaned on the glass. Only Irenicus and Bodhi were there, standing on the floor before the cylinder. Groder felt ill and dizzy, he almost fell down when he tried to move.

“What did you do to me?” He demanded of the mage.

“You warrant no villain’s explanation from me, Bhaalchild. I and Bodhi have been restored at your and Imoen`s expense. At the expense of your divine souls and our curse is now yours.” Irenicus told the boy and then turned to Bodhi. “Dispose of them, sister and then contact our friends in the dark.”

The cylinder was lifted of the ground and Groder stumbled forward. A vampire appeared seemingly out of nowhere and caught him. It looked over to Bodhi.

“Take the little mouise to his friends.” She crooned.

**

After being unceremoniously dumped on the ground by the vampire that had been carrying him, Groder looked around. The vampire transformed into mist and slithered away.

The room had four stairs, one going in each direction. It was a long way to the roof above and a long section of the floor was raised high above. Just like the floors and the walls, the rising platform was absolutely smooth. Groder found that the party’s weapons had been dumped in a heap in the middle of the room. The rest of the party had gathered by it. Imoen was there as well sitting on the floor, the pink haired girl looked pale and haunted but lucid. The boy approached slowly.

“Do you need any healing?” Jaheira asked Imoen. The girl shook her head lightly.

“Nah, I’m ok, you know… eh considering I had my soul ripped from me. I just feel a bit tired.” Imoen answered and looked around. “I wasn’t all here before.” She shrugged her shoulders a bit. “So who is everybody?” Imoen pulled a bit at one of Viconia`s pants legs. “I know Vicky but not the others.” The Drow smiled wryly at this.

“It can wait a bit child.” Jaheira began but Imoen interrupted her. The girl slapped her own forehead. “Sheesh, where are my manners. I am Imoen, nice to metcha!” She told Haer`Dalis and Nalia.

Haer`Dalis bowed with flourish and introduced himself.

“Haer`Dalis at your service, bard, actor, poet and lover extraordinaire.” His purple hair fell in front of his smiling tattooed face.

Imoen chuckled and a small smile appeared on her face. Nalia bowed her head a bit.

“My name is Nalia De`Arnise, I am afraid I won’t be very sociable just now.” The redheaded mages face still showed that she had been crying. Imoen nodded.

“So where is the squirt?” The pink haired rouge asked her face a bit more open among obvious friends. Imoen looked around a bit more.

Groder sighed. He hoped she would not start harping on about the ribbon or anything like that. He still felt a bit off after whatever Irenicus had done to him and was not in the mood for Imoen. Clicking footsteps began filling the room, coming from the raised platform. Bodhi appeared at its end, a smirk on her face. The vampire stopped legs apart and hands on her hips. The undead temptress wore an odd garment that looked like a long leather skirt that had the front cut away. A simple leather top was wrapped around her chest.

“Well, little mousies.” She purred. “I hope you have had nice little reunion. Now I was supposed to kill you but that is boring.” The vampire giggled and waved her hand at them. “Instead you get to run around here for a while and then I come hunting you. That is much more fun!”

“So no being a good little girl?” Groder said and pulled Azure Edge out of the pile of weapons.

“But I am a bad girl, you know that.” Bodhi responded and bent forward. “You better start running little mousies; I am coming for you soon. This entire maze is under my control now. Say hi if you meet the old caretaker of this place.” The vampire turned on her heels and sashayed away.

“So what do we do now?” Viconia asked after Bodhi had left. “This place will undoubtedly be filled with traps and monsters.”

“Since our rogue stabbed us in the back we need Imoen`s nimble fingers and that means that she gets off her butt.” Groder said and leaned close to Imoen. “Otherwise we may as well leave her here.”

Imoen rose and slapped him.

“Why did you do that?” Imoen choked out. “We were friends, I was your friend.” The last was nearly a plea.

“Notice the past tense.” Groder quipped. “That was long ago so start being useful.”

“What happened to you…?” She whispered and then slowly made her way over to Jaheira.

“This is not the time Groder.” Jaheira snapped at the boy and then clasped Imoen`s shoulder. Nalia simply hovered nearby. “We have to get out of this place and that WILL take teamwork.”

Groder threw up his arms in the air.

“Damn it! I apologize alright. It is just that I have had something done to me and I am still tired.” The boy yelled.

Imoen crossed her arms.

“Do the dance.” The mage stated.

Groder paled and shook his head.

“Do the dance or I won’t forgive you for being mean.” Imoen said looking dead serious. “There may even be a trap I might miss… at groin level.” She added.

“At least you seem in better spirits and I am glad but this is hardly the time.” Jaheira began but Groder interrupted her by starting to dance.

It was supposed to be done with more grace but Groder`s entire body was rigid so the movements of the dance looked spasmodic and comical. The boy concentrated on looking at the floor.

“So guys… what am I going to wear and use?” Imoen asked and gesticulated at her tattered dark tunic and short skirt. “The cowlies even stole my spellbook, it is upstairs somewhere. I can still cast spells but they are not all that great.”

“Ah! We completely forgot to bring equipment for you.” Jaheira covered her forehead with a hand and sighed deeply.

Groder had stopped dancing and begun muttering under his breath, face red. Viconia patted him on the shoulder.

“That was horrible.” The Drow said. “If we are done with the circus antics maybe we can move on now?”

“Imoen, you walk in the middle of us since you are unprotected.” Jaheira instructed.

“Wow, this is a really poor rescue.” The girl answered.

**

They walked through a hall that twisted and turned and came back to the room they had awoken in. The place was cold and the walls bleed perspiration. The low howl of winds entering from some place unknown and the constant beat of boots on the stone floor where the only sounds the travelled through the place. Up another pair of stairs led into another corridor, when the party had moved a few feet into it, Imoen squatted on the corridor floor and traced a finger on the ground. The girl muttered a few words.

“Aha!” She exclaimed. “There is a warding glyph here. It is almost faded away.” The girl looked around. “We can just pass by it if we press to the wall.”

Said and done, the party moved down the corridor while pressing against the wall. Imoen pointed out several more glyphs.

“They are hard to see because of their age. I don’t think anyone has been down here for a long time.” She reported as they reached the end of the corridor where it split to the left and right. The corridor going left stretched into darkness and the right most ended with a thick wooden door.

After some short deliberation the party chose the door. After pushing it open they found themselves in a small room. The floor was blue tiled and blood splattered. A dark red stain began in the middle of the room and went on to a large ornate stone coffin at the back of it. Sunlight streamed down from a circular window high above.

“What is that doing here? It is kind of creepy.” Imoen said as they entered the room. “And all the blood running to it… didn’t Bodhi say something about the old caretaker?” She shook her head.

Imoen and Nalia checked each side of the coffin for traps. When they were both satisfied, they tried to open to coffin to no avail. The lid would not budge.

“Gee, that’s annoying.” Imoen said.

“This entire place has been annoying so far.” Groder grumbled and leaned against a wall. He tried to gauge how far up it was to the window but the walls were to smooth to climb anyway.

“Mazes are annoying by default, My raven.” Haer`Dalis said.

“Move aside.” Viconia said to Nalia and Imoen. Then she pulled at her belt. “I keep forgetting that I am wearing this.”

The Drow began pushing the lid of the ornate coffin and it slowly moved. She managed to push the lid off and it fell to the floor with a loud thud. Viconia hissed and drew back from the open coffin.

Weapons ready, the rest of the party moved in with Imoen and Nalia waiting by the door. The coffin held a massacred vampire. The green robes the man had once worn were in tatters, long deep and precise cuts riddled his chest and arms. A hand inscribed with a rune lay on the caretaker’s chest; it was the man’s own. The pale man’s eyes moved over the party’s faces.

“Not… Killjoy… End it… Please…” The man ground out.

Groder shrugged and Jaheira nodded. Haer´Dalis neatly sliced through the man’s neck. As the body turned to dust, only the hand with the rune remained. A ghostly visage of how the man looked in life appeared floating over the coffin, startling the party. A mild looking bald man dressed in robes.

“Thank you. Thank you for freeing me from her and from him… The hand will unlock the exit. In the past you would have had to find a gem hidden somewhere in these rooms but now…” The ghost said and faded from sight.

Groder carefully picked up the hand.

“So who wants to carry it?” He asked jovially.

**

“I don’t see why I had to carry it.” Groder complained and poked at the hand that was resting in one of his coat pockets.

**

They had traversed yet another set of corridors, the ones that led left from the intersection were they had found the room with the coffin. Halfway through it, the walls had slid aside and three of the lumbering insectiods known as Umber Hulks had set upon them. Driven mad with hunger the great insects fought ferociously. During the fight Imoen`s fire spells proved lifesaving and burned two of the beasts to death. The third was felled by the combined efforts of Jaheira and Viconia.

When the party returned to the main room that they had started in they ascended the last stair, the southernmost one and found themselves before a large stone head. As they approached, it spoke in a dull voice.

“The way is unbarred, master Dace.”

The stone head opened its mouth wide and revealed a passage leading down, deeper into the Spellhold maze.

“I suggest we rest a while before proceeding,” Jaheira said. “Those Umber Hulks were a nasty surprise.”

Viconia stretched.

“I agree.” The cleric yawned a little. “A short break will be welcome.”

They all sat down, resting against the chambers wall. Groder and Imoen ended up next to each other.

“So.” Groder began slowly and looked at Imoen. “You are a Bhaalspawn too then?”

“Yep.” Imoen nodded. “It feels kind of weird knowing it since I was never affected by it like you and Sarevok.” The pink haired mage creased her brow. “When I think about it, I guess I ought to have figured it out when everything was unravelling for you. With me also being an orphan and being brought to Candlekeep by Gorion and all.”

“But what about the three years between us two?” Groder asked. “I am sixteen now and you are what? Nineteen? Sarevok was about your age wasn’t he?”

“I guess so but he seemed older. It doesn’t make any sense. And when did you become sixteen?” She raised an eyebrow at him.

“Eh, I think about a week ago.” The blonde youth shrugged.

Imoen scrunched up her face. “Now about the time. Maybe they used magic to keep you unborn, maybe your mom wanted to trick Bhaal or something?

“That cun…” Groder halted himself. “No… I don’t think so. What about the time?” He pressed. “Bhaal died during the time of troubles so there is no way it happened afterwards.”

“There is time missing between the time of troubles and the time you arrived at Candlekeep. I came a year after you and you were five then so I was seven or eight.” Imoen scratched her head. “The time lag just doesn’t make any sense. If you were not born until I was three the only reason I can think off is magic.”

“It seems awfully convenient to just say that a wizard did it.” Groder argued.

“But magic is basically just energy that is reshaped. If you are powerful enough you can do some pretty amazing things.” Imoen responded. “Irenicus created clones of that woman practically from his own memory. Both your mother and Gorion were mages right? So it is possible that since we all that is the Bhaalchildren were supposed to…” She got a disgusted look on her face. “Be sacrificed so that Bhaal could live again, they tired to make sure you would not be born after the point of the sacrifice. Assuming that the Bhaal priesthood had some set date for it.”

“They had.” Jaheira said. Imoen and Groder looked at her in surprised. “Gorion spoke of it only once and little of it even then, it was clear that it pained him greatly.” The half-elf sighed and lowered her head, braids falling in front of her face. “It took place about three and half years after Bhaals demise. That was how long it had taken for the Death Stalkers to collect every mother and child. When the Harpers attacked the ritual it descended into chaos.”

“And grabbing me was simple as I was the youngest there.” Groder said. “This is all fascinating but it still does not explain the time difference. I have always found it strange ever since I learnt about Bhaal. The books and such at Candlekeep did not offer any explanations of it.”

“Hey!” Imoen suddenly yelled and pointed wildly at Groder. “You knew you were a Bhaalchild before we even left Candlekeep. I always thought it odd that you took the news so well.”

“Tch…” Groder snorted and nodded in Jaheira´s direction. “They knew it too. The whole damn world would have known it before me if I had not found it out myself. Imagine running around the sword coast for about a year or more without knowing why you where hunted or anything.”

Jaheira crossed her arms.

“Did Gorion know that you knew?” She asked.

Groder smiled.

“Of course not.” He answered.

He will probably regret not saying ‘kill’ instead of ‘dispose’, here.

Yes, extraordinarily bad at all the previously mentioned.

Groder sighed. He hoped she would not start harping on about the ribbon or anything like that. He still felt a bit off after whatever Irenicus had done to him and was not in the mood for Imoen. That image is absolutely nasty… yikes.

Not trusting Nalia’s rogue skills, is he? I wouldn’t either. ;)

“At least you seem in better spirits and I am glad but this is hardly the time.” Jaheira began but Groder interrupted her by starting to dance.

Mrh, almost seems like Imoen is trying to humiliate him?

“Ah! We completely forgot to bring equipment for you.” Jaheira covered her forehead with a hand and sighed deeply.

I just strip Yoshi of all gear before entering. Would be weird in a story, that.

After some short deliberation the party chose the door. After pushing it open they found themselves in a small room. The floor was blue tiled and blood splattered. Yes, let’s skip the gem, please.

I am confused. ;)

Clearly, some of the Bhaal children were not there at the temple, though. Thinking about the Five, here…

“Did Gorion know that you knew?” She asked.

Groder smiled.

“Of course not.” He answered.

Well, I guess it doesn’t matter anymore now.

Hmm. You can just feel the love between Imoen and Groder in this one... ;)

But we got a lot of character development here... The Importance of the Interval, for one thing. It's clearly a Plot Device, so you're having me Intrigued. ;)

This must be the text adventure part. :)

“Haer`Dalis at your service, bard, actor, poet and lover extraordinaire.” His purple hair fell in front of his smiling tattooed face.

Mwaah! Your H'D has purple hair? Why didn't I know?

Although I think I prefer him in dove grey. :)

Better Bodhi than Imoen, eh?
Then, again, your Imoen is... ah.

Imoen rose and slapped him.

Yes. That's it. Calling Groder squirt, slapping him and then humiliating him... Yes, I'm beginning to see how he might... not entirely care for her.

Don't think I missed that hint about the ribbon... I'm just hoping it's not something you already wrote about and I should now remember, as opposed to a Plot Hint. :D

“Do the dance.” The mage stated.

“Wow, this is a really poor rescue.” The girl answered.

I rest my case. She's vicious. Like a prom queen.

Oh, btw... I read in one of your comments for the previous chapter how you decided that you managed to make Groder universally hated... Don't be too proud of yourself. 8)

I don't hate him.

“Mazes are annoying by default, My raven.” Haer`Dalis said.

Yes. Mazes just beg one to rewind and get to the Good Parts. ;)

It's a bit of shame you couldn't just write, "A couple hours later, the party were tired enough that the Author could get to the Good Parts." :D

Still... sigh. While it's not the scene of fighting in Bodhi's lair - that one was really great, between the vampires' eyes lighting up, Frost dying, the cliffhanger and all, it had tension, action, emotion and more! - given the source material, you've done a decent job of it, I think. :D

“Not… Killjoy… End it… Please…” The man ground out.

 Aha! Another Plot Hint!

“I don’t see why I had to carry it.” Groder complained and poked at the hand that was resting in one of his coat pockets.

:)

“Of course not.” He answered.

And this ends the Good Parts. For now, at least... As I wrote in the beginning, I now feel Appropriately Intrigued! (And I love feeling Intrigued!)

Are we meeting Killjoy on Level Two? :D

Irenicus: Must give better instructions to spazz sister.

“Haer`Dalis at your service, bard, actor, poet and lover extraordinaire.” His purple hair fell in front of his smiling tattooed face.

Haer disagrees.

Heh... Thanks...

I just realized that I never mention if she wears something "in front"

“Since our rogue stabbed us in the back we need Imoen`s nimble fingers and that means that she gets off her butt.” Groder said and leaned close to Imoen. “Otherwise we may as well leave her here.”

Not trusting Nalia’s rogue skills, is he? I wouldn’t either. :D

Lvl 4 thief... that is asking for trouble...

“At least you seem in better spirits and I am glad but this is hardly the time.” Jaheira began but Groder interrupted her by starting to dance.

Mrh, almost seems like Imoen is trying to humiliate him? ;)

Yep. She has been dealing with him for the longest of all the party so...

“Ah! We completely forgot to bring equipment for you.” Jaheira covered her forehead with a hand and sighed deeply.

I just strip Yoshi of all gear before entering. Would be weird in a story, that.

Kind off...

She will get some gear later!

After some short deliberation the party chose the door. After pushing it open they found themselves in a small room. The floor was blue tiled and blood splattered. Yes, please! We will be skipping alot down here.

Explain your confusion and I shall try to unravel it.

I was under the impression that all children were, they just scattered into the night after the ritual was attacked.

“Did Gorion know that you knew?” She asked.

Groder smiled.

“Of course not.” He answered.

Well, I guess it doesn’t matter anymore now.

But that doesn`t mean that Groder won`t try to rile up Jaheira for the hell of it.

Well, their relationship is a bit... odd...

You do mean the time interval they are talking about in the end right? Bare with me, it is early and the coffee has yet to seep into my brain.

The room had four stairs, one going in each direction. It was a long way to the roof above and a long section of the floor was raised high above. Yep, there is more where that came from. It is hard to make the maze seem logical at all. :D

“Haer`Dalis at your service, bard, actor, poet and lover extraordinaire.” His purple hair fell in front of his smiling tattooed face.

Mwaah! Your H'D has purple hair? Why didn't I know?

Although I think I prefer him in dove grey. :P

I think I mentioned it once or twice. :D

Also, I am rather color blind so I though his hair was purple in the portrait.

Groder sighed. He hoped she would not start harping on about the ribbon or anything like that. He still felt a bit off after whatever Irenicus had done to him and was not in the mood for Imoen. I suppose...

My Imoen is...? :D

Imoen rose and slapped him.

Yes. That's it. Calling Groder squirt, slapping him and then humiliating

him... Yes, I'm beginning to see how he might... not entirely care for her.

Well, all of that is kind of the result of a year on the road and Irenicus. She might have done similar things earlier but with a much more good natured disposion.

Don't think I missed that hint about the ribbon... I'm just hoping it's not something you already wrote about and I should now remember, as opposed to a Plot Hint. :D

I mentioned it once during the first dream where dream-Imoen comments that he lost the ribbon she gave him. It is referring to that.

“Do the dance.” The mage stated.

“Wow, this is a really poor rescue.” The girl answered.

I rest my case. She's vicious. Like a prom queen.

To be honest that was not my intention but whatever works... 8)

Oh, btw... I read in one of your comments for the previous chapter how you decided that you managed to make Groder universally hated... Don't be too proud of yourself. :P

I don't hate him.

Fiddlesticks!

Deriously though... I don`t think he is very likable but...

“Mazes are annoying by default, My raven.” Haer`Dalis said.

Yes. Mazes just beg one to rewind and get to the Good Parts. ;)

Yeah. I really wish I could press more sense out of it but...

It's a bit of shame you couldn't just write, "A couple hours later, the party were tired enough that the Author could get to the Good Parts." :)

If it was comedy... alas...

Still... sigh. While it's not the scene of fighting in Bodhi's lair - that one was really great, between the vampires' eyes lighting up, Frost dying, the cliffhanger and all, it had tension, action, emotion and more! - given the source material, you've done a decent job of it, I think. :)

 Aha! Another Plot Hint!

Killjoy will be coming along sometime soon...

“I don’t see why I had to carry it.” Groder complained and poked at the hand that was resting in one of his coat pockets.

:D

He really doesn`t. ;)

“Of course not.” He answered.

And this ends the Good Parts. For now, at least... As I wrote in the beginning, I now feel Appropriately Intrigued! (And I love feeling Intrigued!)

Are we meeting Killjoy on Level Two? :)

Lvl 3 I am afraid...

Only a chapter and a half to go before the mazr is gone and then... my favourite part of the game...

Well... Perhaps 'vicious' is a bit too strong a word, but she really does behave... well, nasty. Not funny-nasty, but nasty. Perhaps that's just to Groder?

“So what do we do now?” Viconia asked after Bodhi had left. “This place will undoubtedly be filled with traps and monsters.”

“Since our rogue stabbed us in the back we need Imoen`s nimble fingers and that means that she gets off her butt.” Groder said and leaned close to Imoen. “Otherwise we may as well leave her here.”

Imoen: You, little bastard!

Imoen rose and slapped him.

Imoen: And there are others where it came from!

You would have thought he'd understand by now that it's not wise to make a foe of the party's rogue...

Sarevok: And here I thought I was the most evil Bhaalspawn...

Imoen: Now, who's your daddy?
Bhaal: That would be me...
Imoen: Eeek!

“Wow, this is a really poor rescue.” The girl answered.

That's quite an understatement, now... ;)

Groder carefully picked up the hand.

“So who wants to carry it?” He asked jovially.

**

“I don’t see why I had to carry it.” Groder complained and poked at the hand that was resting in one of his coat pockets.

:?

They had traversed yet another set of corridors, the ones that led left from the intersection were they had found the room with the coffin. Halfway through it, the walls had slid aside and three of the lumbering insectiods known as Umber Hulks had set upon them. Driven mad with hunger the great insects fought ferociously. During the fight Imoen`s fire spells proved lifesaving and burned two of the beasts to death. The third was felled by the combined efforts of Jaheira and Viconia.

Gal powa! :D

“I suggest we rest a while before proceeding,” Jaheira said. “Those Umber Hulks were a nasty surprise.”

Viconia stretched.

“I agree.” The cleric yawned a little. “A short break will be welcome.”

Bodhi: Hey! this wasn't supposed to be a picnic, you know?

“Hey!” Imoen suddenly yelled and pointed wildly at Groder. “You knew you were a Bhaalchild before we even left Candlekeep. I always thought it odd that you took the news so well.”

“Tch…” Groder snorted and nodded in Jaheira´s direction. “They knew it too. The whole damn world would have known it before me if I had not found it out myself. Imagine running around the sword coast for about a year or more without knowing why you where hunted or anything.”

He do have a point.

Jaheira crossed her arms.

“Did Gorion know that you knew?” She asked.

Groder smiled.

“Of course not.” He answered.

Hmm. You can just feel the love between Imoen and Groder in this one... :?

But we got a lot of character development here... The Importance of the Interval, for one thing. It's clearly a Plot Device, so you're having me Intrigued. :D

Well, their relationship is a bit... odd...

You do mean the time interval they are talking about in the end right? Bare with me, it is early and the coffee has yet to seep into my brain.

Yes, that's what I meant. ;)

Thankee Thankee

“Do the dance.” The mage stated.

“Wow, this is a really poor rescue.” The girl answered.

I rest my case. She's vicious. Like a prom queen.

To be honest that was not my intention but whatever works... 8)

Well... Perhaps 'vicious' is a bit too strong a word, but she really does behave... well, nasty. Not funny-nasty, but nasty. Perhaps that's just to Groder?

I really did not think of her as nasty but... maybe it just is towards Groder... we will see in future chapters.

It's a bit of shame you couldn't just write, "A couple hours later, the party were tired enough that the Author could get to the Good Parts." :D

If it was comedy... alas...

Well. Erm. That's what I'm planning to do to that maze: "There was a maze. They crossed it."

Ahh.... That is good.

Only a chapter and a half to go before the mazr is gone and then... my favourite part of the game...

Ust Natha! Wherein Intrigue and Betrayal galore! :D

Betryals and bloodmagicks! ;)

BL Imoen: True dat!

Yeah... but sometimes he is not so wise.

Groder threw up his arms in the air.

Well, they did not count on Irenicus... no one ever expects Irenicus.

Heh... I try. 8)

Those two have an abundance of it!

The part of UB that makes you hunt them is not installed... nyah nyah!

Yeah, he gets to sometimes :D

Stay tuned for the eventual angry Jaheira!
