Daie woke, and wiped the sleep from his eyes. For a moment he wondered why he had been asleep, not in reverie, but the events of the last few days quickly returned to mind, and he groaned and dropped his head back onto the pillow.

He heard a giggle, and opened an eye to see Maron watching him, covering her laughter with a hand.

“Good morning, Daie. Did you sleep well?”

He laughed bitterly, and slowly sat up. His stomach was wrapped in bandages, and another covered his forehead and an eye, with only the tip of an ear poking out from underneath the heavy linen.

“Urgh, how long have I been asleep?”

Maron chewed her lip before answering. “A day or two. You were badly wounded, you’d lost a lot of blood by the time we found you. Besides, that wasn’t an antidote potion you drank.”

Daie sighed in exasperation. “What was it?”

She raised her head, a broad grin displayed on her pretty face. “That was a bottle of spirits, for cleaning wounds.”

As he groaned, she shook his shoulders and laughed happily. “You took that like a man, Daie, I’m impressed!”

“But,” he said, raising his eyes to hers “why didn’t the venom kill me?”
She ruffled his hair, affectionately. “Silly, spider venom sends the victim to sleep, it doesn’t kill.”
“And since elves are resistant to sleep inducing…”
“Yes.” Her face darkened. “But, the alcohol dehydrated you, and since you were losing lots of blood, you were in serious danger. It took all three of us to keep you alive.”

They sat for a moment in silence, before Maron tapped his arm and got up.

“I’m not the one you should be speaking with. Go and see Raven, she’s been in such a state.”

He nodded, and threw a tunic over his shoulders. He looked back to her, but she urged him away.

Looking about, he waited til no-one was watching and then strode to Raven’s tent, and ducked inside. She was asleep; her blankets up to her shoulders, but the thin material over her collarbone showed him that she was wearing a shift, at least. Daie shrugged the tunic off, and lifted the blankets to lie next to her. He closed his eyes, heard her sigh of relief, and felt her pull his head to her chest and hold him tight.

“Thought I was going to lose you” she murmured.
Daie shifted his head to rest his cheek against her breast. “Never.”
“I won’t lose anything else to spiders,” she whispered, and ran a hand through his hair.
He remained silent, knowing that her words held far more meaning than he could fathom, so he waited for her continue. Eventually, she sighed.
“Daie, put your arms around me.”
He did so, carefully sliding his arms round her slender waist and holding her gently. She squeezed him as encouragement, so he held her a bit tighter, and she kissed the top of his head and relaxed somewhat.

“I don’t want to get up today. We should stay like this all day.”
“I think the Company might notice if we spend all day in bed with each other, Raven.”
“This isn’t fair.”
“Hmm?”
“This subterfuge. Why should we hide, there’s nothing wrong. Having you in my arms, Daie, it feels so right. I don’t want to hide this. What do you think?”
She loosened her grip on him, and looked down into his emerald eyes. Her own crimson orbs were wide and anxious. Daie lifted a hand to her face, and stroked her cheek.

“Raven, yes. I don’t want to conceal our relationship either. Besides, someone will find out eventually. Minstra and Maron already know, so it’s inevitable that everyone else will find out.”
Raven grinned, and kissed him soundly.

“So, darthiir, about that plan to not get up.”

“Raven…” Daie warned, but his amused chuckle belied his tone.
“I’m joking, Daie. We have to get up so I can flaunt you. Ah!” She raised a finger. “A message arrived yesterday, darthiir. The Lord whose spear we recovered has invited us to a party he is holding tonight. I was hoping you would come.”

“Yes I’ll come, Raven. It’s been a while since I went to a party.”

“No Daie, you misunderstand me. I meant I was hoping you would go with me, as my partner.”
He raised an eyebrow. “As your date? Of course I will. I’d love to.”

Raven beamed, and kissed his forehead. “Thank you, darthiir.” She pulled him close again, and closed her eyes. Daie closed his eyes as well, his head lying against her chest. He listened to her heartbeat, and sighed contentedly. Everything was right with the world, for a while.

All good things must come to an end, however, and this time it was a polite cough and a few words from Minstra that shattered the loving bubble they rested in.
Raven spewed curses as she rose and dressed. Daie watched her, bemused from under the blankets. She stopped, and turned back to him, throwing the tunic at him. He caught it and slipped into it, buttoning it up to his throat.

He’d barely set one foot from the tent before he was grabbed and pulled into another one, and firmly pushed onto his haunches.
“Okay, Daie. You’ve been holding out on me.”

Daie raised his hands apologetically. “I’m sorry Maron, but it was a secret.”

She tucked her legs beneath her, and leant forward. “So, tell me everything, every sordid detail; positions, number of times, everything!”

He smiled, and leant back away from her. “I think you should mind your own business, Maron.”

“I don’t know whether you’ve noticed or not, Daie, but I am a priestess of Sune. Love is my business. Besides, you’re avoiding my question. What happened?”

“Well, I, ah, I…”

“You didn’t, did you?”

He sighed. “No, I didn’t.”

Maron leant back, and rolled her eyes. “Daie Vanya, you fool! The woman you’re crazy about, who has thousands of years of drow experience in the erotic arts behind her, and you didn’t do anything? What’s wrong with you? Sune’s beauty, even I’m curious as to what she knows.”

“Maron, it’s not that simple. I haven’t, you know, before.”

“Daie, I know,” she softened her tone, seeing in his eyes that her words were upsetting him.

“I mean, you had my first kiss.”

That set her back for a moment. She raised a hand and touched her lips briefly. “Really? I thought Raven…”

He shook his head. “Raven gave me a peck on the lips-that hardly counts. You were the first person to kiss me properly.”

“Oh, Daie.” She sighed, and took his hands. “Well, I suppose I have a duty to help you, though I’d help you as my friend anyway. So, why didn’t you do it?”

“I don’t know, because all I’ve ever done is kiss, and I didn’t want to move too fast.”

“You never did anything else? Where did you grow up, a monastery?”

Daie grinned sheepishly. “Suldanessallar is a conservative place. Even drinking wine at my age there would get me a stern reprimand. My father lectured me for hours after I drank too much wine one night and knocked over a hall table.”

She laughed, and shrugged her shoulders. “Okay, I understand. Now, my darling Daie, listen to me. I want to help you. So, tell me what worries you, and I shall aid you to the limit of my powers.”

The seriousness with which she spoke surprised Daie, but also calmed him somewhat. Now she was acting as a Heartwarder, she would at least be serious for once. He sat and thought for a moment, before she motioned him to speak with a wave of her hand.
He decided that there was little point keeping it bottled up anymore, and before he knew it, his fears were bursting from him like water from a dam.

“I haven’t done this before, I’m scared! What if I make a mistake; what if she laughs at me? Oh gods, what if I’m just no good?”

She sighed. “Listen, Daie. It doesn’t matter. She loves you, so whatever happens will be perfect. You have to accept that she loves you and you love her, and let it happen.” She lifted his chin and looked into his eyes. “What do you think?”

“I think you’re an angel.”

His tone confused her, but before she knew it he was kissing her. She barely had time to react and kiss him back before he’d leapt to his feet and dashed from the tent, leaving her bewildered and slightly breathless on the ground.

“Advice is usually free, Daie.”
