AC322-Two Out of Three

I cannot lie
I cannot tell you that I'm something I'm not
No matter how I try
I'll never be able to give you something
Something that I just haven't got

And all I can do is keep on telling you
I want you
I need you
But there ain't no way
I'm ever gonna love you
Now don't be sad
'Cause two out of three ain't bad

“Two Out of Three” Meatloaf

One day, sooner than he expects…

“Lord Sarevok! Lord Sarevok, sir!”

Sarevok looked up at the young lad who excitedly ran into his office. He smiled when he saw that the boy was practically hopping in his eagerness to convey his news.

“Calm down, Tolly. What has you in such a state?”

“A ship is coming into the harbor, sir, and she’s flying the Dancing Tiger’s colors!”

Sarevok’s smile grew wider. “Well then, I suppose I should go down to greet Captain Narula.”

He left his desk and strolled in a leisurely fashion towards the dock. Sarevok knew that Narula would not leave her ship until she had personally seen to every aspect of bringing the Dancing Tiger into port, so there was no need to hurry. He reached the pier just as the ship was being tied up.

He stood among the townsfolk as they laughed and waved at the sailors. Captain Narula was popular with the people of Brynnlaw, being free with her gold and keeping a close eye on her sailors.

Sarevok spotted the captain and raised his hand to wave, then froze. Narula was in the rigging shouting orders, but when she swung to the side her profile had very obviously changed. Some of the villagers around him ceased their cheers and gave him sidelong looks. It was no secret that Narula shared his bed whenever she was in port, and that he was far from the only man in her life, so he could understand the mixed emotions of his people.

He himself had no such reservations. He strode across the gangplank and shouted up the mast. “Narula! By Demogorgon’s snouts, what are you doing up there?”

She grabbed a rope and slid down, landing on the deck more lightly than he would have thought possible. “Seeing to the sails, of course, just as I always do.”

“In your condition? Are you mad? You could fall!”

“Oh, so breaking my own neck is fine, but risking a baby is a crime?”

“Do not be a fool, Narula. You are too far along not to know that your balance is off. You could misjudge your step.”

She tossed her blonde hair as she laughed. “As it so happens, Sar, my tars agree with you. They refuse to leave port until after this little demon is born.”

“Demon?”

“It must be, the way it kicks. I think it is trying to simply beat its way out.”

He stepped close to her and said softly, “Narula….”

“I know what you are going to ask, Sar, and all I can say is… maybe. I’ve counted back, and it might be yours, but it might not.”

“Actually, I was not going to ask that yet. I just wanted to say that I will have all of your things brought up to Spellhold so that you can stay with me.”

“Thanks, I appreciate that. Your soft bed would suit me better than my bunk, especially now.” She put her hands in the small of her back and stretched. “Ah, my aching backside! I could do with some sound sleep and food that didn’t taste of salt and fish.”

They settled Narula in comfortable quarters, then had a quiet supper, ignoring serious subjects for a time. After the dishes were cleared away, Sarevok said, “What do you plan to do after the baby is born?”

“I haven’t quite gotten that far. The sea is no place for a wee one, but… I don’t want to give up my ship. I’m an old salt, love, I grow restless when I don’t feel the waves under my feet. I’m caught in a storm with no port to dock in.”

He reached across the table to take her hand and squeezed it gently. “Now you know better than that, Narula. You and your child will always have a home here.”

“But how can I live within sight of the harbor without my heart breaking, Sar?”

“You truly do not know who the father is?”

“No. I… I just can’t be sure.”

“Shhh, there is no need for explanations. You’ve never made a secret of sharing your bed with other men, and I’ve never asked you not to. You have always been free to do as you pleased. Is the other man… or men… capable of being a father to your child? You do not need to name names, just tell me.”

“No, there is no question of another man wanting the babe. Probably run for it, in fact.”

“I have been thinking all through dinner, Narula, and I have come to a decision. When you feel that you must return to the sea, then you may leave the child with me. I will raise it, and you will be able to see it whenever you dock in Brynnlaw.”

Narula’s mouth fell open, then she began to laugh uproariously. “You? Raise a child? The Butcher of Baldur’s Gate, the Hero of the Bhaalspawn War, Lord Mayor of Brynnlaw, is going to bounce a wee one on his knee?” She dissolved into giggles.

Sarevok grinned in return. “I will put this hilarity down to your delicate condition. I admit that there was once I time I would have scoffed at the thought, but my life has changed since then. Truly, Narula, I mean what I say. Your child will be safe with me.”

“Even if it isn’t yours?”

“Yes. If it is mine, then I will be delighted. If not, then the baby still needs a home, and I will raise it as my own. Agreed?”

“You’re insane, love, but I’ll do it. Just don’t try to change your mind the first time it cries all night.”

“Narula, please stop pacing.”

“Why did you have to invite that damned priest here? Do you think I’m an idiot?”

“Arenthis is an old friend, and he is an excellent healer. I simply wanted you to have the best of care while you are with child. Surely you can understand that?”

“We have priests here. Why do you have to call in a stranger?”

Sarevok felt his temper rising. “A priestess of Umberlee?” he roared. “She would probably sacrifice our child to the sea. And the Tymoran will trust too much to luck.”

“There is Ismira.”

“That one would be spending all of her time flirting with me and trying to raid our wine cellar. I’ve had complaints from the Vulgar Monkey, and you know how hard they are to shock. A priestess of Sharess is not someone I want looking after you.”

At that moment Arenthis was led into the room by a servant. Sarevok’s face lit up. “Arenthis, old friend! You made good time, I see.”

“I will always answer a call for help from an old comrade. So, is this my patient?”

“Yes indeed. Arenthis of Lathander, this is Captain Narula of the Dancing Tiger. I want her and her baby to have the best of care, so naturally I thought of you.”

“A high compliment from one who knew Anomen so well.”

Sarevok nodded, concealing the stab of pain he always felt when he thought of his fallen lover. “I have had the servants prepare quarters for you, if you would like to rest.”

“No, I believe I should begin by examining our expectant mother. You are obviously close to your time, my lady.”

“No!”

“Narula!”

“You can’t fool me, Sar. You brought him here so that you can find out for sure if the baby is yours!”

“I do not understand.”

“If you aren’t the father, you won’t want it! You won’t want me! I’ll be alone.” She sank into a chair and began to sob uncontrollably.

Arenthis strode to her side and patted her shoulder. “Now, now. Such upsets are normal for a woman in your condition. You will feel better soon.”

Sarevok knelt beside her chair and took her hands. “Narula, I promised you that I will be the babe’s father in my heart, even if I am not by blood. I will not go back on my word. I truly did ask Arenthis here to care for you, not to discover our child’s bloodline.”

She sniffed. “Oh, all right. Let’s get this over with.”

“Come with me, my lady,” Arenthis said. He politely held out his hand for her, and after she hesitantly rose, he led her to the bedchamber.

Sarevok worked in his office while he waited for them to emerge. I do not care who the father is… do I? He thought wistfully of a child with his strength, a child he could see his own mannerisms and features in. Still… no matter whose blood it carries, this child will be a beloved offspring, not the center of schemes and dreams of power. He sat and daydreamed, the papers on his desk forgotten.

Finally the door to the bedchamber opened, and Arenthis emerged, followed by a subdued Narula.

The priest slapped him on the shoulder and said, “Narula is in excellent health. You obviously have been taking good care of her. And the babe is healthy as well. A fine strong lad.”

“A… a son, then? That is wonderful, Narula.” He rose from the desk and crossed to her. He held her tight and whispered in her ear, “You will have him swinging on ropes in no time.”

She gave him a smile, but her mind was obviously not on his words. Sarevok suddenly realized that Arenthis had slipped from the room. “Narula? Is everything all right?”

“He told me, Sar. I know who the father is.”

“It does not matter.”

“He… he’s yours.”

“Mine? Mine! I have a son! But… why so sad? I thought that would make you happy.”

“I thought so too. But I’ve always been a free spirit, Sar, riding the waves to wherever the currents took me. Now I’ll be tied to this port. I love this wee lad in my belly, and I know that my longing to see him will turn my wheel before I get too far. And now there is a bond between us, the bond of love for our son.”

“Narula, if having a child has brought so much worry, why… You told me long ago that you took care of that possibility.”

“I was a fool, Sar. I had run out of nararoot, but I was so glad to see you after that storm… and by the time I made it to a port where I could take care of the problem, it… it was kicking. After I felt him move, he was real to me. I had to keep him.”

“And I thank you for that. Narula, change is always frightening, but we will find a way to work everything out, I promise.”

Let go of my hands, you bastard!

“Narula, calm down. Arenthis will be here any moment now.

“I hate you! I hate all men! You sonuva….”

Arenthis hurried into the room. “I hear that the baby has decided to arrive today. What has happened so far?”

“She is wailing like a banshee and threatening to scratch my eyes out. And her, um, water, well….”

“So I see. Narula, are you feeling any discomfort?”

“Discomfort? DISCOMFORT? I’m in PAIN, you sea serpent’s droppings! Try expelling a boulder out your arse and see how you like it!”

Arenthis grinned. “Excellent! Things are progressing well.”

“Come over here and say that!”

The priest just chuckled. “Sarevok, if you will hold our wildcat, I will try to make things a bit easier.” As Sarevok kept Narula still, Arenthis cast a healing spell on the laboring mother.

She sighed and sank back into Sarevok’s arms. “Oh, that is much better. Thank your god for me, priest.”

“Thank him yourself, my dear. Lathander would gladly listen to your prayers.”

“Ha! Just like a holy man, never missing a chance to recruit for his god.” She hissed sharply. “Ooh, that was a hard one. Come on, little lad, let’s hurry this up.”

Between Arenthis’ spells and Sarevok’s soothing words, the labor passed with only minor injuries to the two men. Arenthis had a bloody nose from a kick, and Sarevok had a few scratches and a bite.

At last Narula gave a shout. A few moments later Arenthis held up the baby. “Ah, the little fellow has a good healthy cry. He has your lungs, Sarevok.” He placed the baby in Narula’s arms.

“So, wee one, you are the one who’s caused me all this trouble,” she said softly. She stroked the fine pale hair that covered the infant’s scalp. “A big strapping boy you’ll be, I can see that now.”

“He is beautiful, Narula,” Sarevok said softly. He gave her a gentle hug. When he spoke, the baby’s head turned towards him.

“Look, Sar, he knows your voice. So, what are you going to name him?”

“Me? I thought you would do the honors.”

“No, if the boy will be living with you, you should choose.”

Sarevok thought for a long moment. Then he said, “There was a word that Tamoko taught me… gyoukou. It means ‘unexpected good fortune’. Something wonderful that you never thought could happen. I never imagined that the day would come when I would have a son.”

“Gyoukou it is, then.”

The small boy ran down the dock and cried out, “Look, Dada, ships!”

Sarevok chuckled. “Yes, Gyoukou, more ships. Brynnlaw is a busy harbor.” He swept his son up onto his shoulder. “There. Can you see better?”

“Better, Dada.”

The former Bhaalspawn smiled to himself as Gyoukou giggled and pointed out every ship that had docked since the previous day. I will not be able to carry him this way for much longer. The lad grows bigger every day, it seems.

Fatherhood had come easier to him than he had expected. At first Sarevok found it a bit unnerving to gaze into eyes the exact same shade of murky green as his own, but in time he found it reassuring. His son looked so much like him, except for inheriting Narula’s golden hair. I will not survive as a god or divine creature, but through Gyoukou. In the Abyss I never would have believed that I would be content with the immortality of the common man.

Sarevok nodded in greeting at the sailors and townsfolk who smiled and waved at the pair. Normally Gyoukou called out to people he knew, but Sarevok suddenly realized that his son had grown unusually quiet.

He stopped to set the boy down and said, “Is there something the matter? You did not say hello to Mistress Milso, and I know how much you like her.”

Gyoukou looked up at him, his face grave for such a small child. “Will Momma’s ship ever come back?”

Sarevok’s heart sank. The question was one he had dreaded for some time. It had been nearly two years since the Dancing Tiger had docked in Brynnlaw, and Sarevok knew that Narula would never stay away for so long voluntarily. “I do not know, son,” he said gently. “It has been a very long time. But I do know this. If your mother could return, she would. She loves you very much.”

The boy nodded slowly. “I love Momma, too. Do you love Momma?”

Sarevok’s chest tightened. He knew that Gyoukou barely remembered Narula. The boy’s image of his mother was based on the portrait Sarevok had convinced her to sit for. She had admitted that the painting, which portrayed her laughing as she wresting a ship’s wheel in a storm, made her appear quite dashing.

Had he loved Narula? They had laughed together, shared a bed, and enjoyed many happy hours. But her absence had not left a hole in his soul as Tamoko’s death had done. It had not left him bereft and empty as he had been after losing Anomen. Narula had been a friend and lover, but not his love.

But looking down into his son’s eyes, those eyes so much like his own, Sarevok knew what answer the child needed from him. He smiled and said softly, “Yes, Gyoukou, I love your mother very much.”

Awwwwww! :) I'm so very glad to see that Sarevok gets some happiness at the end, I think he really deserves it after all he's gone through.

Oh, and I loved the birthing scene. :) Kicking and screaming indeed, and who could blame her.
Rogues do it from behind.

Do you remember what I said about it being bad if Narula were to be Sarevok's new Twue Wuv back when she was introduced?

This new true love has my full support, up to and including the form of relationship you gave Sarevok and Narula :)

I seem to remember telling you a while back that Sarevok would have love in his life again... just not how most people thought. :)

Oh, and I loved the birthing scene. :) Kicking and screaming indeed, and who could blame her.

*chuckles* I stole a few lines from my own childbirth experiences. At one point my doctor stuck his head in my room and said, "The nurse told me you were in pain. Wonderful, we're making progress!" I yelled, "Come over here and say that!"

He has found a measure of peace, and that is more than he hoped for.

It was no secret that Narula shared his bed whenever she was in port, and that he was far from the only man in her life, so he could understand the mixed emotions of his people.

I must be especially slow today, because when I read 'profile' for the first time, the only thing I could think of was the profile of her face, so the rest of the paragraph was mighty bewildering.

D'oh!

“I have been thinking all through dinner, Narula, and I have come to a decision. When you feel that you must return to the sea, then you may leave the child with me. I will raise it, and you will be able to see it whenever you dock in Brynnlaw.”

:) Boy, he *has* changed!

Arenthis never did learn the nature of Sarevok & Anomen's relationship, did he?

“He… he’s yours.”

“Mine? Mine! I have a son! But… why so sad? I thought that would make you happy.”

“I thought so too. But I’ve always been a free spirit, Sar, riding the waves to wherever the currents took me. Now I’ll be tied to this port. I think I can understand why she's nervous, but she's not thinking it through. If Sarevok raises her son, whether he's Sarevok's son or not, that bond will be there. Or maybe she hadn't accepted that Sarevok would love the child even if he wasn't his own.

BTW, I didn't know FR priests could tell who determine a child's parentage. Is that a divination spell?

Sarevok thought for a long moment. Then he said, “There was a word that Tamoko taught me… gyoukou. It means ‘unexpected good fortune’. Something wonderful that you never thought could happen. I never imagined that the day would come when I would have a son.”

Very sweet.

The boy nodded slowly. “I love Momma, too. Do you love Momma?”

Sarevok’s chest tightened. He knew that Gyoukou barely remembered Narula. The boy’s image of his mother was based on the portrait Sarevok had convinced her to sit for. You know, as much as I like the character of Narula, I've always had mixed feelings about her relationship with Sarevok. Which is all your fault, Silrana, since it was because I liked Sarevok and Anomen together so much!

But this was a really great ending for Sarevok, especially since it really brings him full circle. He just couldn't understand why Anomen would want to raise a child not his own, but now, he truly does, and I can't help but think that Anomen's example and Anomen's love helped make him capable of loving a child like that.

Great chapter.

S'aright.

Yes, he has. His priorities have shifted. No more slaughter and mayhem. :)

He suspected, but they never came out and said anything in front of him.

A key point for her was that if the baby wasn't Sarevok's, she would be free to take him somewhere else if she felt the need. But Narula knew that if Sarevok was the father, she could never take his son away from him. So now she is permanently tied to Brynnlaw.

But yes, another part of it is that she never was completely convinced that Sarevok would be that eager to raise a child that wasn't his.

BTW, I didn't know FR priests could tell who determine a child's parentage. Is that a divination spell?

There has always been an understanding that there are a lot of divine 'non-adventuring' spells and abilities. I think something like this would easily fall within a priest of Lathander's abilities, since births are very important to them. But the rulebooks would never include it, because how often do you need a spell of "Baby information" in a dungeon?

Sarevok thought for a long moment. Then he said, “There was a word that Tamoko taught me… gyoukou. It means ‘unexpected good fortune’. Something wonderful that you never thought could happen. I never imagined that the day would come when I would have a son.”

I thought it was nice. :)

*chuckles*

To be honest, Sarevok isn't looking to replace Anomen. I think the term 'friends with benefits' best describes the relationship he had with Narula.

But this was a really great ending for Sarevok, especially since it really brings him full circle. He just couldn't understand why Anomen would want to raise a child not his own, but now, he truly does, and I can't help but think that Anomen's example and Anomen's love helped make him capable of loving a child like that.

I think that is probably true. Sarevok was already on the road to changing his outlook on life, but his friendship and then love for Anomen kept him on that road. Otherwise, it would have been easy for him to fall back into his old ways of thinking.

Great chapter.

Thanks!

Understood.

But isn't that what he thought about his relationship with Anomen in the beginning? :)

(But I'm NOT complaining about the way it turned out. Not complaining a bit.)

I was just flipping through the campaign setting last night and stopped on one of the pages for regional feats and glanced at the "Magical Training" one. The description for it said that in Halura, even labourors know a few spells to ease their work, so the idea that there is a whole mass of other spells that are more... domestic, is not hard to see.

Besides, I have always imagined that Imoen would have taken advantage of any spell she could find to make chores easier.

“That one would be spending all of her time flirting with me and trying to raid our wine cellar. I’ve had complaints from the Vulgar Monkey, and you know how hard they are to shock. A priestess of Sharess is not someone I want looking after you.”

That both amuses me and makes me think "I'm glad someone noted that Sharessan presence would be on the island" - with the prominent feasthall there... it's a foregone conclusion.

The festhall made it seem like a good fit. Besides, a certain person I know's favorite FR deity is Sharess, so I had to work her in there somewhere.

Sorry it took awhile to respond here... :)

Nice chapter, Sil, although somewhat bittersweet in the end. At least Sarevok has someone to care for now, even if there will always be the reminder that Narula isn't there. And having Gyoukou ask, "Where's Momma?" won't be easy on him.

Is this the end of AC then? :) :( :D

No, there are a few more chapters left. Believe me, you'll know when it has reached the end. But the next chapter needs a bit of research to get right, so I've been digging through the sourcebooks and studying maps to make sure I've got my facts straight enough.

Soon, soon!
