I was wondering what type of party do people creat for playing these games and in the case of IWD2, are any of the pre-generated parties good.
Well, I don't tend to play so much for power gaming as for characters. In IWD1 and 2 that was pretty difficult, since your party was entirely self-created. So, with that in mind this was my Icewind Dale 1 party
1.) elven cleric/mage
2.) half-elven druid
3.) human paladin
4.) elven mage/thief
5.) human ranger
6.) half-elven fighter
For Icewind Dale 2 I rummaged through my folder of character sheets from PnP games and chose the following:
1.) half-elven fighter
2.) half-elven cleric (in my head these two were a couple)
3.) half-elven druid/ranger (detecting a theme here?)
4.) human rogue
5.) tiefling paladin (The poor confused soul...)
6.) tiefling sorcerer/bard
I never really bothered to check out the premade partied, I just created so characters and went. Admittedly, I've heard that if you form your party correctly you don't need to have all six characters, but I'm very bad at making a balanced, poweful party so I needed every one of my party members to get through the tough battles.

Know how you feel, I prefer taking characters thorough on BG and BG2 that I like instead of which ones are the best.
1.) elven cleric/mage
2.) half-elven druid
3.) human paladin
4.) elven mage/thief
5.) human ranger
6.) half-elven fighter
Sounds good

Well I haven't gotten round to playing IWD2 yet, so I can't say anything about that, but my IWD party is as follows:
1) Human Fighter
2) Half-elven Cleric
3) Human mage (non-specialist)
4) Half-elven fighter/thief
There may only be four of them, but they are a very powerful group by the time I get to the end.

Yes, I do have a thing for little people. It comes from being short.

Well, I started my IWD I party with an epic story in mind, so this is what I came up with:

I remember that story, it was very enjoyable. One of my favourites. It's a shame there aren't more Icewind Dale stories really. Do you think you will ever continue it?

I began to play IWD2 a dozen times over and only finished it once, with the following party: Shield Dwarf Fighter + Moon Elf Bard + Wild Elf Ranger + Tiefling Rogue + Aasimar Cleric (Watcher of Helm) + Drow Male Wizard (Necromancer). I actually pictured my party members bickering all through the story... Aasimar - Tiefling, Drow - Moon Elf (and Wild Elf) and a morose Dwarf on top.
As you can see, I don't multi-class. I don't like a weaker fighter and a weaker mage in the same character. I'd rather have a strong fighter and a strong mage in two characters. And so on. This way, my characters can receive fixed and specific functions. And I make it my goal to have at least half of the party members be their race's favored class.

The first one I completed the game with:
1. Human Monk
2. Half-elf Fighter
3. Dwarven Fighter
4. Elven Thief
5. Human Druid
6. Wilf-Elf Sorcerer
It had no evils in it
2 tanks, 1 late-game tank (with lay on hands which becomes nice late game), 1 thief, 1 healer, 1,5 spellcaster (I used the druid in a lot of cases for healing)
The second one I decided to powerplay using a few things.
1. (Female) Drow monk/cleric (1 lvl monk to get the + armor/wisdom bonus)
2. Human Paladin/Sorcerer (1 lvl paladin for the + saving throws/cha) Hmm I never even considered using a Wilf-Elf there, or can't they be Paladins? Regardless, I used a Human.
3. Duergar Fighter
4. (Male) Drow Mage (no specialist)
5. Orc Fighter/Barbarian, the fighter until he had access to the Grand-Mastery feat.
3 Tanks, 2 spellcasters, 1 healer. The only weakness of this group was that during the daylight most of them (3/5) had a disadvantage. With the easyer scenario's I simply ignored it, and with the harder one's I just slept until it was night again and then started the battle. I first considered taking a 6th hero, thief, but I decided that I had hardly needed the thief the first time I finished the game (picking pockets was nice, but not essential), I could force most doors, and I could always heal my high hp tanks that walked in front of the rest if they would somehow be surprised by a trap.
As I said, it was powerplaying, but hey
