What's the deal with this? I have yet to find an explanation as to who those dudes are, or *precisely* why they're trying to kill your party. Of course, I wouldn't know; a powergamer I am not.
If anyone knows -- or even suspects -- I would really, really appreciate an answer.
Thank you!

Hi! I was just playing through one final time, and I got to the point where your PC returns to Athkatla (from the Underdark) and tries to leave town...you know, the funky encounter where a bunch of travelers morph into duplicates of your party.

Well, thank y'all for your help. You did try to help me find an answer, but I reckon this'll be one of those unsolved mysteries for now...

I always figured those people to be a doppleganger (sp?) brigand and they've heard of all the quest your party has done so they plan to kill you and use your name, image, reputation, etc... to do all sorts of illegal stuff.
Not too sure tho, as i'm new to the whole D&D world.

Did it happen if you had the Flail of the Ages? it did for me.
They arent well informed: If you tell them that your not Charname of Candlekeep, they go away.

I've been wondering about this too. Bad thing is, when it happens to me in the game it glitches the game out and causes issues. After I kill them, I get a mage who teleports into every scene I do. He doesnt talk, say anything, or do much more than follow my characters around - causing all other npc conversations to fail as well.
Can you use the cheat keys to get rid of him? You might be able to Ctrl+Y him. Or perhaps Ctrl+Q followed by Ctrl+K? (Ctrl+Y kills, +Q recruits into the party, +K dumps from the party) If these cheat keys don't work then I recommend you visit the Bioware boards, more particularly Baldur's Gate II: SoA and ToB Technical Support . Ya hya chouhada!

Any number of people could have sicc'ed a set of Raskhasa on the PC... Any of the Five (not Illasera's style though), a certain Deathstalker, some random group of mages who decided the PC was too powerful and a threat, etc. etc.
