Another chapter here... soon we will be at 60!! Some fighting and suprises coming up.

Beloved Child 59

The beast crashed into the party and the melee began anew. Groder swung his axe but the blow was deflected by the Kua-Toa noble’s spear. Luckily enough it slid along the shaft and severed another Kua-Toa`s head clean off. Jaheira still dripping with water spun her staff high and clipped the noble’s face, the fish man grunted and wobbled backwards. Another smaller Kua-Toa darted past the noble and slashed at the druid’s legs with a wicked looking bone knife. The fish man was intercepted by Viconia however and the three flail heads silenced the Kua-toa forever.

A fireball roared from Nalia`s hands and flew into the passage behind the Kua-Toa blowing a wave of fire back at the fish men. The Kua-Toa noble swung its spear and shoved Jaheira into Viconia and the two women fell into one of the shallow channels. Imoen countered by conjuring an acid dripping arrow that flew at the Kua-Toa noble and when it struck it began eating at the leather armour the beast wore.

Haer`Dalis and Groder were caught up with a large Kua-Toa that quite expertly handled a javelin and net combination. The two had to duck and sidestep not to be caught in the net. A few times Haer`Dalis had to push Groder out of the nets way because although the youth was fast the axe slowed him when fighting the dexterous beast and he tiefling knew luck went only so far. After narrowly avoiding the javelin, both of them managed to flank the Kua-Toa and sunk their blades into it. The thing gurgled and sank to the floor.

Jaheira and Viconia had emerged from the channel and were engaging the last of the lesser Kua-Toa`s with a flurry of blows. It fell quickly under the combined force of the cleric and druid.

Left was now only the large Kua-Toa noble that looked neither tired nor really hurt. It held its spear out in front of it with the ease of long use. The party stood almost in a half circle before it. The Kua-Toa roared and charged them, spear spinning in its fat webbed hands. As the Kua-Toa swung the spear at them, Jaheira and Haer`Dalis blocked it with their own weapons. Groder darted forward at a low angle and slashed at the Kua-Toa`s legs. The youth managed to wound the fish man just above the knee. The Kua-Toa retaliated by hitting Groder with the butt of the spear and the youth was tossed into the shallow waters. He sat up quickly spurting and yelling about how filthy the water was.

“If you have time to complain, you have time to fight!” Viconia yelled and flung a bright stone from her hand. It graced the monsters face and tore of a long strip of flesh from it. The Kua-Toa howled and tired to charge Viconia but both Jaheira and Haer`Dalis were in its way. Imoen and Nalia had backed up and had begun firing bolts and arrows respectively. The projectiles sank themselves into the Kua-Toa noble’s chest, though they seemed to do little to impede the fish mans fighting acumen. Both druid and bard had to dodge out of the way as the Kua-Toa managed to swing its spear around.

The Kua-Toa backed towards the passageway, bleeding from gashes on its face and leg, having several arrows and bolts embedded in its chest. The things disjointed bulbous eyes rolled up and down. Then it manipulated some grooves on the large spear and the weapon clicked into several sections held together by chains. The noble began swinging the tip of the spear over his head like a morningstar.

“Sheesh, he just doesn’t give up does he?” Imoen muttered as her stone skin spell dissolved.

Haer`Dalis summoned a large glowing orb that flew at the Kua-Toa, when it slammed into the beast it coughed up a dark bubbly ichor. Then it charged again, swinging the sectioned spear in front of it. They party split up on either side of the fish man splashing into the waters and wobbling Imoen managed to shot a bolt into the Kua-Toas neck. The beast gave a strangled cry and then fell unceremoniously forward hitting the ground with a dull sound.

“Yay!” Imoen cried and did a little dance.

“Quickly get the blood.” Jaheira ordered and then she shook her head, whipping her braids around and shooting water in every direction.

Nalia was quickly by the corpse with a vial and a slightly disgusted look on her face. The redhead filled the vial full and put the cork in.

“Right, we are wet and miserable but we have the blood so let’s go back now.” Groder complained and wrung his hair.

“No one seems seriously hurt, only bruises and the danger of catching a cold.” Viconia supplemented and massaged her neck.

“Oh the irony! Heroes dying of the cold after surviving the jaws of the beast!” Haer`Dalis lamented and touched his forehead.

“Yeah, ironic…” Groder mumbled.

“Worry not, Raven! I shall keep you warm!” The tiefling exclaimed and advanced on Groder.

“Quit it!” The young bhaalspawn whined.

**

The trek back to Ust Natha was uneventful even if the majority of the party was wet and miserable. After a day of fighting and walking a strong tiredness had set upon them as well and a strange happiness came to them as they saw the gates of Ust Natha.

“First we deliver our prize to the Matron.” Viconia said as they passed the gates. “Servitude comes before changing clothes unfortunately.” She told the dismayed faces of her comrades.

Jaheira shrugged.

“Let us just get it over with.” The druid stated and took the lead together with Viconia.

When they arrived at the temple, Ardulace was there to greet them.

“You moved faster then I expected and so I assume you have the blood?” The Matron said and held out her hand. Nalia put the vial with the crimson liquid in it in Ardulace`s hand.

“Good, this seems genuine.” She nodded. “Your performance has been acceptable and for now I liberate you from your duties. What we prepare will take time and you will be called upon again. I have left a small reward for you at the tavern. ”

On that note Ardulace turned away and disappeared deeper into the temple. The party left and returned to the tavern. There they found a hefty sum of gold waiting for them with Ardulace`s compliments. After they had changed, they took a meal in the tavern proper and were joined by Solaufein and Ruzun who wanted to hear all about what had happened. Phaere was missing but even Haer`Dalis could not be bothered to care. The meal was interrupted by Istrovir and another Drow that had a foul look on his face.

“You!” Istroivir growled, pointing at Gorder and some of his scars seemed to quiver.

Groder looked calm and crossed one leg over the other as he looked at Istrovir.

“Have you come for a dictionary?” He asked with smile.

The older Drow warrior narrowed his eyes dangerously.

“We will fight in the arena you and I, you won’t be so cocky when you lie bleeding, you little shit.” Istrovir said.

“Yes, yes…” Groder waved a hand. “Just tell me when and I`ll be ready.”

The Drow warrior actually growled at this. Groder`s nonchalance seemed to make him even angrier.

“Three days…” Istrovir spat and then he and his crony left.

“I do hope you know what you are getting into…” Ruzun said and played with one of his earrings.

“Do your companions share your confidence?” Solaufein asked.

“He can be a mean bastard when he wants to.” Imoen said and winked. Then Viconia discreetly elbowed the younger woman in the side. Imoen coughed loudly. Despite getting the point, Imoen send a boot towards Viconia under the table. She ended up hitting Jaheira whom frowned and kicked resolutely back. It went on like this until everyone had been kicked and Solaufein was looking oddly at them all. For a moment there was some tension in the air before Groder spotted a familiar face by the tavern exit.

“Well, I`ll go socialize with Istorvir`s brother and see if he can tell me anything interesting.” The youth announced and took off towards Nym.

“I`ll say that it might be a good idea to see if Nym can tell him anything even if that boy is running out of time.” Ruzun remarked.

Solaufein nodded grimly but there was a brief look of distaste on his face. Imoen noticed and saw that both Viconia and Jaheira had as well but they all said nothing.

**

“Where did you go?” Nym asked nervously as the two youths headed down an alley.

“Doing more work for Despana…” Groder answered.

“I… I heard something about Mind Flayers or Beholders…” Nym went on.

Groder sighed, was nothing secret in this city? Then he smiled slightly and nodded.

“So what where did you go?” His nervous companion asked again.

“For the Kua-Toa of course, what fool would run off after Mind Flayers or Beholders…” Groder waved his hands in the air and followed Nym up a long flight of stairs. The young Drow cast a sort of admiring look at Groder before hurrying up before him.

They ended up at a very high altitude that reminded Groder of the dream were he and Lloth had struck a deal. Groder joined Nym whom was walking out on the rooftops. The two came to sit down on a roof that gave them a high position and good view of the city. For a long time they said nothing and Nym sat with his knees drawn up to his cheeks. Groder drummed with his fingers on the flat stone surface.

“So… what did you want to talk about?” Groder eventually said searching Nym`s face. The Drow youth seemed tired.

“I… ah…” The young Drow stuttered. “Shouldn’t talk…”

Groder gave him an odd look. Nym hid his face in his knees, wrapping his arms around them, sobbing.

“I`ll probably be killed soon, I am useless.” He wailed quietly and his body shook. “I’m not like you…”

Groder was taken aback and then regarded the crying youth. As he had thought before, Nym was not exactly the mental archetype of a Drow but this was surprising too. He tried to look at the face hidden by the white hair and drawn up legs. Suddenly he was overwhelmed by an idea, it had lurked in him for a long time, since Haer`Dalis. A sort of horrible glee accompanied it and Groder seizing on the idea inched closer to Nym. Reaching out and grasping it Groder turned the young Drow`s face towards him and planted a kiss on his lips.

“Mmph…” Nym tried to voice his surprise but was silenced.

The Drow youth struggled lightly before being pushed down by Groder. Blazing red eyes met each other and the fear was clear in Nym`s.

“I… we…” He ground out; his eyes still swam with tears.

“Oh…” Groder smiled a shark like smile and all but purred. “Hush now…”

**

They flitted through the alley like two shadows, silent and brooding. Nym looking his usual nervous self, Groder wearing a sort of a wry, superior smile. The young Drow began saying something but Groder waved irritably at him and he remained silent. When they stood before the tavern once again Groder spoke.

“Well, that was exciting don’t you agree?” He said glibly.

“Um…” Nym seemed unsure of what to say and simply remained silent, looking pensive.

Groder shrugged.

“We’ll talk about it after I kill your brother…” He said and left Nym standing in the street.

It's so filthy, it's strange that it even needs poisoning to kill the tadpoles.

It's too bad they couldn't just run away and then wipe blood off their armour

Methinks if you wrote 'a LOT of fighting' and 'BIG surprises', this would reflect the state of matters better.

Now that was a LONG scene... I've recently grown a distaste for fighting scenes again, don't mind me here.

Er. What's she doing? Releasing her Inner (Female) Dog? With braids, iIt won't work, and others will get wet. ;)

Nalia was quickly by the corpse with a vial and a slightly disgusted look on her face. The redhead filled the vial full and put the cork in.

...whitehead

Er. Nym is running out of time? You mean as in, 'he'll be dead soon'? 'm sorry, 'm dim today.

Solaufein nodded grimly but there was a brief look of distaste on his face. Imoen noticed and saw that both Viconia and Jaheira had as well but they all said nothing.

Distaste? Mysterious!

Oh, so he is running out of time...

“I… we…” He ground out; his eyes still swam with tears.

Oh?

That smile is... so Haer'Dalis.

Is that really your greatest concern at the time?

Ah! I swear I hadn’t been reading ahead. *hugs Viconia* :D

Yup. I often piss off other people by not caring about their angry demands and yelling.

Yeah, too bad. I figure it might be hard to wring blood out of armour.

Still a redhead without the illusion.

Yep, the weak end up dead as Lloth commands.

Vanity is one of his many flaws...

I also picked up on the whole Nym/Groder thing, though I wasn't really sure before this chapter if I was just looking too far into things, as I always seem to do. I think it's really cute - who knows, maybe Nym will have a good effect on Groder... unlikely, I know. We can always hope though.

I like surprises-that-aren't-really-surprises-but-are-more-confirmations-of-suspicions, so this chapter was nice. And I don't want to yapper on about it, but I want to be able to write fight scenes like you! :(

The beast crashed into the party and the melee began anew. Groder swung his axe but the blow was deflected by the Kua-Toa noble’s spear. Nice! :( Go Vicky!

Looks like we'll be having sushi tonight. Good fight-scenes, btw.

Spoken like a true leader. :(

“Yeah, ironic…” Groder mumbled.

“Worry not, Raven! I shall keep you warm!” The tiefling exclaimed and advanced on Groder.

“Quit it!” The young bhaalspawn whined.

“We will fight in the arena you and I, you won’t be so cocky when you lie bleeding, you little shit.” Istrovir said.

Not a dictonary he needs. It be a thesaurus. :|

“I`ll probably be killed soon, I am useless.” He wailed quietly and his body shook. “I’m not like you…”

Perhaps. He's not too too confident in a society that demands it.

“We’ll talk about it after I kill your brother…” He said and left Nym standing in the street.

Now that's a Drow goodbye if ever I've heard one! :?
