Okay, I'm not sure that anyone ever actually comes to this part of the forums. (I'm the first person to post on this one anyway! :D ) But if anyone does stop by, I have a question.

How do you kill Aec'Letec in Ulgoth's Beard? The demon(?) in the quest that involves the dagger Soultaker from Durlag's Tower. Maybe it's because I do all of those quests before going to Baldur's Gate, but I have never managed to do it without a lot of luck and being forced to reload at least three or four times. I seem to have more trouble with dear Aec'Letec than I do in the final battle with Sarevok.

So, I was just wondering how you guys tackle that thing?

Yeah, it's really about luck, mostly. You need to deal with the gaze attack or it'll chunk your party members, meaning a reload... I've heard that protection of petrification and potions of mirrored eyes that work against basilisks, also work against this guy... not 100% sure though. Anything that increases your saving throws is very good. I think the gaze effect if it gets through can be dispelled with Dispel Magic. Using lots and lots of summons can help too. I'd worry most about Aec and his gaze attack than the cultists, though... he needs to die quickly.

The gaze attack is what gets me every single time. Nearly always, without fail, it will get at least one of my poor guys. Usually the only times I do it without losing anyone is by using a lot of summoned creatures and relying on a lot of luck. I'll be going up against him again soon though, so maybe I'll try using potions of mirrored eyes and dispel magic, and see how that works out.

1. Dispel magic does remove the curse.

2. When he dies, he reincarnates in any living cultist, so you have to kill him again. That's why I always kill cultists first. (I usually start off with a wand-based fireball or two, just to soften up most of them)

3. Lots and lots and lots of summons make excellent cannon fodder.

Well, I did it. And for some reason, this time it seemed a lot easier. I don't know if it's because my party are higher than normal (levels 7 - 9), or because I'm used to fighting harder demons in BG2. I have the difficulty setting on normal too. It used the gaze attack three times, but it didn't actually affect anyone. So I just summoned a few skeletons, used fireball and ranged attacks to knock out the cultists and then had my whole party just pound it until it died.

Whole thing took less than five minutes and not a single reload.

That's a first.

Whoa, this was close to a decade ago for me! I think I vaguely sort of remember using the arrows o' dispelling on any character afflicted. It's magic that can be dispelled somehow.

I hope that helps.
