Well, another chapter up. Please enjoy!

Beloved Child 35

Refreshed and well rested the party returned to the room in which they had freed the invisible being. As they began venturing downwards into the core of the sphere, Nalia and Yoshimo again led the way. The stairway spiralled downwards into a compact darkness with only small crystals on the side of the stairs providing bleak illumination.

“Have you noticed that the entire sphere seems to move inwards in a spiral much like these stairs?” Nalia asked out loud.

“Yes.” Haer`Dalis responded first. “I wondered if anyone else noticed that. I wonder if it has any purpose.”

“It is damned dark here; I can barely see where I place my feet.” Valygars voice echoed and then a loud yell from Korgan.

“Watch where ye place yer feet, longlimb!”

“Hopefully there are no Grue here.” Haer`Dalis said. “But the again they will take you before me oh hound.”

“A what?” Jaheira asked who was walking in front of the bard.

“A Grue, they live in dark places and fear only strong light. If you are in an area where there are Grue and you have no light, you are likely to be eaten by a Grue.” Haer`Dalis narrated.

“How utterly fascinating.” Viconia said, voice dripping with sarcasm. “Do tell us if one manages to share the tiny room with us on these stairs.” Then she added. “Male, that better not be your hand!”

“It wasn’t” Groder defended. “I can barley see anything.”

Viconia swore in Drow and then chanted. Soon a powerful light appeared over her head and illuminated the stairway. It hung there alone and unsupported in the darkness.

“There.” She said.

“And why did you not cast the spell to begin with?” Jaheira asked, standing on a few steps below the Drow.

“There was some light and I assumed we might have needed it later.” The Drow responded.

As they kept venturing downwards a dome began to appear in the darkness, steel like all the others before it. As they reached the end of the stairway, an open door revealed a large room with a blue marble floor. They could see the beginnings of a corridor in the wall opposite the doorway in which they stood.

In the room spells and yells bounced of surfaces. A mage in green robes was surrounded by summoned ogres.

“Tolgerias?” Three voices said at once. One was Valygar, one was Jaheira and the last was Korgan.

The man was too busy to notice the new arrivals as two large skeletal beings carved a way through the summoned ogres with scythe like arms. A third of the skeletal beasts were chasing a redheaded mage whom dived under its swings and managed to get off a few simple spells that struck the construct harmlessly.

“What do we do?” Nalia whispered. “Those are bone golems.”

“We wait and take care of whatever is left.” Groder replied.

“I don’t know…” Jaheira began.

“What!” Groder hissed. “I don’t know how he got here but he knows we helped Valygar. I don’t think he will be pleased to see us.”

“The kid is right ye know.” Korgan said. “The mage hired me band to keep an eye on ye so to speak.”

“I figured that much.” Groder replied.

“I do agree with Groder.” Valygar said. “He sent enforcers to my home and sent you after me. It would be prudent to let our enemies fight among themselves first.”

In the room the redheaded mage had turned into an ogre and slammed its fists into the construct that had pursued it. The skeletal things head rocked a bit, remained still and then slowly turned its head towards the transformed mage. The large skull grinned horribly and began swinging at the ogre.

Meanwhile Tolgerias creatures had actually managed to overpower one of the golems and smashed it to bits. The ogres did not have time to avoid the second one however and they were all caught in a powerful swing that severed their torsos from the rest of their bodies. Tolgerias and the floor around him were showered with gore and the man slipped. The last thing he would ever see was a large skeletal foot closing fast on his head.

As the redheaded mages spell had ended, she had by some miracle managed to wrest of a leg from the golem she had fought. The thing writhed on the floor unable to get up. The mage turned and ran for the exit the party was currently standing in as the last golem turned its attention towards her.

“Alright, the golem is the first priority.” Groder said. “Haer`Dalis could you take the mage?”

“Of course My Raven.” The bard spun one of his blades.

“Hold on…” Jaheira began but Groder stormed out into the room followed by Haer`Dalis. As Viconia and Korgan passed her, Jaheria hissed:

“Damn you, child.” And charged into the room as well.

**

The golem slowed its advance and noted that new intruders had arrived. The mage’s look of fear was mixed with shock when the party charged into the room. She died with that look on her face as Haer`Dalis slashed open her throat when he passed her.

The party managed to surround the last golem and began attacking it from all sides. The golem swung at the nearest target and punched a hole in Korgans shield. It pulled back hard, the dwarf followed and then flew above the golem, landing hard on the floor behind it. Then the golem deftly used the shield to block one of Jaheiras attacks. Viconia managed to crush the joints in the golem’s bony waist with blow of her flail. The thing staggered and swung wildly, almost managing to take off Yoshimos head. The bounty hunter lost his footing and fell to the floor. It was lucky for the party for he managed to spot the golem damaged by the redheaded mage crawling towards them.

“The second one isn’t dead!” He yelled through the din of battle.

Groder spun and faced the crawling golem. The thing managed to swing one of its arms and gave Groders legs shallow cuts in one swipe. The boy fell forward on the golems head. The golem was surprised by the obstruction and began shaking its head. Jaheira sprinted over and smashed the golem’s skull repeatedly until it cracked and the construct stopped moving. Groder slid groaning to the floor.

The remaining golem with the crushed waist had managed to stomp down on Yoshimos arm. Nalia had reacted immediately and threw a lightning bolt at the golem. The golem shrugged of the magical effects but it gave Valygar enough time to deliver a crushing blow to the Golems spine. The golem crumbled without a sound.

“Viconia! See to Yoshimo and the dwarf!” Jaheira yelled.

Nalia had already run over to Yoshimo and was holding him up. The Drow set about to realign the Kara-Turans arm. Korgan coughed as he lay on the floor and then managed to get up. He went to collect his axe.

“Ha! It had been some time since I was knocked off me feet!” He bellowed.

“Wonderful for you… Ow!” Groder yelped as Jaheria was manhandling his legs.

The druid inspected the cuts that ran in a horizontal line across Groders lower legs.

“They are only shallow and will not be hard to heal.” She informed. Once more she somewhat violently grabbed one of the boy’s legs. The boy protested.

“There was no need to kill the woman.” Jaheira said and said nothing more as she fixed up Groders legs.

The boy managed to stand up on his bandaged legs and tried his feet, wobbled a bit then walked very slowly over to the rest of the group. Yoshimo was trying out his arm and found the movements where a bit stiff. The party reassembled itself and they wasted little time as the wounds that had been inflicted where not of any dire nature.
**

As they moved from the room in which they had done battle, they came into the great engine room and the great engine that gave life to the sphere. Catwalks of steel ran on several levels above, below and around a monstrous creation. Large, raw and exposed soot blackened muscles strained around great beating pistons of metal. Bulging red veins pumped and twisted around the large thing. It looked like a giant heart suspended in mid air with chimneys bellowing black and green smoke. The place reeked of strong unidentifiable smells.

“This is… this is horrid.” Nalia said with a quiver in her voice.

The catwalk they where on led directly towards the engine. It formed a platform at its end where the flesh of the thing almost spilled over on it. Several mouths opened and closed on the part that hung over the path, they gnashed their teeth and lashed with long tongues. On the platform stood a boxlike machine that had several levers, knobs and gauges.

As they made their way out onto the platform, Jaheria slowly approached the pulsing wall of flesh. She avoided the snapping mouths and put a bare hand on the warm surface. She drew it back immediately.

“This thing is blasphemous.” Valygar muttered and looked up on the thing.

“I do not think we should linger.” Viconia said and looked around with a slightly worried expression.

Nalia braced herself and looked critically at the mouths; then she went over to the machine and studied it.

“Well?” Groder asked. “Can you make anything of it?”

“I am guessing that you feed the…” She paused. “Heart.” She continued. “By feeding the mouths, only I have no idea what to give them.”

“Could we try with the dry meat that is left?” Groder suggested and looked around at the party.

“It may need something more substantial My Raven.” Haer`Dalis said. “I am guessing something magical will have to be feed to them.”

“And I am guessing that we can’t feed it items.” Jaheira supplemented and looked with distaste at the pulsing muscles.

“We could… this is going to sound bad but we could feed them the two mages.” Groder said and looked a bit apologetic for bringing it up.

There were mixed reactions ranging from the disgusted to the indifferent.

“That is actually not a bad idea.” Nalia eventually said. The party stared at her silently.

“Unless one of you can summon up a demon or something” She said crossly.

“So who goes to get the corpses?” Groder asked. They all looked at him.

“I can’t say that I think that this is the best course of action but our options seem limited.” Jaheira said.

“Asch! Fer the sake o….” Korgan grumbled and walked back towards the room in which the dead mages lay.

“Come on, My Raven.” Haer`Dalis patted Gorder on the shoulder. “They are not coming here by themselves.”

“I should have studied necromancy.” Groder sighed as he followed the tiefling and the dwarf.

Once they had dragged the bodies back into the engine room, Nalia directed them to push the corpses against the mouths. Korgan and Haer`Dalis moved Tolgerias corpse against one of the larger mouths and the tongue quickly latched on to it. Soon Tolgerias had been eaten and the body of the redheaded mage met the same fate.

“Well, that did nothing.” Valygar commented after a while.

“Power levels are still minimal; no planar travel is possible at this time. If there is a need for more power it is possible to reroute it from other sections.” A disembodied voice informed.

“Seems like the sphere likes you.” Haer`Dalis told Valygar. The ranger snorted derisively.

“So what do we do now?” Viconia asked. “Any more great plans?” She looked at Groder.

“I think we can control it from here!” Nalia shouted and waved to the box with the levers and knobs. She reached for a knob.

“Wait, child!” Jaheira called but it was too late. Nalia twisted the knob back as far as it would go. There was a distinct hum and the great heart began pulsing at different rate.

“All life support power except that which is needed for the continuation of humanoid life has been deactivated. Power levels are rising but the power for a planar jump is still insufficient.” The voice informed in its dead tone.

“See!” Nalia said triumphantly.

“Not to diminish your accomplishments, young lovely but could you be a bit more careful?” Yoshimo pleaded.

“Err... Yes, sorry. I got carried away.” Nalia blushed. Then she carefully turned another knob.

“Main controls are being powered down, planar jump coordinates are reset to last known location. Power for a planar jump is now sufficient.” The voice came back.

“That is good news.” Groder said. “So how do we start this thing?”

“It is damned dark here; I can barely see where I place my feet.” Valygars voice echoed and then a loud yell from Korgan.

Hehe... Did he step on his head?

“A Grue, they live in dark places and fear only strong light. If you are in an area where there are Grue and you have no light, you are likely to be eaten by a Grue.” Haer`Dalis narrated.

Well, I think that they have at least two persons with low-light vision (dwarf+half-elf) and Viconia has infravision. Although all that Grue stuff reminds me of the child stories ).

“We wait and take care of whatever is left.” Groder replied.

“I don’t know…” Jaheira began.

“What!” Groder hissed. “I don’t know how he got here but he knows we helped Valygar. I don’t think he will be pleased to see us.”

“I figured that much.” Groder replied.

“I do agree with Groder.” Valygar said. “He sent enforcers to my home and sent you after me. It would be prudent to let our enemies fight among themselves first.”

Good idea at last, Valygar. In game Tolgerias is kind of tough, with contingencies, spell-triggers and AoE spells.

“Alright, the golem is the first priority.” Groder said. “Haer`Dalis could you take the mage?”

“Of course My Raven.” The bard spun one of his blades.

He doesn't wish to leave witnesses or simply wants to see someone die?

“They are only shallow and will not be hard to heal.” She informed. Once more she somewhat violently grabbed one of the boy’s legs. The boy protested.

“There was no need to kill the woman.” Jaheira said and said nothing more as she fixed up Groders legs.

Interesting that only she seems to care.

As they moved from the room in which they had done battle, they came into the great engine room and the great engine that gave life to the sphere. The place reeked of strong unidentifiable smells.

Brrrr. Really. Although Xzar, perhaps, would like it.

“We could… this is going to sound bad but we could feed them the two mages.” Groder said and looked a bit apologetic for bringing it up.

There were mixed reactions ranging from the disgusted to the indifferent.

At least they won't have to explain Tolgerias' fate.

“I can’t say that I think that this is the best course of action but our options seem limited.” Jaheira said.

That precisely makes it the best course of action in given circumstances :D

“Main controls are being powered down, planar jump coordinates are reset to last known location. Power for a planar jump is now sufficient.” The voice came back.

“That is good news.” Groder said. “So how do we start this thing?”

Out of curiosity: you saved them from the trip to Abyss because it would be too tough feat for non-epic group or?

“It is damned dark here; I can barely see where I place my feet.” Valygars voice echoed and then a loud yell from Korgan.

“Watch where ye place yer feet, longlimb!”

:D I’m almost expecting Korgan to use his axe to correct the size of Valygar’s feet.

“A Grue, they live in dark places and fear only strong light. If you are in an area where there are Grue and you have no light, you are likely to be eaten by a Grue.” Haer`Dalis narrated.

It is pitch black. You are likely to be eaten by a grue.

“And why did you not cast the spell to begin with?” Jaheira asked, standing on a few steps below the Drow.

“There was some light and I assumed we might have needed it later.” The Drow responded.

There won’t be any ‘later’ once you are all devoured by a grue!

“What do we do?” Nalia whispered. “Those are bone golems.”

“We wait and take care of whatever is left.” Groder replied.

Seems like a reasonable idea. :D

Meanwhile Tolgerias creatures had actually managed to overpower one of the golems and smashed it to bits. The ogres did not have time to avoid the second one however and they were all caught in a powerful swing that severed their torsos from the rest of their bodies. He will not be missed.

“Alright, the golem is the first priority.” Groder said. “Haer`Dalis could you take the mage?”

Would the mage also see them as enemy now that Tolgerias is gone? Is she also aware of the deals she made with Korgan and the others?

The remaining golem with the crushed waist had managed to stomp down on Yoshimos arm. Nalia had reacted immediately and threw a lightning bolt at the golem. The golem shrugged of the magical effects but it gave Valygar enough time to deliver a crushing blow to the Golems spine. The golem crumbled without a sound.

Very yucky, isn’t it? :D

“We could… this is going to sound bad but we could feed them the two mages.” Groder said and looked a bit apologetic for bringing it up.

Saves the funeral expenses…

“Asch! Fer the sake o….” Korgan grumbled and walked back towards the room in which the dead mages lay.

See, Korgan is useful for a lot of things that the rest of you are too squeamish to do yourselves.

“Power levels are still minimal; no planar travel is possible at this time. If there is a need for more power it is possible to reroute it from other sections.” A disembodied voice informed.

It said ‘still insufficient’. ;)

“Main controls are being powered down, planar jump coordinates are reset to last known location. Power for a planar jump is now sufficient.” The voice came back.

Oh, okay. That’s better then.

She can probably see quite a bit better than the rest of them anyway.

Ew.

“This thing is blasphemous.” Valygar muttered and looked up on the thing.

Against what exactly? I am sure there is at least one deity in Faerun who approves of such things...

“Well?” Groder asked. “Can you make anything of it?”

Groder: Can it make money?

“We could… this is going to sound bad but we could feed them the two mages.” Groder said and looked a bit apologetic for bringing it up.

Yum!

“Main controls are being powered down, planar jump coordinates are reset to last known location. Power for a planar jump is now sufficient.” The voice came back.

“That is good news.” Groder said. “So how do we start this thing?”

Turn the controls back on?

Well, another chapter up. Please enjoy!

Did.

“It wasn’t” Groder defended. “I can barley see anything.”

Do I want to know what that was?
Perhaps not. :D

“There was some light and I assumed we might have needed it later.” The Drow responded.

Easy for you to say, Viconia... (This whole being-lost-in-the-darkness part is priceless, though. They are like little children...)

A long, long, long, and great battle scene. Nothing to add beyond that I loved it, I'm afraid.

So, instead, how about a small punctuation tip? ;) In English, you put an apostrophe between a person's name and the "s" in the possessive case. Like this: across Groder's lower legs.

“This is… this is horrid.” Nalia said with a quiver in her voice.

No, Nalia, this is cool.

“This thing is blasphemous.” Valygar muttered and looked up on the thing.

Horrid, wicked, terrible magic, Valygar... (But I really don't know if he's allowed to say 'blasphemous', considering how he's an atheist. ;))

“That is actually not a bad idea.” Nalia eventually said. The party stared at her silently.

:D Ah. It's a sign of a growing-up Nalia? In five minutes from "this is horrid" to "let's feed human bodies to this thing and see what happens"? :D

“Not to diminish your accomplishments, young lovely but could you be a bit more careful?” Yoshimo pleaded.

"Young lovely"? Oh, Nalia is going to feel this... :D

“That is good news.” Groder said. “So how do we start this thing?”

Push the Big Red Button, of course!

Great chapter! Even Korgan was not a complete abomination.

He still deserves to die, though.

“It is damned dark here; I can barely see where I place my feet.” Valygars voice echoed and then a loud yell from Korgan.

Hehe... Did he step on his head?

Heh... He just stepped on Korgans heels.

I forgot that they could see in the dark...

Grue is a creature from an old text adventure called Zork. If you where in a dark area and had no light, you would be eaten.

“We wait and take care of whatever is left.” Groder replied.

“I don’t know…” Jaheira began.

“What!” Groder hissed. “I don’t know how he got here but he knows we helped Valygar. I don’t think he will be pleased to see us.”

Yep, It is never fun when he casts horrid wilting.

He doesn't wish to leave witnesses or simply wants to see someone die?

He just classified them all as enemies.

“They are only shallow and will not be hard to heal.” She informed. Once more she somewhat violently grabbed one of the boy’s legs. The boy protested.

Well, Nalia too but I missed her...

Well, you usually don`t have to do that anyways. The Cowlies will just assume that he has gone AWOL.

That precisely makes it the best course of action in given circumstances :D

Light lantern

I don`t know how to do that

Accept my commands damn you!!!!

Ah... Text adventures...

They where just going to rot in the sphere anyways. It just stays there after you are done so I assume no one ever got back in.

“Asch! Fer the sake o….” Korgan grumbled and walked back towards the room in which the dead mages lay.

See, Korgan is useful for a lot of things that the rest of you are too squeamish to do yourselves.

Ah yes, He is a garbage man.

“Power levels are still minimal; no planar travel is possible at this time. If there is a need for more power it is possible to reroute it from other sections.” A disembodied voice informed.

Well, the shpere got a tiny power boost from eating the mages.

Yep, on a bright note soon Valygar and Korgan will be long gone.

Yes, very Ew...

“This thing is blasphemous.” Valygar muttered and looked up on the thing.

Against what exactly? I am sure there is at least one deity in Faerun who approves of such things...

Against nature! He is a ranger after all.

“Well?” Groder asked. “Can you make anything of it?”

Groder: Can it make money?

Groder: I should have thought of that!

“We could… this is going to sound bad but we could feed them the two mages.” Groder said and looked a bit apologetic for bringing it up.

Yum!

The hungry mouths agree!

“Main controls are being powered down, planar jump coordinates are reset to last known location. Power for a planar jump is now sufficient.” The voice came back.

“That is good news.” Groder said. “So how do we start this thing?”

Turn the controls back on?

Heh, that would be a good start.

Well, another chapter up. Please enjoy!

Did. :D

Good! ;)

“It wasn’t” Groder defended. “I can barley see anything.”

Do I want to know what that was?
Perhaps not. :D

It was his hand.

“There was some light and I assumed we might have needed it later.” The Drow responded.

Easy for you to say, Viconia... (This whole being-lost-in-the-darkness part is priceless, though. They are like little children... :P)

I kind of forgot that Viconia can see in the dark...

Like little children eh? Maybe they sould tie a rope between themselves. I saw that once in Austria. A kindergarden class was out walking and they where tired to each other with this thick rope, it looked really weird.

A long, long, long, and great battle scene. Nothing to add beyond that I loved it, I'm afraid.

Thank you! :)

So, instead, how about a small punctuation tip? :P In English, you put an apostrophe between a person's name and the "s" in the possessive case. Like this: across Groder's lower legs.

Yeah, I kind of know that... I just forget to do it. :D

“This is… this is horrid.” Nalia said with a quiver in her voice.

No, Nalia, this is cool. :D

I was going to give her a "wow" line first. ;)

“This thing is blasphemous.” Valygar muttered and looked up on the thing.

Horrid, wicked, terrible magic, Valygar... (But I really don't know if he's allowed to say 'blasphemous', considering how he's an atheist. :P)

It is an expression so I feel it`s ok. ;)

“That is actually not a bad idea.” Nalia eventually said. The party stared at her silently.

:D Ah. It's a sign of a growing-up Nalia? In five minutes from "this is horrid" to "let's feed human bodies to this thing and see what happens"?

Her curiosity defeated the “eww” feelings.

“Not to diminish your accomplishments, young lovely but could you be a bit more careful?” Yoshimo pleaded.

"Young lovely"? Oh, Nalia is going to feel this... :D

Yes, she is. She will be hurt before this is over.

“That is good news.” Groder said. “So how do we start this thing?”

Push the Big Red Button, of course!

Great chapter! Even Korgan was not a complete abomination.

He still deserves to die, though.

 Thanks for the comments as usual. You won`t have to suffer Korgan much longer.

Will do!

“A Grue, they live in dark places and fear only strong light. If you are in an area where there are Grue and you have no light, you are likely to be eaten by a Grue.” Haer`Dalis narrated.

Hmm... Are these Grue related to the Wendersnaven in any way?

“How utterly fascinating.” Viconia said, voice dripping with sarcasm. “Do tell us if one manages to share the tiny room with us on these stairs.” Then she added. “Male, that better not be your hand!”

I wish it was mine. ;)

Too bad miss out on all that XP, though.

Oh, I can see Viconia reacting well to those orders.

“This thing is blasphemous.” Valygar muttered and looked up on the thing.

Organic engine. Pretty clever.

“It may need something more substantial My Raven.” Haer`Dalis said. “I am guessing something magical will have to be feed to them.”

And afterwards, add some anti-acids.

I think they do need to find an alternative power source. The engine is such a resource hog. It must be running on Windows Vista. ;)

“That is good news.” Groder said. “So how do we start this thing?”

Kick it? ;)

Well, the Grue are more likely to eat you anyways.

Many of us do.

Yeah... but they won`t notcie it :D

With lot`s of swearing and grumbling I wager.

Juts popped into my head.

Yeah, Lavok just skipped on the dual-core processor and the extra stick of ram.

“That is good news.” Groder said. “So how do we start this thing?”

Kick it? :P

That could be a version of heart massage. Maybe they should try. :P
