The Battle Horrors were formidable, and terrible. Adrian and his troupe had fought various strains of the constructs before, these empty suits of armor with their flaming swords.

But Adrian and his party had grown in power since then. They had faced dragons, demons, beholders, and other horrors too numerous to mention.

Abotu such a simple, typical threat, they had almost blase.

Chop, hammer, slash, kick.

Tree leapt skywards in the tall featurless white arched hallway, and came down....her quarterstaff reduced a Battle Horror to shattered fragments with one strike.

Viconia's Rakshassa flail wrapped itself around a Battle Horror. She pulled almost without effort, sneering, and ripped it in half.

Imoen was not smiling as she simply reached out and touched one of the horrors. It froze. Adrian finished it off.

We aren't really people anymore, Adrian thought distantly. We're becoming beings of legend. Powers. Bhaalspawn of the first order. This was not arrogance or pride or megalomania; it was simply an observation. And that was frightening in and of itself. We are becoming what Sarevok wanted to become.

Anomen hammered another one down. Almost as an afterthought, Edwin summoned a Planetar, and that was that.

"Goodnight," Edwin said to the shattered pieces, and they moved on.

They had reached a point in their powers for which it required someone of Irenicus' power level to truly threaten them.

But the siblings knew the Bhaalspawn War was coming, closer and closer each day....and that threats of their power level would be available in plenty.

Now they faced Dopplegangers other than Frennendan. And they finally understood whatn Frennendan had meant.

Here, the shapechangers divested themselves of any illusory form, and stood revealed. Each wore some sort of simple identifying mark or garb, and their eyes were glazed over with an inner white glow; the power of this place.

But even Frennendan was puzzled; for the Dopplegangers fought eachother as well as the party.

Some had purple bandannas tied around their arms; others had orange bandannas tied around their heads; the orange fabric written with hateful chracters in black.

"What is this?" Frennendan asked aloud. "A civil war amidst the ivory halls? I can hardly beleive it. And which faction took the Gnome?"

"We'll have to carve through them to find out," Adrian said with grim indifference.

"Perhaps not," said Frennendan thoughtfully, and closed his large dark eyes. His mind screamed out to the Shapeshifters.

The orange-band mirrorkin turned to attack him. The purple-band held back and looked curiously.....
The road to the abyss may be paved with good intentions, but it is those with bad intentions that race down that road as fast as they can.
