The black shirted villains were fading away, literally, vanishing before their eyes.

"Like a low-tech film dissolve," Gar said. He sounded equal parts amazed and annoyed.

"Jon," Tara said into the communicator. "Is that a teleport?"

"Not exactly. More like a transdimensional jump."

"As in, from another timeline?"

"Possibly."

She froze. "Ours?"

"Unlikely. As time goes on travel from our own timeline to this one will become more and more difficult, as the events of the two realities diverge further and further. And in any case, that would be a one way trip."

Tara nodded, she had long since known--as had the others--that there was no way back. And she was happy here, give or take. But she was curious to see how their world would eventually turn out, free of Lord Chaos. "Can you track them?"

"Trying, but bridging dimensions is not my strong suit."

"Gather what data you can. We'll have to report it to Checkmate."

"Right."

They roused Dagon and Killowat. Tara peered at the orange crystal in her hand. "Is this thing safe?"

"Now that nobody is trying to explot it's energy, yes. You wouldn't want to hold on to it for too long, but we should be fine for the trip back to headquarters."

Tara nodded and put it one of the pockets of her jacket.

----

The four black shirted enforcers awoke....Somewhere Else.

"You have failed me," a voice said. "Those Checkmate Titans have taken the crystal. I must start anew."

"Master, please--" one of them began, then began to scream as he and his fellows were enveloped in brilliant purple energy. When it faded, all four of them were gone.

"Lazarium was a fool," the voice muttered to itself. "But I find his energies very useful, very useful indeed."

Sighing, the owner of the voice once again turned it's attentions to the multiverse, seeking new recruits.

----

Tara handed the bit of crystal over to Checkmate Operative DeGoss, the same smirking man who had woken her this morning.

"Well done," he said smoothly. "Prestor Jon has already uploaded the tracking data to our computers. We'll find these dimension-hoppers, and deal with them."

"Good. There still the matter of Intergang's presence being so widespread," Terra pointed out.

"That is duly noted. But then, you were able to bring the base leaders in. They will be questioned."

Terra nodded. "I do think Brion should be informed," she said carefully. "Since they were so close to the Markovian border."

"The Prince shall be notified. I suspect the Outsiders will look into it. And of course, we will continue our own investigations."

----

Changeling stood in the doorway.

"I don't suppose I could ask you to stay," Terra said softly.

Gar shook his head. "The Titans are expecting me back, and we still need to fight....the thing pretending to be Raven."

"Call us if you need help with that," Tara said. "Remember, Mirage wants a peice of em too."

"And I remember why," Gar agreed. He paused. "I am going back. But....that doesn't mean I might not be able to help you guys again sometime."

"Mirage still won't be up and about for a while yet," Tara said, knowing even as she said it she was pushing her luck too far.

But Gar simply shook his head. "We'll have to send you someone else to help, then. But like I said....I might come back....sometime."

"I'd like that," Tara said softly.

He looked at her. His eyes were wide; haunted by the knowledge of her predecessor, and fearing to trust her.

She didn't know what to say to that look, so she simply shrugged helplessly. What can I do, Gar? You seem to forget that I'm the one that has to see her face in the mirror every day. But she did not say that aloud.

Finally he said. "See you.....later."

"Later," she agreed, and offered a hand to shake.

He didn't take it, but he did touch her hand....softly. Gently. Just for a moment.

Then he turned and walked away, and the door slid shut.

She leaned her head against it and blew out a sigh. Foot in the door. I've got a foot in the door. Perhaps...one day....

She turned to rejoin the others.

----

Gar returned to Dayton Manor, where the Titans were hanging out until the new HQ in New Jersey was finished being built. Even the regular Titans had to operate under the ageis of government intervention now. They were not pawns like the Teamers were, but they still had to do the occasional....favor...for various Government agencies. He didn't like it much.

Their contact, Sarge Steel, was waiting for him at the door. "Ah, good. Checkmate told me you'd be back. Someone wants to ask a favor of the group.

Gar went inside and joined the others. Nightwing acknowledged him with a weary nod.

Gar blinked as he saw who was sitting in the living room, surrounded by the Titans. "You?"

Slade Wilson looked older and more weary than Gar had ever seen him. Beside him sat a girl with white hair. She looked anywhere but at the man.

"I'm afraid.....I have to ask for your help..." Deathstroke said.

END OF THE BEGINNING
The road to the abyss may be paved with good intentions, but it is those with bad intentions that race down that road as fast as they can.

I'm sure he saw plenty of those while watching reruns of that show he was on as a kid. :P

Hmmm. No idea at all, who this is.

Yay, Nightwing!

Yay, Roy!

Yay, Grace!

Actually this is more the Felix Faust/Geo-Force/Looker era Outsiders, that were being published about the same time as when this story takes place. I do intend to eventually include Grace, though. Roy is still a Checkmate agent at this point.

Oh yes.....we're gonna step away form this story for the moment, though, and do other things. Expect the next Team Titans arc--which will include Rose, natch--in the new year.

I figured, but I'm only familiar with the current roster, so... :D

And Roy's quickly become one of my favorites. So much so that I've got him as one of my characters in this online browser-based game I've been playing.
