Adrian was fit and healthy. He had to be, given his profession. But long sprints were not his forte. Jan was setting a killer pace, scurrying along. By the time they reached the slums, Adrian had a stich burning in his side.

Jan followed Beloo up the steps of a round building not even a block away from the Copper Coronet. Slowing to an exhausted limping stagger, the others followed them inside.

Jan was having hurried, nervous pleasantries with a gnomish woman who was presumably his mother. To tiny gnome children had been dancing around him, but ran for cover when Adrian burst in.

Jan's mother looked alarmed at the big warrior, but relaxed when Adrian merely bent almsto double over his knees. "All right, Jan," he wheezed almost painfully. "Who's....this Lissa....and why did wehave to...run all the way to...met her?"

"These are the ones you've been hanging around with, Jan?" His mother pursed her lips. "I can't say it's an improvement over turnip sales."

Anomen opened his mouth to protest, but Tree shook her head.

"Mother, what has happened to Lissa? Did he hurt her?" Jan's normal fatuous mood had not returned; he was still pale.

"She's as fine as any mother can be in her situation. It's her baby that's sick. Terribly sick. Go on up."

Jan nodded slowly. Then, with an effort, he turned to the party. "Please, come with me."

They followed him upstairs into a similar round room, the stench of turnips everywhere. a younger gnome woman with ruby red hair and colorful cheeks was sitting on the bed next to a tiny bundle.

"Jan!" she got to her feet. "Jan I....."

He just hugged her. "Tell me what happened. I can't beleive that Vaelag didn't have something to do with this."

"I don't know. She just fell ill yesterday. Vaelag was angry about it, but he didn't....do anything."

"This time," said Jan in a toneless voice. "Yes, he's not afraid to bruise your face, I remember."

There was an intake of shocked breath. Jan didn't look around. But Adrian turned and looked, and saw it had been Anomen. It wasn't just surprise. There was recognition in the Helmite's eyes.

Jan bent over the baby for a few minutes, then turned to Adrian. I need to ask a favor of you. Go down to the basement, please, and talk to Uncle Gerhardt. He can be rather eccenctric..."
The road to the abyss may be paved with good intentions, but it is those with bad intentions that race down that road as fast as they can.

For some reason, I found the image of a wheezing Adrian very funny!

He just hugged her. "Tell me what happened. I can't beleive that Vaelag didn't have something to do with this."

Neither can I.

He was abused in your story too, wasn't he? Poor Ano.
Rogues do it from behind.

Hee! I loved this, Adrian worn out by chasing a gnome.

Poor Anomen. Yes, Ano, there are other men besides your father who treat their families badly.
