The Early Years: Studies

Alric sat at the desk in his room. He had various scrolls spread across the table.

He had been back in his own room, studying, for around an hour now and was completely engrossed in his book of ‘basic magical concepts’ when he heard a knock at the door. He looked up from his desk and saw Gorion entering his room.

“I believe now is a good time for that lesson I promised you earlier.” Gorion spoke in a gentle voice. “Here, I have something for you.” He said as he handed over two scrolls and a book made of black leather.

Alric opened the book and flicked through a few of the pages, mostly they were blank but one or two near the start had some magical writings and arcane markings on them.

“This is a spellbook.” Alric said as realisation dawned on him. “Do you think am I ready for my own spellbook?” He asked.

Gorion smiled. “Yes, I believe you are ready to begin the next stage of your studies.”

“What do you mean father?”

“I believe that you may be ready to cast your first real spell.”

“But doesn’t that require me to memorize a spell first.”

“Normally yes but in this case you will you will be attempting to discover the secrets of this magical item by casting a spell from this scroll

“Alright. If you believe I can do it

Gorion handed two scrolls to Alric. He recognised one of them as an identify scroll, similar to one he had studied before, however, he could not understand the writing on the second one.

“Lay the item to be identified. In this case the second scroll somewhere where you can focus on it without interruptions. Your desk will suffice here.” Gorion instructed. “Then carefully follow the instructions on the scroll of identify, keeping your thoughts focused on the second scroll.”
Alric nodded to show that he understood his foster father’s instructions. He moved towards his desk and placed the second scroll on it gently. He then turned his gaze to the identification scroll in his other hand.

At first the strange arcane markings and words meant nothing to him but by focusing on the words as Gorion had taught he was able to understand them. He began to slowly incant the words on the scroll, taking his time so that he didn’t misread.

As he read the last words off the scroll he felt the weave around him take shape, then suddenly everything was back as it once was.

“Nothing happened.” Alric said rather disappointedly.

“Are you sure?” Gorion asked in response.

Alric looked down at the scroll and blinked in shock, the writings on the scroll hadn’t changed but he could now understand them.

“Can you tell me what that scroll does Alric?” Gorion asked calmly.

Alric studied it for a few moments. “Yes.” He said after a short time. “It grants the caster immunity to fire, both natural and magical.”

“Well done.” Gorion congratulated him. “However, that was only your first lesson.”

“My first lesson?” Alric asked.

“I now want you to scribe some scrolls into your new spellbook. Here these three scrolls will do.” Gorion said as he handed over another three scrolls to Alric.

Alric studied the scrolls a moment. “Father? I thought that you did not wish for me to study offensive magic at this stage?” He asked curiously.

“I believe that you are responsible enough to be trusted with a scroll of chromatic orb and a scroll of sleep.” Gorion responded, smiling at his adopted son. “Are you willing to try to scribing those scrolls?”

“Yes father, I will try.”

“I knew you would.” Gorion replied. “I will now instruct you in the method of scribing scrolls into your spell book.” Gorion said.

Alric listened closely as Gorion explained the process of scroll scribing. He struggled to contain his growing excitement at the thought of having his own spellbook soon. He brought his mind back to his present situation and listened closely to Gorion’s words.

Shalom,
It is nice to see another chapter of the 'Earlier Years'.

“I believe now is a good time for that lesson I promised you earlier.” Gorion spoke in a gentle voice. “Here, I have something for you.” He said as he handed over two scrolls and a book made of black leather.

I cannot help but contrast this with the 'lessons' taught by Irenicus. Gorion was always so gentle to the PC.

Gorion smiled. “Yes, I believe you are ready to begin the next stage of your studies.”

Very nice.

“I believe that you may be ready to cast your first real spell.”

Plenty of times I have wondered what the first spell cast by the PC was.

'second scroll somewhere' - strange grammar. Are you sure it is correct?

Alric looked down at the scroll and blinked in shock, the writings on the scroll hadn’t changed but he could now understand them.

Nice going, Alric.

Alric studied it for a few moments. “Yes.” He said after a short time. “It grants the caster immunity to fire, both natural and magical.”

That is very useful. No wonder he did not recognise the scroll directly. It takes a considerable amount of lore (25, I believe), so a beginner PC is unlikely to have that much.

“I now want you to scribe some scrolls into your new spellbook. Here these three scrolls will do.” Gorion said as he handed over another three scrolls to Alric.

Three scrolls is plenty to begin with.

“Yes Gorion I will try.”

An affectionate PC is unlikely to call Gorion by name. You may wish to replace this by something that is more respectful.

Very nice chapter. Hope you will write more.
Regards,
Maidros

Thanks for the advice and comments Maidros.

I wasn't sure how people would react to this chapter. I personally thought that it might drag a little, I shall make the alterations you suggested.

Thanks again:)

Ah, I see he was studious, and he seems devoted to magic already.

Good way of teaching, I think.
