The masked warrior followed the mage through the trees until his knees ached. Certainly he was more hale than the frail old wizard, but the wizard knew he was hunting him, and his speed was born of survival. If there was any consolation, he seemed to be running at random, away from his intended target of the haunted tower. Indeed, if he continued on his current path, he'd wind up in the open grassland plains that stretched for several miles in the middle of the forest.

He hoped that the old man would drop dead of exhaustion, but in that world it happened far less often than in others, though he did not know that. But he did know that evil always found a way to survive.

--------

Chup and Laertya found the going getting harder, more weedy and brambly. Not that they couldn't manage; but they were going more slowly now, more carefully.

They had also noticed something.

"Someone's been following us since town, I think," Laertya murmured in an amused voice.

"Yes, I've been hearing the rattle of chain mail for a couple hours now," Chup agreed. "A survivor of the battle, perhaps?"

"I don't think one of those would have waited for us to show, and you said youself you thought we'd been followed since we left town. The questions are by whom and why?"

"Shall we confront whoever it is?"

"Not yet. Let them reveal themselves."

--------

The wizard had not yet reached the plain, but he was close. But there were those on the plain would be no help to him, without his entourage to protect him.

A tribe of Halflings were continuing their seasonal migration towards the trees. One of their fiercest warriors was named Red Wind, and their proudest Shaman was Purple Sky. These two marched at the front of the group, each lost in their own thoughts.

But eventually Purple Sky spoke. "The tower down south is troubled, we have felt the spirits stir."

Red Wind shivered. "I cannot fight spirits." He was always courageous in battle, but he knew no way to fight the unseen, rare as they were.

"Any battle can be fought and won, if one has the proper weapons," Purple Sky said, quoting the lore of their people.

Red Wind only sighed.

"We will camp here tonight," Purple Sky abruptly. "Great things are afoot."

"You've had a vision?"

Purple Sky frowned. "More of a feeling."

Red Wind was puzzled, but said no more. He had learned to trust the Shaman's feelings.

This story has started nicely, yes.
Old necromancers running around Halfling campsites...
This could really get intresting...

But
Dare i say, that you realease it in somewhat short chapters?
It´s like eating a huge amount of soup with a miniature spoon.

Well hey, if it'll get more people to respond, I'll try to expand the size of the chapters. Cuz even I don't know how big this "bowl of soup" is, but I know it's huge.

Shalom,
Nice to see a new chapter of 'Walk in the Light'.

'born of survival' - should it not be 'born of the necessity of survival' or 'born of desperation'?

Ah! How true that men do not realise that panic is so counterproductive. A nice setting for both the hunter and the hunted.

He hoped that the old man would drop dead of exhaustion, but in that world it happened far less often than in others, though he did not know that. But he did know that evil always found a way to survive.

If the old man indeed did drop dead of exhaustion, it would solve a few problems for the hunter.

It is perfectly true that evil always finds a way to survive.

Chup and Laertya found the going getting harder, more weedy and brambly. Not that they couldn't manage; but they were going more slowly now, more carefully.

Perhaps the going slow is not bad, if it induces them to be careful.

They had also noticed something.

"Yes, I've been hearing the rattle of chain mail for a couple hours now," Chup agreed. "A survivor of the battle, perhaps?"

If someone were following me, I would be inclined to attempt to trap the follower.

"Not yet. Let them reveal themselves."

Very brave.

The wizard had not yet reached the plain, but he was close. But there were those on the plain would be no help to him, without his entourage to protect him.

'on the plain would be' - it is better if it is 'on the plain that would be', I think.

A tribe of Halflings were continuing their seasonal migration towards the trees. One of their fiercest warriors was named Red Wind, and their proudest Shaman and Purple Sky. These two marched at the front of the group, each lost in their own thoughts.

Are the Shaman and 'Purple Sky' different people?

But eventually Violet Sky spoke. "The tower down south is troubled, we have felt the spirits stir."

Again are Violet Sky and Purple Sky different?

"Any battle can be fought and won, if one has the proper weapons," Violet Sky said, quoting the lore of their people.

Very profoundly true.

"We will camp here tonight," Violet Sky abruptly. "Great things are afoot."

"You've had a vision?"

Violet Sky frowned. "More of a feeling."

Red Wind was puzzled, but said no more. He had learned to trust the Shaman's feelings.

That kind of feeling is very useful - it is a great thing to have. I wish I had that extrasensory perception.
Very good chapter.

Shalom,
Nice to see a new chapter of 'Walk in the Light'.

Nice to see people reading it!!

Again are Violet Sky and Purple Sky different?

Sorry, fixed it. It's all Purple Sky now, and he is the shaman.
