hmm, this is a long one, but I really didn't want to split it up. this is partially another view of last chapter, but there's also some new info, including someone we'll be seeing more of, an old friend :D
enjoy!

Jaheira leaned her head against Valygar’s chest. “It has been so long since I let anyone close,” she mused quietly. The ranger stroked her hair as they reclined on one of the couches of the Corthala estate. “So much time spent bottled up to myself,” she mourned. “I think I had forgotten the joy of living.”

“And I think I had never known before now,” Valygar smiled.

Jaheira returned the grin and sat up next to him. “What shall we tell the others?”

“You mean Tybalt?” Valygar kissed the top of her head. “Let him do his worst. I’m willing to defend you.” He felt Jaheira stiffen. “What’s wrong?”

“Please,” she whispered, “do not force a fight.”

“I was kidding, Jaheira-”

“I know, but if either of you were hurt, I don’t know what I’d do.”

The ranger glanced at her. “You don’t still have feelings for him, do you?”

She hugged him reassuringly. “A little early to be jealous, isn’t it?” she asked mischievously. “That normally takes a few weeks, at least. Or is my roving eye as fast as the bard’s?” She laughed.

Valygar relaxed. He was being foolish. “I’m sorry,” he said. “I’m a little rusty with the whole romance thing. It’s been a while since I’ve been with a woman.”

Jaheira arched an eyebrow. “How very forward of you. What makes you think you are ready to bed me?”

The ranger blushed. “I didn’t mean…”

She poked him playfully in the side. “Of course, that doesn’t mean I can’t do other things with you right now,” she whispered.

They left the manor before dark in order to leave the streets before street gangs took over. The Corthala residence was in a poorer section of the city and as such farther from city patrols.

“Valygar,” Jaheira said as they neared the Five Flagons. “I think we need more help. I can’t do more than I already am for Tybalt.” The ranger knew such an admission must have hurt her deeply, even more so to say this out loud.

“What do you have in mind?”

“I know of a Druid Grove somewhere nearby,” she said. “Maybe I could convince one of the elder druids there to see if he can heal the worst of Irenicus’ tortures. I know this would mean loosing more time on finding Imoen,” she took a deep breath and stared at Valygar in fear, “but what if she is already gone? She has been with Irenicus for weeks; Tybalt is degenerating without any help, I can’t help but wonder whether Imoen is strong enough to resist that monster. Wouldn’t it be better to save one of them than neither?” She shook with the effort of discussing these momentous thoughts.

Valygar hugged her with all his might. She was trying so hard to do the right thing, yet she believed herself a failure in all departments. He would be there to support her and encourage her. “You are doing more than anyone could hope,” he whispered into her hair. “You are a far better friend than most people I’ve met. We will not loose Tybalt, and we will find Imoen and heal her, if need be. You cannot blame yourself for what has happened; they must take responsibility for their own lives and forge their own destinies.”

The druid thanked him with a glance. “I know you are right, but in my heart, it still pains me to see those children in such pain.”

“All children grow up, someday,” Jaheira,” Valygar reminded her. “Maybe it’s time you let them.”

Jaheira smiled wryly. “I do treat Tybalt like a child, don’t I? I don’t mean to, but he can be so immature at times!” She was faced with a mix of frustration with herself and for her former ward. “And I do nothing but encourage it with my attitude,” she acknowledged ruefully. I must let Tybalt do as he will without interfering. Thank you, Valygar, you have been a great help.”

The ranger grinned amusedly at her independent conclusion, but accepted the thanks. “I’m here to help,” he stated simply. Thinking of what she said before, he ventured a question. “Do you still want to go to the Druid Grove?”

She nodded her head. “I can have this last bit of meddling, can I not? It is in Tybalt’s best interests to go there; even if there is nothing to heal, he may learn more of his nature, and how to control it.”

“I agree,” he replied. “But don’t react poorly if he doesn’t agree with your plan.”

She squeezed his hand. “I will try not to.”

They entered the inn and immediately saw Tybalt sitting with Haer’Dalis and Yoshimo. They joined them and ordered a meal.

“Good to see you back, Jaheira,” Tybalt said flippantly. “Decided not to abandon me yet, eh?”

She took a calming breath before explaining the chance to redeem herself in the eyes of the Harpers.

Tybalt was momentarily sobered, his face solemn. “I’m sorry,” he said quietly, “that I’ve dragged you into this. I didn’t realize that this had become a vendetta between you and the Harpers. If…if you want to leave so this is fixed, I won’t stop you.”

Jaheira looked at him in surprise. “Tybalt. You and I know that we are right! Galvarey had no right to put you on trial like that, and we acted in self-defense. If the Harpers can’t see that…then, I don’t wish to associate with their ilk any more.”

“Jaheira,” Valygar said warningly. “Think this through. This was one incident, there must be another way of dealing with this.”

“No,” she stated firmly. “I have slain Harpers; that enough is punishable by death. That my old mentor, Dermin, is involved in this means that the source of corruption runs deep. I have no desire to be a part of that corruption.”

Tybalt looked desperate as he spoke. “Don’t do this, Jaheira. I can’t have you throw away your life for me. Too much pain has already trailed in my wake, I don’t want you to be the next casualty.”

Jaheira gratefully laid a hand on his. “Thank you, Tybalt, but I can make my own choice in this, and my mind is made up. You have no guilt in this matter.”

She looked at Valygar and raised her eyebrows in question. He nodded, and she explained her idea of visiting the Druid Grove to see if they had any insight on Tybalt’s condition.

The Bhaalspawn thought this over carefully, then to everyone’s surprise, agreed. “If the Druid Council could help me like you hope, then why not try? They’re not going to try to imprison me or kill me if they can’t help, will they?” He asked this only half-joking.

“No, they will not,” Jaheira said in some relief. “Thank you for listening to me, Tybalt. I know I can be harsh sometimes, but I do care greatly about you and your safety. I only do what I think is best for you.” Her hand lingered on his cheek as she smiled gently at him.

“Jaheira and I are together,” Valygar said abruptly.

“What?” Tybalt roared.

“Valygar!” Jaheira scolded.

“So the bud of romance fully blooms,” Haer’Dalis laughed.

“Is this true, Jaheira?” Tybalt demanded. “What about Khalid? What about-?” He didn’t know what else to say; there was nothing to stop her from enjoying life again. Still, this came as a shock, and a tiny burst of jealousy coursed through him.

“Khalid is gone,” the druid asserted quietly. “I do not think he would wish me to live in his shadow forever. I have had time to mourn his death and think on the future. I do not want to be alone all my life.”

“You have me, you have us!” Tybalt exclaimed, gesturing to the rest of the group.

“She wants something more than that,” Valygar explained tersely. “What is the problem in that?”

“So the mourning ptarmigan has found her dark hawk at last,” Haer’Dalis said. “This groups breeds romance, I see.”

“What do you mean?” Valygar asked suspiciously. He had seen the glances passed between the bard and Jaheira’s ward.

“Why, not ten minutes before you arrived, I had gone to check on our missing comrades. They had performed a ritual, I am told, to restore the flightless dwarf into a bitter jackdaw. The ritual must have been successful, for when I entered, they were in the midst of…celebrating.”

“All three of them?” Tybalt said incredulously. “Are we talking about the same people?”

“Love knows no limits, my raven, even between people. Their passion is obviously too great to be shared with only two people.”

“Ajantis is a paladin, isn’t that supposed to be punishable by death in the Order?”

Further conversation halted as the three hotly discussed party members bounded down the stairs in a rush.

“Xan, Haer’Dalis told us of your success! I think a toast is in order!” Tybalt announced with an amused grin on his face.

The elves and paladin ignored the good news. “Fly? Have you seen a fly?” Aerie asked them desperately.

“Are you all right, Ajantis?” Jaheira frowned. “Have you a cold? Your voice is higher than normal.”

“I’m not- I mean…it’s too hard to explain right now,” the paladin said strangely. His voice had sounded almost like a girl’s for a moment before deepening beyond his normal timbre.

“The good knight is probably tired from his…ritual,” Haer’Dalis grinned. Yoshimo winked at Aerie conspiratorially.

“Have you seen a fly come through here?” Xan demanded impatiently.

“Oh, what’s the point?” Aerie asked sourly. “It’s useless searching; we might as well get used to living like this.”

“You’re starting to sound like Xan,” Valygar told the girl disapprovingly. “I hope he isn’t influencing you in the wrong way.”

“I am not a bad influence!” Aerie shouted.

Valygar wrinkled his brow in confusion. “I didn’t say you were.” He stared at Xan. “Is there a problem between you and Aerie?”

“As a matter of fact,” the elf muttered.

“There it is!” Ajantis pointed at a fly buzzing around a roast on the next table. “Don’t let it get away!” His voice had once again reverted to its high pitch.

The three chased the fly onto a nearby table and tripped over each other in an effort to reach it. “I wonder how they react to spiders,” Yoshimo grinned.

The three muttered to themselves for a while before Ajantis gripped Xan intensely. “Would you want to be with me like this?” The paladin gently stroked the elf’s cheek and whispered, “Could you love me like this?”

The group stared at them in shock. Tybalt cleared his throat. “Ajantis? Xan? What’s going on?”

Haer’Dalis placed a hand on Tybalt’s arm. “Does the sight upset you, my raven?”

Tybalt shook his head. “No…it-it’s fine. But I thought…” Of all the group members to be…this way, he hadn’t expected it to be the depressed elf and the uptight paladin. Though maybe there was a deep repression which caused them to act as irritably as they did around each other all the time.

The bard smiled. “Who are we to deny them happiness, if only for a short while? Let them love, Tybalt.” Tybalt stared at the bard, wondering what Haer’Dalis thought of this unlikely show of affection between men.

Aerie noticed this conversation and narrowed her eyes. “I do not love the paladin!” she cried fiercely.

“I should say not,” Haer’Dalis assented. “Not after seeing him with yon elf. Best to move on to more fertile grounds, my dove.”

By now, the less-than-private display of affection had ended and Ajantis gestured and spoke quietly. It looked as if the paladin were showing the elf how to use magic, but that was impossible. Yet, after a moment of waiting, the elf did indeed create a web to catch the fly; he looked as surprised at this minor spell as the paladin, yet no one else could understand their reactions. Xan was a competent spellcaster, why doubt his abilities now?

“Back to the room!” Ajantis commanded, and all three trampled back upstairs.

Valygar shook his head. “I don’t know how, but this is all magic’s fault.”

Jaheira snorted and focused on her meal. “We have a tendency to attract the most interesting traveling companions.” She shook her head and they all resumed their dinners.

Sometime later, Tybalt and Haer’Dalis sat alone as the others attended various tasks before heading to bed. “You asked me before what a tiefling is,” the bard said. “And I must give you an honest answer. Somewhere in my family’s past one of my ancestors lay with a fiend and bore fruit from the union. I am not sure which side of the family my traits come from, nor what type of demon or devil is in my bloodline. We have not been exactly proud of our heritage and make no effort to accurately document it.” He smiled ironically.

Tybalt thought this over, then smiled easily. “Well, if that’s all it is, there’s no problem, is there?”

Haer’Dalis looked at him with a hint of surprise. “This revelation does not offend you or make me lesser in your eyes? Many fear the hints of the infernal they see in my countenance; I would not blame you for sharing their views.”

Tybalt began to laugh and the bard, somewhat annoyed, said, “If there is a private joke, here, my raven, kindly be so good as to let me in on it. This is not the reaction I expected, nor have I come across such a receptive audience.”

The Bhaalspawn wiped his eyes and continued to giggle. “I’m sorry, Haer’Dalis, but you’ll understand in a moment. See, we’re more alike than you think.”

The bard showed signs of understanding. “You, too, carry demonic blood within?”

“Almost as good,” he confessed. “Actually, my father is much darker than your ancestor was, I’ll wager.”

“Do not keep this poor sparrow in the dark; you build up the exposition with no end in sight!” the tiefling cried.

“I am a Child of Murder,” Tybalt leant in to murmur to his companion, all seriousness. “I am a product of the dead god Bhaal, when he sired children across the world. My half-brother, Sarevok, was one, too, and he was trying to take our father’s place as the next Lord of Murder.” He sat back and nervously gauged the bard’s reaction.

Haer’Dalis’ face lit up excitedly. “Yes, I think I have heard tales of this god of yours! Murder incarnate! Just think what a tide of chaos would follow that power.” He stared at Tybalt. “This explains your ability to delve into the fiercest conflict time after time and live to tell the tale. You carry a part of entropy within your soul, spreading it where you walk.”

Tybalt shook his head negatively. “Don’t talk like that, Haer’Dalis. I have no wish to create terror and death. I can’t help what my father causes around me.”

“Don’t you see,” the bard explained fervently, “the discord within you screams to be let out despite your best efforts. You cannot stop it, you can only slow it down or release it to perform its work across the planes. Think of what you could be capable of were you to accept this gift, embrace it fully.”

Tybalt stood in horror and backed away from the table. “No,” he whispered inaudibly. “No, I won’t. You can’t make me-I won’t let you…” Tears fell down his cheeks in streams but he didn’t try to stop them. “If you knew what I went through at Irenicus’ hands, you wouldn’t say those things,” he trembled. “You want to use me like that monster!”

“My raven, I did not mean to cause you distress,” Haer’Dalis said, concerned. He reached to touch the shaking man but was rebuffed violently.

“Don’t touch me,” Tybalt spat. “Just stay away from me!” He ran to the stairs and the bard could hear a door slam.

“My raven,” Haer’Dalis mourned, “if only you accepted entropy’s inevitable hold over everything, your life would be a happier one.”

A shadow slid into view and sat across the bard. A beautiful woman faced him and slyly regarded him. “I couldn’t help overhear your conversation. Lovers’ quarrels are soon mended.”

Haer’Dalis cocked an eyebrow. “Aye, that they are. But you have the wrong idea. There is nothing between the raven and I.”

“Of course,” the woman laughed silently. “Regardless of your relationship, I can tell you are quickly becoming a close confidant of the Bhaalspawn.”

Haer’Dalis loosened his swords warily. “Who are you?”

“A friend,” the woman shrugged. “Or an enemy. You choose.”

“I’m listening,” he said cautiously.

The woman leaned over the table, allowing him a good view of her bosom. “I am in contact with several power individuals who have an interest in the Bhaalspawn’s fate.”

“His name is Tybalt,” Haer’Dalis said coldly.

“My mistake,” the woman said easily. “Considering your position on Tybalt’s power, I thought you might be interested in an arrangement.”

Haer’Dalis eyed the woman’s scantily clad form. “What kind of arrangement are we talking about?”

Her smile was all teeth. “We are willing to provide…benefits to you if you relate any important information about the Bhaal- Tybalt.”

The bard thought this over only for an instant. “I do not appreciate such suspicious meetings behind my friends’ backs,” he reported icily. “I do not know what manner of beast you are or who your masters are, vulture, but I have traveled long enough to know when I am being played. This is one dance I believe I will decline.” He stood and left the table.

The woman scowled after him but made no effort to chase him down. Someone sidled into the seat next to her. “Did you honestly think the tiefling would be bought so easily?” Yoshimo asked. “He may not have the strongest of morals, but while he is obsessed with Tybalt he will not betray him. Perhaps once the fascination has worn off…”

The woman snarled at him. “At least some of us are making an effort to follow orders.”

Yoshimo’s face darkened. “I push with all my heart to bring Tybalt to Irenicus, Safana, but this group is stubborn. If I were any more obvious they would become suspicious and my edge would be lost. It is best to travel with him for now. Besides, he cannot avoid finding Imoen forever. I believe we will journey to the Windspear Hills soon enough.”

“You had better see to it,” Safana hissed. “No one is impressed with your work, yet, and I would be afraid of getting on the master’s wrong side.”

Yoshimo paled but said nothing.

“Of course, I could speak on your behalf,” she whispered into his ear, giving it a lick. “My words are worth a lot, these days. More than yours, at any rate.”

“Keep your filthy paws off me,” the thief brushed her aside in disgust.

“You didn’t always act so cranky,” Safana smiled viciously. “Stress getting to you, Yoshimo? Maybe you aren’t as enthusiastic in your bounty as before. Be warned, Suna will be keeping close to you in case you have any reservations about your mission,” Safana continued.

“I cannot have any reservations,” the thief snapped furiously. “The geas will not let me, even if I wanted to. I want this ended as badly as Irenicus, if for different reasons. Isn’t there some idiot you could be seducing right now?” He turned away from her.

Safana stood angrily. “This is not over, Yoshimo.”

“No,” he replied wearily. “It never is. Goodnight, Safana.”

Heh, a bit too late for that and the metion of Khalid was quite uncalled for, too.

“Khalid is gone,” the druid asserted quietly. “I do not think he would wish me to live in his shadow forever. I have had time to mourn his death and think on the future. I do not want to be alone all my life.”

Well, Bioware says that she should be alone all her life unless the PC romances her... Die, Bioware, DIE! Erm, sorry. :P

“Why, not ten minutes before you arrived, I had gone to check on our missing comrades. They had performed a ritual, I am told, to restore the flightless dwarf into a bitter jackdaw. The ritual must have been successful, for when I entered, they were in the midst of…celebrating.”

Yeah, I can so imagine Aerie, Ajantis and Xan together... oh, wait. Actually, I can't.

“Ajantis is a paladin, isn’t that supposed to be punishable by death in the Order?”

That would be a pretty neat way for Xan to get rid of rival... though, I still insist that Aerie is not worth fighting for. :P

LOL! Ajantis-Xan romance??? 8)

Heh, when the Slayer will be tearing you limp from limp, you may reconsider your thoughtless words, Haer.

Haer’Dalis cocked an eyebrow. “Aye, that they are. But you have the wrong idea. There is nothing between the raven and I.”

Well, not yet, that is.

Yoshimo’s face darkened. “I push with all my heart to bring Tybalt to Irenicus, Safana, but this group is stubborn. If I were any more obvious they would become suspicious and my edge would be lost. Heh, Safana? Also working for Irenicus, then? Suits her well, the b****.

Suna? Valygar's ex? Ah, now that will cause some interesting tensions, no doubt... and Jae is a very jealous woman, I think... :P

Awww, this is cute! :D

:D as i've said before, i like them as a couple

Valygar relaxed. He was being foolish. “I’m sorry,” he said. “I’m a little rusty with the whole romance thing. It’s been a while since I’ve been with a woman.”

Jaheira arched an eyebrow. “How very forward of you. What makes you think you are ready to bed me?”

Duh! Had they been only holding hands up until now? Gah, what are you waiting for? Just do it already and you'll feel much better afterwards...

lol, somehow i don't see them having the same relationship as theodur and jaheira. this is slower paced and more cautious- they've both been hurt by love before

Valygar hugged her with all his might. She was trying so hard to do the right thing, yet she believed herself a failure in all departments. He would be there to support her and encourage her. “You are doing more than anyone could hope,” he whispered into her hair. “You are a far better friend than most people I’ve met. she can't be the stabilitizing force for everyone else's life all the time- she needs someone to rely on, too :D

“No,” she stated firmly. “I have slain Harpers; that enough is punishable by death. That my old mentor, Dermin, is involved in this means that the source of corruption runs deep. I have no desire to be a part of that corruption.”

I think she will be better of without them... :P

but will they see it that way? unfortunately for jaheira, things won't be as easy as dropping them like that

The Bhaalspawn thought this over carefully, then to everyone’s surprise, agreed. “If the Druid Council could help me like you hope, then why not try? They’re not going to try to imprison me or kill me if they can’t help, will they?” He asked this only half-joking.

Hmmm... I wonder what will happen there... iirc, Faldorn has not shown up yet in this tale... :D

one of the few BG1 npcs, in fact, that hasn't made an appearance yet. expect to see some druid on druid action soon :D

“No, they will not,” Jaheira said in some relief. “Thank you for listening to me, Tybalt. I know I can be harsh sometimes, but I do care greatly about you and your safety. I only do what I think is best for you.” Her hand lingered on his cheek as she smiled gently at him.

even valygar has his limits. and i don't see him as a secretive person with relationships, at least not with people he's so close with for so much of his life

“Is this true, Jaheira?” Tybalt demanded. “What about Khalid? What about-?” He didn’t know what else to say; there was nothing to stop her from enjoying life again. Still, this came as a shock, and a tiny burst of jealousy coursed through him.

Heh, a bit too late for that and the metion of Khalid was quite uncalled for, too.

tybalt's pulling out all the stops to try to prevent this, though you're right, it's way too late to do anything about it but whine. which he's good at hehe

Erm, sorry. :D

I know, I hate how the romances in the game are either with you or completely alone forever (disregarding the aerie-haer fling which doesn't last). the epilogues are so depressing for the unromanced npcs, making you want to either romance them or not have them in the group to avoid the guilt... :)

“Why, not ten minutes before you arrived, I had gone to check on our missing comrades. They had performed a ritual, I am told, to restore the flightless dwarf into a bitter jackdaw. The ritual must have been successful, for when I entered, they were in the midst of…celebrating.”

hey, stranger things have happened :D

“Ajantis is a paladin, isn’t that supposed to be punishable by death in the Order?”

That would be a pretty neat way for Xan to get rid of rival... though, I still insist that Aerie is not worth fighting for. :)

hehe, and I'm not sure she would appreciate her lover being sentenced to death and go into the arms of the man who sentenced him...

Tybalt shook his head. “No…it-it’s fine. But I thought…” Of all the group members to be…this way, he hadn’t expected it to be the depressed elf and the uptight paladin. Though maybe there was a deep repression which caused them to act as irritably as they did around each other all the time.

LOL! Ajantis-Xan romance??? :P

a mod idea if anyone's interested... :D

aww! i'm sure everyone's confused watching this whole thing, good thing they're able to explain later...that could make for some awkward conversations on hikes when everyone's watching those three and wondering what happened in their room....

Heh, that's more impressive than just a mere demon amongst the ancestors.

indeed :)

“Don’t you see,” the bard explained fervently, “the discord within you screams to be let out despite your best efforts. You cannot stop it, you can only slow it down or release it to perform its work across the planes. Think of what you could be capable of were you to accept this gift, embrace it fully.”

Heh, when the Slayer will be tearing you limp from limp, you may reconsider your thoughtless words, Haer.

yeah, he's really not the wisest person when thinking about chaos and its effects--he claims to want to embrace it, yet I think that's all just an act. he wants to live as much as the next man

Haer’Dalis cocked an eyebrow. “Aye, that they are. But you have the wrong idea. There is nothing between the raven and I.”

Well, not yet, that is.

oh, there's something, just nothing concrete or obvious. give it time, it will grow

Heh, Safana? Also working for Irenicus, then? Suits her well, the b****.

she must have heard about the bounty on his head earlier on, and since she's not shacking up with coran, she went out on her own...

Suna? Valygar's ex? Ah, now that will cause some interesting tensions, no doubt... and Jae is a very jealous woman, I think... :P

trying to include some character background that was lost in the game, flesh valy out a little more. yeah, this won't be good, adding some more dark history to the group and more guilt for tybalt to deal with...such is the life of a child of murder :P
