Finally got this one out. I was stuck for a while. School and my imagination shutting down conspired against me for a while, but I managed to get this one done. Not entirely happy about it, but I'll let you be the judge. It won't be long now before 'bad things happen'

The party made it’s way through the relatively broad and illuminated main track of the mine. The miners were pretty happy to see them, telling stories that seemed to grow more unlikely with every miner. An old grim faced soldier was more helpful.

“Kobolds...” Talek mentioned incredulously as they descended further down the mines. “Kobolds are behind the iron crisis?”

“Of course not.” Jaheira said impatiently. “These critters are easily intimidated in following whatever creature or group with a fair amount of power. Obviously someone is down in the mines commanding them. If we find that one, he might be able to tell us more.”

Talek growled. “He’d better!” He bared his teeth and tightened the grip on his sword.

Jaheira spoke tensely “Remember Talek. It is possible, even likely that the brain behind this crisis is not down here. I understand you want revenge for Gorion. But you should not do stupid things in your anger. We will need to get information.”

“Right, right... no killing the scum till he has talked.”

“Paying back dues must be done with care Talek, or you will kill innocents. And I would appreciate it fi we have no more of those.” Jaheira said with an edge to her voice.

“Yeah, yeah... be careful. Got it.” Talek’s mind was clearly elsewhere though.

The party walked on. As they descended deeper and deeper into the mines the number of miners decreased. And the ones that were seen looked incredibly nervous, fear causing them to work faster. Imoen and Khalid seemed infected by the atmosphere, and even Jaheira and Montaron were tense. Xzar was still softly moping and talking to himself while Talek looked at every corner as if he demanded the armoured figure to come forth instantly. The footsteps echoed through the long tunnels. Imoen and Montaron walked just behind Talek, eyes on the ground, their weapons ready to fire when....

“AAAAAGH! NO! NO! SOMEBODY HELP M...” The voice was cut off abruptly. Talek didn’t say a word but sped forward, the metal coated boots clanging on the stone floor. The others followed a few metres behind, Montaron cursing fools in general and Talek in particular.

Talek rounded a corner and saw two kobolds. One of them was sitting on a cart of iron ore and seemed to be pouring something on it, the other one was pulling his sword out of a miner’s corpse. The kobold hardly had the time to yip before Talek’s blade cleaved through his skull. The other critter heard the rest of the party arriving and jumped off the cart, running away quickly. Talek hadn’t stopped though, moving fast even with the heavy armour. His momentum still carried him forward and the creature was cut down.

Jaheira quickly rushed to the miner, but couldn’t do anything but close the man’s eyes. Montaron and Khalid both checked up on Talek who had taken something from the kobold corpse.”

“Are ye DAFT or just suicidal? For all ye got three dozen of the little vermin on our head.” Montaron yelled at talek’s back.

“Y...you r...really should be c...careful. T...these p..places are d...dangerous.” Khalid added.

“Uh-huh...” Talek answered, clearly distracted by something.

“What are ye up to now ye blasted fool?” Montaron and Khalid edged past Talek to see that he was looking at a small bottle of liquid. As they watched he sniffed at it tentatively and brought it towards his lips.

“STOP!” The halfling and half-elf yelled at the same time.

Talek froze and looked at the two in confusion. “Huh? What’s the matter? I just wondered what kind of stuff these kobolds drink. Doesn’t smell bad really.”

Montaron covered his face with his hand. “So, you find a bottle of liquid somewhere on a corpse in a dungeon...”

“Yeah.” Talek replied.

Khalid just stared in amazement. “And you decide to see what it tastes like.”

“Yeah.” Talek answered again. “What? You think it might be dangerous?”

Khalid nodded. “I...I think it might be...”

“Hey guys... look at this ore... it’s changing colour.” Imoen’s voice sounded. Everyone gathered round the cart filled with ore. Jaheira prodded the ore with her quarterstaff. Small pieces of it broke off.

“There is a liquid on it. Someone has recently tainted this metal. But where is the liquid?”

Montaron and Khalid looked at the swordsman with the bottle in his hand. He scratched his head. “Oh.. this could be it then.” He handed the bottle to Jaheira. “Good thing I didn’t drink it then.” He got a shocked stare from Jaheira and an exasperated groan from Imoen.

Jaheira took one of the kobold’s short swords and banged it on the cart’s edge to test, then poured the contents of the vial on it, careful not to get any of it on her. The sword changed colour slightly. When Jaheira banged it on the metal of teh cart again, it didn’t just break but almost fell into dust.

There was a silence. Then Talek spoke up. “Well why do they make it smell nice then?” The comment was ignored.

Jaheira threw away the remnants of the sword. “At least we know now that Amn is not behind this. We will have to find the place where they stock this poisonous fluid.”

Nobody contradicted her and the party moved on. As they got deeper and deeper they didn’t meet any miners at all. Now and then they encountered more kobolds, but they were in small groups and easily dispatched. Soon they reached the bottom level of the mine though, and there was no trace of a place where they came from. Suddenly, Imoen stopped.

“Hey, do you guys feel that?” She bowed down. “There’s a draft here.” She looked in the corner and found a small tunnel of about half a meter high and wide. The tunnel smelled faintly of damp dogs.

“I’d bet the gold in a Lathander church against an Ilmateri’s purse this is where the little buggers come in.” Montaron commented.

“Well what are we waiting for then?” Without another word Talek sheathed his sword, got on his hands and knees and started creeping through the tunnel.

“T...Talek wait. T...there could be g...guards on the other side.” Khalid called out.

“Then we’ll just have to kill them quick eh?” Talek’s chuckled from inside the tunnel.

Montaron made an inviting gesture to the tunnel towards Khalid with a mocking look on his face. “After ye, ‘brave warrior’ Or does yer wife get to go first?”

Jaheira’s eyes narrowed and Khalid’s face flushed in anger. “Mi...mi...mi...mi....” His mouth opened and shut a few times.

“’Mind yer own business’ yeah, yeah. Hurry up already. If we’re waiting for ye to finish being indignant we’ll still be here when all the iron is mined out.” Khalid ground his teeth and got down.

“You go after him, halfling. And I’ll go after you. I would hate for any ‘accidents’ to happen.” Jaheira’s glare could have cut glass, but Montaron just answered with a vicious chuckle and got in. Jaheira looked over her shoulder. “Girl, you go after the necromancer. And keep an eye on him.” She vanished after Montaron.

Xzar looked at Imoen with a grin on his face. “Keep an eye on him? Where, where... I can always use an extra eye. You’ve got an eye? I want an eye.” He giggled and suddenly looked scared. “Or does the eye want me? It’s staring at me. Well, I’ll put a stop to that!” He grabbed in his spell pouch and threw something on the ground before stamping on it. Imoen didn’t look down to see what it was. “Any more eyes staring?”

“I’m sure there aren’t...” Imoen was looking away from Xzar. “Xzar... why don’t you just go in the tunnel?”

Xzar and Imoen crept into the tunnel. From the other end suddenly came a yipping sound, followed by a inhuman shriek and a breaking sound and Talek’s voice. “Wow... these things have REALLY thin necks.”

Everyone came out of the tunnel, Talek with the limp kobold body in his hands before he tossed it. He grinned. “Heh, that’s what you get for dreaming away while on guard duty I guess.”

Jaheira looked around. “This is not man-made. I knew there were caves near Nashkel, but I didn’t know they stretched this far near the mines.”

The surroundings were indeed changed. Instead of the narrow, straight, claustrophobic hallways of the mines they were now in a relatively wide cave. The luminescent fungus and the rock formations caused the shadows to look threatening. The group started to move. Now and then they would run into dead ends. But as they advanced the number of kobold patrols increased. All of them were quickly defeated, but every fight slowed them down, and they advanced slowly. Creeping around in the caves, they soon lost track of time. They arrived at a deep crevice, with a thin natural bridge crossing it. They crossed it one by one. Jaheira was crossing while Talek, Xzar Khalid and Montaron were already on the other side. Imoen was going last.

“Careful druid. Don’t make a misstep.” Montaron said with a sarcastic edge to his voice. Khalid’s pale face became a bit paler. Xzar was swaying left and right as he looked at the druid. Talek was leaning against the wall, looking bored.

Jaheira didn’t respond until she was on the other side. Imoen started her own crossing without too much nervousness. The half elf looked down at the scowling halfling while holding her quarterstaff. “If only to preserve the peace, I would prefer you keep your comments to yourself halfling. Bad enough that I have to be near a vile, disgusting piece of all that is wrong with civilisation and his pet necromancer without constantly having to listen to your thinly veiled insults. So keep. your. distance.” She accentuated the last three words with taps of her quarterstaff on the ground.

Montaron sneered and made a mocking bow. “Oh, forgive me if my company offends your ladyship. May I suggest that if my presence displease her, her ladyship can take her retainer and bugger off somewhere else for a while. And then I’ll be happy to leave ye well enough alone.”

Jaheira’s knuckles went white around the quarterstaff. “Montaron, can it!” sounded Talek’s voice.

“Ooooh... Can you feel the love?” Xzar giggled.

“Talek. I think I will go ahead and see if I can find any clues up ahead. Not to mention pray to Silvanus to give me patience.”

Talek smiled. “Right. Don’t worry Jaheira, I’m sure Montaron will...” The words died on his lips as Jaheira turned and walked off with a glint in her eyes that looked like it could make a basilisk shrivel up and die. Talek moved behind her with a soothing smile on his face. Khalid shot his own, weaker, angry glare at Montaron. His eyebrows arched in surprise when he saw Montaron was grinning widely at the druid’s back.

At that time Imoen reached the other side. As she looked at Jaheira, her own eyes grew wide. “JAHEIRA! TRAP!”

The druid, froze immediately. But her point of gravity was too much to the front already and her eyes widened as she saw her foot coming down on the treacherous wire and the simple but lethal mechanics activated.

Talek’s armoured body hit her in the back like a hammer, throwing her forward. A small bolt flew through the air and sparked as it hit the opposing wall. With the loud noise of steel hitting stone Jaheira and Talek landed on the ground.

“Damn...got some hair I think.” Talek reached for the back of his head.

“J...Jaheira...A...are y...you w...w....wounded?”

“I’m fine.... I’m fine... Close call. Thank you Talek.” She breathed a few times as Talek got off her and Khalid helped her up.

“Tsk, tsk, tsk. Should be more careful druid. Always let someone who’s experienced in finding traps go first.” Montaron chided.

“Y...y...you knew a...a....about t...t...t...that trap.” Khalid’s face was beyond flushed now. He drew his sword. Montaron answered by keeping his own sword ready.

“Don’t know what ye’re talking about.”

“Y...y...you t...tried t...to k...kill m...my wife. I’ll...” He brought his sword up but his hand was grabbed by another one.

Talek stared angrily at the half-elf. “Khalid. What the bloody hell do you think you’re DOING?”

“P...p...protecting J...Jaheira” Khalid answered.

The human positioned himself between the half-elf and his target. “Go after the people that made that damn trap then! No reason to go after Montaron just because he didn’t see a trap! We all make mistakes right?”

Montaron smiled, keeping his eyes on Jaheira, who answered his glare. “Sure, I was distracted by worry about everyone getting across safely.

“H...he t...tried to kill her. It was n...no accident.”

“Hey, I’m as innocent as the next person.” He grinned at Jaheira. The druid scowled. Imoen looked from Jaheira to Montaron with an incredulour expression, catching Montaron’s second meaning.

Talek’s anger increased “Look, I’m getting really, REALLY sick of everyone accusing each other all the time. We’ve GOT an enemy and it’s the bastards that are behind this mess and Gorion’s murder! So for Tempus’ sake, PUT. THE. BLOODY. SWORD. AWAY.”

Khalid flinched slightly at Talek’s outburst but didn’t pull back. “Y...you didn’t see the l... look on his face. He w...was grinning.”

“Just thinking of something funny yer pretty little wife told me.” Montaron now looked at Khalid with a mocking glint in his eyes.

“D...don’t t...t...talk about my w...wife you...” Khalid tried to make a step forward but Talek was still in his way, the expression on his face getting increasingly darker.

“Khalid, do not worry about it.” Khalid looked over his shoulder at Jaheira, who gave Montaron a cold stare. “Montaron has made a mistake.” Her eyes narrowed. “We all make mistakes now and then, don’t we?”

“As you say druid, as you say.” Montaron replied.

Khalid wavered now. “B...but d...dear...”

Jaheira embraced her husband from behind, but her eyes didn’t leave the halfling. “I know my dear. Don’t worry. We’ll settle all misunderstandings with him later.”

Khalid sighed and put back his sword. “If you say so dear.”

Talek quickly cheered up. “There you go. Now come on. We’ve got someone to track down. Let’s keep our swords clean for him.”

“Hey...Talek...” Imoen came up behind her friend. “I think I’ll walk in front too. You know... I’ve got to train in finding traps and stuff.”

“Right... now that those matters are settled. Let’s go then.” Talek looked into the caves ahead eagerly. The others preceded or followed him. But it was clear he was the only one who felt comfortable in the presence of the rest of the party. The thief exhanged glances with the married couple every so often, while Xzar was looking at the two of them with a knowing glare, mixed with insanity. Imoen alternated between throwing distrustful looks at Montaron and questioning looks at Jaheira. No more words were exchanged. It seemed every next word might spark an inferno.

Hmm, what bad things? Should I be concerned? ;)

Jaheira spoke tensely “Remember Talek. It is possible, even likely that the brain behind this crisis is not down here. I understand you want revenge for Gorion. But you should not do stupid things in your anger. We will need to get information.”

“Right, right... no killing the scum till he has talked.”

Well, Mulahey is always happy to offer exposition in the game... :?

“What are ye up to now ye blasted fool?” Montaron and Khalid edged past Talek to see that he was looking at a small bottle of liquid. As they watched he sniffed at it tentatively and brought it towards his lips.

Gah! Heh, what happens if you have someone drink it in the game, i wonder...

“Yeah.” Talek answered again. “What? You think it might be dangerous?”

Khalid nodded. “I...I think it might be...”

Well, you can't know for sure, unless you try it... :?

Montaron and Khalid looked at the swordsman with the bottle in his hand. He scratched his head. “Oh.. this could be it then.” He handed the bottle to Jaheira. “Good thing I didn’t drink it then.” He got a shocked stare from Jaheira and an exasperated groan from Imoen.

Somehow the women always seem to have more common sense than men.

Jaheira threw away the remnants of the sword. “At least we know now that Amn is not behind this. We will have to find the place where they stock this poisonous fluid.”

Well, they could be Amnian kobolds, no?

Montaron made an inviting gesture to the tunnel towards Khalid with a mocking look on his face. “After ye, ‘brave warrior’ Or does yer wife get to go first?”

Well, it's not that she's wearing a skirt, anyways...

Xzar and Imoen crept into the tunnel. From the other end suddenly came a yipping sound, followed by a inhuman shriek and a breaking sound and Talek’s voice. “Wow... these things have REALLY thin necks.”

This guy doesn't know his own strength, does he?

Montaron sneered and made a mocking bow. “Oh, forgive me if my company offends your ladyship. May I suggest that if my presence displease her, her ladyship can take her retainer and bugger off somewhere else for a while. And then I’ll be happy to leave ye well enough alone.”

CRAP! :)

Err... should I read on? :)

Talek’s armoured body hit her in the back like a hammer, throwing her forward. A small bolt flew through the air and sparked as it hit the opposing wall. With the loud noise of steel hitting stone Jaheira and Talek landed on the ground.

Pfew. Well, at least Talek is good for something...

Come on Khalid, do it! I'll help you!

Talek stared angrily at the half-elf. “Khalid. What the bloody hell do you think you’re DOING?”

Can't you put two and two together, doofus?

The human positioned himself between the half-elf and his target. “Go after the people that made that damn trap then! No reason to go after Montaron just because he didn’t see a trap! We all make mistakes right?”

Yeah, too low 'Find Traps'. The usual death cause of Montaron in my games...

Too bad that Talek is an idiot. I suppose the only way to get rid of Montaron and Xzar is to kill them in the inconspicious way like Monty just tried with Jaheira.

Jaheira embraced her husband from behind, but her eyes didn’t leave the halfling. “I know my dear. Don’t worry. We’ll settle all misunderstandings with him later.”

*Imagines a mutilated Monty and sings happily* :?

“Hey...Talek...” Imoen came up behind her friend. “I think I’ll walk in front too. You know... I’ve got to train in finding traps and stuff.”

Besides, her 'Find traps' is much better than Monty's

Yep, though the 'Tazok sent me' trick will be hard to pull with Talek 'the name is Talek Gorionson' Gorionson amon your party.

“What are ye up to now ye blasted fool?” Montaron and Khalid edged past Talek to see that he was looking at a small bottle of liquid. As they watched he sniffed at it tentatively and brought it towards his lips.

Khalid nodded. “I...I think it might be...”

Well, you can't know for sure, unless you try it... :D

That's what I thought. Khalid is saying 'might be' mostly because he's not the kind of guy to say 'of course you idiot'

Khalid and Montaron are pretty sharp and Xzar is rather perceptive regarding whatever world he's in. It's just Talek affecting the average.

Jaheira threw away the remnants of the sword. “At least we know now that Amn is not behind this. We will have to find the place where they stock this poisonous fluid.”

Well, they could be Amnian kobolds, no?

But would the Amnish use kobolds? Especially to kill their own soldiers? Then again, we ARE alking about the Amnish.

Montaron made an inviting gesture to the tunnel towards Khalid with a mocking look on his face. “After ye, ‘brave warrior’ Or does yer wife get to go first?”

Well, it's not that she's wearing a skirt, anyways... :)

IIRC they didn't have underwear in that age did they?

Xzar and Imoen crept into the tunnel. From the other end suddenly came a yipping sound, followed by a inhuman shriek and a breaking sound and Talek’s voice. “Wow... these things have REALLY thin necks.”

This guy doesn't know his own strength, does he?

Doesn't know a lot. He DID mean to break the neck though. Was just surprised it was so easy to kill. Not the first time that happened.

Montaron sneered and made a mocking bow. “Oh, forgive me if my company offends your ladyship. May I suggest that if my presence displease her, her ladyship can take her retainer and bugger off somewhere else for a while. And then I’ll be happy to leave ye well enough alone.”

Hehe... that's nasty...

Montaron IS nasty.

Talek smiled. “Right. Don’t worry Jaheira, I’m sure Montaron will...” The words died on his lips as Jaheira turned and walked off with a glint in her eyes that looked like it could make a basilisk shrivel up and die. Heh... I thought you'd react to that.

The druid, froze immediately. But her point of gravity was too much to the front already and her eyes widened as she saw her foot coming down on the treacherous wire and the simple but lethal mechanics activated.

Err... should I read on? :?

Heh, nah, that'd be a shitty way for Jaheira to go.

Good reflexes and dead weight.

Come on Khalid, do it! I'll help you!

Oh he wants to... trust me, he wants to.

Talek stared angrily at the half-elf. “Khalid. What the bloody hell do you think you’re DOING?”

Can't you put two and two together, doofus?

Talek: Of course I can it's...*mumble, mumble* f...four. But what does geography's got to do with anything?

The human positioned himself between the half-elf and his target. “Go after the people that made that damn trap then! No reason to go after Montaron just because he didn’t see a trap! We all make mistakes right?”

Yeah, too low 'Find Traps'. The usual death cause of Montaron in my games...

Usually followed by Xzar's declaration of non-love.

Too bad that Talek is an idiot. I suppose the only way to get rid of Montaron and Xzar is to kill them in the inconspicious way like Monty just tried with Jaheira.

Jaheira alredy tried that, but stopped because of Khaldi. If she gets another chance however...

Jaheira embraced her husband from behind, but her eyes didn’t leave the halfling. “I know my dear. Don’t worry. We’ll settle all misunderstandings with him later.”

*Imagines a mutilated Monty and sings happily* :D

Everyone's favouite piece of scum. Heh..when I first heard him I was... "Hey, that's Le Chuck!"

“Hey...Talek...” Imoen came up behind her friend. “I think I’ll walk in front too. You know... I’ve got to train in finding traps and stuff.”

Besides, her 'Find traps' is much better than Monty's :)

Odd really. How much do you learn of traps in Candlekeep. Picking locks, sneaking and pickpocketing. Yes. but traps?

Thanks for reviewing.

Very good chapter I rather enjoyed it.

Gah! Heh, what happens if you have someone drink it in the game, i wonder...

Poison.... Yes I know this from experience. I was CURIOUS!

It's okay Rand, I was also curious what effects the potion would have if you drank it ;)

Heh.... and I was just out of healing spells. Had Imoen die while I was watching and pleading for the poison to stop.

Your Talek needs good companions, otherwise he won't survive to ToB!

Nice chapter!

“Kobolds...” Talek mentioned incredulously as they descended further down the mines. “Kobolds are behind the iron crisis?”

Don't mock kobolds, Talek. When they get hold of fire arrows they can be pretty nasty little critters.

“Are ye DAFT or just suicidal? For all ye got three dozen of the little vermin on our head.” Montaron yelled at talek’s back.

But he didn't, so give him a break for once, Monty.

“What are ye up to now ye blasted fool?” Montaron and Khalid edged past Talek to see that he was looking at a small bottle of liquid. As they watched he sniffed at it tentatively and brought it towards his lips.

My first Bhaalspawn did that too...

“STOP!” The halfling and half-elf yelled at the same time.

...and unfortunately he didn't have such sensible companions. Fortunately Jaheira had a cure poison spell handy.

Well, 99.9% of the bottles of liquid you find on corpses in dungeons are beneficial potions. So you can hardly blame the boy, really.

There was a silence. Then Talek spoke up. “Well why do they make it smell nice then?” The comment was ignored.

:) C'mon guys, where's your sense of curiosity? I want to know why they make it smell nice, too.

“Well what are we waiting for then?” Without another word Talek sheathed his sword, got on his hands and knees and started creeping through the tunnel.

Whoa, Talek - best let someone with some trap spotting skils take the lead down here...

“’Mind yer own business’ yeah, yeah. Hurry up already. If we’re waiting for ye to finish being indignant we’ll still be here when all the iron is mined out.” Khalid ground his teeth and got down.

Just ignore him, Khalid.

“Careful druid. Don’t make a misstep.” Montaron said with a sarcastic edge to his voice. Khalid’s pale face became a bit paler. Xzar was swaying left and right as he looked at the druid. Talek was leaning against the wall, looking bored.

Oh, cut it out, Monty.

“Ooooh... Can you feel the love?” Xzar giggled.

LOL!

At that time Imoen reached the other side. As she looked at Jaheira, her own eyes grew wide. “JAHEIRA! TRAP!”

So Monty saw it and didn't say anything? I really can't see this going on much longer without the Harpers and the Zhents coming to blows.

The druid, froze immediately. But her point of gravity was too much to the front already and her eyes widened as she saw her foot coming down on the treacherous wire and the simple but lethal mechanics activated.

Eep!

Talek’s armoured body hit her in the back like a hammer, throwing her forward. A small bolt flew through the air and sparked as it hit the opposing wall. With the loud noise of steel hitting stone Jaheira and Talek landed on the ground.

Phew! Nice one, Talek.

“Y...y...you knew a...a....about t...t...t...that trap.” Khalid’s face was beyond flushed now. He drew his sword. Montaron answered by keeping his own sword ready.

Go for it, Khalid.

Yeah right.

“Hey, I’m as innocent as the next person.” He grinned at Jaheira. The druid scowled. Imoen looked from Jaheira to Montaron with an incredulour expression, catching Montaron’s second meaning.

Yes, but Jaheira did actually heal him in the end.

Talek’s anger increased “Look, I’m getting really, REALLY sick of everyone accusing each other all the time. We’ve GOT an enemy and it’s the bastards that are behind this mess and Gorion’s murder! So for Tempus’ sake, PUT. THE. BLOODY. SWORD. AWAY.”

:) Maybe he can stop this for now, but he's only putting off the inevitable.

“Right... now that those matters are settled.

Poor Talek - it's going to be hard for him to pick sides if it comes to a fight. But for his sake I hope he ends up with Khalid and Jaheira.

“Kobolds...” Talek mentioned incredulously as they descended further down the mines. “Kobolds are behind the iron crisis?”
Don't mock kobolds, Talek. When they get hold of fire arrows they can be pretty nasty little critters.
Heh... yeah, but i wouldn't put them as the mastermind of ANYTHING.

“Are ye DAFT or just suicidal? For all ye got three dozen of the little vermin on our head.” Montaron yelled at talek’s back.
But he didn't, so give him a break for once, Monty.
oops, forgot a know.. anyway, Monty is like that. And Talek doesn't really mind. You can insult his intelligence as much as you want. He doesn't have any illusions there.

“What are ye up to now ye blasted fool?” Montaron and Khalid edged past Talek to see that he was looking at a small bottle of liquid. As they watched he sniffed at it tentatively and brought it towards his lips.
My first Bhaalspawn did that too...
Heh...

“STOP!” The halfling and half-elf yelled at the same time.
...and unfortunately he didn't have such sensible companions. Fortunately Jaheira had a cure poison spell handy.
MY first Bhaalspawn wasn't so lucky. Bhaal probably laughed his ass off.

Well, 99.9% of the bottles of liquid you find on corpses in dungeons are beneficial potions. So you can hardly blame the boy, really.
Yeah... but from KOBOLDS?

There was a silence. Then Talek spoke up. “Well why do they make it smell nice then?” The comment was ignored.
:) C'mon guys, where's your sense of curiosity? I want to know why they make it smell nice, too.
Heh, plenty of poisonous stuff that smells kind of nice no?

“Well what are we waiting for then?” Without another word Talek sheathed his sword, got on his hands and knees and started creeping through the tunnel.
Whoa, Talek - best let someone with some trap spotting skils take the lead down here...
But that would be SMART.

“’Mind yer own business’ yeah, yeah. Hurry up already. If we’re waiting for ye to finish being indignant we’ll still be here when all the iron is mined out.” Khalid ground his teeth and got down.
Just ignore him, Khalid.
Khalid is a bit sensitive.

He's enjoying himself too much.

“Ooooh... Can you feel the love?” Xzar giggled.
LOL!
Any moment now Jaheira and Montaron will declare their eternal love.

At that time Imoen reached the other side. As she looked at Jaheira, her own eyes grew wide. “JAHEIRA! TRAP!”
So Monty saw it and didn't say anything? I really can't see this going on much longer without the Harpers and the Zhents coming to blows.[/quotte]

And it will not.

The druid, froze immediately. But her point of gravity was too much to the front already and her eyes widened as she saw her foot coming down on the treacherous wire and the simple but lethal mechanics activated.
Eep!
Scary moment for everyone's favourite harper druid there.

Talek’s armoured body hit her in the back like a hammer, throwing her forward. A small bolt flew through the air and sparked as it hit the opposing wall. With the loud noise of steel hitting stone Jaheira and Talek landed on the ground.
Phew! Nice one, Talek.
He may not be a quick thinker, but he IS a quick acter.

“Y...y...you knew a...a....about t...t...t...that trap.” Khalid’s face was beyond flushed now. He drew his sword. Montaron answered by keeping his own sword ready.
Go for it, Khalid.
Montaron stands little chance really. He hadn't planned it like this.

Yeah right.
Talek is the only one who fully believes him really.

“Hey, I’m as innocent as the next person.” He grinned at Jaheira. The druid scowled. Imoen looked from Jaheira to Montaron with an incredulour expression, catching Montaron’s second meaning.
Yes, but Jaheira did actually heal him in the end.
Yep, and Montaron told her she should finish what she started.

And once again, everybody but Talek knows it.

The party made it’s way through the relatively broad and illuminated main track of the mine. The miners were pretty happy to see them, telling stories that seemed to grow more unlikely with every miner. An old grim faced soldier was more helpful.

Oh, no Immy's reaction to their tales? :D It's her first dungeon crawl, after all, and here're all these yipping demons and "dragon, of course". :)

Talek froze and looked at the two in confusion. “Huh? What’s the matter? I just wondered what kind of stuff these kobolds drink. Doesn’t smell bad really.”

LOL! I haven't anticipated it, but it's so... Talek :)

And again LOL! "If you drink too much from the bottle marked "poison"..."

I thought it's "My wife is of no concern of yours", but Monty's guess is better :)

Maybe where's a bit too much "they" in this paragraph? (And in one instance "them" could mean either party or kobold patrols.)

“JAHEIRA! TRAP!”

Tricksy hobbitses... :P

Talek’s armoured body hit her in the back like a hammer, throwing her forward. A small bolt flew through the air and sparked as it hit the opposing wall. With the loud noise of steel hitting stone Jaheira and Talek landed on the ground.

:) Wow, he's quick!

The human positioned himself between the half-elf and his target. “Go after the people that made that damn trap then! No reason to go after Montaron just because he didn’t see a trap! We all make mistakes right?”

:) Very, very naive. Not even "you can't prove ir", just plain "no"...

“Hey, I’m as innocent as the next person.”

The next person being Xzar, of course :)

He grinned at Jaheira. The druid scowled. Imoen looked from Jaheira to Montaron with an incredulour expression, catching Montaron’s second meaning.

Oh, he means Jaheira? Well, now that I think of it, his actions seem almost justified then. But she healed Monty in the end, thereas he followed through with his attempt.

“Hey...Talek...” Imoen came up behind her friend. “I think I’ll walk in front too. You know... I’ve got to train in finding traps and stuff.”

Immy probably has the best diplomatic skills in this group :)

Good chapter. With this group they almost can't help but to be on the breaking point all the time, and I rather liked their bickering (and worse). :D Can't wait for Xzar to join in the fun
Gah! Heh, what happens if you have someone drink it in the game, i wonder... :P
:D Poison.... Yes I know this from experience. I was CURIOUS!
IIRC, not just any run-of-the-mill poison, but permament -1 to Con. ( :) Hey, I was curious too!)

Heh... nah, I'm slowing things down enough as it is. I really have a tendency to have everything happen 'on camera' so it was a deliberate decision to skip that.

Talek froze and looked at the two in confusion. “Huh? What’s the matter? I just wondered what kind of stuff these kobolds drink. Doesn’t smell bad really.”

LOL! I haven't anticipated it, but it's so... Talek :)

:) Nice way of putting it.

Montaron covered his face with his hand. “So, you find a bottle of liquid somewhere on a corpse in a dungeon...”

Someone needs to buy Talek the 'adventuring guide for dummies.' make that the 'adventur eguide for total idiots.'

Heh, one thing of Montaron that is REALLY infuriating towards Khalid. He pisses him off and when Khalid starts to stutter his angry response he finished it for him. I'd imagine that'd drive anyone close to murder.

The surroundings were indeed changed. Instead of the narrow, straight, claustrophobic hallways of the mines they were now in a relatively wide cave. The luminescent fungus and the rock formations caused the shadows to look threatening. The group started to move. Now and then they would run into dead ends. Right you are. Thanks for that one.

Tricksy hobbitses...

:) :) :P Okay, now I've got a Jaheira/Gollum hybrid in my head. THANKS A BUNCH! :)

Talek’s armoured body hit her in the back like a hammer, throwing her forward. A small bolt flew through the air and sparked as it hit the opposing wall. With the loud noise of steel hitting stone Jaheira and Talek landed on the ground.

:P Wow, he's quick!

As long as it doesn't invole thinking, Talek can be really quick.

The human positioned himself between the half-elf and his target. “Go after the people that made that damn trap then! No reason to go after Montaron just because he didn’t see a trap! We all make mistakes right?”

:) Very, very naive. Not even "you can't prove ir", just plain "no"...

Yep. Unless it's openly done, Talek doesn't even consider the possibility that a friend would betray him.

“Hey, I’m as innocent as the next person.”

The next person being Xzar, of course :D

Not quite...

Yep. Of course, Montaron would consider her change of mind a sign of stupidity. It's not like he's out for vengeance. He'd have done it if Jaheira hadn't done it either. But this way, eventhough he failed, he blemishes Jaheira's name in front of Khalid and Imoen. Of course, after this, Jaheira won't hold back next time. But this time Montaron has healing potions.

“Hey...Talek...” Imoen came up behind her friend. “I think I’ll walk in front too. You know... I’ve got to train in finding traps and stuff.”

Immy probably has the best diplomatic skills in this group :D

Well, she and Talek are the only one who are actually TRYING to keep the group together. But yeah, Imoen is better at reading between the lines.

Good chapter. With this group they almost can't help but to be on the breaking point all the time, and I rather liked their bickering (and worse). :D Can't wait for Xzar to join in the fun :)

Heh, sadly, the bickering wont last for ever. I'll kinda miss it as well though. It's nice to write a party that consists of people distrustful of each other. But no such party could survive for long.

Jaheira spoke tensely “Remember Talek. It is possible, even likely that the brain behind this crisis is not down here. I understand you want revenge for Gorion. But you should not do stupid things in your anger. We will need to get information.”

“Right, right... no killing the scum till he has talked.”

Right.

“Paying back dues must be done with care Talek, or you will kill innocents. And I would appreciate it fi we have no more of those.” Jaheira said with an edge to her voice.

“Yeah, yeah... be careful. Got it.” Talek’s mind was clearly elsewhere though.

Oh dear, oh dear...that's about like asking my Edwin to be careful. 8)

ROFL! Oh, this was the funniest bit of this chapter! I have to admit, my first PC got herself killed by drinking that stuff.

Liked the way you kept building tension between Harpers and Zhents throughout the chapter!

Montaron smiled, keeping his eyes on Jaheira, who answered his glare. “Sure, I was distracted by worry about everyone getting across safely.

“H...he t...tried to kill her. It was n...no accident.”

I think there will be outright fighting soon...

“Hey, I’m as innocent as the next person.” He grinned at Jaheira. The druid scowled. Imoen looked from Jaheira to Montaron with an incredulour expression, catching Montaron’s second meaning.

As I said, I think they'll come to blows soon. I really wonder how Talek will deal with *that*!

Talek's tattered sense of morality goes RIGHT out of the window when the people wo killed Gorion are involved.

“Paying back dues must be done with care Talek, or you will kill innocents. And I would appreciate it fi we have no more of those.” Jaheira said with an edge to her voice.

 Nice analogy. And yes, when it comes to 'almost getting yourself killed' tendencies, Talek might as well have been Edwin's brother.

“What are ye up to now ye blasted fool?” Montaron and Khalid edged past Talek to see that he was looking at a small bottle of liquid. As they watched he sniffed at it tentatively and brought it towards his lips.

It seems EVERYONE did that. But yeah, it was my favourite pieces to write too.

Sometimes, ignoring Talek is the bext policy.

Oh yes....

“Hey, I’m as innocent as the next person.” He grinned at Jaheira. The druid scowled. Imoen looked from Jaheira to Montaron with an incredulour expression, catching Montaron’s second meaning.

Ooooh...nice!

I think Jaheira's hinking of some very non-printable words in druidic now.

“Hey...Talek...” Imoen came up behind her friend. “I think I’ll walk in front too. You know... I’ve got to train in finding traps and stuff.”

Evidence up till now suggests 'badly'
