Mazzy Fentan was in no shape to go with them. She was exhausted and starving. As Adrian rolled his eyes, Tree and Anomen fed her out of their own rations. This Fentan might be unusual for her kind in many ways, but her appetite was purebred Halfling, or "Hairfoot," as Korgan put it.

But what she had to say, about the slaughtering and corruption of her own party, including her lover Patrick, was grim indeed. A Lord of Shades, with many followers, and more importantly, a Shadow Dragon.

"Shadow Dragon," Adrian mouthed the words, tasting them. He looked at Edwin, who looked back from under his stained hood with grim, haunted eyes. Adrian could see in the Thayvian's eyes the thought he himself had had earlier; I wish Xzar and Kirya were here.

But the Necromancers were not here; they would have to manage on their own.

"Dinnae worry, Adrian," Korgan said cheerfully. "We can handle it. Between me Berserker rage and yer Bhaalspawn powers, we'll take the beastie down."

"I wish I had your confidence," Adrian muttered. Behind him, Jan muttered something about the Great Turnip Dragon of East Jabip, but by his nervous tone his heart wasn't in the telling.

As Tree healed Mazzy, Anomen walked into the next room and came face to face with the giant statue Mazzy had told them of. Apparently it could give them a piece of a symbol of Anumator, the former Netherese Sun God. Mazzy's party had no luck with getting the segment, which would've helped them battle the Shade Lord. Anomen asked Adrian to let him try, and Adrian had shrugged and nodded. Anomen was singed twice by punishing spells during the questioning, but eventually he held the golden pie-wedge aloft in triumph.

"Is the way back clear? Your druid has healed me well," Mazzy said.

"The exit from the temple has been freed," Viconia answered. "But the woods beyond may still hold wolves of darkness."

"You'd be better off waiting for us to kill the Shadow Lord, Lady Mazzy," Jan spoke with unexpected courtesy. "Afterwards, if I guess right, all the shadows will be gone."

"If you win through," Mazzy pointed out, but softly.

Jan shrugged. "Better uncertainty then doom."

Reluctantly, she nodded and clasped hands with the Gnome with a moment before lying down in her now-unlocked cell.

As the party moved on, Adrian asked him, "What was all that about?"

Jan had an odd expresion on his face. "I've no use for her manners--I get enough of that from Anomen--but in her face I see the face of....someone I once knew." The gnome fell silent, certainly an unusual state for him. Adrian frowned thoughtfully, but didn't pres the point.

They came next to a light gem sitting on a plinth. Mazzy had told them it could remove one of the shadow barriers between them and their goal, but once they took it, darkness would fall, and ambush with it.

Thus forewarned, the party was not suprised, as Anomen took the gem from the plinth, to hear the snarling of another shadow wolfpack in the deepening darkness.

Yes, as Necromancers they would surely have had some special insight to offer.

As the party moved on, Adrian asked him, "What was all that about?"

Poor Jan.

Oooh, time for lots of shadow fighting.

It was good to see a realistic portrayal of Mazzy's condition in the cell. I know the game required it, but she popped out of there in awfully good shape when we played that part.

Cute... I think...

And a whole lot of luck. :)
