Chapter Four: Letters and Flaming Fists

Leen tossed and turned. No matter how hard she tried, she couldn’t get to sleep. She and Imoen had retired to bed a few hours ago, two or maybe three. However, she couldn’t be sure. She had heard Khalid and Jaheira enter their bedroom not to long ago though, and by looking out her window, she could tell that it was late.

She threw her covers off in defeat and got out of bed. She walked over to the nearby desk in her room, picking up her backpack as she passed it.

“Now is as good a time as any to read that letter,” she told herself, as she reached into her backpack to get it.

She sat at the desk, holding the letter in one hand. She closed her eyes and quickly opened it, before she turned against the idea again.

Silently, she read the letter.

After she had read it, she laid it down on the desk, after which she sat there, rubbing her forehead.

“What did it mean?” she asked herself. The letter itself had presented more questions then answers, leaving Leen none the wiser as to why her and Gorion were attacked.

It appeared that an old friend of Gorion’s, only referring to themselves as E, had written to inform Gorion that the other side was ready to make its move.

“Who are the other side?” Leen asked herself. “Perhaps that armoured man and his lackeys.”

“Those in thy care,” Leen repeated to herself. “Well, that must be referring to myself and Melfice. So it was only me he wanted, Gorion died for me.”

Tears started to gather in her eyes again. She walked over to the window and looked out of it. After a few minutes of silent thought, she began her self interrogation again. “What did that other letter say? I have to know”

She looked at her door and slowly moved towards it. Moments later, she found herself stood in front of the door that she heard Khalid and Jaheira go through when they came to bed. She knelt down beside it and listened for any sign of activity coming from the other side. She heard nothing except the slow and quiet breaths of the room’s two occupants.

Carefully, she tried the door and discovered it locked. “Damn.” she muttered under her breath.

She removed her thieving tools from her belt; she didn’t like using any of her thieving skills other then her agility and ability to move silently, but sometimes she found that she had no choice. She quickly and quietly set to work, and in no time at all she had gained access to Khalid and Jaheira’s bedroom.

She quickly surveyed her surroundings. Both of her new companions were fast asleep in each other’s arms; their belongings spread out on the desk, not too far from their bed. Leen silently crept across their room towards the desk. When she reached her destination, she began to carefully rummage through their belongings.

There was Khalid’s splint mail armour, long sword and his medium shield. Next to his equipment, there was Jaheira’s leather armour, quarterstaff and sling, as well as a small pouch filled with sling bullets.

Leen cursed, the scroll wasn’t there. Another quick look around the room and she found a chest tucked away in one of the corners. After a couple of attempts, and one very tense moment when Leen thought that Jaheira would wake up, she finally managed to open it.

Inside were two potions, one of healing and another of invisibility. They was also a small pouch, containing a few gold coins and, to Leen’s delight, the letter that she had taken from the mage who had attacked her when she first arrived at the Friendly Arm.

She opened it and silently read it, using the small amount of moonlight that trickled in through the window as her light source. She almost cried out loud when she saw that it was a bounty notice. No less then two hundred gold coins had been placed on her head. She silently placed the scroll back in the chest and re-locked it. Hastily she left the room, locking the door on her way out.

“Someone really wants me dead,” she said to herself, as she made her way back to her room.

When she finally got back into her room, she decided against trying to sleep. Instead, she donned her studded leather armour and slid her bastard sword into its scabbard across her back. Leaving her other weapons where they were, she left her room once more, only this time her destination was the woods outside.

*****************************

Leen travelled silently through the woods. She had snuck past a couple of the Friendly Arm guards on her way out. She didn’t know the rules for leaving at night, but at the moment she wasn’t really in the mood to find out.

She was holding her bastard sword tightly now, she had already run into a pair of hobgoblins. She had dispatched them easily, but she had nearly taken a fatal wound as she was drawing her bastard sword from its scabbard and she didn’t want to take the same risk again.

She wasn’t sure how far into the woods she had travelled, but she guessed she had probably gone too far and that she should turn around and head back now. Just as she turned, she heard the sound of someone running, coming from somewhere behind her.

She turned and saw an elf with black skin and white hair emerge from over a hill. She was wearing studded leather armour and was carrying a mace and a small shield.

“A Drow,” Leen gasped after the elf’s appearance had registered.

When the Drow saw Leen, she came running towards her, screaming. “Help me! If you don't help me, he'll kill me.”

Leen didn’t know what to do. She had heard that all Drow were evil but Gorion had always taught her to help those in need, no matter the cost.

“Calm down, I'll help you.” Leen replied.

“Thank you, thank you so much. My name is Viconia, and as you can tell, I’m not from around here.”

Leen heard the sound of someone approaching, and turned to see a human male, wearing plate mail and a helmet, that covered his entire face and had a red pummel on the top of it. He was carrying a long sword and a silver small shield.

“Step aside traveller, I am a member of the Flaming Fist. The woman you are harbouring is wanted for murder of the foulest sort. She is a dark elf; it should be obvious that she is evil.” He shouted, upon seeing that Leen was accompanying his intended victim.

Viconia feared that she may lose her only ally, so she responded by shouting, “He lies, I've done nothing wrong!” She looked at Leen, with a pleading look in her eyes.

“What do you intend to do once you have her?” Leen called to the Flaming Fist mercenary.

The mercenary laughed at this. “Kill her, of course.”

“Very well, you can have her then.” Leen replied, “But first you will have to go through me.” She levelled her sword, so that the point was pointing directly at the mercenary.

“A stupid decision! For harbouring a murderer, I sentence you to death!”

The Flaming Fist charged at Leen, who readied herself for his attack. He swung his sword at her head, but she easily caught his blade with her own. Leen pulled her sword free from his and moved back a little, to give herself room to form a strategy in.

She heard someone chanting from behind her, and realised that Viconia was a spell caster of some sort. Most probably a cleric, judging by the armour she was wearing.

She watched as green vines grew out of the earth and entangled themselves around the Flaming Fist’s feet, restricting his movement.

Leen took this opportunity and she ran forward to deliver her own attack. He raised his shield in anticipation of her attack, but Leen had suspected that he would do as such.

Instead of aiming a blow at his upper body, she bent down on her knees when she got within striking distance and slashed her sword towards his legs. Her sword glanced harmlessly off the first one, but it struck a weak spot in his armour on his other leg, wounding him a little.

Leen stood back up and returned to her safety position, to better observe the effects of her attack. She could see small amounts of blood pouring through the hole she had just made in his plate mail. She heard Viconia chanting one more and saw the Flaming Fist fell to the floor, it looked as though he was dead.

“You must attack him now, he won’t be unconscious for long!” She heard Viconia shout.

Taking Viconia’s advice, Leen once again lunged forward. This time her blade pierced his neck, killing him and leaving a trail of blood that poured down his armour, staining it red.

Viconia turned to Leen. “I thank you for risking yourself on my behalf. I know what you are thinking, you see my dark skin and won't trust me for it. I am a dark elf, but I'm an outcast and I need your help. I no longer receive my powers from the spider gods you surface dwellers fear so. The Goddess Shar grants me wisdom, and she is a surface divinity. If you'd let me join you, I would be most grateful. I have nowhere else to go.”

Leen thought for a moment. “I have no problem with you joining, but…I don’t know how my other companions would react to having a Drow join us.”

“Your other companions?” She asked, looking around. “I see no one else.”

“Well, that’s because they are all still at the Friendly Arm. You can come with me if you like, and we will see how they react.”

Viconia nodded. “Lead the way then, oh fearless leader.”

Together, Leen and Viconia headed for the Friendly Arm as the sun began to rise, signalling the start of another day.

Ah, finally got around it. A vacation of two weeks does mean, well, a lot of catching when you get back. :)

It appeared that an old friend of Gorion’s, only referring to themselves as E, had written to inform Gorion that the other side was ready to make its move.

Well, it means that a certain all powerful wizards couldn't be bothered to try to safe an old friend.

Sorry, I'm just anti-Elminster, I guess.

I like Leen. She seems to be a very active girl. :(

Inside were two potions, one of healing and another of invisibility. They was also a small pouch, containing a few gold coins and, to Leen’s delight, the letter that she had taken from the mage who had attacked her when she first arrived at the Friendly Arm.

*grin* Stealing from her friends, now, ey? Cute... :(

She turned and saw an elf with black skin and white hair emerge from over a hill. She was wearing studded leather armour and was carrying a mace and a small shield.

Woo! Vicky! Prospective party-member ahead!

The mercenary laughed at this. “Kill her, of course.”

Can't have that!

Well done! Nice fight.

Oh, boy. :(

Viconia nodded. “Lead the way then, oh fearless leader.”

I think Elminster is pritty cool myself but I just like wizards.

I'm glad you like it .

Leen had to kill the flaming fist because she wasnt given much choice. I chose the Neutral Good alignment for her instead of Lawful Good because she doesn't allows follow the traditional standards of "lawfulness", she is willing to kill, even an officicer(sp) of the law if she believes she is doing the right thing.

Her judgement and opinion on what is right will be tested in my next novel about her (which will be her story through BG2, thats also if people like this story and if i decide to write it) when she will have to make a chose about a particular someone that may go againts what other people believe she should do.
