i have a backlogue of chapters for a while, so i can post with some speed. i'll try to keep it in check, though, so i don't run out of buffer chapters, and so that anyone reading has a chance to read at their leisure.
enjoy!

Yoshimo, Xan, and Valygar rested in their rooms in the Five Flagons Inn. They would all recover allowing for substantial rest. Jaheira didn’t want to think how close the group had come to total annihilation. She supposed that she should be grateful to Tybalt for coming in and rescuing them, but she shuddered whenever she thought of the affront to Nature he had conjured up, and how quickly it had turned on them all. Whatever had happened since their separation, Tybalt had not fared for the better as he dealt with his heritage.

She still wondered about how the Shadow Thieves knew Tybalt would follow her into that strange building. Even after hearing Ajantis’ explanation of the slavers and the Order’s demand for their extermination, she could not work out how Bloodscalp had know exactly how to reunite the group.

She had promised Ajantis to help clear out the last slaver base tomorrow with the healthy party members; the sooner Tybalt was free of the Order’s power, the better. And she didn’t trust the paladin’s intentions, particularly, especially where they concerned Tybalt. The Order must have known of the Bhaalspawn’s heritage and used Ajantis as their eyes and ears. They would need to drop him as soon as possible.

Which might be harder than she first thought. The idiot paladin and the silly elf girl had been making moon eyes at each other when they thought no one else was looking. They acted like school children with their first crushes. Jaheira scoffed at their foolishness and hoped Aerie wouldn’t cause a fuss when Ajantis left. Strangely enough, the girl’s talents were coming in quite handy for the group, and as painful as it was for Jaheira to admit it, she would be reluctant to see Aerie leave.

The druid sighed and sipped her ale thoughtfully. With Valygar, Yoshimo, and Xan out of action for a while, her previous counsel was nonexistent; Minsc could barely think for himself let alone anyone else, Aerie and Ajantis were too busy tripping over their own feet to notice their surroundings, and Tybalt…

She wearily laid her head on the bar. She didn’t know what to do with Tybalt. He had changed since she had last seen him and she worried that the insanity he had shown in Irenicus’ dungeon hadn’t fully left him. She could not trust him as yet until she traveled with him further and witnessed his actions.

“If you’re that tired, you should go to bed,” Tybalt’s voice came from over her shoulder. She jumped nervously, guilty of her thoughts, but he didn’t seem to notice. He chuckled slightly and sat next to her. “I didn’t expect to find you at the bar. Shouldn’t you be out talking to trees or something?” He winced even as he said this, realizing the coldness to his remark. “Sorry, that didn’t come out right. It’s been difficult since-”

“Yes, I know,” Jaheira allowed, not sure she wanted to hear more. They had already exchanged stories since their emergence into Athkatla, but she could tell there was more to Tybalt’s journeys that he wasn’t telling her. Something dark shadowed his eyes, now, and he carried himself more carefully. “I wish-” She stopped, unsure of what to say in front of Tybalt. I wish that you weren’t a Child of Bhaal? That you were strong enough to overcome your father’s influence? That I was strong enough to save you from yourself? She let the thoughts drift away and stared at her ale.

Tybalt sensed the sentiment and nodded. “Me too. Sometimes I wish I had never left Candlekeep. Other times I want nothing more than to see Irenicus again and rip his heart from his chest. My life’s been one big blur up until now, just fleeting images of the present, swept away by time and the gods.” He ordered a drink and sipped it slowly.

“Did you miss me while I was gone?” he changed topics suddenly.

“What?” The question had caught her off guard but she was merely stalling to think of how to answer.

“You know, those weeks we were apart. Did you miss me or were you relieved I had left?”

“Tybalt!” she exclaimed, shocked and outraged. She gripped his face with both hands and stared into his eyes. “Every moment you were gone I worried for your safety and your sanity. Even now I am afraid that you will disappear from me again. Never doubt my love and care for you, no matter what happens later. I lost Khalid, I do not want to loose you, too.” As she said this, she knew it was true, yet something had changed between them during their separation. There had been a hint of…something with her former ward in her travels with him, but now, her thoughts turned to another sleeping in a room above them. Even with Tybalt in front of her, she could not convince herself that she would ever see him as a potential lover, even if she might have mere weeks ago.

Tybalt broke from her grasp and took a long slug from his mug. Her unspoken words did not fall on deaf ears. “Well, I had better get some rest if we’re going to go against the last of the slavers. I only hope they aren’t as tough as the ones today.”

“Ajantis said that the ones we fought today were the regional leaders, so I doubt the rest will pose more of a challenge. Still, you are right. We should both be at our best tomorrow. I will turn in, too.”

However, before she could follow through on this, Aerie came running up to them. “Oh, good, Jaheira, you’re still up!” She glanced at Tybalt and smiled shyly, though a hint of fear echoed in her eyes. She addressed Jaheira. “A friend of Uncle Quayle’s talked to me downstairs and needs our help! I-it must be very important if they asked for strangers’ help; I told them Quayle was g-gone but they said I could still help them. Please, will you listen to them? It would mean so much to me.”

The druid sighed. “I will listen to them if they make it brief; I must prepare for the coming day. But remember, we must first visit the Order to clear Tybalt’s debts.”

Aerie’s eyes widened at mention of Tybalt and she nervously licked her lips. In her eyes, the Order was an unquestionable organization of goodness which could not be disobeyed, and for someone to have come under their scrutiny was an enormous concern. “O-of course, J-jaheira,” she stammered quickly before fleeing up the stairs to her room.

Tybalt shook his head and smiled. “I don’t know who she’s more afraid of, me or you.”

“Me?” Jaheira scoffed. “The child has no need to fear me.”

“Hmm,” Tybalt responded. “I remember a certain sharp-tongued druid scaring the pants off of me and Imoen when we arrived at the Friendly Arm Inn a few months back.” He grinned at her look of outrage. “No, I didn’t mean it, please don’t punish me!” he joked as he pretended to cower before her. “Y-you’ll m-make me st-start st-stuttering if you keep l-looking at me l-like that,” he continued. “L-like poor Aerie and Kh-”

The slap froze his tongue. Jaheira had begun to smile at his mockery but had immediately stiffened at the mention of her husband. Her arm was raised as if daring him to continue.

Tybalt felt his cheeks redden and he stared at the floor, cursing himself. “I’m sorry,” he began.

“Don’t,” Jaheira stated firmly, then with more control over her voice, said, “I am going to meet with Aerie’s friends before I go to bed. I will see you tomorrow bright and early.” She walked away without looking at him.

“Damn,” he muttered, furious with his careless tongue. Things had definitely changed between them.

I wouldn't cry for her or Ajantis... and I think they really deserve each other.

“Did you miss me while I was gone?” he changed topics suddenly.

“What?” The question had caught her off guard but she was merely stalling to think of how to answer.

Well, she does appreciate directness, doesn't she?

Heh. I have to agree though... right now he does not seem like a man that Jaheira could fall in love... and he has too many issues.

However, before she could follow through on this, Aerie came running up to them. “Oh, good, Jaheira, you’re still up!” She glanced at Tybalt and smiled shyly, though a hint of fear echoed in her eyes. Ergh... enter Haer'Dalis... yuck! :)

Well, like I said... there's some lack of understanding here. Looks like poor Tybalt simple does not know how to handle Jaheira...

The slap froze his tongue. Jaheira had begun to smile at his mockery but had immediately stiffened at the mention of her husband. Her arm was raised as if daring him to continue.

Uh, yes that would have hurt...

“Damn,” he muttered, furious with his careless tongue. Things had definitely changed between them.

Heh... definitely not the right setting for romance, but I guess we'll have to wait. :)

No? You should try asking the common people on the street, if they consider you scary, jaheira. (but thjey wouild probably be too afraid to admit that she is scary).

lol, yes they do. but i'm afraid they might be sticking around for a bit longer...i'll try to make them more lovable, or at least not as annoying as they have the potential to be. but then, what would our characters be if they didn't have the little flaws now and then?

i think she expects people to accept her directness without necessarily wanting it from others. things work strangely in the jaheira universe :)

that's an understatement. hopefully, jae will find better luck with another, and tybalt, too. they're just incompatible now, though that won't immediately ease the pain of separation

hehe, he'll be around for a while, too, so brace yourself for over the top prose and continual bird references

yeah, he's not in the right state of mind now, not that it gives him an excuse to be an ass. and the more he acts like this, the further jaheira will pull away from him :D

and yet romance is afoot, in more than one group member's life. things will be getting steamy pretty soon

yeah, keeping a crazed bhaalspawn in check is hard enough with help. now, she has to work on her own, basically

hehe, boss jaheira. though i haven't really alluded to it much yet, i think that without the friction between aerie and jaheira for tybalt's affections, the two will get along better and maybe...with time...become friends. then jaheira can mother aerie like she wants and aerie can comment on jaheira's hair without fear of reprimand!

true, that. there's not a lot that she'll confess if she doesn't want to

well, she's not going to completely break down, but she does care about tybalt. i don't think the others would begrudge her some emotional time

she can let her emotions out occasionally, though this was more of a lapse of control. i think it's the shock more than anything that makes her explode like this. she certainly wasn't expecting him to act suspicious or ungrateful, which he is a bit, i think

yeah, relations will be strained for a while, but with time, they may heal. some things will never be the same, however.
