Dekaras’ Biography

It certainly isn’t easy to worm information out of the sarcastic and intensely private assassin, and more than once you feel inclined to give up on ever learning anything about his background at all. Clearly he’s very reluctant to discuss it, and outright questions are usually only met by a cool look or a brief comment on the many interesting perils that face the overly curious. And yet, having traveled together for some time, he has allowed you just a little bit closer, and you have managed to piece together a few scraps of information.

Having seen, or rather, not seen him work, it is obvious that he is very skilled in his profession, and enjoys that fact. Even when not in combat or other danger, he moves with a certain nonchalant grace, and steps lightly enough that few will hear him pass. From one or two comments he has made, you understand that he was trained as an assassin from a very early age, raised within a Thayvian Assassin’s Guild, which would account for the way his responses seem almost instinctual rather than learnt when it comes to dealing death. You wonder what manner of family would part with their child in such a fashion, but your tentative questions in that direction are met only with the sort of dark look that has you unconsciously checking that your jugular is still intact, and the flat statement that they are ‘long gone’. Whatever happened to part him from them, you gather it wasn’t pleasant.

You also aren’t entirely certain what brought him to his current position as Edwin’s tutor, but it is clear that the relationship between them goes far beyond the professional. Edwin seems to practically worship him, in a way that you would have thought he couldn’t possibly feel about anybody but himself until not that long ago, and respects him as he does no other member of the party. As for Dekaras, he is obviously very fond of the Red Wizard as well, and despite not hesitating to tell him off whenever he considers it justified you suspect that he would willingly die for his charge, not to mention kill. You privately decide to try to avoid ever giving him a reason to think you plan to hurt Edwin in any way. Somehow you suspect it wouldn’t be good for your health.

Still, despite the clear and mutual devotion between the pair, there is also a thin and barely noticeable undercurrent of sadness. On a couple of occasions you have seen an oddly wistful look in the assassin’s dark eyes as he watches the younger man, and you cannot imagine what it might mean. It does remind you of something though, or perhaps of somebody. One of these days you feel certain you will know what or who, and add another important piece to the complex puzzle that is your closemouthed traveling companion.
Rogues do it from behind.
