This is really some shameless bragging on my part, so if you don't want to read it, that's okay.

You know that chromatic demon on the second level of Watcher's keep? I thought my party would never be able to kill it!

Here's my party: Korgan, Minsc, Jan, Viconia, and Haer'Dalis plus my PC, Eyla Nightshade, elven fighter. She uses Lilarcor.

Anyway, the demon had already beaten Minsc and Korgan up pretty badly, was immune to Jan and Haer's magic, and Viconia was trying to heal Minsc and Korgan. So I had Eyla retreat to the back of the group while M & K held him off, then Eyla used the Rod of Wonder (you know, the one you're only supposed to use when you're really desperate) at the same time Jan used the golem manual to call up a flesh golem.

The rod of Wonder turned the Chromatic Demon to stone, and as my party just stood there, the flesh golem went over and smashed it to bits!

What a stroke of sheer luck, eh?

Not bad!

I simply found that the traditional method of 'smack it 'till it dies' seemed to work for me. Still . . . that proves to the doubters that the Rod of Wonder has its uses!

Pure luck! personally i only use two characters equipped with either bows or crossbows to take it down. Easy peasy

You're not the only onw who can brag

He's quite a beastie ain't he?

Ah, Lillie, I love that sword.

The Rod of Wonder! I bloody love that thing! I had a PnP mage get turned permanently purple once while she was just trying it out.

The rod of Wonder turned the Chromatic Demon to stone, and as my party just stood there, the flesh golem went over and smashed it to bits!

I bet that demon went back the the Abyss and was like, what the heck just happened to me? Oh, those silly mortals did *not* just turn me to stone and bash me with some inferior construct. Just wait a hundred years and I'll show them!!

What a stroke of sheer luck, eh? :)

That's what the Rod of Wonder is (aside from a sexual innuendo waiting to happen) luck on a stick with magic. It takes some serious cojones to use it, but every once and while it'll throw you something and it's like God was smiling on you. ^^

That's got to be one of the neatest victories ever.

Congratulations,
-Blue

Heh, now that was funny... usually I have Jaheira cast Harm and with her excellent Thac0 it usually works and the Chromatic Demon has only 1HP left... dies on the next hit. :)

Or you can be really cheesy and lay down three or four spike traps where he appears... :)

ROTFL! I rather rely on brute force myself, but you phrased it so nicely.

Still . . . that proves to the doubters that the Rod of Wonder has its uses!

I guess it does. Never really used it myself except for to earn gp, but that's interesting.

Luck is the residue of design. :)

That is neat! Thanks for sharing that episode. :)

If you want a real nasty way to get rid of the chromatic demon, there is one trick. It is especially easy if you have the boots of speed or are hasted.

Send all your characters except one into the fire giant room. Then open the cage and when he attacks you, run into the poison chamber and he will follow you. Close the door he came in from, run away and lock the other door after you get out of the room. He will die pretty soon in the room without doing a bit of damage.

I used the "lure it into the poison room" method and the demon died--which was good, because I was having no luck with the "bash at it" method--but I got no XP for it :D . I never thought to check the body; this game, I'll remember to do that!

Sorry to resurrect an ancient topic, but I need to brag now.
I killed Demogorgan with two characters.
I had TDD installed, and had a level 30 Drow Fighter, and a level 31 Ranger, and they kicked demonic ass. Took just over two minutes to kill him.
God damn did I feel good after that...

Demogorgon (both the in-game version and the improved version by Dave Gaider) can be easily killed by solo mages. If you have Aerie in your party, it is almost ridiculously simple and she can kill him alone. For a discussion on how to do it with solo mages, I suggest you look up
http://www.baldurdash.org/journal.html .

For a discussion on how to do it with Aerie, you can take a look at
http://www.gamejag.n..._view=&start=40

It is also possible to do it with solo bards/thieves. Set enough number of spike traps around him and he will die before he completes his opening sentence.
Regards,
Maidros
