The third part of Axelia and Pavel's escape from the Academy. (I finally found a song to fit the chapter!)

Cheers from Fantysm!

"And I salute you for your courage
and I applaud your perseverance
and I embrace you for your faith in the face of adversarial forces
that I represent

and so you felt and you're still here
and so you died and you're still standing
and so you softened and you're still safely in command . . ."

~Alanis Morissette, "Surrendering"

Axelia was lost.

She ran through corridors, wondering if it was her first time through them, until she found the door, sandwiched between the rogue training rooms and the arcane magic laboratories. She pulled it open and swung her kama in front of her.

The monk made a small noise of surprise as the weapon hit something soft. She stepped over the mage's body, trying not to look at the bloody mess she had made of his throat. Axelia took a moment to orient herself.

She had never been in this part of the Academy. It was a warehouse of sorts, with crates, chests, and boxes stacked against the walls and scattered over the floor. She rummaged in some of them, coming up with only a lightweight set of monk's garb. It was a little big on her, obviously made for a human woman, but more room was better than none at all. She approached the door on the opposite side of the storeroom and her ears picked up noise on the other side. Axelia raised her kama and kicked open the door. And stared. The young man staring back was the first to break the silence.

"Thank the gods you're here, Axelia," Pavel said, sighing with relief. "I thought those goblins would be the death of me."

"I have never been more relieved to see someone than I am now," Axelia said, lowering her weapon and moving closer to her friend. "Come on. We have to get out of here."

"We?" Pavel asked. "You mean . . . you're actually letting me come with you?"

"Of course," Axelia said. "What are friends for? Neither of us will get out alive by ourselves. Remember? 'We go together like spikes and leather?' Didn't that mean anything, Pavel?"

Pavel nodded, a small, nostalgic smile as he remembered that phrase they'd made up as thirteen-year-olds. Then it vanished as suddenly as it had come. Bim had been a part of that, too. And now . . . he was dead.

"Bim," he said, a lump forming in his throat. "My brother . . . he didn't make it."

Axelia's brow furrowed in sympathy, and she hugged him. "I'm so sorry."

A goblinoid war-cry from an adjacent room made them both jump.

"C'mon. Let's get out of here," Axelia said, and set off down a hallway with Pavel at her heels.

---

"Take that, you evil creature!" Axelia shrieked, taking the goblin's head off as three more swarmed in to take its place. "And that, and that!"

"Axelia, behind you!" Pavel warned, and took on the goblins she had been fighting as she turned and kicked her would-be assassin sprawling.

"Nice!"

"Thanks!" They spared no more breath on conversation and instead took to dispatching the flock of goblins.

Axelia had just neatly punched a hole into another goblin's skull with her kama when she felt a sharp pain just under her shoulder blade. She turned as she sank to her knees, her eyes meeting that of her assailant. It was a goblinoid mage. The cruel intelligence that shone through its eyes would have been chilling, had Axelia been coherent enough to notice it. As it was, the dagger had been cursed with a fast-acting poison. She fell forward, her body curving gracefully as she hit the floor, already unconscious, into the thinning throng of goblins.

"AXELIA!" Seeing her fall, Pavel seemed to pulse with new energy. The warrior went after the mage first. He had soon chopped his way through the rest of the goblins, barely noticing his own injuries. They seemed insubstantial while Axelia lay dying on the floor.

"No, you can't die, Axelia . . . you can't; I won't let you die on me . . . not like Bim, you can't die like Bim did . . . you're too important to die, Axelia . . ." he muttered. Working quickly, he extracted the dagger from her back and bound a piece of cloth over the wound to stop the bleeding. Pavel pulled a healing potion from his pack and fumbled with the stopper. He forced it down her throat. Then he waited . . . it was agonizing; waiting while someone you liked --- No, Pavel thought, loved. Someone I love --- hung balanced between life and death, at the whim of fate.

Axelia coughed and sat up. "That's horrible stuff," she managed weakly.

Pavel let out the breath he had been holding. "What, the knife or the potion?" he quipped.

"Both," she rasped. Then she turned to the side and violently threw up.

Axelia was lost.

She ran through corridors, wondering if it was her first time through them, until she found the door, sandwiched between the rogue training rooms and the arcane magic laboratories. She pulled it open and swung her kama in front of her.

That's a pretty nightmarish feeling, running like that, not recognizing things you ought to.

The monk made a small noise of surprise as the weapon hit something soft. She stepped over the mage's body, trying not to look at the bloody mess she had made of his throat. Axelia took a moment to orient herself.

Query: How did she know it was an enemy behind the door? For all she knew, it could have been a surviving student or instructor.

"I have never been more relieved to see someone than I am now," Axelia said, lowering her weapon and moving closer to her friend. "Come on. We have to get out of here."

"We?" Pavel asked. "You mean . . . you're actually letting me come with you?"

Does he really think she'll leave him with the monsters?

"Of course," Axelia said. "What are friends for? Neither of us will get out alive by ourselves. Remember? 'We go together like spikes and leather?' Didn't that mean anything, Pavel?"

Pavel nodded, a small, nostalgic smile as he remembered that phrase they'd made up as thirteen-year-olds. Then it vanished as suddenly as it had come. Bim had been a part of that, too. And now . . . he was dead.

Awwww... :)

Awww...so, he's going to take a larger part in this story than in the game. :) Nice twist.

*grin* And I have a feeling she'll get to swallow several more healing potions...
Rogues do it from behind.

I imagine it would be.

Good point. I'll fix that.

Does he really think she'll leave him with the monsters?

Pavel's quite unsure of himself.

Awwww... :x

Poor Bim.

Awww...so, he's going to take a larger part in this story than in the game. Nice twist.

Thank you!

*grin* And I have a feeling she'll get to swallow several more healing potions...

Pavel will most likely force them down her throat.

Yeah. And even if some people have a strange aversion to asking for directions, it's even worse when nobody's around to give you directions.

Sure, why not? :)

Of course, right?

Nice move! :)

Gotta love monks.

Intense scene. Wow...

Thanks!

Good think it wasn't all over Pavel. I could have easily done that, Axelia should thank me. Pavel should too, come to think of it . . . Characters. Always blaming the scribe for everything that goes wrong.
