Rush Of Blood To The Head, part 2.10.

“Oh, this is most joyous news,” Lord Coprith exclaims, having heard our report on the successfully completed mission, “I am saddened to hear about Cernd’s death, he seemed to be such a nice person…”

“Look, Lord Coprith, we have been going on for twenty four hours without sleep… All we want is to head back to the Vyatri’s pub and head for our beds… only one thing… have you prepared the promised reward for us?” I ask barely holding back a yawn.

“Yes, I have indeed,” and he passes us an interestingly looking shield and a small pouch with gold coins, quite small indeed… Seeing the disappointment on my face he quickly adds “But that is not all, friends! Firstly, this evening you are welcome to attend an official celebration to honour your heroic deeds. Secondly, if you’ll take a walk to the main town square, you may be surprised…”

“What is this surprise of yours?” Jaheira asks impatiently.

“Ah… I’m sure you will like it! I spent a lot of time thinking about how to reward you best… with more gold? But what is gold, it comes and goes quickly and there is no satisfaction or reminiscence… but what if I could make your accomplishments immortal? So I called our local sculptor and…”

“So… you are saying that… instead of giving us more gold, you made a statues for us?” I gasp in exasperation.

“Yes, isn’t that marvellous, I knew you will like the idea!” Coprith is simply overjoyed.

“Yes… yes… an excellent idea… now please, excuse us… we need to go and get some rest…” seeing the man’s honest face and his genuine contentment about doing such a good deed, my anger slowly settles down. Still, I feel that it may take too much of a strain to remain civil if the conversation goes on and I wave to my friends to leave Coprith’s office… the money that could have been used to rescue Immy, spent on some stupid statues…

“You showed amazing restraint there,” Jaheira observes as we exit Coprith’s office, “for a second I thought you would lose your patience… you know, that despite the inappropriate manner of expression, his intentions were good and gratitude is genuine.”

“I’m aware of that,” I give a sigh, “it’s just that… perhaps I could give these statues to Bayle instead of gold? Eh, let’s just get back to the tavern… Jan, Yoshimo, no bedtime stories from you today, unless you want to feel my wrath!” but those two just snicker at my threats…

Going to sleep early in the morning is something that we have done many times during our travels, but I still cannot get used to it… after a while I finally sink in an uneasy sleep, rolling around from one side of the bed to the other, hugging and coddling my pillow…

I have no idea how long have I slept, but after awaking I still feel tired. I slowly rise up and sit on the side of the bed; trying to adjust to surroundings… the sun is high in the sky, indicating that it is high noon. A quiet tap on the door startles me and awakens me completely… I know whose customary tap that is – Jaheira’s secret signal form the good, old days…

“Come in,” I speak and looking around the room I realize that Jan and Yoshimo are missing. Jaheira enters the room and stands at the door, grinning mischievously.

“I don’t know where Jan and Yoshimo are, you’ve seen them?” I ask a bit worried.

“They went to look at the Coprith’s sculptors masterpiece… Nalia went with them,” she comes closer to me, grinning all the time, “we have got a half-hour of time… what do you propose we do…”

“Oh, I’m sure we’ll think of something…” I take her hands and pull her closer and eventually we both land on the bed. Just before our lips join in a kiss, I whisper to her, “Just how long we will try to keep this as a secret, dear? I mean, everybody knows, already… well, except for Aerie it seems…”

She turns away for a moment then asks staring me in the eyes “And what do you propose? I am not… ready or willing to discuss our private matters publicly… and whatever is said behind my back does not concern me. I think it would be better to let the things resolve themselves…”

“As you wish,” I sigh, “sorry, for bringing it up… I hope I have not harmed your… appetite…”

A few minutes after, when the world is slowly becoming oblivious to us, another knock on the door interrupts our activities…

“Theodur? Theodur, are you awake?” I know that voice. Aerie. “Please, I know you’re in there, I need to talk with you…” she rambles on, “I wanted to tell you something, but that vicious harpy is always around you and I don’t get a chance to speak to you at all…” she whines. I look at Jaheira and see that she is about to explode from anger and has opened her mouth to shout at Aerie. The only way to shut her up is to press my mouth against hers, so we end up kissing passionately while the Avariel still keeps on talking the other side of the doors.

“Why do you keep her around anyway, I don’t understand… she threatened to kill me yesterday, can you imagine that? Theodur… can I come in?”

“Err… no, NO! I’m not… ready…” I am so embarrassed at this situation, having to get rid of Aerie and at the same time trying to calm down furious Jaheira.

“Oh, I see… I understand, but… that’s not a problem really, I mean…” Aerie stammers, probably ashamed at her own naughty thoughts… and finally I cannot contain Jaheira no more…

“YOU insolent, little wench, I’ll tear you apart, limb from limb,” Jaheira yells, “let me at her! Let me go!” she tries to break away from my grip, but I hold her tightly.

“Eeeeeeek!” a piercing shriek resounds on the other side of the doors as we hear light footsteps quickly disappearing down the hallway.

Jaheira is still trying to break away as I whisper in her ear, “Maybe you could direct your fire and anger to different activities, rather than slaughtering her… perhaps we can resume from the spot where we were, before getting interrupted…” and as incredible as it may seem, she follows my advice…

“Do you think that was the right thing to do?” Nalia asks in a slightly disappointed voice, “Coprith must have been pretty disappointed that the main guests did not even show up for their heroes welcome…”

We are once again marching the now familiar road between Trademeet and Athkatla, five of us walking upfront with Aerie trailing behind, all the time shooting worried glances at Jaheira.

“Probably,” I agree, “he’s a likeable chap - however I’m still sour about that reward business… I didn’t want to test my own patience. Or is it that you just simply wanted to mingle with your own crowd, Nalia?”

“Not, really,” she frowns, “I don’t miss those high-society geeks, I’ve always felt misplaced in those formal festivities… I just thought that we deserve a bit of diversion from our everyday business.”

“You have a point there, Nalia,” I agree, “perhaps, if we have time, we could go to see some theatre play in Athkatla… by the way, speaking of Coprith’s reward – how did you liked the statues?”

I see Nalia, Jan and Yoshimo exchanging uneasy glances… “They were… very nice… not particularly look-alike but this Coprith fellow probably has either a poor visual memory or a very good imagination… ” Yoshimo smirks.

“Indeed,” Jan chimes in, “too bad, Jaheira, that you, for some unknown reason decided not to come with us… you would have enjoyed your impersonation, it was particularly, eh… inspiring…”

“What do you mean by that, gnome?” Jaheira asks, a little irritated by Jan’s provoking tone.

“Well, let’s just say that Coprith’s description of your…” Yoshimo gulps, “chest area… could be considered as very… impressive and flattering…”

“Wh… WHAT?” Jaheira screams, “and where do you think you are going?” she yells at me seeing that I have turned around and am marching in the opposite direction.

“Back to Trademeet. This I got to see with my own eyes,” I can barely contain laughter seeing the desperate anger in her eyes.

“Oh, no you don’t!” she grabs me by the hand and turns me around, “and let this be a warning to any of you! If this topic will be mentioned again, nature’s fury will strike you down, I promise you that!” sadly for her, this outburst does not achieve the desired effect as we all burst into a laughter and after rolling her eyes emphatically, Jaheira finally joins us in the laughter.
