Rush Of Blood To The Head, part 2.1.

It’s been a while since I’ve felt so… happy, I ponder looking at her face – she’s still asleep, her head resting on my shoulder and hand on my chest. I’ve almost forgotten the meaning of the word “happiness”. Waking up beside the woman I love is a brand new experience for me – this is the second morning in a row that I have been blessed with this opportunity. This night had been much more peaceful than the previous – too many tears were shed then and not enough hours were slept…

Bearing in mind her traumatic experience in the dungeon I thought that any kind of physical closeness would be put aside for a while, all though the thought was hard to resist in her presence. I was all the more surprised that she insisted on it last night… not that I would complain, mind you. It had felt… different than in the past. Previously it had been wild and passionate, the possibility of being caught adding a lot of spice to it… last night my caresses were protective and comforting, offering her the solace that she was seeking.

We were planning to leave for Nalia’s keep this morning, and my companions in all likelihood were already waiting for us downstairs, but I did not dare to wake up Jaheira. Nalia had been sorely disappointed with my decision that Jaheira needed another day to fully recover, but in the end she agreed with the decision.

Yesterday I had introduced Jaheira to the members of the party – saying that she was unimpressed would be quite an understatement … She was in a bit of foul mood, as she had to walk around unarmed since her equipment had “mysteriously” vanished. She had pestered me with questions on this matter for a while, until she gave up. “I probably would not want to know,” she had snorted… Obviously, as she was not a woman of a huge stature, she half relied on her armor and weaponry to look even more intimidating – having to face her would-be party members and being improperly dressed annoyed her to no end. Obviously a trip to Rybald’s store fixed that problem, later.

“Who is going to change her diapers?” she referred to Aerie “well, not me… I suggest sending this child back home” making the poor Avariel almost break out in tears.

I did not like the look she gave Yoshimo, there was something darker than her usual glare… she clearly disliked the man. Jaheira did not remember him from our meeting in dungeon, she was still unable or unwilling to recall anything what happened on our way out of the dungeon…

Nalia received only a minor frown and was quite relieved at that… “I hope that you are more useful than you look,” was Jaheira’s comment.

Jan was wise enough to save his story for a better time, but I warned Jaheira about this habit of his. “He’s got a magical leather armor with an enchantment – casts Jan Jansen tale three times per hour…” was my comment. Jaheira only snorted something along the lines “… I shall pray to Silvanus for extra silencing spells…”

Later, when we had returned from our shopping trip and were taking an afternoon’s rest in her room, she expressed her displeasure at my party-forming skills…

“What in the blazes have you been thinking – that I will be coddling these children? I mean, look at that elf girl… what… why? Explain, please that to me…”

“Well, she knows a bit of a magic and she can heal as well… I am not thrilled as well, but her… eh, her uncle was so persistent…”

“Uncle??? Simply because her “uncle was persistent”? That young noble and the silly gnome could easily cover our needs for magical support and I always thought that I could heal. Or were you already looking for replacement?”

Ouch. That was a slap in the face, as I turn away from her gaze so that she does not see the pain in my eyes…

“I… I am sorry… that was inappropriate…” she squeezes my hand, reaches closer and gives me a quick kiss on the lips. “Better?” she asks with a slightly apologetic smile…

“Think nothing of it,” I smile back at her “it’s just… it brought back some memories… thoughts that I was going through while you were… I had some moments of doubt… I really want to put those days behind…”

“I am sorry for bringing that up, then,” she gives me another kiss, this one lasting slightly longer…

“What about Yoshimo? You sure gave him a ferocious glare…”

“I am not sure,” she winces slightly “it is like… like I have met him before… but I cannot recall where…”

“But of course, we met him on our way out from… you know… down there…”

“Hmm… yes, yes, that must be it… odd… no, must be my imaginations…” she sinks deep in her thoughts “no, you must be right, just that my memory is still a bit fuzzy…”

“That’s perfectly understandable,” I try to reassure her.

“Still, there is one tiny problem that our fearless leader has managed to overlook in forming of the party,” she proudly declares.

“I wonder what that could be?”

“Well, as you know I have enough experience as a hand-to-hand fighter, but we cannot hope to prevail with such obvious lack of other capable fighters in our group… It pains me to admit it, but I cannot perform in this role without support and this… Yoshimo hardly seems to be the type… There is a degree of trust necessary to function efficiently.”

“I’m well aware of that, my fearsome lioness…”

“And what do you intend to do about it, my impossible sweet-talker?”

“That’s easy. I managed to come across the sword that belonged to my beloved brother…”

“You cannot possibly mean… I need you to cover my back – I have grown used to it… Besides, you do not even know how to use a sword, you are an archer may I remind you!”

“Well, I do know how to use a two-hander... and I’ve got a lot of practice… of making hay when I was younger…”

“YOU… you are absolutely insane! And you are even making jokes about it!” and finally Jaheira is totally furious…

Afterwards my friends told me that her yelling could be heard from the other side of Promenade…

A knock on the door pulls me out of my reverie, as I hear Nalia’s impatient voice “Theodur! Theodur, I apologize, but we should really be on the road… we’ve been waiting for more than an hour for you!”

“Err… yes, I’ll be downstairs in a moment…” I see Jaheira stirring beside me and I hope that she would remain silent.

“Good. I’ll go fetch Jaheira then,” Nalia adds in determined voice.

“NO! Go downstairs and wait, I’ll wake her myself,” I signal Jaheira, who is completely awake by now, to keep quiet.

“O-okay,” Nalia responds and I hear her footsteps disappearing down the stairs.

“Quickly, get dressed, we’re already behind the schedule,” I tell Jaheira in an all business-like voice.

“What, straight to the business, no good morning greetings at all?” she whimpers theatrically.

“Look, we really don’t have much time… Nalia almost got us there… ah, to hell with her!” and I hug Jaheira, whispering in her ear “thank you for last night… you were wonderful… but now we really should go…”

The sun is already high upon the horizon as we leave the walls of Athkatla behind… de’Arnise keep awaits us.
