bah, been deprived of intenet for a spell. At least exams are done. This part had a bit of a dillema as I had originally made it part of a larger one, but I thought I'd split things up a bit more. Now to catch up on my reading....

Talek woke up to a bucket of cold water poured over his face. His eyes shot open and he looked up at the ceiling of the hallway with a dazed look. Imoen was twirling a bucket around her finger and looking down at him with an amused expression.

“ezgllluuuh?” He managed.

“Good morning to ya too orc-brain. Been a while since I got to do this.” She grinned. “Are you gonna get up or should I get another bucket of water?”

Talek groaned and got himself up to a sitting position, clutching his head. “Yes...for drinking... throat’s a dessert.” Talek seemed to have gone through great pain to procure those words from his still half-asleep mind.

“Ah, so he’s woken up. What in Silvanus’ name were you THINKING getting yourself drunk like this? Have you forgotten we have to go to Beregrost today? The Coast Road is dangerous in normal times, and you think you can face them recovering from a stupor while they’re practically under siege? Do you have anything to say for yourself?”

Talek turned his face to the irate druid that had appeared next to Imoen. He blinked twice. “Euh....what was that after Silvanus...?”

Imoen chuckled. “Better use simple sentences Jaheira. When he’s hung over his mind continues to sleep it off even if the body is walking.” Talek was still sitting on the floor staring off into space, eyes already closing a bit.

Jaheira sighed “I had hoped to let him stew in it for a while, but I guess we need all of his mental capacities.” She placed her hands on his temples and spoke some words in a strange language. Talek’s eyes shot open.

“Hey....wow.... I’m awake. Thanks Jaheira.” He got up energetically, stretching his muscles that were stiff from sleeping on the wooden floor.

“I purified the poison in your body. You should drink plenty of water.” her voice then turned hard. “and the next time, if I see you getting drunk, I will personally put a vomitory in your drink.”

Talek looked questioningly at Imoen who rolled her eyes. “She means she’ll give you something to throw up.”

He grinned. “Better make sure you don’t see me getting drunk then. Hey, can you get Montaron one of those too? I mean, I never thought I’d be drunk under the table by a halfling but, man...”

Jaheira opened her mouth to say something when a voice came from behind her. “Ye worry about yer own head boy” Montaron had said those words in a loud voice, and clearly instantly regretted it. He was looking at the world at large as if he wanted it to die right there and then. “Just leave me be for the next hours and I’ll be over it without any throats gettin’ slit.”

“Goooooood mooooorning.” Xzar declared with a loud, deep voice, walking up the stairs, coming behind Montaron. He looked even more cheerful then usual. “There’s nothing like a night in a former temple of the Lord of Murder after spending some time on the road.” He ignored the murderous stares of the halfling and patted him on the back.

Talek raised his hand in greeting. “So, when’s breakfast?”

“Khalid is arranging it. Should be ready in about ten minutes.” Jaheira said.

“Right, I’ve got the time for some cleaning up then.” Talek walked in his room and came out with a small jar. “They got to have a rain barrel here somewhere.”

“If you don’t mind I’ll walk with you. There are some things I would speak about with you.” Imoen seemed to sense the undertone in her voice and ran off with an excuse. Jaheira and Talek walked outside.

“So... what were you and Montaron doing all night?” Jaheira started. “Nothing more foolish then getting drunk I hope.”

“Oh no... We were just talking about all the stuff that happened yesterday, about Xzar. After a couple of drinks I think we started to swap jokes. But I can’t really remember much of them. All I know is I didn’t get most of his.” They had reached a barrel with water, still cold from the early spring air. Talek dunked his head in it for a few seconds and then whipped it out. “Oh yeah, now I’m awake.”

“Talek, I would like to talk to you on the subject of Montaron and Xzar.” She breathed deeply. “I think it would be better if we didn’t travel with them.”

“What?” Talek seemed shocked. “Why would we do that? We’re heading the same way.”

“They are not trustworthy Talek. Even IF we ignore the necromancer, what do you know about them? Their motives? It seems clear enough they are not the type to look into the iron crisis from the goodness of their heart. For all you know they could be involved with Gorion’s murder.”

Talek scowled and poured a small amount of paste that smelled strongly of herbs on his hands and started rubbing it in his hair. “I don’t know anything except that they offered us help when Candlekeep didn’t. If it hadn’t been for them we’d probably never have made it to the Friendly Arm.”

“Have you considered their motives for helping you might be less then pure?”

Talek shrugged. “I don’t know about their motives. They can tell me about those when they feel like it. But they’re going after the people that caused this iron crisis too, and so after Gorion’s murderer. They’re on OUR side.” His hands were rubbing over his black hair, his face growing grim as he spoke.

“Some people you may not WANT on your side, child.”

Talek’s hands froze on that last word. “Please...don’t call me that.”

Jaheira raised her eyebrows. “Why? If you ask me, your irresponsible behaviour...”

“Only Gorion called me that okay?” Talek snapped “You can call me ‘boy’, ‘lad’... ‘long-haired sword-for-brains’ but not ‘child.’”

Jaheira seemed taken aback for a moment. “Very well... Talek. I did not know the word had special meaning.”

“It’s all right. You couldn’t know.” He dunked his head in the barrel again, rinsing off his hair. “And look, I’ll keep an eye on them. But they helped us when we needed them, and made a detour to the Friendly Arm so we could collect you. I can’t just tell them to push off. Besides, they’re not so bad. You just got off on the wrong foot, right?”

“Hmmm” the druid answered neutrally “I’ll keep an eye on them too. However, I still think this is a bad idea.” She was silent for a moment. The subject had been closed. “How was Gorion... before he died?”

Talek leaned on the barrel. “He was happy as usual I guess. Imoen said he looked pale and worried, but I’m not really good at noticing stuff like that.”

Jaheira nodded. “Did he mention any kind of unusual information?”

“Huh... no...” Talek’s brow furrowed in concentration. “But he did say he had something to tell us when we met up.” He looked at the druid questioningly. “Why do you ask? Dis you expect something?”

Jaheira hesitated a moment before speaking. “Since Gorion seemed to have planned to tell you what he knew I assume I can tell you something more. Tell me first, do you remember anything from before Gorion adopted you?”

“No, no a thing. Some vague stuff about travelling a lot and then Candlekeep.”

She sighed. “I’ve known Gorion for some time. While I was training as a druid he would often send letters to me, and I would write back. One day, I was still rather young, Gorion announced that he had adopted you, shortly after his last adventure in the south. I don’t know the details about it. Gorion seemed rather set on raising you as his son. Many of Gorion’s friends disagreed with this.”

Talek chuckled bitterly “Heh, well something hasn’t changed in all these years then.”

“I’ve tried to find out more about why he had adopted you, but those that knew were frustratingly secretive. Even when I became more involved with Gorion’s friends and could meet Gorion himself, noone would tell me, and even Gorion said it was too dangerous to say. I had given up on finding out for a while. When I travelled, first alone and later with Khalid, we couldn’t meet quite as regularly. But after we uncovered some slave-trader in Athkatla, we got a letter from Gorion. He asked us to come north, to the Friendly Arm Inn as soon as possible and that he would explain things there. I looked forward to seeing him again.” Her hands were clenched into fists and she was staring holes in the wall. Talek was still leaning on the barrel with a dark expression on his face. “But enough talk. It is sad when the dead take the living with them.”

“Not always.” Talek almost snarled. “It’ll be a bloody HAPPY occasion when I send the Ilmater-forsaken refuse who killed Gorion to the abyss.”

“Calm yourself ch... Talek” Jaheira corrected herself. “We will need cool heads to succeed.” She was entirely calm now. “And full stomachs. Let us eat breakfast and then leave for Beregrost.”

Talek just nodded.

“Good morning to ya too orc-brain. Been a while since I got to do this.” She grinned. “Are you gonna get up or should I get another bucket of water?”

Btw, is Talek a half-orc? Or human? I seem to have forgot... acts like a half-orc, that's for sure.

Hehe... I wish I had such powers to remove intoxication... no, make it - I wish I had a lover with powers like that

Interesting conversation. Don't think that Jaheira will be able to convince Talek of Xzar's and Monty's evil motives. Even if she knew for sure that they are Zhents, Talek's reply would only be... 'so what?'

Btw, I kept K&J and X&M in my latest BG1 party and waited when the Harpers are finally going to paste those two, but it just didn't happen... in the end I fed Xzar and Monty to Drizzt as a bait... tough luck...

She sighed. “I’ve known Gorion for some time. While I was training as a druid he would often send letters to me, and I would write back. Heh, so in your continuity they haven't even travelled together - makes sense as you said that your Khalid and Jaheira are rather unexperienced.

Aw, poor Jaheira... I always thought that K&J have absolutely zero idea about PC's background (being one of the children), only that he is 'special' in some way.

Talek just nodded.

Hmm. Entertaining as usual. It's taking them ages to move out of FAI, though... :)

Nah, 100% human...well... not really but... As human as Theodur. But hey, can't humans be dim-witted and violent. Might have been interesting to have made him a half orc though.

Jaheira sighed “I had hoped to let him stew in it for a while, but I guess we need all of his mental capacities.” She placed her hands on his temples and spoke some words in a strange language. Talek’s eyes shot open.

Yep, not just for the hangover, but for removing the.... bad effect alcohol has on potence.

Probably, although he would be angry at them for hiding it from him. Then again, Jaheira and Khalid haven't said they're Harpers either.

Btw, I kept K&J and X&M in my latest BG1 party and waited when the Harpers are finally going to paste those two, but it just didn't happen... in the end I fed Xzar and Monty to Drizzt as a bait... tough luck...

Actually, in a game of mine it's Xzar that suddenly gets an epiphany, realises they're Harpers, and attacks them. He sounds pretty scary as he gets angry at them. He died quickly though.

She sighed. “I’ve known Gorion for some time. While I was training as a druid he would often send letters to me, and I would write back. Yep, I'm a bit worried about the years thing. I'd put Jaheira at about 27 perhaps, and Talek at about 20. (which means Jaheira has little experience for her age, but it workd.

“I’ve tried to find out more about why he had adopted you, but those that knew were frustratingly secretive. Yep, had they known some things would go differently. As it is, they're heading to push some of tyhe wrong buttons.

Talek just nodded.

Hmm. Entertaining as usual. It's taking them ages to move out of FAI, though... :)

That is why I considered putting the other part of this chapter with it, but then I'd have another big chapter. Next chapter we're on the way to Beregrost though. And there'll be some actual ACTION too.

Thanks for reading and reviewing.

Heh, just hope she doesn't do that to Monty as well - doubt he'd appreciate it.

Talek groaned and got himself up to a sitting position, clutching his head. “Yes...for drinking... throat’s a dessert.” Talek seemed to have gone through great pain to procure those words from his still half-asleep mind.

'desert' :) . Poor Talek - but considering they probably have to be on the road soon, he needs to wake up quickly.

That's a useful spell to know :-)

“I purified the poison in your body. You should drink plenty of water.” her voice then turned hard. “and the next time, if I see you getting drunk, I will personally put a vomitory in your drink.”

Oh, give him a break. You're only young once.

Talek raised his hand in greeting. “So, when’s breakfast?”

He actually thinks he can stomach breakfast? Jaheira's spell must have been a good one.

That's probably the one way he can stop her calling him that - just moaning about it probably wouldn't work.

“Not always.” Talek almost snarled. “It’ll be a bloody HAPPY occasion when I send the Ilmater-forsaken refuse who killed Gorion to the abyss.”

LOL!

Nice chapter :-)

 Good morning.

Not THAT good.

'Sorry mommy'

That's what Imoen would say. If Imoen regularly got drunk.

Heyyy, that's a neat trick.

And THAT'S why you need a druid or cleric in the party. Healing wounds? Resurecting? It's all about curing hangovers!

Not the brightest of people.

Yep, on the bright side, he doesn't PRETEND to be smart.

“Oh no... We were just talking about all the stuff that happened yesterday, about Xzar. After a couple of drinks I think we started to swap jokes. But I can’t really remember much of them. All I know is I didn’t get most of his.” They had reached a barrel with water, still cold from the early spring air. “Talek, I would like to talk to you on the subject of Montaron and Xzar.” She breathed deeply. “I think it would be better if we didn’t travel with them.”

The are not the most trustworthy of folks.

But Talek has problem recognising things as 'hating each other to the point of almost killing each other', so good luck making him recognise 'trustworthiness'

Let's hope he's right.

Yeah right, the way is free now for the Xzar/Jaheira romance.

“Not always.” Talek almost snarled. “It’ll be a bloody HAPPY occasion when I send the Ilmater-forsaken refuse who killed Gorion to the abyss.”

Ahhh.

Talek is not a very forgiving person.

Good story

Ah right. As I have no internet at home I'm using public computers and just downloading the thing, so I've never forked over the 20$ either. (where would I install it?) I assume the other people on the forum just happily download it again when the evaluation period is finnished. Ah well...

Heh, just hope she doesn't do that to Monty as well - doubt he'd appreciate it.

She'd learn a lot of interesting new words. Luckily I doubt whether Montaron would be able to go for her throat without whimpering about his head.

Talek groaned and got himself up to a sitting position, clutching his head. “Yes...for drinking... throat’s a dessert.” Talek seemed to have gone through great pain to procure those words from his still half-asleep mind.

GAH, and I was hesitating and then I got sure it was two s-es. Blast that word!

Luckily for Talek, Jaheira's tirade is mostly just 'weird sound' at the moment.

Jaheira? Giving people a break? Never. That's why we love her.

Talek raised his hand in greeting. “So, when’s breakfast?”

He actually thinks he can stomach breakfast? Jaheira's spell must have been a good one.

Yep, and Talek has a largeappetite. All that swordfighting burns calories.

That's probably the one way he can stop her calling him that - just moaning about it probably wouldn't work.

It's also the main reason he asks her to stop. Talek has little qualms over a little insulting among friends.

“Not always.” Talek almost snarled. “It’ll be a bloody HAPPY occasion when I send the Ilmater-forsaken refuse who killed Gorion to the abyss.”

LOL!

Nice chapter

Thanks, and thanks for the review.

bah, been deprived of intenet for a spell. At least exams are done. This part had a bit of a dillema as I had originally made it part of a larger one, but I thought I'd split things up a bit more. Now to catch up on my reading....

Hope your exams went well.

Not bad, except history and Latin. Results out thursday. Mostly afraid of my lesson-preparations papers.

Talek woke up to a bucket of cold water poured over his face. His eyes shot open and he looked up at the ceiling of the hallway with a dazed look. Imoen was twirling a bucket around her finger and looking down at him with an amused expression.

“ezgllluuuh?” He managed.

LOL! That's exactly the sort of thing Immy would do.

Aye, and I think a certain tattooed elf would be able to confirm that.

One prime quality Jaheira tongue lashing, wasted.

“I purified the poison in your body. You should drink plenty of water.” her voice then turned hard. “and the next time, if I see you getting drunk, I will personally put a vomitory in your drink.”

Ah, clever!

The healing or the vomitory?

“Some people you may not WANT on your side, child.”

Talek’s hands froze on that last word. “Please...don’t call me that.”

Jaheira raised her eyebrows. “Why? If you ask me, your irresponsible behaviour...”

“Only Gorion called me that okay?” Talek snapped “You can call me ‘boy’, ‘lad’... ‘long-haired sword-for-brains’ but not ‘child.’”

Awww...

Talek is REALLY sensitive on that subject.

Talek leaned on the barrel. “He was happy as usual I guess. Imoen said he looked pale and worried, but I’m not really good at noticing stuff like that.”

Poor Talek isn't too observant in general, I think.

Heh, I have some nice plans when he meets up with a certain Red Wizard.

Can't wait! And I'm sure the Harper/Zhent conflict is far from over...

No it isn't, and Talek (and to a degree) Imoen are the prize in their little contest.

And thanks for reading and reviewing.
