Disclaimer: Involves romance between two men, but then if you’ve read this far, you’ve probably realised that by now.

Kane: Only of course it’s not really two men at this point, is it? All because of that stupid Nether Scroll…

The Nether Scroll Disaster: Part 2

Standing in front of him, in the middle of the well-decorated room, was a woman. A very attractive woman…who actually looked quite a bit like Edwin. She was his height and very curvy, with rather large breasts, long ebony hair that tumbled around her shoulders and full red lips. Her robe was torn in two or three places, more notably around the chest area and down by the hips. She certainly was very beautiful, although nowhere near as attractive as his Edwin. For a second he was confused, who was the woman and where was Edwin, but then he remembered what Edwin had said a moment or two before and his eyes widened as he realised whom the woman was.

“Eddie?” Although it was pretty obvious what had happened, Kane still couldn’t quite bring himself to believe it. “Is that you?”

“Of course it is me, you idiot!” the woman snapped. “Who else would it be?”

“Well it’s certain Edwin in spirit, if not in body,” Kane smirked slightly, but that soon faded when the reality of the situation hit him. He paced up and down the floor several times, struggling to find something to say.

“I thought you said that you had done something worse than turning yourself into a lich,” he said finally. Edwin glared at him.

“This is far worse than being a lich!” she insisted. “If I were a lich, at least I would have gained more power. All that scroll has given me is this horrible shape…”

“It’s not that bad,” Kane interrupted. “I might not know that much about magic, but I do know that the consequences could have been far worse…”

“It doesn’t get much worse than this!”

“It could have killed you,” the warrior said patiently. “Or you might have ended up turned into a chicken or a carrion crawler or something horrible like that. Or what if it had completely taken away all of your magic and left you powerless.”

“This is all that lich’s fault!” Edwin was slowly becoming hysterical now and the last thing Kane wanted to do was deal with a hysterical female. “I followed the instructions perfectly…I don’t understand what went wrong!”

Maybe the fact that you didn’t translate it properly, Kane thought to himself, but he didn’t say it out loud. Edwin was already distressed enough without being reminded of that, at least just then.

“Even the best of wizards can make mistakes,” he said gently. “There must be some way to reverse it, and until we find out, just look on the bright side. At least you are still very attractive. And alive.”

“But it feels wrong!” Her voice trembled a little and she gazed at him pleadingly. “You have to help me find a way to get rid of this…this body I have been cursed with! Kane, you have to do something! I cannot stay like this!”

“I know little about magic,” Kane reached for his lover’s hand, taking it in his own and squeezing it reassuringly. The wizard flinched a little at his touch but didn’t pull away. “But I promise you that we will find a way to return you to your male form, no matter what it takes. You make a very desirable female, but I don’t think your family will be keen on the idea of having a daughter instead of a son. And I certainly don’t want them to start blaming me.”

“Teacher Dekaras wouldn’t blame you,” Edwin wiped at her eyes, brushing away the tears before Kane could see them. “He’d say that it was my own fault for messing with magic that I don’t understand. And he’d be right, wouldn’t he?”

“It’s no one’s fault,” the warrior shook his head, unsure of what to say next. His first instinct was to hold his lover, try to comfort him with actions, but he sensed that it wouldn’t be a good idea just then. Edwin was still upset over the change and uncertain about his, or her, new body and would most likely push him away. “It’s just one of those things. I’ll go and get Benny, he’ll know how to deal with it.”

“No!” Edwin said immediately. “No…I don’t want him to see me like this. I don’t want anyone to see me like this!”

“Well they are going to have to sooner or later, Eddie. You can’t stay in here forever. And you don’t know, maybe Benny will be able to help. He knows more about magic than I do. Just wait here, I’ll be right back.”

***********
“Edwin did what?” Benny stared at Kane, barely able to believe what he had just been told. “He cast the Nether Scroll and you just let him do it?”

“Well what else could I do?” The warrior asked. “Eddie can be a right stubborn bastard when it comes to anything even remotely magical. I tried to warn him, persuade him to wait until he had translated it properly, but he wouldn’t even listen to me.”

“I know that it isn’t your fault,” Benny stepped around Kane, brushing the Bhaalspawn’s shoulder affectionately as he did. “Vadrak did warn me that Edwin could be very stubborn and more than a little foolish when it comes to magical items, especially those of great power. I never should have let him have that Nether Scroll in the first place.”

“He would have found some way to get at it, no matter what you had done with it,” Kane said at once. “And besides, when all is said and done it was Edwin who choose to cast it, despite being warned more than once. You weren’t to know what would happen.”

“No, I suppose not…” the shapeshifter fell silent for a moment before suddenly realising something. “Come to think of it, you never told me exactly what has happened. It hasn’t killed him or anything has it?”

“No, he’s still very much alive,” Kane sighed; knowing that Benny’s reaction to Edwin’s change was not going to be good. “Although whether that is a good or a bad thing is apparently open to debate.”

“Excuse me?”

“I think,” the warrior sighed and ran a hand through his black hair, “that you had better come and see for yourself. But be prepared, it’ll probably be quite a shock.”

*********
A few minutes later, Edwin and Kane were sitting on their bed, while Benny walked up and down the room, muttering something about foolish and stupid children under his breath. When he had first seen Edwin’s new figure, he had gone several shades paler than usual and had been temporarily lost for a words. After a couple of moments of stunned silence, he finally found his voice again, only to lose his temper at the same time. He had hurled several rather violent curses at Edwin before finally calming down enough to talk normally. By then Edwin was the one who had turned pale and Kane looked absolutely stunned. His teacher so rarely lost his temper that even he was frightened when he did.

“I’m sorry,” the shapeshifter said finally, after he had finished his muttering. “I didn’t mean to lose my temper with you, Edwin, but seeing your new form was quite a shock. I promised your teacher that I would keep an eye on you…and now look at you. What a disaster!”

“It’s all right,” Edwin’s voice was a little shaky. “I don’t blame you for being angry, I think I deserved it. This is my fault, but I can’t stay like this! Please Benny, you must know some way to return me to my male form!”

“What about the Nether Scroll?” Kane asked, remembering what had started the whole mess. “Isn’t there some way to reverse it in there?”

“Probably,” Edwin agreed and then gestured to a pile of ashes on the floor. “But it has gone, it was destroyed in the ritual.”

“So that isn’t any use,” Benny said quietly, resuming his pacing. He reached into his tunic and drew out one of his hidden daggers, which he twirled between his fingers as he walked up and down. Occasionally he glanced over at Kane and Edwin, knowing that they were relying on him to come up with a solution. “We could always try and find a cure down in the library. Or failing that, maybe one of the temples in Athkatla will be able to help.”

“I’m not going out like this!” Edwin said at once. “Everyone will laugh! (Especially Viconia and those filthy dwarves…I can just see their faces now!)”

“You’ll have to face them sooner or later,” Kane said patiently. “Better that it’s sooner.”

“Kane’s right,” Benny agreed. “Come on, Edwin. Let’s just get it over with. And then we’ll go the library and see if there are any books there that can help us out of this mess.”

Next Part: The search to turn Edwin back begins, but not before certain party members do their best to make him feel bad, Cory seeks some advice regarding his love life and Benny receives a rather unwelcomed letter.

Rini: Yeah...she's just lovely. But I also prefer Eddie in his male form, especially since he's so unhappy in his current state. Hey Kane, maybe you and I should form a support group? 'Distraught Lovers of Gender Challenged Red Wizards' or something.

*grin* Hysterical males aren't any better, trust me.

“Even the best of wizards can make mistakes,” he said gently. “There must be some way to reverse it, and until we find out, just look on the bright side. At least you are still very attractive. And alive.”

Vadrak Dekaras: *sigh* So true. He's always been like that. I dread the day when he finally gets hold of a demon summoning scroll without me there to rein him in.

*grin* I'd say that Dekkie's reaction will be pretty memorable as well...

Hmm, I think that Edwina is more attractive than Edwin... but then, that's just me.

“Eddie?” Although it was pretty obvious what had happened, Kane still couldn’t quite bring himself to believe it. “Is that you?”

Don't think you can call her *Eddie* anymore...

“I know little about magic,” Kane reached for his lover’s hand, taking it in his own and squeezing it reassuringly. The wizard flinched a little at his touch but didn’t pull away. “But I promise you that we will find a way to return you to your male form, no matter what it takes. As I remember that one of the problems with Edwin's family was that Elvira would be very annoyed of she didn't have any grandchildren... hmm, she couldn't raise that as an argument now :)

“Well they are going to have to sooner or later, Eddie. You can’t stay in here forever. And you don’t know, maybe Benny will be able to help. He knows more about magic than I do. Just wait here, I’ll be right back.”

Besides, Benny knows a little about... shapeshifting... :)

“No, he’s still very much alive,” Kane sighed; knowing that Benny’s reaction to Edwin’s change was not going to be good. “Although whether that is a good or a bad thing is apparently open to debate.”

Doesn't he find Edwina attractive? Really? REALLY?

“I’m sorry,” the shapeshifter said finally, after he had finished his muttering. “I didn’t mean to lose my temper with you, Edwin, but seeing your new form was quite a shock. I promised your teacher that I would keep an eye on you…and now look at you. What a disaster!”

Well, that's no way to compliment a woman, Benny...

Edwin was definately cuter when he was a man.

“Eddie?” Although it was pretty obvious what had happened, Kane still couldn’t quite bring himself to believe it. “Is that you?”

“Of course it is me, you idiot!” the woman snapped. “Who else would it be?”

Yup, it's definately Edwin :).

“I thought you said that you had done something worse than turning yourself into a lich,” he said finally. Edwin glared at him.

Personally, I'd rather be turned into a female than a lich, but I might be a little biased considering I am female :).

“It could have killed you,” the warrior said patiently. “Or you might have ended up turned into a chicken or a carrion crawler or something horrible like that. Or what if it had completely taken away all of your magic and left you powerless.”

LOL :P A chicken? Reminds me of that quest in BG1.

“This is all that lich’s fault!” Edwin was slowly becoming hysterical now and the last thing Kane wanted to do was deal with a hysterical female. “I followed the instructions perfectly…I don’t understand what went wrong!”

Of coarse, it's always the lich's fault :(.

“Teacher Dekaras wouldn’t blame you,” Edwin wiped at her eyes, brushing away the tears before Kane could see them. “He’d say that it was my own fault for messing with magic that I don’t understand. And he’d be right, wouldn’t he?”

Yes..I believe he would be. :)

Not as much of a shock as it was to Edwin.

“Probably,” Edwin agreed and then gestured to a pile of ashes on the floor. “But it has gone, it was destroyed in the ritual.”

Well, if they don't reverse it I'm sure he/she will get used to it eventually :(.

“I’m not going out like this!” Edwin said at once. “Everyone will laugh! (Especially Viconia and those filthy dwarves…I can just see their faces now!)”

Heh, I can just hear thier comments :(. Poor Edwin (or should I say Edwina).

I like this. Can't wait to read the next part :).
Crazy? I used to be crazy. Then they put me in a white room. Then I died then they put me in a box with worms. Worms drive me crazy.

Kane: Now that is a good idea. I could really use a group like that right now.

Benny: And while you are at it, maybe Dekaras and I should form one too. A support group for all teachers whose students are driving them mad with worry!

“This is all that lich’s fault!” Edwin was slowly becoming hysterical now and the last thing Kane wanted to do was deal with a hysterical female. “I followed the instructions perfectly…I don’t understand what went wrong!”

I'll trust you on that one...I don't really have any desire to find out for myself. :P

Of course he would. Edwin may have made a stupid mistake, but that doesn't mean that he should have to suffer for the rest of his life.

“I know that it isn’t your fault,” Benny stepped around Kane, brushing the Bhaalspawn’s shoulder affectionately as he did. “Vadrak did warn me that Edwin could be very stubborn and more than a little foolish when it comes to magical items, especially those of great power. Definitely. Although Kane probably doesn't realise how bad Edwin feels about this - it's the kind of thing that wouldn't seem so bad until it happened to you.

“This is all that lich’s fault!” Edwin was slowly becoming hysterical now and the last thing Kane wanted to do was deal with a hysterical female. “I followed the instructions perfectly…I don’t understand what went wrong!”

Stop being so stereotypical, Kane - hysterical females are no worse than hysterical males

Maybe the fact that you didn’t translate it properly, Kane thought to himself, but he didn’t say it out loud. Edwin was already distressed enough without being reminded of that, at least just then.

No, that's definitely not a good thing to say unless he's looking for a magic missile in his face.

“Teacher Dekaras wouldn’t blame you,” Edwin wiped at her eyes, brushing away the tears before Kane could see them. “He’d say that it was my own fault for messing with magic that I don’t understand. And he’d be right, wouldn’t he?”

His first instinct was to hold his lover, try to comfort him with actions, but he sensed that it wouldn’t be a good idea just then. Neither Benny nor Kane are doing a very good job of making Edwin feel better about all this...

Yep - Cory will probably be sympathetic, but Vic and the dwarves are going to enjoy this

Nice chapter
