Ryan Brady was introduced to Dungeons & Dragons and role playing games when he was in junior high school back in 1985, but it wasn't until the release of Baldur's Gate in 1998 that he made the jump into the exciting world of CRPGs (well, there was Diablo, but that doesn't count). Since then, he has played through every Infinity Engine game at least two or three times and has recently taken to writing short stories based on these games.

In real life, Ryan is a software quality assurance consultant living in Denver, Colorado. When he's not making a vain and futile attempt to convince upper-management of the necessity of implementing proper software testing methodologies, Ryan enjoys playing the piano, cross-country running, camping, backpacking, and pretty much anything else that involves being outdoors in the beautiful Rocky Mountains with his friends and being as far away from work as possible.

You Took The Words Right Out Of My Mouth...

One of the most entertaining aspects of Shadows of Amn is the interaction and banter that goes on between your various party members. Sometimes its humorous, sometimes its serious, but the end result is the same. It gives each of the characters a unique personality and makes them truly come alive and appear as more than just a set of pixels on your monitor or statistics on a character sheet.

Here's your chance to put yourself into the role of one of the designers at Bioware. If you were in charge of writing NPC dialogs, what would you put in? Is there a particular conversation you would like to have see between two NPCs or between an NPC and the protagonist? Would you like to have seen a different romance, or different conversations within an existing romance? Would you like to have had a different option within a particular encounter or quest, or seen a particular encounter scripted in an entirely different manner? And this doesn't have to apply strictly to Shadows of Amn--Baldur's Gate, Planescape: Torment, and even Icewind Dale are fair game too.

Keep in mind that the idea here isn't to write a full narrative story as we've done in previous quizzes. You're writing actual dialog for the NPCs that would appear in the text window at the bottom of the game screen (i.e. little to no narrative text). So, you'll have to convey emotions, inflection, and body language purely through the NPCs' own words. A little more challenging, but certainly a fun change of pace. Of course, that's just a suggestion. Feel free to post in any style you prefer. And, as always, off-topic posts are welcome too.

Who knows, maybe some of the gang from Bioware will even stop by to get a little inspiration for the "hypothetical" BG2 expansion pack. And if we're lucky, we might just see a few celebrity guest appearances from some of the NPCs themselves. Edwin's been hanging around the board for the past few weeks, Imoen recently made a brief appearance, and rumor has it that Minsc is wanting to stop by once he replaces that modem cable on his PC that Boo chewed through.
