Chapter 79

The Helm and Cloak was reasonably quiet, it being only early afternoon, with little more than a handful of people sitting and talking. There was no sign of Kane or any of his group, but when Emma and Sol-leks ventured upstairs, they met Edwin as the wizard was just emerging from his room.

“Good afternoon.” he said politely. “Are my good for nothing, lazy companions up yet?”

“I didn't see them when I came in.” Emma replied. The wizard sighed.

“They must still be asleep,” he told her. “Last night was quite…hard work and we arrived back very late. In that case, Kane will be in his room, and I suppose we can take your appearance as a sign that we shall not be seeing him until tomorrow.” The half-elf blushed and Edwin gave her just a hint of a smile before hurrying past her and down the stairs. From where she was standing in the corridor, Emma could clearly hear someone snoring and she guessed that it was Kagain. There was no sight nor sound of Viconia and she could hear nothing from Kane's room either. Gently she turned the handle and pushed open the door.

Kane was lying on his back, his head turned towards the door. He was asleep and Emma stood in the doorway for a moment, just watching him. He looked different when he was asleep, not relaxed exactly but younger and more vulnerable. Softly shutting the door behind her, the half-elf went over to him and knelt by his side, bringing her hand up to his face. As her fingers gently touched his cheek, Kane opened his eyes. At first he seemed startled to see her in front of him, but then he smiled and took her hand in his, bringing it to his lips.

“Emma.” he whispered as he planted several small kisses across the back of her hand. “A welcoming sight to wake up to indeed. I am so glad to see you. I…I missed you.”

“We've only been apart for a few hours.” the half-elf smiled as her lover pulled himself up into a sitting position, not letting go of her hand. “But” she added, as she sat on the bed and slid her arms around his neck. “I've missed you too. How did the job go?”

“It was tiring.” Kane told her. “And bloody. Kagain nearly got his eyes taken out when he opened a trapped chest. Edwin complained because we didn't get back until the early morning. The usual. But I don't really want to talk about work and I don't imagine that you'd want to hear about most of it either. The jobs that we do…”

“Are not the kind that I and my group do.” Emma finished for him. “I figured that out quite a long time ago actually. Although,” she continued as she began biting his ear. “You will never guess what we did yesterday.”

“Go on then.” he tried his best to sound bored, but Emma knew that he was just acting. “Surprise me.”

“After we got back from the sewers.” the half-elf told him, moving from his ear to the side of his face. “We had an audience with Duke Eltan. You know him, right?”

“One of the Grand Dukes and commander of the Flaming Fist.” Kane answered at once, as he ran his fingers gently through her hair, silently marvelling at beautiful it was. “And I should know him. He's the one I pay so that the Flaming Fist soldiers will turn a blind eye to most of my group's activities.”

“Really?” Emma was rather surprised. “I don't know him well, but I never pictured him as someone who would be bribed.”

“He only does it because I am a powerful Bhaalspawn and he knows that I am not a person to be messed with.” The warrior gave a short laugh. “He doesn't need any more major trouble at present and besides, they have more important things to be dealing with. So, what did he want to see you for?”

“He had a job for us.” She told him, gently brushing her lips against his and then moving to his neck before he had a chance to kiss her again. “He wanted us to break into the Iron throne headquarters here in the city and attempt to gather information on what they were planning.”

“You are kidding me.” Kane shook his head in amazement. “Did you do it?”

“Yes we did.” Emma couldn't help but laugh at his reaction. “We didn't find much though, but we discovered that Reiltar has gone to Candlekeep on an important mission.” She broke off, lowered her head and fell silent.

“What is it?” Kane sounded genuinely concerned as he put his hand under her chin and gently lifted her head so that he could look into her eyes. “Emma? What's wrong?”

“Duke Eltan wants me to take my group back to Candlekeep to find out what is going on.” Emma said quietly. “He gave us a book to get in and we are supposed to leave tomorrow morning. I know that this is important, I promised him and anyway I know that we have to find out what is going on with the Iron Throne. But…but I don't want to go, Kane. So much has changed since I left and it's going to be different. I've had to be strong since I left there, but what if I can't…if I can't stay strong when I go back.”

“Come on.” Kane pulled her to him and held her, stroking her back as she buried her face in his shoulder and began to cry. “You are going to be fine. I know things have been very tough for you lately and I don't blame you for being upset and confused, but you are a strong person and a good leader. You can go to Candlekeep and find out what the Iron Throne are planning. It'll be hard, but I know you can do it. I believe in you.”

Emma looked up at him and gave him a watery smile. He smiled back at her and lowered his head to gently kiss away the tears that remained on her cheeks.

“That's better,” he whispered. “I don't like seeing you upset. And you know something; I'd drop everything to come to Candlekeep with you tomorrow if that is what it would take to make you happy. But the people in that place don't like me very much, so if I came I'd just cause trouble for you and draw attention to your group.”

“I'd love to have you with me,” she told him. “But you are right, you are not really liked in that place. Anyway, I want you to do something for me here. I need you to keep an eye on the Iron Throne's base. Can you do that for me?”

“I said I'd help you if I could” Kane said at once. “And that sounds easy enough. You can count on us, we won't let you down.”

“I know” Emma wiped her eyes with the back of her hand and gave him another smile, a happier one this time. “I love you,” she said suddenly. “I had no idea that it was possible to feel this way.” Sol-leks, who had settled in the corner on Kane's precious black cloak, gave a jealous growl and the half-elf laughed. “I mean to feel so attached to another human being,” she went on. “Of course I'm attached to you, stupid wolf. You are my animal companion after all.” Her animal companion made a whining sound, put his head down on his paws and shut his eyes.

“And I love you.” her lover said softly. “I could never imagine loving anyone more than I love you right now. I feel so lucky to have you here with me. I don't deserve you.”

“You cut that out now!” Emma said at once. “I'm here because I chose to be here, Kane. I have to go tomorrow, and I don't know how long we are going to be apart. So I intend to make the most of the time we have left together. Starting now.”

She barely had time to finish her sentence before his mouth was on hers. And she didn't resist, surrendering to his embrace and once again allowing him to take the lead. And as she touched him and kissed him, all thoughts of Candlekeep, the Iron Throne, Imoen and her other companions just melted away. None of it was important, at that moment nothing was important. It was just the two of them together.

Aw, it's Eddie! :) And he's being almost polite, I gather he approves of Emma?

She's so very much in love...but if she finds out about what Kane did to Imoen I can't see how she could help become disillusioned with him. Oh well, it's certainly going to be interesting to see what your plans are. :)

Great chapter! no matter how bad Kane is, their relationship is very pleasant and appears to be quite strong. Great job!

Very well written story, Silver. The dialog and interactions are very real. However, like Laufey, I do wonder whether Emma would feel the same if she knew the truth about what Kane did to Imoen. If she did, I'd be very surprised and rather disappointed. It also occurs to me that if both Emma and Kane are Bhaal-spawn, then they are also half-brother and sister which makes their current liaison incestuous and I'm curious how they (Emma particularly) and others in Emma's party, (like Kivan) will react when they figure that out.

Lots of twists to work through.... ;)

Thank you. I try my best. ;)

She won't feel the same about him when she finds out. However, that does not mean that she won't forgive him. We'll have to see what happens.

I have actually attempted to deal with the whole incest issue in my other Kane/Emma stories. Again, we'll just have to see. ;-)

Indeed.
