This is the final instalment of the dialogue series for Shadows of Amn. I've included the final dialogues of the timed lovetalk series, plus a few extra important commentaries. The romance does, of course, continue in Throne of Bhaal.

Dialogue #25

Dialogue takes place before resting

1. Keldorn: I wonder, my friend, I wonder if we have any hope at all, you and I.

A. What do you mean? => 2

B. Are you saying it’s over between us? => 2

C. Do you ever talk sense? => 8

2. Keldorn: I try not to think of it, but you must realise our time together is limited. I must know: will you regret it when we have to... part company?

A. Of course I would! I don’t see why we have to separate, ever! => 3

B. I’d regret it more than I can say, and I don’t intend to let it happen. => 3

C. Well, no. This is only a brief fling, fun while it lasts. => 6

3. Keldorn: I do not wish it either, but I think we have little choice. Can’t you see that the Order will be baying for my blood by now? I am nothing more than an escaped criminal in their eyes, a paladin gone rogue, because I murdered an innoc... murdered Sir William. They will find us, Charname, and when they do...I must ask you to...let them arrest me.

A. What?! Absolutely not! => 4

B. Hmm, well ok then. => 7

C. Why should I let them arrest you? => 4

4. Keldorn: I am a danger to you, a danger to all in your party! The Order will not just attack me, they will consider you guilty too, since we travel together! That is their idea of, hah, justice! I will not see your life placed at risk for my sake, I will not!

A. I’m not letting you martyr yourself for my sake! We’ll deal with the Order when we have to- and we’ll deal with them together. => 5

B. Well, if you feel so strongly about it, maybe you should leave and face them on your own. => 7

5. Keldorn: You...you would do that, for me? Such friendship, such...love? I do not deserve you, my friend, my...soulmate. Let us dwell in the here and now, and let the future take care of itself. Maybe we can snatch a few last moments of joy, together, before the axe finally falls...(dialogue ends)

6. Keldorn: A brief fling? No...it, it was more than that to me. So much more. But, if this is how it is, then this is how it must be. I wish...but no. There is no point wishing for what shall never be. (dialogue ends, romance ends)

7. Keldorn: I, I thank you for letting me take this sacrifice for you. My life is all but over, I am little more than a shell of my former self. My final end, perhaps in some forgotten dungeon, or at the end of a rope, will be little more than a release for my tortured soul. I will leave you now, Charname. Perhaps you will think of me, once in a while, and maybe even offer up a prayer...(dialogue ends, romance ends, Keldorn leaves)

8. Keldorn: Not often, and not lately. But today, I do... => 2

Dialogue #26

Five standard paladins spawn (like those of the fallen paladin quest), plus Prelate Wesselan. Please see notes beneath.

1 Keldorn: My time has come, Charname. It is over...

A. What are you talking about? => 2

B. Great, you’ve finally lost it. Knew that was coming. => 2

2. Prelate: Lord Firecam, no longer Sir Keldorn, stand down. Let no blood be spilled this day.

Keldorn: ‘No longer Sir’? I have lost my place in the Order with no trial?

Prelate: An upstanding member of the Order of the Radiant Heart would have turned himself in for trial long since. Your cowardly refusal to face the consequences of your actions is not the behaviour expected of an honourable knight.

Keldorn: Perhaps the behaviour of an honourable knight is not always the sensible course to take? I have learned much about the Order in recent tendays, a great deal...

Prelate: I never thought I would hear such a thing! Keldorn, what has happened to you?

Keldorn: I have been through many trials, but they have served to open my eyes. I see the Order for what it really is, now, yes indeed.

Prelate: Please, Keldorn, old friend, stand down. Do not force my hand. I will plead for leniency on your behalf, you have my word.

A. No, you can’t go with them, they’ll kill you! I can’t imagine life without you... => 3

B. Don’t leave me, Keldorn! I...love you. => 4

C. You had better go with them. If you don’t, they’ll never leave us alone. => 6

D. You should go and face judgement, for the sake of your everlasting soul! => 7

3. Keldorn: You...you can’t? Neither can I imagine living without you. We are soulmates, Charname.=> 5

4. Keldorn: And I, I love you too, I always have! There, I say it, out loud, where all can hear! => 5

5. Prelate: What is this? It cannot be! You have been corrupted by this Charname, do you not see? It must be a spell, an elixir...do you not remember what you once were? Speak to me, Keldorn!

Keldorn: Oh yes, I remember. I remember well. I remember years of rules, years of battle and death. Years of privation, years of misery! How many have died at your orders, Prelate? You accuse me of murder, but how many have you killed?

Prelate: Many have fallen, but they are all honoured in our hearts. They died a righteous death in the service of Ilmater. I mourn every single knight who falls.

Keldorn: Do you really? Every single knight, every single... every single squire? Do you remember them all?

Prelate: I may not know the names of all who died, but if they died serving justice, their deaths were not in vain. Would you dishonour their sacrifices, dishonour the Order like this? I beg of you, Keldorn, come and face your trial, before it is too late.

Keldorn: Maybe I do dishonour the Order. Maybe I no longer wish to honour it. I see now, I see clearly. The Order is, is nothing, do you hear? I don’t know you anymore, Wesselan. Don’t you see that the knights in shining armour, glorious on the outside, are empty on the inside, robbed of all life has to offer? That the meaningless sacrifices just save those too weak and pathetic to help themselves?

Life in the Order is not life at all, it is a sham. You would replace life with rules, and I want no part of it anymore! You want me to face trial for my actions, but I tell you this: that bastard deserved to die, and killing him gave me a LOT of pleasure!

Prelate: Do not force this action upon me, I plead with you! For the sake of all that you have achieved, do not do this!

Keldorn: Enough! I spit on you and your Order, I spit on my former life! You are nothing to me now, do you hear? NOTHING!

Prelate: Then I do not know you either, Keldorn. The righteous paladin I once knew is dead, and I shall mourn him.

Keldorn: No, Prelate, I am very much alive. Understand this: I’m more alive than I have been in years, and I intend to stay that way!

Prelate: You know what I must do if you do not come willingly with me.

Keldorn: I do, and I say this: Do your worst, ‘old friend’! (dialogue ends)

Prelate Wesselan and the paladins turn hostile. After the battle has been won:

Keldorn: So, it comes to an end. Free, at last! All my ties with the past are gone, I can now live for myself, and no one else! Damn the rest of the world, my time is now mine own! Come, Charname, we have lives to live, battles to be won! (dialogue ends. Keldorn becomes fallen paladin, neutral evil, Hallowed Redeemer sword crumbles to dust, see note 1)

6. Keldorn: No, Charname, this cannot be! You would abandon me now? No...you I can’t blame for my own actions. I blame...myself. => 8

7. Keldorn: You...are right. I sense that this is my last chance for redemption. It is time for me to face my demons, to take responsibility for my actions. Ah, a strange madness indeed must have seized me in recent days! I...will go with you, Prelate, willingly. => 8

8. Prelate: I thank you, Lord Firecam. I had no wish to fight you and your party. Come, we shall need to arrange a time and place for your trial...(Keldorn, Prelate Wesselan and the paladins all leave, romance ends, dialogue ends, see note 2.)

Note 1

First of all, the death of the Prelate obviously causes problems for Anomen’s knighting. There are two possible solutions to this:

1. Delay this lovetalk until Anomen has either been accepted as a knight, or rejected. This may cause a long delay at this point in the dialogue.

2. Alter Anomen’s knighting so that it can be performed by Sir Ryan Trawl or another knight of the Order instead, if the Prelate is dead. It seems logical that Anomen would fail his Test if he is travelling with Keldorn the fallen paladin, since it means he helped kill the Prelate. This is harder to code, but perhaps would make for better gameplay.

Secondly, another problem is that the Order can no longer help you kill Bohdi at the end of the game. This seems pretty realistic and logical, but it is worth mentioning as a side effect of this dialogue.

Note 2

If Keldorn is arrested by the Order, the next Town Crier the party go past will cry out:

“Hear ye, hear ye! Fallen paladin arrested and hanged after trial! Lord Keldorn Firecam, no longer Sir, once Knight of the Most Noble Order of the Radiant Heart, was publicly executed earlier today for the murder of an innocent man in an inn a few tendays ago. Sir Keldorn, widely admired as an upstanding member of the Order, is thought to have lost his mind on learning the identity of his wife’s lover. The execution was well attended by many Athkatlan nobles, who agreed it was a reassuring sign that justice is always done in Amn.”

Dialogue #27

1. Keldorn: Charname, I have something to confess. Something terrible has happened.

A. What? => 2

B. Ok, you murdered a noble, your wife left you, you killed the Prelate, and you think something terrible has happened? Well I never! => 4

C. I don’t want to talk to you any more, you’re just too scary now. => 5

2. Keldorn: It is hardly surprising, but...I have lost my powers. I can no longer call on Torm’s power to cast spells. I’m of no use to you any more...

A. You’re still a good warrior, and what do you need Torm for anyway? => 3

B. I don’t care about your powers, I care about you. => 8

C. Well, sounds like you’re no use in this party any more. => 6

3. Keldorn: I don’t need Torm! What is He, except a deity that delights in making others suffer? He is a pathetic mewling brat of a God, and I worshipped him for far too long. What a waste of my life...

A. You said it. Anyway, I don’t care if you’ve lost your powers, you’re still you, and I need you. => 8

B. I think Torm is a great God, but I don’t care if you’ve lost your powers, you’re still you, and I need you. => 8

C. Torm is a glorious God, he upholds truth and honour! You lost his support through your own foolish actions! => 7

4. Keldorn: Ha, yes, yes, very funny I’m sure. Just listen for once, will you? => 2

5. Keldorn: So callous, Charname? You say I am ‘scary’, hmm? You know not the fear I could inspire if I so wished! I may no longer be a paladin, but I am a powerful warrior, remember that...(dialogue ends, romance ends)

6. Keldorn: Am I not, indeed? Very well, I’ll take my leave. Be warned though: I do not take lightly to such a callous betrayal. Watch your back, Charname. (dialogue ends, romance ends, Keldorn leaves)

7. Keldorn: Ergh, such sickly sweet sentiment nauseates me! How can you believe such nonsense? I didn’t lose His support, I rejected it. Remember that, you gullible fool. (dialogue ends, romance ends)

8. Keldorn: I...you do? Yes, and I care about you, Charname. More than I can say. You have been an inspiration to me, a guide through the dark places. There have been times when I have come so close to giving up, taking a knife and slitting my throat in sheer misery. You were always there, and you were always supportive. It is thanks to you that I found myself.

Now we have found each other, I never intend to leave your side. Come what may, we shall be together, my... beloved. (dialogue ends)

Spellhold Slayer Change

1. PC: You wake suddenly, a pounding in your ears. A shock of pain passes through your body and you feel your mind slipping away, forced aside by the darkness within

Keldorn: You’re shivering, beloved. Surely you’re not cold? It seems fine and warm to me under our blankets.

A. I think it’s happening again, stay away, for Gods’ sake! => 2

B. It’s not cold, stay away from me if you value your life! => 2

C. Stay back if you don’t want to be ripped to shreds, idiot paladin! => 2

2. What? Speak up! I may be old, but I didn’t think I was going deaf...what? What is happening to you, Charname? No....no, stop that now! (slayer change)

After returning to human

1. Keldorn: Well...I...that is something I’ve never seen before! I have read about it, of course. That was the Slayer, avatar of Bhaal. Ugly beast, hmm? The Order, of course, wrote at nauseating length about its evil. I wonder, though if you could turn this to your advantage.

A. Turn it to my advantage?! Have you lost your mind? I was terrified! => 2

B. Hmm, maybe you are right, I could gain great power...=> 3

2. Keldorn: I’m not surprised, but think of it: the Slayer is a very powerful form, and power means safety from your enemies, does it not?

However, Gods, even dead ones are jealous of their power, and it no godly powers come without cost, do they? We must be endlessly cautious- if the Slayer cannot be controlled, it would be a dangerous gift indeed...(dialogue ends)

3. Keldorn: IF you can control it, which I doubt. Your change today was not deliberate, correct? Gods rarely give away their power for free. I wonder what the price will be this time...(dialogue ends)

Encounter with Bodhi in the graveyard

Bodhi spawns on entering the graveyard as per usual

1. Bodhi: You are becoming an impressive pest, one I am finding difficult to ignore!

Honestly, Charname, I simply do not know what to do with you. I grow tired of seeing you in my shadow.

A: I was not the one that fled our last encounter, Bodhi. Sorry if I... scared you. =>2

B: You are all shadow, Bodhi. I am the light that will mark the new day. =>3

C: And I grow tired of you. I will have your head on a pike before we are through here! =>4

2. Bodhi: Hardly. It was simply more important that I report of your condition to Irenicus. He has decided that it is of no importance, interesting though it is. => 5

3. Bodhi: What in blazes are you blathering on about? You speak as though someone is scribing your words for some pompous book of history. => 5

4. Bodhi: Oooh, you are no less the fighter for having been through the drow, are you. A pity you are not of more use. => 5

5. Bodhi: Regardless, I have not the time to stand here discussing what you will or will not do. I have more important duties to take care of. (If Keldorn romance is active and Keldorn is in the party => 6)

6. Bodhi: You follow Irenicus and I, and we are both heartily sick of this. It is time for a lesson, I think. Your friend Keldorn will do nicely. Tell me, fallen paladin, what would you sacrifice to keep Charname safe?

Keldorn: I would give anything! I’d give my life for Charname’s sake!

Bodhi: Now, I doubt you’ll have to give your life, oh yes, I very much doubt that. That is not our way, after all. Be warned, Charname: you will lose more the longer you follow me! (dialogue ends, Keldorn is kidnapped)

Final battle with Bodhi

Not all the standard game dialogue tree written out, for the sake of brevity. Journal entries will be the standard entry, but with Keldorn’s name.

Bodhi: And so it shall end here. Welcome. You have been very resourceful in finding me, though I have not gone out of my way to hide.

I’m sure your reasons for coming are all very important to you. Do spare me the boredom of hearing them.

PC: There is no escape for you now, vampire! I’ll have your black heart on a pike!

Bodhi: I have no intention of escaping. You have come to your final battle with me, Charname, and I intend to enjoy it. I intend...

How did you come to return here? You should have thought I was in Suldanesselar... They told you of the theft, didn’t they!

You help those treacherous elves?! They deserve all they receive, and more! They will not even approach us while we destroy them, such is their arrogance!

Let them shiver that they will die between me and Irenicus! They would not even acknowledge us as their own, and now we will bury them all!

PC: Why should they acknowledge your filth! I do not blame them in the least!

Bodhi: Fool! They would have you think that we are some foreign intruders, attacking their city for no reason! Their shame is that Irenicus and I are very familiar indeed!

No *elf* would dare turn against the others, no *elf* would endanger the very fabric of their society, no *elf* would do as Irenicus and I have done!

Who was it that plead their case? Elhan? He stood by while they echoed our crimes in their punishments!

I should almost let you live so that he could have the shame of an outsider questioning him about this whole matter! Almost! (If Keldorn has been kidnapped) => 2

2. Bodhi: But... no, I have already prepared much for this meeting, Charname. I did warn you that you would suffer great loss if you continued your push towards me. I did not lie.

A: You have taken too much already! You will return both Imoen's soul and Keldorn! =>3

B: And you have delivered on that promise. Return Keldorn and perhaps I will be merciful. =>3

C: I would have hunted you for your theft of Keldorn alone. He is very important to me. =>3

D: You place too much confidence in sentiment. The theft of Keldorn will not save you. =>4

3. Bodhi: Ah yes, the once-noble paladin! It has to be said, Charname, you are full of surprises. You have done an excellent job of subverting him, really, I am most impressed. You are a loss to vampire kind, one that can’t be avoided, sadly.

Did you know there is a part of him that hates you for what you did to him? Oh yes, he and I know each other very well now, although he is not fully turned.

Keldorn: Indeed, mistress, you are my guide in all things!

Bodhi: As you can see, he has taken very well to his new life. He will do my bidding, don’t doubt it. He is mine, heart and soul, and you shall never have him back

Bodhi: So let us end this, with your life crushed by the hand of your vampiric love. You won't even be reunited in death. They are mine, as long as I live! (dialogue ends, fight begins)

4. Bodhi: An interesting ploy, though I am sure his fate will still serve as an example, whether you wish him back or not. =>3

Rescuing Keldorn from Vampirism

Keldorn is resurrected after his body and Bodhi’s heart is placed on the altar.

1. Keldorn: N...no! No, it cannot be, you revived me. Oh, Charname, let me die!

A. What?! I just rescued you, I’m not killing you again. => 2

B. It’s alright, you’re safe now, Bodhi is dead. => 2

2. Keldorn: Bodhi showed me such depths of evil as I have never dreamed of, and there was a part of me that...loved it. And, and I realised...I realised where your ‘teachings’ have led me. You led me down into darkness and torture, you ruined my life! Without you, I would not be a fugitive, on the run from the Order. I should curse you for what you have done to me!

A. You can’t blame me for everything that has happened to you! You could have gone back to the Order at any time, and you never did. => 3

B. I can’t believe I’m hearing this! I tried to help you when you were suffering, and you thank me this way? => 3

C. Get bent, Keldorn. Oh, my mistake, you already ARE. => 4

3. Keldorn: And why? Because you were there, directing me down the darkest path, always. I despise you, Charname, know that now. You and Bodhi are kin in my eyes. I refuse to spend one more second in your company!

A. No, don’t leave me, I love you! => 5

B. Not a problem, I’ve got no space for you, anyway. => 4

4. Keldorn: WHAT? This is the last insult. You would cast me aside? Bodhi was right about you, you disgusting creature...and she was right about me. What kind of a monster have I become? I, I can stand it no more! I can’t stand this life, I cannot stand to fall any further! No more! (dialogue ends, romance ends, Keldorn leaves)

5. Keldorn: So you say, but now I find it hard to believe. But...but...the Order are still after my blood, no doubt. I would be safer travelling in a party. Know this, though: It is over between us. I will trust you no longer, Charname. Trust is for the foolish, and the dead! (dialogue ends, Keldorn rejoins group)

Entering the Tree

1. PC narrative: You feel a tingling as you approach the stairs; a familiar touch which you instinctively recognize as your own soul. Irenicus is near, in the next room.

You pause, knowing that you may not survive the battle to come. You have little choice, however; without your soul, your fate is a grim and certain one.

You turn and regard those who remain in your party. You feel a need, perhaps, to ascertain their loyalty, their friendship, or to offer a chance to reconsider. => 2

2. The NPCs make their regular interjections. If the Keldorn romance is active, then:

Keldorn, the once-proud paladin. Of all your companions, perhaps he has suffered the most on your travels. Even though he has rejected you, he has stayed in your company for his own reasons. As you look at his weary, battle-scarred face, he frowns slightly, as if annoyed with himself for some reason.

PC: Keldorn, you don’t...

Keldorn: No, let me speak. You wonder why I’m still here. I hardly know myself. Do I owe you anything? No. And yet...I cannot stand back and let you die.

I lost one love of my life, and no matter how foolish it is, I can’t lose a...another. Love is blind, they say, and none more so than...than mine.

Irenicus awaits us, and perhaps death as well. My own death bothers me little: I have lived with danger for years, but if you died because I was not there, that would be a torture I couldn’t stand. Strange, but true. I will stand with you, Charname.

PC Narrative: There is nothing more to be said. Without a further word, you turn grimly back to the stairs before you. Your soul awaits.
