The mage casted various spells. Rhaltor and Nalitha were pushed back against the wall. Rhaltor stood back up feeling the pain in his arm. He banged his arm against the wall, reattaching it to the rest of the body as he collapsed again. Nalitha was still on the floor, barely conscious and dazed.

“Now, magling,” the mage said. “You will tell me where the Bhaalspawn is.”

“Away from you!” Rhaltor said back.

“Worthless worm,” the mage spoke emotionless and stretched out his hand. Rhaltor felt a burst of pain and collapsed. “Die, magling!” The mage left allowing the place to burn steadily…

***

Eight of the vampires took an assault of Mel. Mel, to fast for the vampires to see, was able to cut half of them down before they had a chance to react. Jemeran, however, fought two vampires and found a difficult time. He was much shorter and much fatter that the slim human female who could easily slip out of any situation…except this one. More vampires started to appear, concentrating most of their efforts on Mel. Mel's scimitar cut through the air gracefully, tumbling and slicing against the rotting flesh. Still, more vampires came, hoarding against the graceful thief. The blade glowed in the night sky and Mel's warm breath could be seen in the cold night. Mel could feel the cuts and scratched on her body, but paid no heave. Mel for one brief second could not move her wielding weapon with a hand on her wrist. Immediately she knew she was at a disadvantage and threw the weapon into her other hand. She quickly cut down the vampire restraining her quickly as another took its place. Mel was ready to turn around to face the beast…but it was too late. The vampire planted its teeth deep into Mel's neck and pain surged throughout her body as the vampire sucked enough blood to maker her weak. Close to the verge of collapse, she looked at the halfling.

“Jem…” She dropped her scimitar as Jemeran looked to her.

“…er…” She fell to her knees.

…an!” She fell completely to the ground as the vampires started their retreat. Mists formed around Mel and disappeared. To Jemeran's amazement, Mel also disappeared as well as all her belongings.

“Rhaltor won't be happy,” he said to himself. “What would vampires want with Mel?”

***

Pulling back the string of his elven bow, Elithan shot the dark elves as the ran out of the cave. Elithan could easily see them in the night, but the Drow had better eye sight then other type of elves. Elithan could see the Forest elves were being over-runed.

***

Dakarn hacked away at each vampire he saw, and Maric slashed through them with his Ithoc family blade. They could see barely any hope for their survival, but never the less, they kept the attack.

“Now this be fun!” Dakarn yelled. “No bloody elf, all the enemies ya can get yer hands on!”

***

Docin could see the magical bolt coming towards him. In an instant, the explosion forced him from his horse sending him to the ground. Docin blanked out.

***

He looked up again once more, daytime. He looked around trying to find Reneem and his party. The only thing left were their gear and their four horses. He was alone…

***

Docin woke up looking around and was about to yell, but Rhaltor quickly pressed down on Docin's mouth with his hand.

“Let me guess,” Rhaltor said. “Another premonition…”

***

“Thank you,” Mar'tare said taking the drink for Hestes.

“Just the usual water,” Hestes commented walking away. Mar'tare took one sip of the drink. He leaned back in his chair tightening the hood around his head. Mar'tare leaned his head against his hand.

***

“This dream, are you sure?” Rhaltor asked. “You've seen many dreams where I am killed but yet it had not happened.”

“Well, I never actually seen you die…”

“And what of this one?” Nalitha asked cutting Docin off.

“Well, this one too…”

“Then who's to say that we will die, Docin?” Rhaltor asked.

“Well, I…uh…it's a mage. A powerful one at that. He casted trough your protection as if it was nothing!” Nalitha and Rhaltor looked at each other.

“The mage!” Rhaltor exclaimed.

***

Vasta started to play Mar'tare's favorite song on her harp. Mar'tare seemed to be drawn to it. From her expertise, Mar'tare was depressed.

Come, Mar'tare, she thought in her mind. Come to enjoy this wonderful song of yours.

***

Rhaltor threw a katana to Reneem. He caught it with his free hand trying to figure out what Rhaltor was doing. Before Reneem could manage to react, Rhaltor was standing over Reneem. Reneem felt a pain on his chest and the floor on his back.

“There is such thing as dodging,” Rhaltor explained. “Or haven't I taught you that?”

“Well, you did say to get as many weapons as you can.”

“But not at the expense of your life. As I have said before, be prepared for anything.”

***

Merdin was flying around the bar before it was opened for customers. He started to hear an argument from another room.

“Leave!” a voice came.

“But…”

“Leave! These concerns you not” Leave, sister!”

“Hestes? I do not understand. You wanted be to cheer him up and now you come to draw me away?”

“I concern for you, sister. Please leave, for you are to young and too naive to understand.”

“But…what?”

“Go, Vasta! Go for your sake!”

“I…” A bright flash appeared almost blinding Merdin.

“I am sorry for this, Vasta, but it is necessary.”

“Baquel, is the spell ready?” Alpar's voice rang out.

“It is.”

“I am truly sorry, my friend.” Another bright flash and Merdin flew away trying to find Rhaltor or Nalitha.

***

“What will you do to me?” Vasta asked confused at what had just accord. “Why are you doing this?”

“I am truly sorry,” Hestes said unsure why she had done what she did. “But you will not understand. You know nothing of war, yet.”

“I still need more time,” Baquel said. “I need more spells! Hestes! Come, help me with…”

“Baquel!” a feminine voice rang as a blue robed mage appeared. “Stop this madness you've created! To betray your own? This is unlike you! You are lucky I am not going to tell Rhaltor immediately!”

“Nalitha,” Alpar said. “Why…this is just a…play we were doing…”

“Stop!” Nalitha screamed. “This is madness! To believe you is impossible right now! You have no authority to do any of this! Alpar, who was a friend of Mar'tare. You have betrayed him! Now he lies there unconscious while you plan to use him for your own purposes?”

“It is for the greater good,” Alpar responded.

“And to you Hestes,” Nalitha said. “What would your mother think if she were still alive? Hmm? You know it as well as I do! She would never agree to using your own sister in this assassination plot!”

“You question my purpose,” Hestes replied. “And so do I, I must admit.”

“Baquel!” Nalitha yelled. “I don't know you anymore. You have changed over a short time. I know you not anymore. You once trusted Rhaltor's judgement and now you deceive him? No, I do not know you anymore.”

“'Tis a shame you must know of this,” Baquel said. “One of my friends, were you, and I was willing to take whatever consequence to destroy Bhaal.”

“Bah!” Nalitha retorted. “You deserve nothing for this vile deed.”

“I have deserved a voice as an elder! For twice older than you can know! Years I have seen! Many decades!”

“You had a voice,” Nalitha said. “But you have lost it to this deed.”

“Enough!” Baquel raised his hands and a fiery fury busted out. Nalitha quickly responded with an magical shield.

“No!” Hestes yelled. Alpar unsheathed his dagger unwillingly to target the blue mage. A battle of powerful magic formed as Nalitha and Baquel sent spells at each other almost destroying the room. Vasta was stunned. Nalitha couldn't see it coming when a dagger was raised behind her. The dagger was force down as Nalitha turned to see the blood splatter across her face.

“Hestes!” she screamed casting a spell knocking Alpar to the ground. Vasta started screaming seeing the blood on the floor, for her sister unwilling to see Nalitha die ran into the blade. Seeing a chance to attack, Baquel began casting a spell. Alpar was back on his feet seeing his victim still alive and the crossfire had injured Hestes. Alpar continued the attack as he saw a blade blocking his dagger from the attack and another on his neck. White hair blew across his face.

“Og'elend!” Mar'tare screamed into Alpar's face.

Nalitha in turn began to cast a spell to Baquel, but saw no need. Baquel laid shivering as Rhaltor drew his blade against his neck.

“Hestes!” Nalitha turned again bending down to her.

“V…Vasta…”Hestes said shivering. “T…take …away…take her away. She need not see her sister die.”

“Reneem,” Rhaltor said. “Take Vasta away.” Reneem walked up to the young bard as she was frozen staring at Hestes.

“Go…” Hestes said weakly. Reneem, figuring that Vasta would not hear him, picked her up to realize she did not notice. “Go.”

Reneem walked away with Vasta in his arms, watching her see the death of her sister.

“I have misjudged you, it seems,” Nalitha said.

“No…” Hestes said. “You were right. I…I will die as a traitor this day. Vasta…see to it she is safe.” Hestes' breathing stopped as her eyes froze on Nalitha.

“You shan't be remember as a traitor,” Nalitha said. “You acted when you were needed. Go, and let the gods have mercy upon your soul.”

“She is dead?” Alpar asked.

“No thanks to you, og'elend!” Mar'tare yelled.

“I can see what has happened,” Rhaltor said to Baquel. “But you will be portrayed as a traitor. How did you convince such a soul to agree to this deed?” Baquel smiled evilly.

“I have my ways,” he said.

“Then die,” Rhaltor said. “But I will not kill you. Let the wolfs kill you both!”

“I will see to it personally,” Cal'tar, a warrior, said.

“Hestes,” Nalitha said. “A friend misjudged.”

***

Reneem started packing along with his party, preparing for a travel. Rhaltor informed them that Docin had a premonition soon to come.

“Docin has a special gift,” Rhaltor explained. “He could see the threads of the gods. Your lives are endangered, I can see.”

Reneem looked at Imoen.

“How were the lessons you learned from Nalitha these past months?” Reneem asked.

“Alright,” Imoen said.

“Jaheira? How do you feel?”

“I am good for now,” the druid answered.

“Khalid? How has your stay been?”

“P…peaceful.”

“Good.”

***

“Well,” Cal'tar said. “Goodbye to you. See you in the Abyss…” But Cal'tar didn't finish his sentence as he was turned to ashes. Alpar started shivering due to the pile of dust knowing that he would be next. A mage stood before them that he did not recognize.

“Ah, my master,” Baquel said kneeling. “Come to seek the position of the Bhaalspawn, have you?”

Alpar was wide eyed before he took his last breath.

***

“Alright. This is where Sadoth's group is going to be placed. Gethra's group will block the entrance to the basement while Bahto's group helps Sadoth's. Mar'tare and Docin will enter the sewers with Reneem's party to see them leave. Docin will accompany them to the DeGalls house between Amn and the northern part of the Sword Coast while Mar'tare reports to Jemeran in Athkatla. While we talk, Bestare has set up traps through the path to the basement. Nalitha and I will be in the basement to see Reneem's party leave and then we will enter the fight. Any questions?”

“Just one,” Docin said as he and Mar'tare looked at each other. “Why the sewers?”

“I do admit, abbil,” Mar'tare said. “It does have a certain lack of…dignity in it all.”

***

“Are you ready, Reneem?” Rhaltor asked.

“As ready as I'll ever be,” Reneem answered. “What will happen to Vasta?”

“She is in a safe house,” Nalitha explained. “With Netylia, Bestare and Brem.”

“Reneem,” Rhaltor said. “There are people here who are willing to die for the cause to destroy Bhaal for eternity. Now, I want you to promise me not to let the taint control you.”

“But…”

“Promise me that you will try!”

“I…I will.”

“Safe travels, Reneem, and let fate let us meet again.”

“Do sti alp ata!” a voice called.

“What does that mean?” Reneem asked.

“We are under attack,” Rhaltor answered readying his katana.

> Die Leatherface, die!

Oh, he will.

> Cool vampire fight scene. ;)

Mel will be intorduced soon. Jemeran-sooner. Dakarn and Maric-Next. Elithan-Another chapter.

> I think this guy would get along well with Korgan.

Kind of except for that whole alignment part. Same class, both chaotic, both opposite from each other in terms of the side they both fight on.

> No, don't take the drink!

He did.

Pseudo Dragon: Merdin! Not little one!

> What an excuse.

It's an excuse?

He will.

Especially a duel-whielding one.

> Jerk.

He was once good. But now he's evil.

> It's worse than you can possibly imagine.

Of course it is.

> Uh-Oh...

Uh-Oh is right.

> By Leatherface and Traitor Boy, right?

Traitor boy will come back in several of the next chapters, but not this one again. As for Leatherface, yes.

Adrian
The road to the abyss may be paved with good intentions, but it is those with bad intentions that race down that road as fast as they can.
