CHAPTER 42

…Look here she comes now
Bow down and stare in wonder…(Evanescence, “Everybody’s fool”)

Solaufein stopped in a particularly large cave, not far from the Illithid city the party had escaped from barely two days before, "All right, this place looks perfect for an ambush", he said, then gave them instructions about where to place themselves, taking advantage of the boulders and stalactites scattered around to hide and take the Mind-Flayers by surprise.

Meg couldn’t help admiring the intelligence his plan revealed, He’s smart, I give him that. We’ll see if he’s also good at fighting, though if he has survived this long, he sure can’t be a weakling, she thought and for a fleeting moment, she toyed with the idea of having the Drow switch places with Aerie in her party, but dismissed it quickly, Nah, can’t do that: she’s a friend and besides, Minsc can’t complete his Dajemma without a witch to protect. Pity, though.

Sensing her eyes on him, Solaufein’s head whipped around to meet her gaze, "Is there any problem, Veldrin?", he asked in a challenging tone. "Apart from the fact that I have to endure your presence and your attitude? No", she shot back without missing a beat and just took her place behind a stalactite, unaware of his glare.

They waited for half an hour and finally, a small patrol of Mind-Flayers walked towards their hiding places: there were four Illithid, along with three Umber-Hulks and in the middle of their formation was a handcuffed Drow female, who wore a tattered and stained black silk dress and looked like she was a heartbeat away from chopping the head off the shoulders of the nearest creature.

"Get ready", Solaufein whispered, "Three...Two...NOW!". At his signal, a volley of enchanted arrows rained on the enemies, courtesy of both Imoen and Yoshimo, while Edwin cast a spell to paralyze the nearest Mind-Flayer and then summoned a pack of Gnolls to help his companions, who hurled themselves at the unsuspecting monsters.

The Drow warrior intoned the spell to activate the blessed artefact and a flash of light surrounded the Psionics and the Umber-Hulks, stalling their powers for some precious moments and this turned out to be a very useful advantage: the monsters were taken off-balance by the surprise attack and the inability to make use of their psychic powers, allowing the party to inflict some serious damage before the enemies could react.

Still, the fight was not easy by any means, especially because Ilivarra was forbidden to use her arcane magic and Jaelryn could not rely on her druidic spells, both women having to limit themselves to using their enchanted weapons to take down their opponents. In the end, the Mind-Flayers and Umber Hulks were killed, thought not without having inflicted some heavy injures on the adventurers.

The former captive of the Illithid, who had slid behind a large boulder as soon as the commotion had begun, slowly came out of her hiding place, a haughty look on her face, "Well, about time someone freed me from those disgusting beasts", she said, dusting her clothes, "Take these things off of me", she ordered then, making her handcuffs clatter.

Solaufein obediently opened them with a cantrip, but he made sure to avoid touching her and kept himself as far from her as he could, "My respects, Phaere, daughter of Matron Mother Ardulace. I trust you are unhurt?", he asked in a forced humble tone. The woman blinked, surprised, "Solaufein? They have sent you? How it must gall you, to put your life at stake to save mine", she spat, but his face betrayed nothing, like that of an extremely skilled poker player. "I did what I was ordered to, as always", he replied flatly.

Phaere smirked, "Yes, you did and you will keep on doing it, if you want to live. Now, I see some strangers with you". "These? They are...". "I’m sure they can speak for themselves, male", she cut him off, then looked at each party member in turn, "Who is in charge here?". Meg took a step forward and bowed, "I am, Mistress Phaere. My name is Veldrin of House Zauvirr, from Ched Nasad, at your service. My underlings and I have come to your magnificent city at the request of Matron Mother Ardulace".

"Oh, so you’re the mercenaries my mother called for. You did well, Veldrin and we will speak again soon. I’ll go back to the city, you will meet me there". Solaufein started, his eyes widening slightly in alarm, "You can’t go back alone! What if you are attacked again? I won’t be held responsible, should you be captured a second time!".

The daughter of the Matron Mother huffed, "I’ll have you know, male, that I am perfectly capable of taking care of myself". Says the woman we have just rescued from a fate worse than death, because she was too incapable to save her own ass, the Ilmatari thought, suppressing the urge to roll her eyes, "Mistress Phaere, may I speak?".

"You can". "Your beautiful dress shows the signs of the rough treatment those inferior beings have subjected you to and I can’t stand the thought of my Mistress being seen in such ragged attire. I therefore humbly ask permission to escort you back to the city: my underlings and I will place ourselves in formation around you, shielding you from prying eyes until you can change into something worthier of your stature and beauty".

Phaere nodded slowly, "Your words have merit, Veldrin", she admitted, looking down at her ruined dress, "It’s not fitting for the firstborn of a Matron Mother to walk around dressed like a beggar. Very well, permission granted". "Thank you, Mistress", the Human priestess bowed again and she and her companions formed a circle around the Drow woman, then the group moved towards the city at a steady pace.

When they arrived to the Female Fighter Society, Phaere stopped them. "All right, you can go now. Meet me at the tavern and make sure to have some fine liquor ready for our meeting", she ordered, then she disappeared inside the building without another word. As soon as she was out of earshot, Solaufein turned to the Ilmatari, "Smart move, Veldrin, I give you that".

"I have no idea what you’re talking about", she replied curtly, turning on her heels, "Let’s go guys, to the tavern". Ignoring her rudeness, he followed her, curiosity once again flickering in his ruby eyes, "I’m talking about your little plan to ensure Phaere’s safety: her pride wouldn’t have let her accept an open offer for protection, but you played on her vanity to make her allow us to come along".

Veldrin shot him a sidelong glance, "If you are insinuating that I manipulated the daughter of the Matron Mother I came here to serve, I suggest you tread carefully, male: I am sure you would not like having your tongue cut off", she hissed, thought her stomach churned at having to be so rude towards someone who had just paid her a compliment. "No insinuation, I assure you", his own tone became colder and she sensed a brief flash of hurt coming from him.

Just what kind of Drow is he?, she wondered, surprised, I don’t sense any evil in him, only a lot of pain, sadness and loneliness. Maybe...Maybe we could become friends. She opened her mouth to apologize, then snapped it shut: soothing his injured feelings wasn’t worth blowing their cover and wasting their lives, Gods, how I hate this place.

*******************

The tavern was incredibly large, more than any other Meg had ever been to, with a huge fighting pit placed at the right side of the entrance, where the fighters could face some slave monsters and another smaller pit on the left side, where the duels between Drow took place. She selected a table far from the entrance and large enough for her party, making sure that every man was close to a woman and that Alton and Yazston flanked her. Solaufein took a seat next to Elkantar, tapping his foot on the floor as they waited for Phaere to arrive.

Ilivarra cleared her throat, "Mistress Veldrin...". "What do you want?". "Do you remember that we were told to secure some drinks for Mistress Phaere?". "Of course I do!", the Painbearer snapped, Rats, what should I ask for? I know nothing about Drow liquors!, she thought with more than a hint of panic, then an idea struck and she gestured to a slave, "You! Bring me the best liquor you have in this place!", There, this should do. I hope.

The slave, a young girl who bore the signs of having being subjected to a very cruel punishment in the past, nodded and a shiver passed through her skinny body, "Yes, Mistress, at once", she murmured, rushing to the bar and coming back as fast as she could with a bottle of the finest wine the tavern could offer, "Here it is, Mistress".

"Good. Now get out of my sight", Veldrin didn’t even look at the poor girl, but as she was paying the bill, she let an extra gold coin slip from her hand onto the tray, as if by mistake. "M-mist...". "I said get out of my sight!", she barked and the barmaid hurried back to the bar without another word.

"You seem to be a capable lot", Solaufein said suddenly, surprising them all, "They must have good trainers in Menzoberranzan", he added shrewdly. "I wouldn’t know, we’re from Ched Nasad", she replied without missing a beat and his lips curved in a small smile as he nodded. "Ah, yes, Ched Nasad, I forgot.

Since it seems like we will have to work together for a while, why don’t you make introductions? I suppose your underlings have names as well". The Ilmatari shrugged, "I don’t see why it should matter, but I will indulge you regardless: this one is my sister Ilivarra", she pointed to Imoen, then to Jaheira, "And she is our handmaiden Jaelryn".

"What about the males?", the Drow warrior asked, a hint of irritation slipping into his voice: he clearly didn’t like the carelessness she showed towards his kin. "Alton, Elkantar and Yazston", she indicated each one of them in turn, "They’re my personal males, gifted to me by my Matron Mother as a reward for a particularly well-executed plan". "I see.

They seem to be in exceptionally good health, certainly better than most of the personal males of the local powerful females I’ve seen". "I need them on the battlefield more often than not, so I must make sure they’re well-fed and healthy: malnourished and crippled fighters are useless, after all", she replied with a shrug, "And if they’re weak, they can’t perform adequately in the bedchamber either, right, male?", she added, unexpectedly grabbing a fistful of Yoshimo’s hair and kissing him hungrily on the lips.

The startled Kozakuran let himself be kissed and did his best to hide his shock, though the experience wasn’t that unpleasant, since the roughness was only for show. Poor Anomen opened his mouth to protest, but a swift kick in the ankle from Jaheira forced him to keep his face impassive and fume in silence. Of course he knew that it was necessary to keep the cover, but...

His train of thought was scattered abruptly, as his betrothed subjected him to the same treatment she’d reserved to Yazston mere seconds before and the Helmite returned the kiss with abandon, forgetting his jealousy in an instant: he could sense her plea for forgiveness in the way her soft lips moved on his, so sweet and warm and in the look she gave him afterwards. I’m sorry, love, her eyes said, Please, please, forgive me, I’m so sorry. He bent his head a little in a subtle nod, letting her know he wasn’t mad at her and he saw her shoulders sag just a bit in relief.

"Well, I see you’re all here", Phaere walked up to them, looking refreshed and regal in her long purple dress, highlighted by a necklace made with a triple line of Moon Stones, "Do you have the wine?". Meg stood immediately and took a seat out for her, "Of course, Mistress Phaere, the best wine this place has in store. You look even more radiant now".

The Drow woman sat down, a languid smile curving her lips, "Why, thank you, Veldrin. You have taste, I see. Male", she addressed Edwin, snapping her fingers, "Pour me some wine". The Thayan obeyed meekly, but his currently-crimson eyes flashed with anger as he passed her the goblet. "I must admit, Veldrin, your recent performance has impressed me and I am surely going to tell my mother of how you rescued me from the Devourers".

Solaufein snorted, his beautiful features twisting with a mixture of anger and annoyance, "Ah, I see: I must have been invisible during the whole fight, then", he spat, but she didn’t even acknowledge him, keeping her gaze on the Ilmatari and sipping her drink. "Ignore the girlish outburst of this worthless male, Veldrin dear.

As I was saying, you have proven yourself capable and I am sure that your abilities will meet my mother’s approval too. If you serve us well, you will be rewarded with riches, power, slaves and of course, you will earn yourself also the favour of Lolth", the daughter of the Matron Mother smiled again and put a hand on Meg’s, though her smile was cold and predatory, "What say you?".

"I say that it would be wonderful, Mistress Phaere", the Human priestess answered, her own lips curving slightly upwards. "Excellent! It’s good to meet a female with an appropriate amount of ambition. As a reward for saving my life, you will have an apartment on the fourth floor of this building as your personal quarters.

A slave will lead you there. Enjoy some rest while you can: I will require a new service of you quite soon", Phaere said, standing to leave and Margaret Dawn stood and bowed. "We will prove ourselves worthy of your trust, Mistress Phaere". "You’d better, or the Spider Pits will be your grave", the Drow woman replied, then she left, but instead of going towards the exit of the tavern, she took a flight of stairs on the left side of the inn, disappearing from view.

"Where is she going?", Ilivarra asked without thinking and immediately bit her tongue, afraid of having made a mistake. Luckily for them all, Solaufein just snorted again, "She’s going to the Pleasure Chambers. The slut", he added under his breath, disgust dripping from his voice, then he pushed his chair back and rose to his feet, "Well, I’ve had enough of your presence for today, so I’m leaving too.

Oh and since I’m responsible for you, at least until you’ll be entrusted to work on your own for the Matron Mother, I would appreciate it if you tried not to get yourselves into trouble". The Painbearer rolled her eyes, "Don’t worry, all we’re going to do now is to go to our private quarters, have a bath and a nice dinner and get some sleep", she said, motioning to her companions, "Let’s go".

As they moved away from the table, a Duergar approached them, trembling and not quite looking them in the eyes, "Mistress Veldrin?". "That’s me. What do you want?". "I was ordered to show you your apartment. Please follow me", he said, leading them up the stairs and along the corridors, until they reached a beautifully carved door made of heavy oak, "Here it is". "Good. Now leave, pathetic rat, before I decide to have you roasted and served for dinner!".

The poor slave ran away in fear and she pushed the door open, but she stopped abruptly in the middle of the room as she took a proper look at it: the floor was covered by a soft luxurious Calishite carpet in red, gold and purple; a comfortable four-seats sofa and five armchairs covered in dark green velvet placed in circle occupied most of the space;

on the left side of the room rested a liquor cabinet, the glasses and bottles clearly visible through the front crystal doors; five doors opened on the main chamber, four of them leading each to a bedroom with a huge bed and a blue carpet and the fifth opening onto a large bathroom with grey mosaic walls.

Three tapestries hung on the walls of the living-room, one a picture of a big black-and-red hairy spider, similar to the one they’d seen in the circus in Athkatla, the second depicting a fight between an army of Drow and a small contingent of Sun Elves (though in all honesty, it was more of a slaughter than a fight, since every single Sun Elf was in the process of being heavily injured, or downright killed) and the third...

Well, Drow are not shy at all, it seems, she thought, blushing: the third tapestry depicted in great detail a very intimate moment between three Drow, two men and a woman. Imoen let out a whistle, "Wow, I bet old G and Puffguts would have a fit, if they knew what we’re looking at now!". Her half-sister cleared her throat and hastily took the tapestry off the wall, opening the nearest closet and stuffing it in as deep as she could, "There, we’re not looking at it anymore".

"Spoilsport". "And proud of it", she turned to Edwin, "Elkantar, do you know of a way to prevent anyone out there from hearing what is being said inside here?". The Thayan nodded, but he didn’t utter a word. "You can speak". "I do, Mistress Veldrin". "Then do it: the sooner, the better". He nodded again, took out a small piece of chalk and some spell components and inscribed the warding runes into the walls and hinges, then he allowed himself a satisfied smile, "Done.

None of those pointy-eared monkeys will hear a single word from now on (Not that it comes as a surprise: I’m the best)". Meg let out a long sigh of relief and sagged on the sofa, "Thank you, Edwin. And guys, I’m sorry for...". "For having been a bitch?", the currently-not-pink-haired thief joked, sitting next to her and poking her in the ribs, "Cause you’ve been a real bitch there, sis. If I didn’t know you, I’d think you’re a true Drow!".

"Uh, thank you. I guess. I hate this act, but there’s no other way", the Ilmatari massaged her temples, then she turned towards the bounty hunter, "Yoshimo, I...". He shook his head, "No apology is needed, sekai no hikari: I understand your reasons. And to be completely honest, I’ve had worse", he added with a mischievous wink and she chuckled.

"I’m glad you’re taking it so well", the young woman shot a look at Anomen, a flash of uncertainty crossing her features, "And you? Can you forgive me?". The knight smiled and sat on her other side, taking her hand in his, "Of course I can, my love: you were just playing your part, but I know where your heart truly lies", he reassured her, kissing her fingers.

"Thank you, honey", she smiled back and gave him a long, passionate kiss, "I love you so much...". "I love you too. Come, let’s see our bedroom". "Do you want to share one with me, even if I’m...Like this?". "Yes. And do you want to share the room with me as well?". "Do you even need to ask?", she giggled and they disappeared into the first bedroom, shutting the door behind themselves.

I want to see Sola as Minsc's witch now! And in an ironic twist he could complain about missing the underground rather than the skies.

LOL, having good old Sola as Minsc's new witch, or rather, wizard would be funny! And he also has a tragic past to brood and whine about, just like Aerie

Ah Phaere, ever gracious.

I know, her ways remind me a lot of Auntie Delcia

The daughter of the Matron Mother huffed, "I’ll have you know, male, that I am perfectly capable of taking care of myself". Says the woman we have just rescued from a fate worse than death, because she was too incapable to save her own ass, the Ilmatari thought, suppressing the urge to roll her eyes, "Mistress Phaere, may I speak?".

Ahhh, clever! Bound to work far better than trying to tell her what to do.

Thank you! Meg knows firsthand how useful flattery can be: after all, she has being travelling with Edwin for nearly three years xD

Hehe, true, that would have blown their cover faster than having Aerie along

Nice try, Sola.

He's a smart and suspicios guy, that's why he has survived this long in Ust Natha

"I see.

Only makes sense.

She made good use of the INT 17 I gifted her with and she didn't even lie...Well, aside from the bedchamber part :-)

Oh  yeah, poor Anomen, this will be rough for him. At least it probably won't be necessary to let things go further than this.

Not to worry, she isn't willing to go all the way with that. And yes, it was very hard for poor Ano to see her smooching with Yoshi

Careful there Eddie, don't pour it down her cleavage.

Truth be told, he was tempted to pour the whole bottle onto her head

The poor slave ran away in fear and she pushed the door open, but she stopped abruptly in the middle of the room as she took a proper look at it: the floor was covered by a soft luxurious Calishite carpet in red, gold and purple; a comfortable four-seats sofa and five armchairs covered in dark green velvet placed in circle occupied most of the space;

Mmm, cozy.

Oh, yes :-) I wanted them to have a nice palce to stay at for once, since I already put them through so much trouble

Oh I dare say he won't complain about the current shape she's in!

I think the idea of being with her while she looks like she's someone else turns him on: in a sense, it's like cheating without actually cheating.

Thanks for reviewing and responding! *smile*
