And the story goes on! Our intrepid heroes will free the inmates and leave Spellhold...For now, at least. I hope you’ll like it *smile*

CHAPTER 37

I'm friends with the monster that's under my bed
Get along with the voices inside of my head
You're trying to save me, stop holding your breath
And you think I'm crazy, yeah, you think I'm crazy…(Eminem feat Rihanna, “The monster”)

The third level of the maze had been the easiest of them, something for which the party members were extremely grateful: they simply had to answer a very long sequence of riddles asked by some crazy spirits and after the last riddle, a ghost who called himself the Coordinator brought them out in the open, on a small balcony facing the sea and bathed in sunlight and declared them free to go.

Imoen smiled blissfully, enjoying the warm rays on her face, "Ah, it’s so great to see and feel the Sun again! You have no idea how much I had missed it these last weeks. Oh, don’t look so downcast, Meg, it wasn’t meant as a jab at you", she added, seeing her half-sister look like a kicked puppy. "I should have come sooner".

"Hey, you came, no? And I’m sure it wouldn’t have taken so long for ya to get here, if there weren’t a good reason for that". "Well, we had to collect a lot of money to pay for the information and the passage on the ship", the Ilmatari sighed, "Those accursed Shadow Thieves wouldn’t have helped us otherwise. But you’ll learn everything about it when we are out of this Godsdamned asylum".

"Can’t wait to hear it! It must be a great story, like those old G used to tell us!". Minsc nodded with a wide smile, "Yes, little Imoen, Minsc will tell you all about our great adventures and the righteous butt-kicking that we have given while you were away! And Boo will make sure I don’t forget the details", he added, when his hamster squeaked loudly. The pink-haired thief laughed, "I don’t doubt it at all, big guy".

They descended the stairs and there, with his hands in his pockets, stood none other than Saemon Havarian, who smiled at seeing them. "Well m…", he was cut off by a gauntleted hand that suddenly seized his throat, slamming him into the nearest wall. "You treacherous wretch!", Anomen snarled, "How dare you show your face around after what you’ve done?".

Meg touched the knight’s arm gently, "You’re strangling him, honey". "He deserves nothing better!". "Yes, but I’d like to hear what he has to say, before killing him off". "As you wish", the Helmite reluctantly let go. "Well, that was rude", the pirate commented, massaging his sore throat, "I’m here to offer some help, you know?".

"Then speak and make it short", the Ilmatari said, crossing her arms on her chest, "We don’t have any time to waste". "I’m sure you will make time for this: Irenicus is in his laboratory now and he has surrounded himself in magical shields. His power is great and I haven’t seen any flaw in his defences". "That’s nothing new".

"Wait! You need an army to defeat him and you have one right here: the deviants may be crazy, but they wield much power. They could be your only chance to take down that monster". Yoshimo arched an eyebrow, "Weren’t you in his employ? Why are you helping us?". Havarian shrugged, "Thing is, I’m afraid he no longer needs my services. And I’ve heard that his way of getting rid of his former employees is quite…Final, if you catch my meaning".

The Painbearer rolled her eyes, "Of course, I should have guessed you were just trying to save your butt. Do you have anything to add? Like where we can find Bodhi, for example". "Well…I don’t know where she is, sorry. But I know that the guy who takes care of the inmates, Lonk, may be corrupted. There, I have been helpful, right? Will you let me live? No hard feelings?".

She observed him for a long moment, letting him stew in his fear, then she nodded, "You can go. But stab us in the back again and you will regret it". "Oh, I wouldn’t dream of it. Good luck to you all!", he bowed and left in a hurry, probably afraid that she might change her mind. "Are we really going to follow his advice, child?", Jaheira asked.

Margaret Dawn bit her lower lip, troubled. "I would rather not use those people as cannon fodder, but I’m afraid we don’t have much choice in this matter. Our priority is finding Bodhi, though". Imoen frowned, "I appreciate that, sis, but ya need your soul back too", she noted. "I want to get yours back first: you’ve been soulless for longer than I, after all".

"But without it, how will you keep the Slayer in check?". "I will do all I can to keep it caged and as I’ve already said, if you see me losing control again, you. Will. Just. Kill. Me", Meg said, hitting her palm with her fist at every word, deadly serious, "So stop worrying. Everything will work out for the best".

Edwin scoffed, "For the best, she says", he muttered to himself, "We may have to slay her and she says “for the best”! The lingering insanity of this place must have affected her somehow". "I will end up in the Abyss anyway", the Ilmatari snapped, "Now or later, it doesn’t make much difference to me. And now enough babbling, we have an army of nutters to collect", she concluded sharply, walking forward.

******************

Gathering the inmates was not an easy task by any means, but with some time and a lot of patience, the adventurers managed to assemble them in a large conference room. Meg cleared her throat, "Please, may I have your attention? We have gathered you here because…". "Tiax is surrounded by fools and madmen!", a Halfling with a hallucinated gaze cut her off, looking around the room wildly, "Tiax is annoyed by this mess! Who is the culprit? Who must be smitten by Tiax’s mighty rage?".

"Uh, well, Jo…Irenicus has…". "Irenicus?", Dili, the little shapeshifting child, cringed, trembling like a leaf, "I took his face once. He got angry. The punishment was...". The Human priestess immediately knelt and hugged the poor girl, stroking her hair, "Shush, my child, it’s all right, he won’t hurt you anymore, I promise", she murmured soothingly.

A Half-Elf man kept on fiddling with the long sleeves of his blue robe, looking around in fear, "He calls the doggies and they BITE the toes and DOWN! BAD DOGGIE!", he shouted, flailing his arms and pushing an imaginary dog away from himself. Aphril, the seer, shivered, "He is cold. Always cold, through all the planes. Nobody can see him and still nobody walks where he walks".

"Shut up, you miserable simians!", Edwin exploded, exasperated by the ramblings of the inmates which were starting to give him a headache, "Now you will go downstairs and use your pathetic powers to help us in taking Irenicus down like the rabid beast he is, is that clear?". Tiax shot him a condescending look, shaking his head, "Tiax does not deem you worthy of helping Him in this task. But you can watch, if you like", he conceded magnanimously, then he cast a spell and teleported the whole group in the laboratory without warning.

The elven wizard was scribbling some notes on a parchment, when he heard the sound of the teleport and his head whipped around, his eyes widening in surprise, "What…You have freed all of my test subjects?", he addressed the Painbearer, stunned, "I must admit I would have never expected something this crazy from you". She shrugged, "Yeah, well, a crazy situation requires crazy measures. Where is Bodhi, Jon?".

"She has already left and I will join her soon". "I see. I guess you won’t tell me the exact location, then". "I won’t, no. But I don’t doubt that you will manage to find that out all the same: you are full of resources, as this little charade shows quite well", he said, his fingers tapping on the parchment he had been writing on just moments before.

Minsc frowned, raising his enchanted halberd, "Why are you talking to the evil wizard, little Meg? We must give him the butt-kicking he deserves!". Irenicus just cocked his head to the side, "Be my guest, if you think you can best me", he said, unimpressed. The Rashemi didn’t need to be told twice and with a war cry, he lunged at the wizard. The others joined him in the fight with their weapons and spells, while Meg avoided casting any offensive spell, choosing instead to focus on protecting her companions and healing the wounded.

After a long battle, an enchanted arrow managed to pierce Jon’s defences and leave a burn mark on his left bicep and the party members and inmates cheered…But he simply evoked another magical shield to surround himself with and gulped down a healing potion, completely unruffled, "A good shot, Yoshimo, I give you that", he commented, "Well, I have no more time to waste with you.

My associates are waiting for me and my homeland will pay soon. You can keep the asylum, I have no need of it anymore", he intoned a spell and before they could react, he vanished into a “Dimension Door”, leaving them not only battered and bruised, but also extremely frustrated. "No!", Jaheira ran as fast as she could, but she was too late to stop him and she kicked a nearby chair in anger, "NO! Damn him, damn him, damn him!".

Margaret Dawn put a hand on her shoulder, while quickly snatching the parchment from the table with the other, "Calm down, Jae, we will find him, you’ll see. Now we need to rest and then we’ll search this place for clues, okay?". "Okay", the druidess sighed, "Do we still have some rations?". "Sure. Come, let’s have a snack".

"Uhm, Meg?", Aerie called, "I think you should see this". The Human priestess joined her and realized that the glass tube she had been trapped in was not the only one in the room: lined up against the walls were a dozen others, each one containing a dead body dressed in the typical black leathers of the Shadow Thieves of Amn.

"Well, now we know why Bodhi needed so many Shadow Thieves", she commented, then she noted a flash of platinum blond hair in a nearby tube, "I guess Sime will not meet us on the path to Brynnlaw". "Should we take them out of here?", Anomen asked hesitantly, "We could at least give them a proper burial. I mean, I know they were criminals, but still...".

"Much as I would like it, we just can’t carry all of them out. We can pray for them, but their bodies will stay here: we must take care of the living now", Meg added, gesturing towards the former inmates. "I...Yes, you’re right, of course", he nodded, lowering his eyes. She smiled softly, "Anomen?". "Yes, my lady?". "I’m so proud of you", she said, kissing him deeply, "Let’s pray for these poor souls".

*******************

Searching the place turned out to be quite profitable, for they found a small pile of assorted gems, a Bag of Holding, nearly ten thousand gold coins and a key with a strange shape. Since they found nothing that could give them even the slightest clue to Irenicus’ current destination, the adventurers decided to leave the asylum, bringing the former inmates along and as they reached the first floor, they saw a familiar figure in the corridor.

"Why are you still here?", Meg asked, annoyed and Saemon smiled. "Well, I am here to help. The doors are magically locked, you see". "Rats in a basket", she cursed, "So how exactly can you help us?". "I have a spell at my disposal that can bring all of you out of this place. If you promise not to kill me afterwards, I mean", the pirate added, shooting a worried look at Anomen. "Yes, I promise.

Before we go, do you have any information to share about your former employer?". "All I know is that he has left the asylum via a Portal that leads to the Underdark, but you will need a key to open it. And I also know his final destination: a Tethyrian city named Suldanesselar. We can get there before he arrives, if we take my ship", Havarian said and she could sense his hope and fear. "Take us out of here first. We’ll discuss the details after a good rest".

"As you wish, beautiful miss", he bowed with an exaggerate flourish and cast the teleporting spell, bringing the whole group on the rocky path leading to the asylum, "Here we are, safe and sound! I have some minor preparations to make for the journey, but I’ll meet you at the tavern before tomorrow". "Yes, yes, see you later", she made a dismissing gesture and led her companions and the former inmates to the Vulgar Monkey.

When they got there, Margaret Dawn immediately secured some food for the “magical deviants”, then talked to Sanik and Claire about Dili and the couple was more than happy to adopt the child and become a family. The rest of the former inmates would be sent to the local temple of Ilmater, where they would be under the care of Revered Mother Corinna.

Settled the matter of their charges, she secured seven rooms for the party members instead of eight, since she and Anomen would officially share one. Imoen let out a low whistle and clapped her hands at the news, "Wow, you aren’t wasting any time, uh? Way to go, bookferret!", she exclaimed, winking at her half-sister.

Meg nodded, but her smiled was a bit strained, It’s the only way to go, since I don’t have any time to waste anymore, she thought. Anomen, guessing the direction of her thoughts, took her hand in his, "Don’t worry, my love", he murmured in her ear, "I won’t let you die. We will come out of this together, you’ll see".

"I’m not worried", she replied with a more genuine smile, "When you’re with me, I fear nothing". He kissed her fingers, moved, "I will do everything I can to be worthy of your trust and your love, my lady". The young woman stroked his cheek and kissed him softly, "You already are, you always have been and you always will be. Never doubt it, beloved".

*******************

The Painbearer woke up in the dream-Candlekeep again, but this time the one standing in front of her wasn’t Irenicus, it was Imoen…Or rather, something pretending to be Imoen. "You’re late. I told you you would be late, didn’t I? You will learn to trust me", the creature said. Margaret Dawn rolled her eyes, "You know, I much preferred you as a big mutant crocodile-lobster".

"Silence! You will receive a gift, a powerful and precious gift", Imoen/Slayer cocked her head to the side, studying her intently, "Why do you worry about your friends? They’re weak, they’re useless. Leave them behind and become what you were born to be.

You know that, no matter how many people you surround yourself with, you are alone". "I’m not…". "Oh, yes you are. Your brother is dead. And without him, you are lost". Meg opened her mouth to protest, but closed it and lowered her head, clenching her fists tightly. "Ah, you don’t deny it, then. You know I’m telling the truth. Good. You will learn to trust me.

There is great power in your heritage", the monster’s tone became more persuasive, "Just accept who you are, use this power and you will fulfil your purpose, you will become something more, something grander. I am you, I know what is best for you". "You only know what is best for yourself", the Ilmatari shot back, an anger she knew all too well starting to rise in her chest as her body twisted and changed.

"Well, maybe in the end you will lose yourself, that’s true…But what is an eternity of nothingness, when you wield the power to kill everything that crosses your path? It’s as easy as counting…", the Imoen/Slayer made an arcane gesture and three forms appeared in front of the young priestess, making her rage flare up even stronger: Gorion, Rieltar Anchev and Kivan.

Her transformation complete, Meg let out a furious roar and threw herself at Kivan first, tearing him to pieces, while the fake Imoen counted. "One…". Rieltar was killed then, his body reduced to a pile of scorched flesh by black demonic flames. "Two…". Gorion followed them soon enough, his head cut off by a razor-sharp claw. "Three…".

The Painbearer breathed heavily, her eyes hungrily scanning the room for another victim, but before she could charge, “Imoen” fell to the floor with an agonized scream and still her voice resounded in the air. "Four…". A sudden pain exploded in Margaret Dawn’s back as a dagger plunged deep in her heart and the voice came one last time, in a triumphant shout. "FIVE!".

*******************

"Meg? Wake up, beloved, it’s all right". She started awake and sat up, desperately gasping for air and slowly she became aware of a gentle hand stroking her hair, soothing her. "Shush, calm down, Meg, it was just a nightmare", the Helmite said, his hand slipping down her back in a soft caress. She let out a trembling sigh and snuggled against him, "Hold me".

"With pleasure", he held her to his chest and placed a soft kiss on her cheek, "Fear not, beloved, you’re safe. It was just a nightmare". "No, it was more than that, I can feel it". "What do you mean?". "I…I think that…I have the power to become the Slayer at will now", she whispered and felt him freeze in her arms.

There was a long silence, then he spoke hesitantly, "It may be a good thing". She drew back to look him in the eye, baffled, "Good? How can this be good?". "Think on it, my love: if you can turn into that…Thing…At will, this means you have once again full control over it, no?", the knight reasoned.

His betrothed mulled over it for a while, admiration clear in her eyes as she regarded him, "Yes…I hadn’t thought of it, but you’re right", she smiled warmly and stroked his cheek, "Thank you, honey. You’re a gift from the Gods". "I could easily say the same of you, you know", Anomen winked and Meg chuckled. "Yes, but you’re clearly biased".

He shrugged with an impish grin, "I’ve never denied it". "What! Oh, you…Come here", she took his face in her hands and gave him a deep, passionate kiss, "There, I hope you’ve learned your lesson". "Uhm…No, I think I need a repetition. Maybe more than one". "Well, if you need them so badly…", she giggled and they lay back under the covers, her fears forgotten for the moment.

Imoen knows she came as fast as she could, of course. And in character, all of my PC:s do too, it's just out of character I need to do all the sidequests first. ;)

Mostly because it's better than trying to get away from the island with his ship in embargo and all that.

She observed him for a long moment, letting him stew in his fear, then she nodded, "You can go. But stab us in the back again and you will regret it". "Oh, I wouldn’t dream of it. I always felt bad about using the inmates as well, but at least you don't bring the little girl to the fight, that would have been just too much. I hope she got away ok afterwards.

Tiax shot him a condescending look, shaking his head, "Tiax does not deem you worthy of helping Him in this task. But you can watch, if you like", he conceded magnanimously, then he cast a spell and teleported the whole group in the laboratory without warning.

I want to see Edwin do a boasting battle vs Tiax now. :)

Aw, that's sweet! He really has grown.

Nice touch with the different faces she saw in there.

He's quite right there, far better to at least be able to make the choice to use it or not.

Hehe, true. I solved the "we-must-get-her-out-as-soon-as-possible" versus "we-are-wasting-time-by-saving-every-missing-cat-around" problem with blaming it all on the Shadow Thieves and their greed

Mostly because it's better than trying to get away from the island with his ship in embargo and all that.

Definitely! Saemon thinks his chances are better with them than without them...But he's wrong, oh so wrong!

I always felt bad about using the inmates as well, but at least you don't bring the little girl to the fight, that would have been just too much. I hope she got away ok afterwards.

Not to worry, in here I made sure she will be taken good care of : Sanik and his wife adopted her and now she's safe and happy with her new parents  :-)

I want to see Edwin do a boasting battle vs Tiax now. :)

LOL, I have the feeling our Eddie would best Tiax hands down!

Edwin *frowns*: I'm not sure if that was meant as a compliment...

Me *snickering*: Sure it was, darling, sure it was

"Well, now we know why Bodhi needed so many Shadow Thieves", she commented, then she noted a flash of platinum blond hair in a nearby tube, "I guess Sime will not meet us on the path to Brynnlaw". Thanks! I like showing his more mature side from time to time

They are really a lovely couple, aren't they :-)

The Painbearer breathed heavily, her eyes hungrily scanning the room for another victim, but before she could charge, “Imoen” fell to the floor with an agonized scream and still her voice resounded in the air. "Four…". A sudden pain exploded in Margaret Dawn’s back as a dagger plunged deep in her heart and the voice came one last time, in a triumphant shout. "FIVE!".

Nice touch with the different faces she saw in there.

Thank you! It was an obliged choice, considering the background I gave her and her peculiar feelings for Irenicus. I had toyed with the idea of switching Kivan with Bodhi, but Meg hates Kivan so much more than the Vampiress

Heh, well after passing the Test for knightood, Ano's wisdom grows from 12 to 16 and this growth shows in his behaviour and thoughts. As for using the Slayer, yes, she is now able to keep it from taking control over her body, but she still needs some practice to master its strenght on her own.

Thanks for commenting *smile*
