In the Depths of the Maze

Anomen sighed; rubbing at where the ropes had cut into his wrists. The party had been pulled from the cells at Spellhold, taken deep down, underneath the asylum. It was cold. His breath smoked in front of his face. He was worried. Where was Elshana? Irenicus had taken her; and jailed the entire group. Now, they were being let by one of the vampire's thralls, being told that they would be freed. Had that mage won?

“Boo does not like this, priest.” The hulking form of Minsc was a grateful sight. He was a powerful sword arm; and if this came to a fight for Lady Elshana, he knew the beserker was loyal to her. Unlike some. . .

By Helm, why had I not seen? Why did I not see that viper who wormed his way into her trust? The betrayal of Yoshimo still burned him; it has caught them all by surprise. Helm, the Watcher. Why did I not see? He shook his head. There would be time to worry about such matters later.

Ahead of them, the vampire thrall led them down a long flight of stairs down into what looked like an amphitheater. Four sets of stairs came down into a square arena; in the centre of the arena was a blue and gold inset.

Minsc's heavy steps echoed as they stepped down the stone stairs. Jaheira's lighter steps were bringing up the rear.

“What is this place?” Kelsey's nervous whisper echoed off the ceiling, magnified by the room to a shout.

“This place, little mousey, is where the fun begins!” The voice was that of that damnable vampire. Bodhi He clenched his fist tighter. Weapons or not, he would not let that abomination cause any more destruction.

“What do you want, unnatural beast! Where is Elshana!” Jaheira's clipped voice cut through the silence. “Show yourself!”

The laughter that followed was evil. He could find no other word for it. It was laughter without joy, mocking laughter at the expense of someone else's pain. The group of adventurers clustered together, back to back, all of them looking for both the source of the laughter and the attack they knew was coming.

“You know,” the sound of boots at the top of the opposite staircase drew all four sets of eyes, “you said you wanted her back, druid.”

Bodhi appeared at the top of one of the staircases, her pale skin in stark relief to the dimness of the dimness of the amphitheater. Her black eyes glimmered in the dimness, and Anomen -knew- that something was horribly wrong even before he saw the form in her arms. Elshana was limp in Bodhi's arms, her black hair unbound. Her face was ice pale, her eyes were closed.

“No. . . “ There were no whispers in this place. Jaheira stepped forward; a snarl on her face. “Release her! NOW!” Anomen stepped forward beside her, raising his fists to attack.

Kelsey too stepped forward; a flick of fire arcing around the tips of his fingers; Minsc's entire form trembled with barely-constrained fury.

“Of course; if that's really what you want. . . “ Bodhi dropped Elshana; who tumbled down the flight of stairs like a dropped doll; and fell limp to the stone floor below.

“Elshana!” It was Jaheira who got their first, Anomen a moment later. He ran his hands along her cold face; brushed a strand of hair from her cheek. She didn't stir, didn't move. She wasn't breathing.

“She's dead.” Jaheira looked up at Bodhi, murder in her hazel eyes. “You – Irenicus killed her.”
