For those who don't remember my dearest PC, Narg, let it be sung far and loud of his tales. This is the dramatization of what would happen if you really did min/max a PC, how he would see the world.

For reference, dear Narg the Great's stats:

STR 18(00)
DEX 18
CON 18
INT 3
WIS 8
CHA 7

And now... the story!

Narg, the greatest of all Bhaalspawn, found himself confronted with a challenge of the utmost cunning and trickery. A problem so confounding that his brain twisted and rebelled at the mere thought of such mental legerdemain. This truly must be a test of heroes, for none but the wisest and the strongest could possibly challenge and defeat such a daunting task.

Brow heavily furrowed, he glared balefully at his opponent. He was the Hero of Baldur’s Gate! He slew mighty Sarevok and crushed all doppelganger infestations. He could solve this riddle! He would solve this riddle! None could stop him!!!

“Narg?” asked his boon companion and long time ally Jaheira.

“Yar?” he asked, only sparing the briefest of acknowledgements lest this problem escape his grasp.

“This one,” she tapped the heavy boot with her finger. “Goes on this foot. We painted the L on it so you’d know.”

“Knew dat.” He glared at the boot and it’s bright L. Brow furrowing, he picked up the boot. And lifted his foot.

Now, if he could only remember how the boot went on his foot…

And kiddies, what do we use the internet for?

(For those of you who don't know... please reference Avenue Q with the help of the TEEN TITANS!)

Heaven forbid that! In fact, if it looks like we are, NARG WILL RIDE AGAIN!

(As soon as he figures out what a horse is)

And he'll be riding it backwards, won't he?

BAM!

But I guess that's really the thing about AD&D, with those kind of stats - as in a munchkin - you'd really ask how they would do things if you lace it with reality.

That's why I was really stupefied when I played Fallout 2, and did a min/max on my character. He really can't talk any sense without being chased away.

There is an extremely high probability of that, yes. :) :(

It's always been the one thing that CRPGs really never do well, is punishing the munchkins with hitting them with dump stat moves. I mean, some pen and paper DMs don't do much there, but most of them do. If you've got a low wis and int, they're gonna hose ya. And it's gonna be funnnnnnnnny. :)

Right. It's why I've always liked the Fallout series and Black Isle/Bioware's work. They do a good job of handling that and have been getting better with every run. Fallout 3 with responses based on skills/stats, yeah. Good stuff. :(

Thanks for reading and commenting!

Don't worry Narg... I'm sure Jan will invent velcro soon enough, so once you've got em on you won't have trouble with those pesky laces

Was there a Fallout character called Narg?

Useless fact of the week:

This task could have been a lot easier for Narg (depending on how far advanced you think FR is in terms of footwear); having seperate boots for left and right didn't really come into widespread use until the 1800's. Before then every boot was straight so it didn't matter which foot you put it on.

In fact, think that could be a quiz; work that seemingly pointless factoid into the plot of a story

I'm already thinking up some time travel/murder mystery thing where the footprints are a vital clue

There was indeed a Fallout character named Narg. Fallout 2. He was a good deal smarter than this Narg, though.

Coutelier,

Huh, didn't even think about a Fallout relationship, but I guess, there he is. Course that Narg is a bit brighter than our Narg here.

As to the boots, didn't know that, but I guess I shouldn't be that surprised that handedness didn't come to boots for a long time. It does take a lot of work to make them handed. And... I don't even want to think about Jansen Brand Velcro.

Ever.

And I mean it.
