Well, I am back from my trip and here is a longer chapter of Beloved Child. Where the party gets to meet new people and see new things! Drow people and things!

As usual, please enjoy.

Beloved Child 52

The approach to Ust Natha`s gates went through a corridor of high walls and rock face. It was a prefect place for an ambush and Groder wondered just how many snipers were lying out there.

“We will let Viconia do the talking.” Jaheira said. “Remember what we planned.”

“Jaheira is correct.” Viconia explained. “We are strangers here and even if we bear house insignias it does not mean that we are safe. Here we are nothing before we have proven ourselves. Remember, subservience to those above your rank, no mercy to those below and absolute obedience to the servants of Lolth.”

She was met by nods.

“Steel yourselves and remember your roles. Let me and Jaheira do most of the talking and stay close at all times.” The Drow continued.

As they approached the large gates to the Drow city they were stopped by a throng of armed guards.

“Halt!” One of them cried. “Who are you and what is your business here? Ust Natha is at war with the darthiir and the city is locked down.”

“Silence worm!” Viconia barked back. “We are reinforcements from Ched Nasad. We are expected.”

“You are late!” The guard spat back. “The Matrons are very displeased. You will report to Saloufein outside the melee warrior’s guild. He will be your commander while you are here. Pass by the market and keep going past the inn. You can’t miss it.”

“It has the sour looking male in front of it. He has been waiting a while” Another guard cut in and was rewarded with some laughter.

The guards parted and let the party through, giving them all suspicious looks. As they left the corridor of stone and wrought wall that made up the entrance to Ust Natha they came upon an expansive platform. In the massive cavern that made up Ust Natha stalactites the size of castles reached down and equally massive stalagmites rose to meet them. The broad platform walkway that snaked around them rested above a dark seemingly never ending chasm. In the distance, almost in the centre of the city rose if it had it been viewed from above a building shaped like a spider. The stalagmites and stalactites where exquisitely carved out with windows, balconies and walkways.

“The work that must have gone into this…” Nalia murmured. “I wonder how they look inside.”

“The grandest of human palaces pales before it.” Viconia said. Her eyes had taken on a different, softer light then usual.

The platform they had stepped out on held the city’s market and despite the fact that a war was going on rather crowded. Stall after stall with merchants hawking their wares stretched out before them and a throng of Drow moved about on the market. Groder reflected on how normal it all looked and could have been taking place in any city anywhere. He wondered briefly what he had expected; Drow did not exist in vacuum after all. He supposed it all went to show something but he did not know what.

“These are mostly commoners.” Viconia told the party and the made their way through the crowds. “Maybe a daughter or a son of house that wishes for anonymity. A noble would usually have guards with them; assassins are not uncommon after all.”

As the platform narrowed and turned to a broad walkway, the crowds thinned but it was still busy. Large spiders ambled along seemingly having no purpose; slaves from a multitude of races were driven on by their masters.

They passed a large stalagmite that Viconia pointed out as a tavern. Passing that by the party went by several other of the great improvised buildings. Before one stood a one-eyed Drow female whose face was heavily scarred. She was giving out instructions to a group of warriors. The Drow female spared a hateful glance at the party as it passed.

Eventually they reached the melee fighter’s guild, the stalactite that held the guild was crisscrossed with stairs on the outside and a multitude of doors were easily spotted. A lone figure sat on the stairs that presumably led to its main entrance. The Drow male seemed lost in thought and a frown was playing on his slim face. It made him look sulky though as his face had some feminine features. Clad in light chain mails, he shifted gracefully.

“Finally walking around in gloomy caverns paid off.” Imoen whispered and smiled slightly. “Erotic adventures here I come.”

“And I though Groder and Haer`Dalis were the only ones I needed to keep a leash on.” Viconia sighed and shook her head theatrically.

**

Solaufein sat on the stairs that led up to the male melee fighter’s guild, snugly secured in a large stalactite. He was in a foul mood. First Phaere had disappeared, which annoyed him and now he was supposed to act as a chaperon for a bunch of outsiders from Ched Nasad. Of course it was only him and few others left at the guild. The rest had gone into the war effort. Their recently launched war against the surface elves had come as some surprise to them all but a welcome one for most.

Solaufein had to admit that Ardulace the first matron of the city and also Phaeres mother was rather ingenious. The size and the position of the noble house in the hierarchy decided how large a troop it was to raise for the war. The smaller and weaker it was, the smaller the troop it had to provide. Ardulace own House Despana was the first house of Ust Natha and the largest one so they had provided the most troop but also kept enough so no ambitious lower house would try their hand at toppling it. The scheme was perfect; each house kept enough troops to be secure against other houses yet provided enough to be unable to attack another. Solaufein knew that even in war, even in such a unifying war as against the darthiir, treachery would come to the Drow as natural as breathing. Lolth had taught her children well and Solaufein believed that it would in the end drive his people away from the spider queen, either into the arms of scheming Vhaerun or more hopefully his own patron, Eilistraee

“Are you Solaufein?” Came a voice. He looked up.

They were an odd collection. The females in the lead were about the same age. One of them had long flowing hair and seductive smile played on her lips. The other had a stern expression and gave of the impression that she was not to be crossed. Solaufein reflected that the stern looking females braided hair looked odd. The older of the two males looked like he belonged more in a brothel then in a group that was supposed to aid in their war effort.

The only other male was a surprise though. He was only a boy. The boy kept glancing about and had an axe strapped to his back. The last two females had to be sisters; they were young as well and looked almost identical down to their short bobs of hair expect that the more mischievous looking one had pink hair. Solaufein wondered if Ched Nasad had sent its undesirables to support them.

“Yes.” He rose and shifted his face to a scowl getting into character. “And you are from Ched Nasad? Do not think that because there are females among you that you will be treated any different from rothe until you have proved yourselves.”

“That is why we are here, male.” Viconia emphasized the last word. “I am Viconia Hun`ett, first daughter of the house Hun´ett.”

“Jaheira Hun´ett, second daughter of the house Hun`ett.” Jaheira said. Then she waved lazily at Groder. “This is Veldrin, third boy of house Hun´ett.”

“The rest are in the employ of House Hun´ett.” Viconia filled in.

Solaufein nodded but still thought it odd that they would bring along someone as young as the boy.

“Follow me; Handmaiden Imrae awaits us by the city entrance. She will have the details of your labour.” He said curtly and began walking.

**

They followed Solaufein back towards the market and the entrance to the city. During their walk Imoen watched Solaufein and this was not lost on the Drow warrior. When he glanced in her direction, she winked at him.

Following Solaufein they passed through the market once more and found themselves by some elevated platforms holding tables and chairs. Atop one of these platforms stood a lone Drow female, she made for an imposing sight, distinctly larger then Solaufein whom had climbed the small stairs to reach her. She lazily held a wicked looking many headed whip. A look of distain seemed etched on her rough face.

“I have brought the ones from Ched Nasad, handmaiden.” Solaufein said and bowed.

She raked the party with her red eyes and then exploded in rage.

“Only six!” The handmaiden Imrae yelled. “Do your matrons mock us? Did they not believe that we strike against the surface scum!?” The Drow woman was so angry that veins bulged in her neck.

“We were ambushed handmaiden.” Viconia said. “The one who lead us was a fool and fell swiftly to the vile worshipers of Ghaunadaur.”

Imrae raised an eyebrow.

“Did you defeat them then or fled and hoped that your cowardice would not be discovered.” Then she looked at Groder. “You even bring a child with you.”

“Veldrin is very unruly and it seems even flaying the skin of his back taught him nothing so our matron sent him with us to either learn his place or die.” Viconia said. “If you doubt us, we shall prove ourselves.”

Imrae`s mouth was a straight line and the handmaiden seemed to weigh her options.

“Very well, you will go with Solaufein to rescue the first daughter of House Despana. She has been taken by the devourers and is being taken to their city. Failure is not an option and the Matron Mother expect even more from you Solaufein.”

Solaufein nodded his head but seemed hesitant and a bit irritated at being included.

“But…” He began hesitantly but the handmaiden cut him off.

“Do you intend to disobey?” Imrae hissed and there was certain malicious and sadistic edge in both her voice and her eyes.

“Of course not, Handmaiden.” He replied quickly.

“Good, now make haste and do not imagine you can run away. The driders would find you eventually.” The last part was directed at the party.

When the handmaiden left, Viconia sneered openly at the woman’s retreating back.

“Let us make haste then.” She announced. Solaufein had already begun moving away.

**

The party trailed behind Solaufein as they marched back into the gloomy caverns. Eventually they made their way back to the wooden bridge and stream they had passed much earlier. Solaufein pointed beyond it.

“Over there begins the devourers tunnels. You know what I speak of yes?” He said.

“Illithid?” Groder piped up.

“Yes, that is what they call themselves, smarter then you look then…” The drow warrior muttered and before Groder could answer back, Jaheira swatted him lightly on the back of the head to make the youth be quiet.

“There are some rock formations ideal for an ambush just on the other side.” Solaufein continued. “I will be busy bringing them out of astral travel so you must strike swiftly.”

Said and done, the party positioned itself behind the large outcroppings of rock that rested almost in semi circle beyond the wooden bridge. Solaufein chanted quietly and after a while it seemed that the air seemed to shimmer all around them. Suddenly as if ripped out of the very air, three mind flyers and three umber hulks appeared. In the middle of that alien group wobbled a Drow woman. The mind flayers reacted quickly with silence and grace.

One headed for Solaufein while another pointed at the rocks the party was hiding behind. The umber hulks roared and charged. The mind flayers hovered around their captive. The party charged.

An umber hulks mandibles clamped down on Jaheira`s staff and tried to bite the hard wood. The druid pulled the staff back and managed to dislodge it from the insect’s mouth. Then she swung the staff in an overhead motion and brought it down on hard on the umber hulks head. The giant thing squealed once and fell to the ground with a dull thump.

Viconia was chanting and a warm blue light spread over the party. She had to duck a swing from an umber hulk immediately after she was finished. The thing howled in pain as Nalia and Imoen hurled small burning stones at it. As the stones hit they exploded in small balls of flame. The umber hulk hurled itself forward and then remained still on the ground.

Solaufein held his own against the mind flayer that had went for him as the melee combat was the psyonics forte. Haer`Dalis was dancing around both an umber hulk and the mind flayer hovering near Phaere. The drow woman seemed more lucid and her eyes flitted back and forth drinking in the battle. Viconia chanted again and then she moved so fast her outlining became blurred. She harassed the final umber hulk by moving constantly around it and hitting it with the flail of ages. Freezing its arms, burning its back and melting its eyes. The thing drew a final sigh and fell down dead. Haer`Dalis and Jaheira held their ground against the mind flayer that had remained near Phaere, it had summoned a flying sword to do battle for it. While Jaheira deflected the swords blows, Haer`Dalis darted around it and managed to slash a deep gash in the mind flayers abdomen. Imoen and Nalia had turned their attention to the mind flayer that was attacking Solaufein.

Groder circled the last mind flayer and darted around a few rocks and then took a running jump off one of them. The flayer had followed him with its milky dead gaze and now brought up its hands to cast a spell. The youth came to fast towards the alien sorcerer for it to have time to finish its spell. A strong swipe in mid air with his axe brought Groder of balance but the axe slid neatly through the neck of the mind flayer. The young bhaalspawn hit the ground hard and let out a ragged breath of pain.

Viconia dragged him up and when he looked around the battle was over. Six dead bodies littered the cavern floor. The Drow female stood aloof among them. She was young and in a word petite, certainly smaller then the Handmaiden that had been so welcoming to the party. She stepped over to the party completely ignoring Solaufein as he approached her.

“So who are these foreigners that have professed such skill, especially you male? What is your name?” Phaere said raking her eyes over Haer`Dalis.

“They are from Ched Nasad and this is…” Solaufein began but Phaere interrupted him.

“I am sure they can speak for themselves Solaufein even if you cannot.” She said with venom in her voice.

“Haer`Dalis of Ched Nasad.” Haer`Dalis smiled slightly and bowed before Phaere.

“Hmm… courteous, maybe you could learn something from him, Solaufein.” The woman said. “I will be returning to Ust Natha now, rest assured that your status has risen in the eyes of the matrons with this. I will see to it that rooms are arranged for you and I wish to see you all of you in the tavern tomorrow.”

“I should accompany you…” Solaufein began again.

“No, I shall go alone. You should learn to listen better.” With that Phaere Despana disappeared over the bridge and into the gloom.

“May the spider queen bite at her black heart.” Solaufein growled and anger was painted on his features. “I shall follow her to make sure that she doesn’t get herself into more trouble. You all heard her, be at the tavern tomorrow.” Solaufein took of into the gloom after Phaere.

Haer`Dalis was smiling slightly as he looked after the two departing drow and Imoen muttered about shoving a fire arrow up a certain noble females butt.

“So what was all that about?” Jaheira asked.

Viconia shrugged.

“She just acts like most noble daughters do.” She said.

“They always decide to run off into potentially dangerous situations?” Groder asked.

“Only the short lived ones.” Viconia smiled

**

Once back in the city, the party located the tavern fairly quickly. It was a large establishment that apart from a bar and rooms also held a gladiatorial arena. The tavern was well populated as the day had begun turning into evening and night.

As they arranged for their rooms, an affair which simply involved getting the keys as a representative of the House Despana had already made all the arraignments, Viconia had to chase of a male that had asked Nalia if she would be interested in the pleasure chambers.

“What are those?” Nalia asked after the man had scurried off.

“Exactly what they sound like.” Viconia answered with a broad smile.

Nalia blushed.

The rooms they had recived lay on one of the top floors and were reminicant of the one they had back in Athkatla. There was a common room and several bedrooms. Rooms where quickly devided among them and occupied.

**

In her room Nalia had drawn Yoshimo`s blade and as she let the blade gilde through the air, she felt clumsy. Imoen entered the room and sat down on the bed next to the young mage.

“So, how are you feeling?” The pinkhaired mage asked the redheaed one.

Nalia smiled sadly.

“As well as could be expected I suppose.” She said. “In all honesty I have been been a bit overwhelmed by all Drow, it is a bit facinating actually.”

“It is kind of neat.” Imoen agreed. “But I know one Drow I wouldn`t mind being overwhelmed by.” She winked mischivouslly at Nalia. The young noble smiled slightly. “Solaufein is gorgeous.” Imoen then added.

This is…” Imoen beamed a bright smile and shining eyes. She clasped her hands togheter. “…a maiden’s first love.”

“A… maiden`s first… love?” Nalia looked surprised. “But…”

“What?” Imoen said looking shocked but her eyes were filled with laughter. “You think I am some kind of wanton pinkhaired wench?”

Nalia held up her hands.

“No… no… I didn`t mean…” She began but stopped when she saw Imoen almost bursting with contained laughter.

“Oh you…” Nalia said and hit Imoen with a pillow.

Ust Natha was beautiful and terrible like all Drow cities. It was not her native Menzoberassan though and there had been times when she ached for that place. Viconia looked out the window on the masses below, on the equiste towers and platforms. This was her home yet they where all strangers. Why did it all feel so alien? She wanted a home, she wanted stability but these where not to be found here among her own kind. She had thought that feelings of home and belonging would come as soon as she stepped a foot in the city but they had not come.

“I thought you would look a bit happy to be home so to speak.” Groder said from behind her, suprising the woman. “But is suppose things change.”

“Changes hmm…?” The Drow mused and placed a hand on Groders head as he came up beside her.

“Changes, big sis.” The youth responded.

Viconia halted a moment, surprised. She looked at the young human. He looked somehow even younger now, in this Drow disguise. Viconia wondered if Jaheria was right, that he was far too young and that she should leave him be. She patted his head as she decided that she would think about it.

Oh, so Viconia gets a moment of character development, and Groder gets a moment of character development? Love it...

...although, on the other hand... :scratches head:

I'll never understand women, 'twould seem.

Ah. No. I get it! Viccy is not opposed to the idea of the female learning the drow superiority in general... but she wants Sola for herself! AHA!

“It is kind of neat.” Imoen agreed. “But I know one Drow I wouldn`t mind being overwhelmed by.” She winked mischivouslly at Nalia. The young noble smiled slightly. “Solaufein is gorgeous.” Imoen then added.

I'm really liking the rapport you're building between Imoen and Nalia! (And... ooh, Imoen's already cute in her insistence on her little side-quest.)

Also, I won't snip, but I very much enjoyed Sola's thoughts and his perspective on the party. :)

For once it is reassuring to have Viconia along. ;)

“Steel yourselves and remember your roles. Let me and Jaheira do most of the talking and stay close at all times.” The Drow continued.

Interesting how she entrusts Jaheira enough as well. :D

“The grandest of human palaces pales before it.” Viconia said. Her eyes had taken on a different, softer light then usual.

It’s like the dark version of Suldanessellar. Elves are still elves even if they are dark.

As the platform narrowed and turned to a broad walkway, the crowds thinned but it was still busy. Large spiders ambled along seemingly having no purpose; slaves from a multitude of races were driven on by their masters.

Those spiders always remind me of cows in India. ;)

“Finally walking around in gloomy caverns paid off.” Imoen whispered and smiled slightly. “Erotic adventures here I come.”

Ugh. Methinks maybe your Imoen would be a good match with Haer. ;)

He is correct, Haer does belong in a brothel. ;)

“That is why we are here, male.” Viconia emphasized the last word. “I am Viconia Hun`ett, first daughter of the house Hun´ett.”

Goodie, at least they can now retain their names for our convenience. ;)

They followed Solaufein back towards the market and the entrance to the city. During their walk Imoen watched Solaufein and this was not lost on the Drow warrior. When he glanced in her direction, she winked at him.

*sighs at Imoen* :)

“Only six!” The handmaiden Imrae yelled. “Do your matrons mock us? Did they not believe that we strike against the surface scum!?” The Drow woman was so angry that veins bulged in her neck.

It does seem pretty insulting, doesn’t it? :)

“Very well, you will go with Solaufein to rescue the first daughter of House Despana. She has been taken by the devourers and is being taken to their city. Failure is not an option and the Matron Mother expect even more from you Solaufein.”

Ah, the charming Phaere, here we come. ;)

“Over there begins the devourers tunnels. You know what I speak of yes?” He said.

“Illithid?” Groder piped up.

Oh wow, he didn’t fail his INT check!

I think Groder will probably quite willing when Phaere orders him to please her. :D

“So who are these foreigners that have professed such skill, especially you male? What is your name?” Phaere said raking her eyes over Haer`Dalis.

Bah… Haer? Groder will be even more pissed now. :)

And what do you think? :)

“It is kind of neat.” Imoen agreed. “But I know one Drow I wouldn`t mind being overwhelmed by.” She winked mischivouslly at Nalia. The young noble smiled slightly. “Solaufein is gorgeous.” Imoen then added.

*threatens to throw up* :)

“Changes hmm…?” The Drow mused and placed a hand on Groders head as he came up beside her.

“Changes, big sis.” The youth responded.

…oh?? Ah… he refers to their assumed relationship. :D

Viconia halted a moment, surprised. She looked at the young human. He looked somehow even younger now, in this Drow disguise. Viconia wondered if Jaheria was right, that he was far too young and that she should leave him be. She patted his head as she decided that she would think about it.

It certainly merits some thinking about. ;)

It's a fair, fair system, ain't it?

Gotta love Immy. She'll cheer Sola up, nice and proper.

I love it when authors think things out - I never do that  - so I loved this paragraph :D

“The rest are in the employ of House Hun´ett.” Viconia filled in.

I'm sorry. I didn't quite catch that. Which house? :)

“We were ambushed handmaiden.” Viconia said. “The one who lead us was a fool and fell swiftly to the vile worshipers of Ghaunadaur.”

The benifits of planning. Ah, I'll have to take notes.

“Illithid?” Groder piped up

Hello Mr Intelligent! I always play stupid characters - it make me laugh to say otyough (however you spell that, at least).

I'm jealous. I wish I could write such smooth and flowing fight scenes. Argh!

“What are those?” Nalia asked after the man had scurried off.

You manage to grasp magecraft and yet you can't figure that out!

“Oh you…” Nalia said and hit Imoen with a pillow.

If ever I threw a pillow at a BG character, it'd be Immy. In a loving way of course. She rocks the BG box!

Ust Natha was beautiful and terrible like all Drow cities. It was not her native Menzoberassan though and there had been times when she ached for that place. Aww! I feel sorry for poor, confused and conflicted Viccy. Do I dare offer a hug, or would that endanger my body parts?

Elves and their age dilemmas - classic source of distress.

Lovely long chapter. More please!

She will be trying to intorduce them to that but it is a case of makiung surte that thier cover isn`t blown.

As I said, it was more keeping Imoen in check then anything else.

Ah. No. I get it! Viccy is not opposed to the idea of the female learning the drow superiority in general... but she wants Sola for herself! AHA!

;)

Sola is not even a blip on her radar yet, might change you know. :)

Here we are nothing before we have proven ourselves. Remember, subservience to those above your rank, no mercy to those below and absolute obedience to the servants of Lolth.”
For once it is reassuring to have Viconia along. :)
Yep, If it is something she knows it is Drow! :D

“Steel yourselves and remember your roles. Let me and Jaheira do most of the talking and stay close at all times.” The Drow continued.
Interesting how she entrusts Jaheira enough as well. ;)
She has confidence that Jaheira at least won`t do anything silly.

“The grandest of human palaces pales before it.” Viconia said. Her eyes had taken on a different, softer light then usual.
It’s like the dark version of Suldanessellar. Elves are still elves even if they are dark.
Yep but the Drow don´t have that stick up thier arses. ;)

As the platform narrowed and turned to a broad walkway, the crowds thinned but it was still busy. Large spiders ambled along seemingly having no purpose; slaves from a multitude of races were driven on by their masters.
Those spiders always remind me of cows in India. :D
Heh... Oh yes, you can just imagine a spider settling down on a busy walkway and people can get past until it moves.

“Finally walking around in gloomy caverns paid off.” Imoen whispered and smiled slightly. “Erotic adventures here I come.”
Ugh. Methinks maybe your Imoen would be a good match with Haer. :)
Imoen: Hey I am not THAT pery! Besides, I think I deserve some hot man action after Irenicus stinky dungeons and spellhold.

He is correct, Haer does belong in a brothel. :D
I dare say that he would like it!

“That is why we are here, male.” Viconia emphasized the last word. “I am Viconia Hun`ett, first daughter of the house Hun´ett.”
Goodie, at least they can now retain their names for our convenience. :D
Well, except Groder for some reason... (blame da author!)

They followed Solaufein back towards the market and the entrance to the city. During their walk Imoen watched Solaufein and this was not lost on the Drow warrior. When he glanced in her direction, she winked at him.
*sighs at Imoen* :P
He he... She is a cutie!

“Only six!” The handmaiden Imrae yelled. “Do your matrons mock us? Did they not believe that we strike against the surface scum!?” The Drow woman was so angry that veins bulged in her neck.
It does seem pretty insulting, doesn’t it? ;)
Indeed. Six people if you party is full just seems well... little.

“Very well, you will go with Solaufein to rescue the first daughter of House Despana. She has been taken by the devourers and is being taken to their city. Failure is not an option and the Matron Mother expect even more from you Solaufein.”
Ah, the charming Phaere, here we come. :)
Oh yes!

“Over there begins the devourers tunnels. You know what I speak of yes?” He said.

“Illithid?” Groder piped up.
Oh wow, he didn’t fail his INT check!
Heh, he has to have something going for him.

I think Groder will probably quite willing when Phaere orders him to please her. ;)
Unfortunatly for him, she won`t even notice him!

“So who are these foreigners that have professed such skill, especially you male? What is your name?” Phaere said raking her eyes over Haer`Dalis.
Bah… Haer? Groder will be even more pissed now. :P
Well, Groder is just a kid and there are plenty of Drow in the Underdark. ;)

And what do you think? :)
:D

“It is kind of neat.” Imoen agreed. “But I know one Drow I wouldn`t mind being overwhelmed by.” She winked mischivouslly at Nalia. The young noble smiled slightly. “Solaufein is gorgeous.” Imoen then added.
*threatens to throw up* :P
He he... I shall see if she can be less sappy. ;)

“Changes hmm…?” The Drow mused and placed a hand on Groders head as he came up beside her.
“Changes, big sis.” The youth responded.
…oh?? Ah… he refers to their assumed relationship. :P
Among things yes...

Indeed. Seems like a good time for another heart to heart with Jaheira. ;)

It's a fair, fair system, ain't it?

Isn`t it? It is amazing it hasn`t collapsed on itself.

I'm not sure if it's beautiful or creepy, but it certainly is fascinating.

True, I tend to enjoy descriptions of Drow cities.

A warm welcome. Of course, we expect no less from Drow...

Yep, Mistrust is the word of the day there.

“Finally walking around in gloomy caverns paid off.” Imoen whispered and smiled slightly. “Erotic adventures here I come.”

Gotta love Immy. She'll cheer Sola up, nice and proper.

We shall see, Sola needs some cheering up. :)

I love it when authors think things out - I never do that  - so I loved this paragraph :D

Thank you.

“The rest are in the employ of House Hun´ett.” Viconia filled in.

I'm sorry. I didn't quite catch that. Which house? :)

Eh... Hun`ett, it is a canon house... unless it was destroyed and I missed it heh...

“We were ambushed handmaiden.” Viconia said. “The one who lead us was a fool and fell swiftly to the vile worshipers of Ghaunadaur.”

The benifits of planning. Ah, I'll have to take notes.

:D

“Illithid?” Groder piped up

Hello Mr Intelligent! I always play stupid characters - it make me laugh to say otyough (however you spell that, at least).

It is a wonder the PC just doesn`t get killed for that. INT is such a dump stat. ;)

I'm jealous. I wish I could write such smooth and flowing fight scenes. Argh!

Thank you, I tend to think that my fight scenes are as smooth as crude oil though.

“What are those?” Nalia asked after the man had scurried off.

You manage to grasp magecraft and yet you can't figure that out!

Aw, she has lived a somewhat sheltered life.

“Oh you…” Nalia said and hit Imoen with a pillow.

If ever I threw a pillow at a BG character, it'd be Immy. In a loving way of course. She rocks the BG box!

Heh... She is cute, our Imoen.

Aww! I feel sorry for poor, confused and conflicted Viccy. Do I dare offer a hug, or would that endanger my body parts?

Well, if you are quick and then run very fast I dare say it will be alright. ;)

Viconia halted a moment, surprised. She looked at the young human. He looked somehow even younger now, in this Drow disguise. Viconia wondered if Jaheria was right, that he was far too young and that she should leave him be. She patted his head as she decided that she would think about it.

Elves and their age dilemmas - classic source of distress.

Yep. This is more about his young age then the actual age distance.

Lovely long chapter. More please!

Coming up. Delivered by Llothco from the demonweb pits to your door.

“Halt!” One of them cried. “Who are you and what is your business here? Ust Natha is at war with the darthiir and the city is locked down.”

“Silence worm!” Viconia barked back. “We are reinforcements from Ched Nasad. We are expected.”

So, is Viconia happy to be back?

The guards parted and let the party through, giving them all suspicious looks. As they left the corridor of stone and wrought wall that made up the entrance to Ust Natha they came upon an expansive platform.

I don't blame him!

Hrmm, maybe Jaheira should have had a fake name, too?

“Veldrin is very unruly and it seems even flaying the skin of his back taught him nothing so our matron sent him with us to either learn his place or die.” Viconia said. “If you doubt us, we shall prove ourselves.”

:D

“So who are these foreigners that have professed such skill, especially you male? What is your name?” Phaere said raking her eyes over Haer`Dalis.

“They are from Ched Nasad and this is…” Solaufein began but Phaere interrupted him.

“I am sure they can speak for themselves Solaufein even if you cannot.” She said with venom in her voice.

Zing!

“Haer`Dalis of Ched Nasad.” Haer`Dalis smiled slightly and bowed before Phaere.

Again, I think it probably would have been better if you'd given the rest drow names, especially because Groder did get one.

Other than the names, I loved the chapter :)

Not as much as she would have wanted I think.

It is home or at least it still feels like it.

*bows*

Not really no, I would have my dubts too.

Maybe... I am so lazy...

“Veldrin is very unruly and it seems even flaying the skin of his back taught him nothing so our matron sent him with us to either learn his place or die.” Viconia said. “If you doubt us, we shall prove ourselves.”

It is almost true too!

Well, I am back from my trip and here is a longer chapter of Beloved Child. Where the party gets to meet new people and see new things! Drow people and things!

Hope ya had a good time!

The approach to Ust Natha`s gates went through a corridor of high walls and rock face. It was a prefect place for an ambush and Groder wondered just how many snipers were lying out there.

Knowing the Drow... a lot.

“Steel yourselves and remember your roles. Let me and Jaheira do most of the talking and stay close at all times.” The Drow continued.

Aww, they're workin' together.

In the distance, almost in the centre of the city rose if it had it been viewed from above a building shaped like a spider. The stalagmites and stalactites where exquisitely carved out with windows, balconies and walkways.

I always thought Ust Natha was quite lovely, in a dark sort of way.

“The grandest of human palaces pales before it.” Viconia said. Her eyes had taken on a different, softer light then usual.

Aww.

“Finally walking around in gloomy caverns paid off.” Imoen whispered and smiled slightly. “Erotic adventures here I come.”

Solaufein wondered if Ched Nasad had sent its undesirables to support them.

I like how we got to see into Sola's thoughts a little, and see the party from his perspective.

“That is why we are here, male.” Viconia emphasized the last word. “I am Viconia Hun`ett, first daughter of the house Hun´ett.”

Hopefully Viconia is a commn name amongst the Drow...

“Jaheira Hun´ett, second daughter of the house Hun`ett.” Jaheira said. Then she waved lazily at Groder. “This is Veldrin, third boy of house Hun´ett.”

So the others don't get Drow names? I always like seeing what people come up with.

They followed Solaufein back towards the market and the entrance to the city. During their walk Imoen watched Solaufein and this was not lost on the Drow warrior. When he glanced in her direction, she winked at him.

:D Immy doesn't waste time.

When the handmaiden left, Viconia sneered openly at the woman’s retreating back.

Yeah, Viccy's better than you! So nyah!

“Illithid?” Groder piped up.

Whoa, Groder passed an INT check!

“Yes, that is what they call themselves, smarter then you look then…” The drow warrior muttered and before Groder could answer back, Jaheira swatted him lightly on the back of the head to make the youth be quiet.

:D

“So who are these foreigners that have professed such skill, especially you male? What is your name?” Phaere said raking her eyes over Haer`Dalis.

:P I confess I saw that one coming. I'd say Haerry and Phaere are quite the match...

Good fight scene, too!

“They always decide to run off into potentially dangerous situations?” Groder asked.

“Only the short lived ones.” Viconia smiled

Good point, Viccy.

“What are those?” Nalia asked after the man had scurried off.

Gee. I wonder.

Nalia blushed.

Poor little sheltered Nalia. :)

“It is kind of neat.” Imoen agreed. “But I know one Drow I wouldn`t mind being overwhelmed by.” She winked mischivouslly at Nalia. The young noble smiled slightly. “Solaufein is gorgeous.” Imoen then added.

Just keep in mind, Immy, that even if he's an Eilistraee worshipper he's still a Drow and they've got some strange ideas.

“Oh you…” Nalia said and hit Imoen with a pillow.

D'aww. :)

Viconia halted a moment, surprised. She looked at the young human. He looked somehow even younger now, in this Drow disguise. Viconia wondered if Jaheria was right, that he was far too young and that she should leave him be. She patted his head as she decided that she would think about it.

Good first step, Viccy. Then you can find someone with... er... a little more experience. :)

Good chapter! I always really like it when stories reach the Drow bit.

The approach to Ust Natha`s gates went through a corridor of high walls and rock face. It was a prefect place for an ambush and Groder wondered just how many snipers were lying out there.

Knowing the Drow... a lot.

Most likely yes. :)

“Steel yourselves and remember your roles. Let me and Jaheira do most of the talking and stay close at all times.” The Drow continued.

Aww, they're workin' together.

Yep! A lot of bridges havce been built.

Thank you. I still feel I have some problems jumping from character to character in the middle of a section.

“That is why we are here, male.” Viconia emphasized the last word. “I am Viconia Hun`ett, first daughter of the house Hun´ett.”

Hopefully Viconia is a commn name amongst the Drow...

Viconia: What Viconia Devir? I have never heard of her... ho ho ho...

“Jaheira Hun´ett, second daughter of the house Hun`ett.” Jaheira said. Then she waved lazily at Groder. “This is Veldrin, third boy of house Hun´ett.”

So the others don't get Drow names? I always like seeing what people come up with.

I kinda of pigged out on lazy here...

They followed Solaufein back towards the market and the entrance to the city. During their walk Imoen watched Solaufein and this was not lost on the Drow warrior. When he glanced in her direction, she winked at him.

Nope and she doesnt even know that he is single!

When the handmaiden left, Viconia sneered openly at the woman’s retreating back.

Since she probably got captured while trying to get some blood for the ritual Viccy has a very good point.

I may have made her too sheltered, she did hang around the slums...

House Hun'ett? Correct me if I'm wrong, but I remember that there was a House Hun'ett in Menzoberranzan, and that they were destroyed by House Do'Urden, who were in their own turn destroyed by the mighty House Baenre. Is this another branch of the same House, by any chance?

I suppose it must be nice for Viconia to finally be home again, so to speak. Cruel, hard, and pitiless as the drow culture is, it is still beautiful and also home for Viconia; I'm sure that offers her some comfort. I remember that for the drow, interaction is all based upon submission and dominance. It is interesting to see that dynamic at work. Despite the very real daily risk of dying, I imagine it must be quite exhilarating to play the games of power as the drow do, the thrill that comes from destroying your enemies and gaining greater power and station through it.

By the way, what is your guess of House Despana's rank? Given their importance and apparent position of leadership in the war against the darthir, I'm thinking that House Despana is very close to the first, since it was hinted that they wanted to climb higher, to become First House of Ust Natha just as House Baenre is First House of Menzoberranzan.

Hmm... That may very well be. The list I took the name from however did not list it as defunct or destroyed. So we shall assume that it simply is a branch of the house.

I imagine that Drow life is very trying atleast for the nobles and those trying to get a foot in there.

As for Viconia, it was her home but I do wonder if it can ever be again as does she. She may find that she is more at home with her companions then in the Underdark.

For the intents and purposes of this story, Despana is the first house of Ust Natha.
