When you write, do you write listening to music or in silence? And if to music, to what kind of music?

I'm asking, because I found that listening to mood-setting music helps me a lot. The majority of Siblings: Horses' Move, which takes part among the druids, was written to Enya, Clannad and Simon & Garfunkel's 'Scarborough Fair'. A scene where Imoen considers how she'll kill Sarevok, and then breaks into his house, was written to 'Goldeneye'. :D

And the Gladiator Waltz from 'Gladiator' is great for writing fight scenes.

So, I'm curious if/what kind of music you're listening to as you write?

It doesn't often seem that I find the right kind of music to fit a mood while writing, but if I do I tend to use it. I even do that while reading, actually, and more often too. Sometimes I like to listen to the music of a part in the BG series that I'm trying to write about; I might also use game music at other times in reading or writing something completely unrelated. The most common situation is when reading or writing an action scene - some music like that is probably going to play in my head anyway, so I might as well listen to it. Another situation, whic I've really only been encountering in reading, is with some epic end scene, something really significant happening after a long story, or something really sad or such (examples here would be spoilers). The Fortress of Regrets in Planescape: Torment has great music for this kind of thing for itself, and I've even had it work at the background of some other stories.

Heh heh, I always end up singing along to the music, and not concentrating on what I'm writing if I listen to music, so it's a no-go from me.

I don't own any music without lyrics, but I think I'd still be humming along too much to be focusing on my writing. Sometimes, however, I'll listen to a song, and think, "Gosh! That's inpired me to write in a certain way a certain part of my story!"

I agree with Clight that sometimes I'll listen to some of the music from the BG games, but I know them so well that I end up humming along. Man, I'm easily disracted...

I sometime listen to music, sometimes no. I don't really have a specific, just set the music to go while I write (usually actually just let it continue to run when I start writing). Occasionally set a specific thing on to write, but it's a very rare occurrence.

I actually write best when I'm listening to music. It doesn't really matter what - music is music really - although I do have a personal preference for anything by Queen.

I also have 'theme songs' for particular characters, pairings and scenes. If I get stuck, listening to certain songs often helps in unblocking my mind.

And of course it goes without saying that I'm always picking up new ideas from songs. :(

Bhaal has a few songs that make me think of him.

Try this out.

1: When You're Evil:

2: The Man Upstairs:

3: Almost Human

I can't get a link to this other one, but Drowning Pool did a song called Bodies that is particularly how I think of him when he's on a roll.
