The second horrible chapter is here and now it is only a half chapter left. It is slayer time and Imoen also discovers a new power.

Beloved Child 47

The lower level of the maze was cold; the magical fires that floated in the ceiling provided only illumination not warmth.

“Gee, I would not mind a pair of pants right now.” Imoen said as she carefully checked one of the two doors in the room they had descended into from the first level.

“You could borrow mine.” Haer`Dalis winked.

“Nah, I think I will pass.” Imoen chuckled. “Well, these doors are not trapped and stop trying to look up my skirt.” She stuck her tongue out at the bard.

“I doth protest.” The bard held up his hands in an innocent gesture. “I have done no such thing.”

“Heh… Honestly you are kind of refreshing after all the gloom.” The young mage responded.

“Sometimes comedy is needed even if it is not my particular poison.” The tiefling said and motioned for the rest of the party to join them.

The door revealed a corridor that ran to a circular room which held an odd device. It was shaped like a dome with an open space at the bottom and on it next to a plaque was a small slot.

“A totally useless room, I am surprised.” Groder spat.

“Not entirely.” Nalia said quietly. The redhead drew a finger over the plaque. “This says:
Find and feed the tokens for freedom and furnishings? Below it says: Key 10 tokens, Surprise 15 tokens.”

“I guess we need tokens then?” Imoen tapped at the machine. “Wanna bet we have to search this entire floor for it?”

At the door to the room Viconia approached Jaheira.

“You seem a bit pensive.” The Drow said and searched the druids face.

Jaheira sighed.

“Bah… I just let Groder get to me that is all.” She responded.

“You should teach him how lowly males should behave around females.” Viconia smacked the air with an open palm.

Jaheira raised an eyebrow.

“You do realize that I have no idea if you are joking or not.” The half-elf said dryly.

**

Leaving the room with the device behind, the party went down the second door and corridor. They emerged into a room that on the right opened up on a rounded alcove and a passage opposite the one they had come from led further into the maze. The room was dominated by a statue of an axe wielding ogre. An urn had been turned over on the floor and several small shiny discs had spilled from it. Nalia picked up one of the discs.

“They look like coins but they are metal.” The young noble said.

“So they are useless?” Viconia asked and took one.

“They might be the tokens we need for the machine but there are only four here.” Nalia shrugged.

Meanwhile Groder approached the alcove. Three statues stood in it, each of them holding a single metal disc in their hands.

“I think I have found more of them.” He yelled and was about to step into the circular space when Imoen grabbed his shoulder.

“What?” He asked annoyed.

“You think they are just going to sit there?” She asked. “Look at where you were about to plant your foot.”

A thin almost invisible string ran from one wall to the other. Groder let out a deep breath.

“Good catch.” The blonde said.

“You are just lucky I like you.” Imoen teased. “There are more in there. You have to look for them to see them. What was this place supposed to do to the inmates going through it anyways? It is just stupid and dangerous.”

“Can you take care of them?” Groder asked and stepped back.

“I am fresh out of tools.” The young woman responded.

Groder looked expectantly at Nalia but the girl shook her head.

“My tools were in my pack and it is still upstairs somewhere.” She said and then her face fell, remembering who had bought the tools for her in the first place.

“It would have been great if you could just reach out and take them.” Imoen mused and smiled as she stretched out a hand towards one of the statues.

As the girl did so the arm stretched out like rubber, the hand heading towards the statue.

“What the hells?” Imoen cried as she watched her stretched rubbery arm wobble in the air.

“What did you do child?” Jaheira asked naked surprise on her face.

“I don’t know!” Imoen cried. “I just thought it would be neat to be able to reach the tokens across the space.”

The party had gathered around the frantic Imoen whose elongated arm wobbled slightly as the girl fought to keep it steady.

“Try to grab the coins.” Groder urged.

“Be silent, Groder” Jaheira said. “Child, concentrate on making the arm normal again.”

“Uh, sure.” Imoen said and stared at the arm. The mage concentrated on the arm and after a while it began to shrink back to its normal state.

“That was kind of creepy.” Imoen said after waving her arm around a bit. “I didn’t know I could do stuff like that.”

“I wonder.” Groder mused and stretched out his arm like Imoen had. Nothing happened. The boy shook his head. “Might have something to do with the Bhaal blood.”

“What? I get my soul sucked out of me and gain the ability to do freaky things with my arms?” Imoen said. Then she looked at the statues again and extended her arm towards them. Concentrating, the same thing happened again. The arm extended and Imoen grabbed the token. Then she pulled the arm back and it shrunk again.

Looking at the metal disc she said:

“I guess it’s useful if I want to get stuff from shelves that are high up.” The mage commented.

“Perhaps you should be careful, child.” Jaheira commented. “If it has something to do with what was done to you, we do not know what could happen later.”

Imoen nodded.

“I know. I don’t think limited use would be dangerous though.”

The mage handed the disc to Nalia. Then Imoen raised both arms and extended them across the space, gathering up the two other discs.

“So why can you do things like that and I can’t?” Groder complained as they walked down the next corridor that turned sharply north after a while.

“Maybe because I am cute and spunky.” Imoen grinned at him.

“But our Raven is cute.” Haer`Dalis said and placed a hand on Groder´s head.

Groder waved at Haer`Dalises hand as Imoen laughed.

They passed through another empty room and another empty corridor before they came to a room which held three doors. Groder tried the northernmost door and found it locked. A lone keyhole rested under one of the handles.

“I think we have found the exit.” The boy said. “But we only have seven tokens. How utterly predictable.”

“Oh, but you don’t have to worry about the silly games they wanted you to play anymore.” A voice purred behind them.

Bodhi stood where the corridor began, hands on hips and a triumphant smirk on her lips.
Vampires fanned out behind her and the undead now covered the party’s only escape route.

“I got bored and now it ends little mice.” The vampire queen said.

The party drew their weapons, Nalia and Imoen stood behind the others.

“I seem to recall that we did not fare very well the last time we met her.” Haer`Dalis whispered.

Groder felt sweat enveloping him despite the cold that pervaded the maze. They had not fared well during their first battle with Bodhi and now they were worse off because she was not alone this time. He did not want to die, not here, not like this.

“I am going to make you beg and cry for embarrassing me.” Bodhi purred maliciously.

Groder gripped the axe tighter; he did not want to die here. He could not die here. Icy tendrils of fear began shooting through him. His vision began blurring.

“Aw, is the mousey going to cry.” Bodhi taunted.

“THE VOID IS GREAT. THE VOID IS DAMNATION FOR YOU BUT IT HOLDS POWER! SO MUCH POWER!”
Bhaal´s voice yelled in Groder`s mind.

Azure Edge clattered on the floor. Groder`s bones and limbs began expanding, twisting before his mind receded into plesant darkness.

**

They all watched, mortal and undead alike as the short boy’s body expanded. Flesh and clothes and armour turned into pitch black scales. Blades and hooks of metal began shooting out all over the changing body. The head with its long hair and girlish face was absorbed by the changing neck and became a long circular worm like thing. There were no visible eyes, only the wormlike neck and a mouth with a thousand churning teeth. Fingers and toes turned into long claws of steel. When the transformation was complete, the thing threw back its head and howled.

Two of Bodhi´s vampires jumped forward and it looked as if they disappeared in a cloud of blood when the thing swiped a long arm at them.

“What have you become child of Bhaal? A creature of pure death.” Bodhi stammered. “Away! Jon must know about this.”

The vampire queen took flight and a cloud of bats rapidly disappeared. The remaining vampires followed their queen’s example and fled. The thing turned towards the party.

“That is the slayer! Run!” Imoen yelled.

**

When Groder awoke, he found himself lying on the floor. His entire body hurt and he felt tired like never before. There were flashes, Bodhi fleeing, vampires being reduced to nothing, more fleeing. Viconia´s face appeared in his field of vision.

“It seems you are yourself again abbil.” The Drow said pearls of sweat ran down her delicate face. “It would be good if you gave us some sort of warning before you turned into a creature of such darkness.”

“Indeed, I do not remember the last time I ran like that.” Jaheira appeared next to Viconia. Just like the Drow she was drenched in sweat.

“Could you help me up instead of passing judgement?” Groder asked.

The two women pulled him up. The boy wobbled a bit but steadied himself.

“So what was that?” Jaheira asked.

“The Slayer.” Imoen`s voice said out of thin air. The air blurred and Imoen and Nalia became viable.

“Thank Mystra for invisibility and Bhaal for stupid avatars eh?” She chirped and wrapped an arm around Nalia´s shoulders. The redhead smiled and did the same to Imoen.

“So that was the Slayer?” Groder asked and rubbed his head.

“Yep, avatar of Bhaal.” Imoen nodded. “Since that did not happen to me I guess that we react differently to what Irenicus did to us.”

“If it affects you in these ways, we need to hurry and reverse it.” Jaheira said.

“Fascinating but I really need to sit down a while.” Groder yawned.

“Hey! Where is Haer`Dalis?” Imoen asked and looked around.

“Right here and readier then a red cheeked maiden my friends!” Haer`Dalis called and slipped into the room from one of the adjacent ones. “That was some marvellous transformation My Raven.” The bard dug around in a pocket. “Also I found some more of those tokens.” He held a few discs up. “I think we have enough for the key.”

“Splendid…” Groder said and yawned again. “At least we can get out of here.”

**

They returned to the room with the machine unmolested. After feeding ten tokens into the slot, the machine began humming and shaking. After having done this for a minute, a thing fell down into the opening at the machine’s base.

“That is not a key.” Nalia said as Viconia pulled out a chain mail that was coloured like the rainbow.

As Viconia held it up, an object fell from it and hit the floor. A silver key lay on the floor.

“I guess it is broken then.” The redheaded mage said after picking up the key.

“Too bad it is chain otherwise I could have used it.” Imoen looked at the armour.

“Why can’t you?” Groder asked and looked at the chain mail with distaste.

“Magic requires some precise movements and armour even light ones can foul that up.” Imoen explained. “You could use it though.”

“Why?” The boy glanced at the armour. “It’s garish.”

“There is a hole in the one you wear now.” Jaheira pointed out. “Really, whining about how your protection looks...”

“So if we found…” Groder waved a hand. “Pink armour you would wear that?”

“Yes.” The expression on the half-elf´s face never changed from dead serious.

Groder donned the multicoloured chain mail under much protest.

**

When they returned to the room which held the locked exit, they agreed to get some rest, after some argument that Groder was not randomly going to turn into the Slayer. They huddled against each other, keeping the cold away. Groder ended up next to Viconia. He had always found the Drow alluring but this proximity to her was unusual. He felt safe and warmer for some reason, just safe and warm. The youth leaned closer to the Drow, resting his head on her shoulder and drifted off into sleep.

**

Groder woke to frantic screaming; he could actually feel his body changing this time, twisting itself into the murderous tool that was the Slayer.

“The warp… it changes me… It is a good pain…” The boy ground out.

Heh, she had Khalid quite well trained that way. :D

Clearly this is why Groder would have never made it as a rogue.

As the girl did so the arm stretched out like rubber, the hand heading towards the statue.

Snake-Imoen?

“That was kind of creepy.” Imoen said after waving her arm around a bit. “I didn’t know I could do stuff like that.”

Sounds cool when you want to steal muffins without Jaheira catching you.

“So why can you do things like that and I can’t?” Groder complained as they walked down the next corridor that turned sharply north after a while.

Well, you may turn into a lobster, later.

“I seem to recall that we did not fare very well the last time we met her.” Haer`Dalis whispered.

Yes, maybe try and learn Mass Invisibility, so you don’t have to stand invisible and watch your less happy party members getting slaughtered.

“Sometimes comedy is needed even if it is not my particular poison.” The tiefling said and motioned for the rest of the party to join them.

Haer'Dalis! :)
Methinks 'twas a great dialogue, that was. :)

Find and feed the tokens for freedom and furnishings? Below it says: Key 10 tokens, Surprise 15 tokens.”

“I guess we need tokens then?” Imoen tapped at the machine. “Wanna bet we have to search this entire floor for it?”

Ah. Experienced Adventuress. But no boots of speed?

“You do realize that I have no idea if you are joking or not.” The half-elf said dryly.

Now, that's a great line. Because it's so true. :)

“You think they are just going to sit there?” She asked. “Look at where you were about to plant your foot.”

A thin almost invisible string ran from one wall to the other. Groder let out a deep breath.

“Good catch.” The blonde said.

“You are just lucky I like you.” Imoen teased.

Oh. So they do like each other! And Imoen showcases her stuff again...

As the girl did so the arm stretched out like rubber, the hand heading towards the statue.

“What the hells?” Imoen cried as she watched her stretched rubbery arm wobble in the air.

:D I'm really, really genuinely shocked. I'll be waiting to see what you'll do with it!

Azure Edge clattered on the floor. Groder`s bones and limbs began expanding, twisting before his mind receded into plesant darkness.

A great description.

They all watched, mortal and undead alike as the short boy’s body expanded. Flesh and clothes and armour turned into pitch black scales. This one is even better... and I finally get to understand the purpose of all those HP Lovecraft references earlier. :)

:) Haer'Dalis! :)
He's just so... crazy.

“That is not a key.” Nalia said as Viconia pulled out a chain mail that was coloured like the rainbow.

Ehh. Given how in Planescape:Torment, a key could be the memory of first kiss, or - well, absolutely everything, really, I wouldn't be so quick to judge...

As Viconia held it up, an object fell from it and hit the floor. A silver key lay on the floor.

Oh. She was right. My bad. ;)

“Why?” The boy glanced at the armour. “It’s garish.”

That's why!

“So if we found…” Groder waved a hand. “Pink armour you would wear that?”

Ah. That'd be the Pride of the Legion, aye? But that was on the previous level...

Groder woke to frantic screaming; he could actually feel his body changing this time, twisting itself into the murderous tool that was the Slayer.

“The warp… it changes me… It is a good pain…” The boy ground out.

'It is a good pain?' You just won't stop the Lovecraft motive, will you? :)

For a chapter you say was horrible, it was great! :)

“Sometimes comedy is needed even if it is not my particular poison.” The tiefling said and motioned for the rest of the party to join them.

Haer'Dalis! :)
Methinks 'twas a great dialogue, that was. :)

Heh... Thank you.

Nope... no boots I am afraid.

“You do realize that I have no idea if you are joking or not.” The half-elf said dryly.

Now, that's a great line. Because it's so true. :)

:(

“You think they are just going to sit there?” She asked. “Look at where you were about to plant your foot.”

A thin almost invisible string ran from one wall to the other. Groder let out a deep breath.

“Good catch.” The blonde said.

“You are just lucky I like you.” Imoen teased.

Oh. So they do like each other! And Imoen showcases her stuff again...

Well, as I said, they have an odd sort of relationship.

As the girl did so the arm stretched out like rubber, the hand heading towards the statue.

“What the hells?” Imoen cried as she watched her stretched rubbery arm wobble in the air.

:D I'm really, really genuinely shocked. I'll be waiting to see what you'll do with it!

Thanksm, first I have to remember that she had it. :)

Azure Edge clattered on the floor. Groder`s bones and limbs began expanding, twisting before his mind receded into plesant darkness.

A great description.

Thankee.

This one is even better... and I finally get to understand the purpose of all those HP Lovecraft references earlier. :(

Actually they were just random references...

:) Haer'Dalis! 8)
He's just so... crazy.

He is fun to write.

“That is not a key.” Nalia said as Viconia pulled out a chain mail that was coloured like the rainbow.

Ehh. Given how in Planescape:Torment, a key could be the memory of first kiss, or - well, absolutely everything, really, I wouldn't be so quick to judge...

Well, they are not in Sigil and the machine is just broken. :)

As Viconia held it up, an object fell from it and hit the floor. A silver key lay on the floor.

Oh. She was right. My bad. ;)

:)

“Why?” The boy glanced at the armour. “It’s garish.”

That's why!

:)

“So if we found…” Groder waved a hand. “Pink armour you would wear that?”

Ah. That'd be the Pride of the Legion, aye? But that was on the previous level...

Yep. It never got to make an apperance.

Groder woke to frantic screaming; he could actually feel his body changing this time, twisting itself into the murderous tool that was the Slayer.

“The warp… it changes me… It is a good pain…” The boy ground out.

It is a good pain?' You just won't stop the Lovecraft motive, will you? :)

It is kind of Lovecraftian but the line is from Relics RTS: Dawn of War. The Chaos Marines say that line sometimes when you select them. I just love that line.

For a chapter you say was horrible, it was great! :(

Seems I will have to change my opion of it! :?

I suspect you will soon find a pink armor, then.

Nah... They already missed that since I didn`t include the mirror room on the first level.

IIRC you had Jaheira don that armour in Rush.

Oh yes. :D It got replaced with a lovely Firkraag chain mail that still serves her well up to this day.

Just wanted to comment and say that I've been reading for a while and I'm quite intrigued by your party composition. Groder's definitely unlike any Bhaalspawn I've seen so far... and Haer'Dalis is as fascinating as ever.

Oh, adn interesting new power for Imoen, there... shall we start calling her Luffy? :D

Thankee. If you don`t mind please elaborate why you think Groder is diffrent. I like to hear stuff about me chars. :D

Heh. Well, he's young for one thing... and quite a lot more callous, for another. I think he works best when paired with all the rest of them, though, which is why I mention the entire party.

Luffy?

In the anime (and manga, I guess) One Piece, there's a pirate called Luffy who eats a magic fruit and gets the ability to stretch himself like rubber. Maybe I should just call it Immy's Grasping Hand, then? :)

Ok, thanks. I originally planned to include a little request for feedback on Groder with this chapter.

Oooh, goodies!

At the door to the room Viconia approached Jaheira.

“You seem a bit pensive.” The Drow said and searched the druids face.

Viccy? showing concern? is she ill? :)

She's serious! do it! do it!

Why? Why did she have to warn him? :)

“It would have been great if you could just reach out and take them.” Imoen mused and smiled as she stretched out a hand towards one of the statues.

As the girl did so the arm stretched out like rubber, the hand heading towards the statue.

:D

“What the hells?” Imoen cried as she watched her stretched rubbery arm wobble in the air.

“What did you do child?” Jaheira asked naked surprise on her face.

“I don’t know!” Imoen cried. “I just thought it would be neat to be able to reach the tokens across the space.”

The party had gathered around the frantic Imoen whose elongated arm wobbled slightly as the girl fought to keep it steady.

“Try to grab the coins.” Groder urged.

There's at least one person who can keep his mind on the really important matters! :D

So, Mr Fantastic was a child of Bhaal too?:)

She likes dramatic entrances, doesn't she?

“THE VOID IS GREAT. THE VOID IS DAMNATION FOR YOU BUT IT HOLDS POWER! SO MUCH POWER!”
Bhaal´s voice yelled in Groder`s mind.

Azure Edge clattered on the floor. Groder`s bones and limbs began expanding, twisting before his mind receded into plesant darkness.

I can't help myself, I just love this moment, when the PC turns into the Slayer. ;)

Bhaal: Now, worms, you will kneel before my divine might! MWAHAHAHA!

“What have you become child of Bhaal? A creature of pure death.” Bodhi stammered. “Away! Jon must know about this.”

I'm so not buying that one...Just admit you're scared silly! :D

“So if we found…” Groder waved a hand. “Pink armour you would wear that?”

“Yes.” The expression on the half-elf´s face never changed from dead serious.

Groder donned the multicoloured chain mail under much protest.

I look forward for that one... :twisted

Aw, that's cute. Why can't be Groder cute more often?

Groder woke to frantic screaming; he could actually feel his body changing this time, twisting itself into the murderous tool that was the Slayer.

Poor, poor Viccy...

They are almost friends, so Viccy has dropped her guard a bit.

Jaheira sighed.

Actually, they already passed that one.
