Finally… Spellhold! Please enjoy!

And lay it on me. Are the chapters too long, too short?

Some notes:

All Hanshin-Kyojin is a contemporary Japanese comedy duo; it consists of a short guy and a tall guy. (Yes, I stole it from Lovely Complex… whatever….)

Beloved Child 44

“Is he high?” Groder asked and waved a hand at the wizard known as Perth the Adept. The young man sat in a chair in his home and stared straight ahead. The boy had taken a book from a shelf and dumped it in a basin filled with water and the man had still not even batted an eye. The house consisted of one room that held a sleeping area, one for cooking and eating and one corner crammed with books which most likely was the spot the wizard used for studies. Yoshimo pulled back one of the young adept’s eyelids and looked closely.

“I think it may be magical in nature, it is like he isn’t even here.” The Kara-Turan said and let go of the mage. The young mage’s head lolled a bit.

Moving the young mesmerized man directly into a beam of sunlight that entered through a window high on a wall did nothing either. By the study corner, Nalia pulled out a few scrolls and held them up.

“Do you think he will mind if I take a few?” She asked and then added. “I haven’t found anything about getting into Spellhold here.”

“If you do not require me, I shall be outside.” Viconia announced as Nalia went back to looking over Perth’s desk. “This place truly stinks of that human.” The Drow said and opened the front door.

“You will hear us if anything happens no doubt.” Groder said and started rifling through Perth`s nightstand as Viconia exited the building.

The ransacking of Perth’s home continued and the man remained as oblivious as he had been when the party had first entered his home. Haer`Dalis had given up and had sat down by the small table that severed as Perth`s place of dining. The bard helped himself to a jug of juice that had been standing alone of the table.

“I don’t think we will find anything.” Jaheira eventually sighed. “We may have to go to this Desharik after all.” The druid stretched. “I will tell Viconia that we may be about to leave.”
With that, the half-elf left the house as well.

“Well, there is only one place left to look.” Groder shrugged. “So do we kill him or can you pick his pockets, Yoshimo?

**

Outside the house, Viconia and Jaheira leaned against the sun kissed front wall. They watched the horizon where blue met endless blue.

“So.” The Drow began and glanced over at the half-elf. “What did the old sorcerer mean with his words?”

“You are asking me?” Jaheira said and turned her head towards the cleric. “I could ask you the same thing. What he pried at where private matters and to talk about it would require afterthought.” She paused and then added with mild surprise.” Do you really want to talk about it? Do you find me more trustworthy then Groder?”

Viconia rubbed a hand behind one of her long pointed ears. “I will tell Groder what I deem necessary for him to know and we will part ways soon, you and I”

A cry and a crash from inside the house disturbed their conversation. After it came the unmistakable chanting of mages. The Drow and the half-elf readied their weapons and ran into the house.

Inside the house Perth the adept stood in the middle of the one room, walls of magic shimmered around him.

“Testing the limitations of the subject.” The mage droned and began drawing patterns in the air while chanting a spell. Nalia had begun casting her own spells as had Haer`Dalis. The redheaded mage let loose a shimmering blue ball at Perth that razed one of the magical protections around him. A ball of swimming purple shot up around Haer`Dalis and the bard closed in on the young green robed mage.

Perth removed a scroll from his robes and quickly activated it. A pink shimmer enveloped the room and soon furniture began dancing about. A squirrel looked about confused where Yoshimo had stood and Jaheira had to stop abruptly as to not run into a wall as she had been hasted. Nalia sighed and began casting a spell of her own. A white ball divided and jumped between the party members and Perth, dispelling the effects of the chaos spell. It also knocked down one of Perth`s magic defences and Haer`Dalis took the chance. Hurling himself forward, the bard drove one of his short blades into the back of Perth`s neck. The mage fell dead to the floor.

While Nalia checked if Yoshimo was alright, Groder stepped around the corpse and began rifling through the dead mans robes. The rest of the party was busy shoving away dancing furniture that had not been affected by Nalia`s dispelling efforts. Groder managed to find a smooth black stone with an S emblazoned on it.

“Could this be anything?” He asked and tossed the stone to Nalia.

Nalia held up the stone and examined it.

“It is a ward stone of some sort. I would guess it will allow entry, most likely to Spellhold since it has an S carved into it.” The young mage reported.

“Makes sense.” Groder said.

**

The party met up with Sime on the rocky road that led towards Spellhold.

“You found a way in?” The thief asked when they came up to the palm tree she sat under. “That is good. I have not been able to find Havarian so I will try to get word to Aran somehow.”

The dark haired assassin waved them off and disappeared down the path that would lead back to the small town. A stone bridge led across the large ravine that split the majority of the island to the small part that housed Spellhold. The deep red building with its dark roofs made an even gloomier presence here then it had done in the small town.

“Do you feel any different?” Haer`Dalis asked as he walked up next to Groder

“About what?” The boy asked and slowed his pace, deliberately letting the rest of the group go on ahead on the bridge.

“You have lost a girl, My Raven.” The bard said as they walked behind the group.

“Look, she was fun… it’s not like I lost the love of my life or anything.” Groder shrugged. “It is not even something worth talking about.”

The bard nodded sagely.

“Love them and leave them eh? You will break many hearts, My Raven.” The tiefling grinned. “Remember that I have years of advise to lend you should you want them.”

“You know, you are a lot easier to talk to when you are not being weird.” Groder said and glanced at the bard.

“Ah, I see I have been lax in my attentions.” Haer`Dalis smiled.

**

The bridge led to a wide encircled courtyard that lay just before the entrance to Spellhold. A few stone benches sat at regular intervals and a few neat green patches where present. The red brick façade and the dark tinted windows of Spellhold seemed uninviting even in the warm sunlight. A large ornate door sat in the middle of façade, the door handle was formed like a devils head holding an iron ring in its mouth.

“Does anyone want to try the door?” Groder asked as they came up to it.

“Oh, for Silvanus sake.” Jaheira said and grabbed the ward stone from Nalia. Then the druid resolutely pulled the door open.

“Can I help you?” A voice asked suddenly. Jaheira jumped back and almost pummelled the robed man that appeared in the doorway.

The man was clad in the green robes of the Cowled Wizards. His face was hidden deep in the hood he wore. The man bowed.

“I am Killjoy, the alienist here.” He introduced himself.

Groder thought that there was something familiar with the man’s voice and at the same time not. It was clinical and cold yet distortedly exuberant. The man retreated back into the asylum motioning for them to follow. After a while the party followed slowly. The hall they came into was long and wide. The floor was tiled and the walls were painted white. A painting dominated the far wall. It was of a stern looking green robed man with a neat dark goatee and moustache. Hard brown eyes stared down at the room. Otherwise the hall was barren and only a door in the right wall and a corridor going in the same direction further down the hall could be seen. Killjoy had stopped in the middle of the room.

“Look, we are here for I…” Groder began but Killjoy interrupted him.

“Imoen, yes?” The man filled in. “We have heard. We are not as cut of from Athkatla as some would think. She is in the common room right now.”

“No.” Groder replied looking impatiently at Killjoy. “We are here for Irenicus.”

“Yes, yes. We keep him below with the other dangerous subjects. Follow me. We have to pass by the cells to get to the common room” The man said and ushered the party down a corridor and began what most likely was a rehearsed talk. “We house many here in this house for the magically deviant and mentally dispossessed. Many are a danger to themselves and others. Here in comfort and safety they can be examined and understood for the benefit of all.”

The hooded man came to a stop in front of a cell and swept his arm at the open door.

“Take Dili here for example.” Killjoy said.

A gaunt, blonde girl of about ten sat on a pillow on the floor. The cell was barren except for a bed and many colourful drawing that adorned the walls and floor. Dili as the girl was called looked up and smiled a haunted smile when she saw the party. The girl waved energetically at them.

“That is only a child!” Jaheira yelled at Killjoy. “What has she done to warrant her being in this place?”

“I wear many faces.” The girl sang. “Today I could be you.”

The girl changed, expanded and suddenly a perfect copy of Jaheira sat on the pillow. The Jaheira-copy stood and twirled around. Groder and Viconia snickered. Haer`Dalis smiled at Jaheira. The druid looked very displeased.

“Imitation is the highest form of flattery, oh hound.” The demonic actor said.

As the girl turned back into her ten-year old self Killjoy droned on.

“As you can see, in a safe and structured environment she can be studied and is also safe from harm.” The alienist said.

“Safe?” Jaheira balked. “She looks malnourished and being locked up in that cell can do her no good.”

The half-elf growled when she noticed she was talking to thin air. Killjoy had already moved to the next cell. Nalia looked in at the girl whom had resumed her drawing.

“Maybe she can come with us afterwards?” The young mage said.

Jaheira nodded and followed Killjoy and the rest of the party. The next cell looked like Dili`s expect that the papers strewn around where filled with text.

“This is Wanev, the former coordinator of this asylum.” Killjoy waved a hand at the green robed man in the cell. The man may once have been neat just like in the painting of him but now he looked dishevelled and was looking about the room wildly.

“He had a bad reaction to a spell. It is unfortunate but it does happen. We can now learn from his condition and prevent it from happening again.” Killjoy continued.

Wanev snapped his head towards the party that stood in the corridor outside the cell. He pointed imperiously at them.

“You, All Hanshin-Kyojin over there!” He bellowed and pointed. Viconia and Jaheira looked at each other and then at the man.

“Do you mean us?” Viconia said confused and cocked her head to the side, a neat white eyebrow raised. Jaheira looked mildly surprised as well.

“Do you know what causes insanity?” He asked but before they could answer he did it himself. ”Mutations!” Wanev began moving his hand about in the air by his head. “Horrid mutations in the general… brain… area…thing…” He trailed off and went back into his own world.

“Our next guest is Naljier Skal, a famous bard once. His final experiments was to look into the nature of the universe, whatever he found there did not like him looking.” Killjoy said as he walked in front of the party.

“Does he actually think we are interested in this?” Groder whispered. Haer`Dalis shrugged.

“The more I see the more I want to teach this… man a lesson.” Jaheira growled.

The elf that was Naljier Skal was scribbling on the walls of his cell that was already darkened with the same gibberish.

“Makes its home… in the centre of the universe, dumb, blind idiot god…” The man ground out and then began beating his head against the wall while crying out. “Azatoth, Azatoth!”

Killjoy flicked a hand at the former bard and the tormented man sunk to the floor, asleep.

They turned a corner and almost collided into a young woman. Her blonde hair was unruly and she was shaking, constantly looking around.

“Ah, this is Aphril.” Killjoy began as he stopped before the woman. “Her condition is interesting. She sees all the planes and the denizens of them, many of them are rather unpleasant as I understand.”

“Everywhere, above and below and around.” Aphril muttered and shrieked when Haer`Dalis got to close to her.

Nalia gripped Yoshimo tightly.

“This place is awful.” She said, her voice trembling.

“She does not sleep much, after all what use are eyelids when you can see through the planes?” Killjoy informed and moved on past an empty cell.

An elderly elf sat on a chair in the middle of the last cell the party and their guide passed. His head was shaved and there were several sewn up scars covering his skull.

“Killjoy cut the bad thoughts out…” The elf said in a monotonous happy way.

“This is Dadreel, we had to be invasive. He was prone to violent outbursts after some experience with dogs or somesuch in the past.” Killjoy shook his head. “We are almost at the common room.”

A large half moon shaped sofa and a low table before a fireplace dominated the common room. The back of a pink haired person could be seen immediately sitting in the sofa. A gnome stood on a footstool gazing out through the windows. He was muttering.

“And here we have Imoen. It is fortunate that you came when you did.” Killjoy said.

“Not Imoen… Irenicus… I-ren-i-cus.” Groder spelt the name out. “Do you have some sort of hearing problem?” The boy asked and turned to Killjoy.

Jaheira meanwhile had gone over to Imoen.

“Child, it is I, Jaheira. Are you well?” The half-elf placed a hand on Imoen`s shoulder. The girl did not react and Jaheira carefully turned the girl towards her. The pink haired girl stared straight past the druid into nothingness.

“So empty… so cold…” The girl intoned monotonously and then grabbed onto Jaheira`s hand. “I don’t want to be so empty.”

“Her consciousness comes and goes. As I said it is fortunate that you came when you did.” Killjoy said.

“Fortunate? Fortunate!?” Jaheira yelled angrily. “What have you done to her!?” The druid brought forth her staff with her free hand. “We are taking her out of here after you have showed us to Irenicus and I have a good mind to lay you beneath the earth with that monster as well.”

“You misunderstand.” Killjoy stated. His voice was free from the odd distortion now and was simply flat and clinical. “It is fortunate for me that you arrived when you did.”

The robe seemed to melt of the man, revealing first a mask of flesh and the two blue glaciers peering out from behind it. Next came the broad, leather strap crisscrossed chest, after that the sarong clad waist and similarly leather crisscrossed legs.

The party began reaching for their weapons but Irenicus spoke a single syllable and they all froze. All expect Yoshimo. The Kara-Turan took a step back.

“Since Yoshimo did his job and slipped the drugs into your meals onboard the Galante, there will be no heroics.” Irenicus stated.

“What!” Groder spat and fought to move but nothing happened.

Nalia`s eyes had gone wide and were frozen like that. A swirl of emotion played in them.

“Perhaps the next time you will not arbitrarily trust strangers you meet in dungeons.” Irenicus advised. “Now sleep.”

“Traitor!” Jaheira ground out at the Kara-Turan. “I will not be the last to spit these words at you today!”

“Rath'arg! Og'elend!” Viconia spat in Drow before she sank to the floor.

Yoshimo lowered his head and looked away.

He looks stoned, indeed. Too much weed, I guess. ;)

“Well, there is only one place left to look.” Groder shrugged. “So do we kill him or can you pick his pockets, Yoshimo?

He did not seem to mind you poking at his eyes, he probably won’t mind you touching him up a bit. I mean picking the pocket.

“So.” The Drow began and glanced over at the half-elf. “What did the old sorcerer mean with his words?”

I didn’t quite get what he meant towards Jaheira anyway. Didn’t seem like he had much of a case…

Looked like Sphere of Chaos, very cool description too. ;)

Yes, I feel the smell of pretence in the air… the pretence of caring. :)

“Oh, for Silvanus sake.” Jaheira said and grabbed the ward stone from Nalia. Then the druid resolutely pulled the door open.

I guess Groder was hoping there would be a spike trap on the doors.

“Imoen, yes?” The man filled in. “We have heard. We are not as cut of from Athkatla as some would think. She is in the common room right now.”

“No.” Groder replied looking impatiently at Killjoy. “We are here for Irenicus.”

Yes, everyone loves Im-… err, Irenicus? :(

“That is only a child!” Jaheira yelled at Killjoy. “What has she done to warrant her being in this place?”

Like, duh… she is different? *snarl*

The girl changed, expanded and suddenly a perfect copy of Jaheira sat on the pillow. The Jaheira-copy stood and twirled around. Groder and Viconia snickered. Haer`Dalis smiled at Jaheira. The druid looked very displeased.

So where can I order a copy?

“As you can see, in a safe and structured environment she can be studied and is also safe from harm.” The alienist said.

Killjoy is just such a fitting name, isn’t it.

“He had a bad reaction to a spell. It is unfortunate but it does happen. We can now learn from his condition and prevent it from happening again.” Killjoy continued.

Bad reaction to a spell… heh, Irenicus probably isn’t even lying about that. :)

Nalia gripped Yoshimo tightly.

“This place is awful.” She said, her voice trembling.

Don’t you worry, it’ll get so much worse.

“Not Imoen… Irenicus… I-ren-i-cus.” Groder spelt the name out. “Do you have some sort of hearing problem?” The boy asked and turned to Killjoy.

Irenicus has been with you the whole time, you dunce. :(

“Fortunate? Fortunate!?” Jaheira yelled angrily. “What have you done to her!?” The druid brought forth her staff with her free hand. “We are taking her out of here after you have showed us to Irenicus and I have a good mind to lay you beneath the earth with that monster as well.”

Cool, now you can kill two rabbits with one arrow. :D

“Perhaps the next time you will not arbitrarily trust strangers you meet in dungeons.” Irenicus advised. “Now sleep.”

He has a point. Trusting Yoshi is pretty dumb. ;)

“Traitor!” Jaheira ground out at the Kara-Turan. “I will not be the last to spit these words at you today!”

“Rath'arg! Og'elend!” Viconia spat in Drow before she sank to the floor.

I wonder what she might have said there. :(

Are the chapters too long, too short?

The way I see them, they are just right. ;)

Outside the house, Viconia and Jaheira leaned against the sun kissed front wall. They watched the horizon where blue met endless blue.

Heh. They are like two world-weary Wild-West cowboys and/or gunmen... well. Cowgirls and gunwomen.

Yup. That's the scene after they - both silent, secretive, highly professional types - catch the bandits and/or corral the horses; when they share a bottle of whisky by the fireside, and suddenly one of them starts talking about that woman he knew 30 years ago o'er in Colorado. Viconia even rubs her hand like a man...

Don't mind me here. I'm just generally adoring of anything which involves world-weary, self-sufficient people approaching warily the idea of mutual trust. :)

A cry and a crash from inside the house disturbed their conversation.

Oh, damn.

Yay! 'Dalis at last shows that he can fight!

OK. That was Sphere of Chaos and Dispel Magic, I take it?
The dancing furniture was a great touch. As was the confused squirrel.

:(

“I am Killjoy, the alienist here.” He introduced himself.

Ooh. I call great use of vocabulary. Although... Killjoy? That smacks of humour. My type of humour. I don't want to share a type of humour with Irenicus! :)

“Makes its home… in the centre of the universe, dumb, blind idiot god…” The man ground out and then began beating his head against the wall while crying out. “Azatoth, Azatoth!”

Iy'a! Iy'a! Cthulhu fhtagn!

A large half moon shaped sofa and a low table before a fireplace dominated the common room. The back of a pink haired person could be seen immediately sitting in the sofa. A gnome stood on a footstool gazing out through the windows. He was muttering.

You know, the way you wrote this, with Irenicus introducing all, this really appears like some Victorian bedlam! :is impressed:

"Child, it is I, Jaheira. Are you well?” The half-elf placed a hand on Imoen`s shoulder. The girl did not react and Jaheira carefully turned the girl towards her. The pink haired girl stared straight past the druid into nothingness.

Ah. Now here are Imoen's Mary Sue powers manifesting... Either that, or Irenicus took her to a... hairdresser?

“So empty… so cold…” The girl intoned monotonously and then grabbed onto Jaheira`s hand. “I don’t want to be so empty.”

That said... poor Imoen. :(

“You misunderstand.” Killjoy stated. His voice was free from the odd distortion now and was simply flat and clinical. “It is fortunate for me that you arrived when you did.”

;) I probably shouldn't be so happy, but I love those moments where the Villain Reveals Him/Herself... and your Irenicus did it in style!

“Perhaps the next time you will not arbitrarily trust strangers you meet in dungeons.” Irenicus advised. “Now sleep.”

;) The advice is great, even if... next time?

“Traitor!” Jaheira ground out at the Kara-Turan. “I will not be the last to spit these words at you today!”

“Rath'arg! Og'elend!” Viconia spat in Drow before she sank to the floor.

Yoshimo lowered his head and looked away.

Aw. :(

:sniff:

The way I see it, you finished the chapter in the best place possible, and there was no need to write anything on the way much longer, so... Loved it. :D

That or too much Irenicus.

I didn’t quite get what he meant towards Jaheira anyway. Didn’t seem like he had much of a case…

He kind of alluded the rather fast blooming romance with the PC should Groder have been different (and older).

Yep, useless in the game but fun to play with.

I guess Groder was hoping there would be a spike trap on the doors.

I doubt that very much, well Ellie does but...

We are fresh out of Jaheiras, we have a nice new half-orc model though!

Bad reaction to a spell… heh, Irenicus probably isn’t even lying about that. :D
Nope, I am guessing that Irenicus had a hand in the bad reaction too.

Nalia gripped Yoshimo tightly.

“This place is awful.” She said, her voice trembling.

Don’t you worry, it’ll get so much worse.

Especially for her...
Irenicus has been with you the whole time, you dunce.
You think they would notice since in the game he actually does not change his voice. I think you would remember the voice of someone like him.

“Fortunate? Fortunate!?” Jaheira yelled angrily. “What have you done to her!?” The druid brought forth her staff with her free hand. “We are taking her out of here after you have showed us to Irenicus and I have a good mind to lay you beneath the earth with that monster as well.”
Well, it is the same rabbit...?

“Perhaps the next time you will not arbitrarily trust strangers you meet in dungeons.” Irenicus advised. “Now sleep.”
He has a point. Trusting Yoshi is pretty dumb. :|
Oh yeah.

"Hi! I am a random person in a madmans dungeon. Trust me!"

“Traitor!” Jaheira ground out at the Kara-Turan. “I will not be the last to spit these words at you today!”

“Rath'arg! Og'elend!” Viconia spat in Drow before she sank to the floor.

Vicky calls him a bastard and a traitor, not necessarily in that order. :)

Heh. They are like two world-weary Wild-West cowboys and/or gunmen... well. Cowgirls and gunwomen.

Heh, yeah. That works. :D

One of them are about to pull out a cigarette and light a match on her boot.

Thank you, I guess it does conway that kind of feeling.

Don't mind me here. I'm just generally adoring of anything which involves world-weary, self-sufficient people approaching warily the idea of mutual trust. :P

Thanks and they will be stuck with each other for a while longer now.

A cry and a crash from inside the house disturbed their conversation.

Oh, damn.

Yep.

Yay! 'Dalis at last shows that he can fight!

Well, some part of him needs to emulate the game. :)

OK. That was Sphere of Chaos and Dispel Magic, I take it?
The dancing furniture was a great touch. As was the confused squirrel.

Yep, Sphere and dispell. I figured other things would be affected by the magic as well.

Heh, thank you.

“I am Killjoy, the alienist here.” He introduced himself.

Ooh. I call great use of vocabulary. Although... Killjoy? That smacks of humour. My type of humour. I don't want to share a type of humour with Irenicus! :D

Irenicus does not have a sense of humor. :)

The REAL resident alienist is much displeased as we will see later.

“Makes its home… in the centre of the universe, dumb, blind idiot god…” The man ground out and then began beating his head against the wall while crying out. “Azatoth, Azatoth!”

Iy'a! Iy'a! Cthulhu fhtagn!

Ph'nglui mglw'nafh Cthulhu R'lyeh wgah'nagl fhtagn

A large half moon shaped sofa and a low table before a fireplace dominated the common room. The back of a pink haired person could be seen immediately sitting in the sofa. A gnome stood on a footstool gazing out through the windows. He was muttering.

You know, the way you wrote this, with Irenicus introducing all, this really appears like some Victorian bedlam! :is impressed:

Thank you. I do enjoy the setting of the Victorian asylum.

Eh... Yes!

The pink should have started going out and her hair should be longer. Go me!

“So empty… so cold…” The girl intoned monotonously and then grabbed onto Jaheira`s hand. “I don’t want to be so empty.”

That said... poor Imoen. :(

Yeah and she has Groder to deal with.

“You misunderstand.” Killjoy stated. His voice was free from the odd distortion now and was simply flat and clinical. “It is fortunate for me that you arrived when you did.”

:| I probably shouldn't be so happy, but I love those moments where the Villain Reveals Him/Herself... and your Irenicus did it in style!

I do like flourish and Thankee.

“Perhaps the next time you will not arbitrarily trust strangers you meet in dungeons.” Irenicus advised. “Now sleep.”

:) The advice is great, even if... next time?

My bad! ;)

Loved it. :)

Alright, thank you for commenting. I am kind of worried about the next chapter. Disrought Nalia is proving though to write.

Azatoth, is it? I would love for Groder to meet nightmarish creatures of fetid iridiscence, with countless myriad eyes forming like pustules of sickly green light, all the while emitting the mocking, eldritch cry, "Tekeli-li! Tekeli-li!". It would be very amusing and pleasurable to see Groder's sanity and sense of identity ripped to shreds by the loathesome, non-Euclidean creatures from beyond the dark corners of the universe. Would it be too much to hope that Groder will die a slow, agonizing death over millenia while he is made the personal plaything and harlot of Nyarlethotep? Perhaps kill him as a sacrifice to Father Dagon and Mother Hydra, after being partially eaten by Deep Ones?

Well. I certainly hope so.

The REAL alienist? Ooh. I can't wait.

You can quote that from memory? Even the apostrophes? ;)

Don't worry. I'm sure it will come out just fine.

Woah!

They have already met a Lovecraftian beast but insanity may still lie in Groder´s future unless it turns out to be a real showstopper.

I am guessing it went away with his spirit.

No, you would have to be insane to able to do that. :|

I just transcribed it from one of my books. :)
