It is early, early Thursday and I can`t sleep so here is another chapter of Beloved Child.

Beloved Child 21

“Are we going back to the vampires?” Nalia asked hotly. “Are we… you really going to do those things?”

Groder looked at Nalias worried face and then to Jaheira. The druid’s mouth was a taut line of dissaproval. Then he looked at the very worried Mook.

“By the nine hells, I am not going to anything.” He spat and shethed the daggers. “She just pissed me off. Coming in here like nothing…” The boy trailed off.

“I… I’ll tell the shadow master of your grievances.” Mook said hurriedly and looked longingly at the open window.

“Fine… fine.” Groder waved a hand in dismissal. Mook gave him a look and then she slipped out of the room.

“Was this a part of your brilliant plan to antagonize the shadow thieves as well?” Jaheira asked after the shaken Mook had left.

“They expect our help yet they spy on us and can’t seem to aid us when we need it. I’d say they are doing a pretty good job at antagonizing me.” Groder replied and shrugged.
“They still need our help; I don’t think they will back down. They need this as much as we do.”

“It was still a rash action, Groder.” The druid crossed the room. She put a hand on his shoulder. “You need to think before you act.”

Groder nodded, muttered some apology and Jaheria nodded. She bid them a goodnight and left the common room.

“All the acting has tired me so I think I will go to bed as well.” Groder said.

Viconia caught up with him just as he was about to enter his room.

“The druid was acting oddly.” She remarked.

“Oh, that… I put on a little show earlier. I think it may have softened up her attitude a bit.” Groder told the Drow quietly.

Viconia smiled.

“Clever…” She whispered and drew a finger along the boy’s neck as she left him, heading for her own room.

Nalia and Yoshimo were left alone in the common room.

“Ugh… he is so vile sometimes…” Nalia said. “Has he always been like this? I don`t understand why you stay with him.”

Yoshimo shrugged.

“I do not know, we met not long ago. As for why I travel with him, you know I am endebted. It is a matter of honor.”

A silence fell between them.

“It is odd that Groder and Viconia managed to steal the single rooms despite not being here when we moved in.” Yoshimo said filling out the silence.

“Do you want to share a room with either of them?” Nalia asked smiling slightly.

“You know, young lovely, one should not speak ill of ones…” He paused and stroked his chin for a few seconds. “…allies.” Yoshimo finished.

“Well, it has barely been two full weeks and we have been caught up in so much already, I suppose they will grow on me.” The girl replied and then looked wistful. She picked the funeral invitation from a pocket.

“I had almost forgotten about this, my own father and I practically forgot the arrangements that would have to take place after his death.” She trailed off, eyes downcast.

“You cannot be blamed; you were turned out of your home and have had no way to arrange for it.” He took her hand and smiled reassuringly.

“I know but it won’t be seen that way.” She looked at his slightly impish smile. “I don’t fancy meeting my aunt or the Roenalls either.”

“Do you regret coming with us?” He asked.

Nalia shook her head.

“No, no I don’t, I know this will sound crazy but I think this may actually be good for me.”

“The chance of being killed on a weekly basis is good?” Yoshimo smiled and leaned back in the chair.

“No, I am being serious.” Nalia said and then she smiled. “Thank you.”

“Thank you for what?” He asked

“For making me smile.” She replied and despite the tears still managed to show a dazzling smile.

“Always at you service, young lovely.” Yoshimo glanced out through the window. The moon was breaking through the sheet of clouds.

“Maybe we should retire as well.” He suggested.

“Could you come with me tomorrow, to the funeral? I do not want to go alone.” Nalia asked.

“Of course.” Yoshimo answered.

They got up from their seats and then Nalia asked hesitantly:

“Could… could I stay with you tonight. I really don’t want to be alone…” A blush crept into her face as she awaited his reply.

Yoshimo was surprised but the sudden question and remained silent.

“Uh… nothing like that… just… uh…” Nalia`s face was burning.

“Just together?” The Kara-Turan asked.

Nalia nodded. Yoshimo took her by the hand and led her into his single bed room. He removed only his light leathers and rested on the bed fully clothed. Nalia did much the same choosing to not undress. As she lay down she snaked her arms around Yoshimo`s torso and rested her head against his back. Yoshimo was thankful she could see his face. He had to convince Nalia to stay behind when they left for spellhold; he doubted any of them would be coming back from that place. Thinking dark and depressing thoughts he drifted of into to sleep after Nalia.

**

Groder woke up to sunlight and the sounds of busy streets. The boy buried his head deeper in the pillow and waited for someone to begin knocking on the door. When no one did he eventually got up and began dressing. Muffled voices floated through the door. He paused by it and put his ear close to the wood. He couldn’t really make out what was being said but he thought that it was Jaheria and… Keldorn?

Groder did not have any greater wish to meet the paladin again especially not after that little incident with the man’s wife. He pulled on his boots and made sure the daggers were there. Opening the window he tried to gauge the drop to the ground. Deciding it was safe enough he jumped out and landed on the street that ran past the inns west side. When he landed he had time to spot the backs of Nalia and Yoshimo disappearing into the noon crowds before someone began clapping behind him.

“Nice jump, I heard you scared the pants of poor little Mook last night.”

The woman was pale and dark hair fell around her face but she was no vampire.

“I am Sime and will apparently be your little keeper from now on. The shadow master doesn’t want a repeat of the kidnapping or you going of to lick with vamps.”

“Is there a reason all my liaisons are women?” Groder asked.

“Don’t flatter yourself. The deadliest assassins in the world are women you know.” Sime responded.

Groder quickly raised his hands.

“I didn’t mean to offend.” He smiled. “You are here to follow me around? Would you like to attend a funeral with me?”

Sime raised a slim eyebrow.

“This has to be the first time I have been invited to a funeral. I do intend to follow you but we can do that in two ways.”

“Two ways?” Groder echoed

“Either you see me or you don’t” She said.

Groder shrugged.

“Your choice, it might be better to not be seen in case someone tries something.”

“Which is why you are going to run around alone?” Sime queried.

“Well, I will not be alone now will I?”

Groder darted off into the crowds after the noble girl and Kara-Turan. He glanced back slightly and saw no sign of Sime. The boy felt an earnest sense of security knowing that the shadow thief was trailing somewhere behind him, this woman seemed more competent and less flighty then the redheaded half-elf.

Nalia and Yoshimo were a bit surprised when Groder turned up at their side while walking towards the city’s graveyard district.

“I thought I should pay my condolences.” Groder said.

“Or avoid a certain a paladin.” Nalia said looking cross.

“My, my, how cynical of you, Nalia” Groder chuckled. He was in far better spirits then either of his two companions.

**

The difference between the graveyard district during the night and during the day was remarkable to say the least. The noon high sun shone down on great edifices, beautifully carved gravestones, neatly paved paths that ran between exquisite mausoleums. Monuments to Kelemvor to rose towards the sky and the warming sun. As they entered the district they were approached by a haughty looking man.

“Are you the Lady De`Arnise and guests?” He queried.

Nalia nodded and they were led by the man to a terrace, it was sparely populated with a few noble’s here and there. A sombre looking man approached them.

“Welcome Miss De`Arnise, I am Laslow, the cleric for this procession. I believe we are waiting for some more arrivals. I will call upon you when we will begin.”

“Thank you, perhaps I shall speak with some of the other attendees.” Nalia answered.

A dark clad man came up to them almost immediately.

“You have my deepest condolences for your loss, Nalia.” He said. “I held much respect for your father.” He looked around. “Apparently I was one of the few; I had expected a larger turnout then this.”

“Think nothing of it Lord Clancy. It may be for the best if only those close to him came.”

They made their way though the small crowd of mourners that offered their condolences and most seemed genuinely surprised that there were so few of them. It was pleasant until they encountered a noblewoman that was very distraught over the fact that Nalia now apparently lived as a wandering gypsy.

“A what?” Nalia said incredulously and gaped at the woman.

“Oh yes, Isaea had painted quite the unsavoury picture.” The woman replied.

“Oh he has, has he?” Nalia raised an eyebrow and put her hands on her hips.

“It must be horrible.” The woman assured Nalia and then glanced at Yoshimo and Groder. The glance she awarded Yoshimo was a disapproving one.

“Are these you’re… travelling companions?” The woman asked.

“Yes, now if you excuse me I think I must have a word with Lord Roenall.”

Nalia quite firmly pushed past the noble woman whom was very upset over Nalia`s boorish behaviour and muttered something about bad influences. They went past the woman and headed towards a man clad in black. Isaea Roenall looked the same like the last time they laid eyes on him, down to the black clothes but sans the burly guards.

A man whom could only be the young Roenalls father was deep in conversation with another man. The older Roenall had a large bushy moustache and a small curly goatee. The same fine lines could be seen in both their faces. Isaea had inherited his mother pointy nose however. That Lady Roenall leaned against the terrace railing and looked as bored as she most likely always did. Not the attitude to bring to a funeral to be sure. Next to her, Lady Delcia Caan chatted away to the bored woman.

“Ah, Nalia.” Isaea said and smiled when he saw her. The smile didn’t fade when he saw Groder and Yoshimo.

“Isaea.” The tone in Nalias voice was ice cold.

“How lovely to see you again but look at you, you are dirty. You look like you have been slumming again.” He waved a finger at Nalia.

“I do not slum, I help people!” She practically shouted. “What have you been telling people, Isaea?”

“You did make some foolish decisions while grieving for your father Nalia. It is all understandable.” Isaea smiled.

Isaeas father, lord Roenall had ended his conversation and came over to them.

“Nalia. Horrible business this and Isaea tells me that you were tricked into taking up…” He chuckled “adventuring.”

“I have not been tricked into anything.” Nalia said. “Isaea doesn’t know what he is talking about.”

Lord Roenall shrugged seeming to indicate that it wouldn’t be the first time.

“It is your life; you should do what you think your father would have wanted.” He said. “My condolences, Ambrose were after all, a good friend.”

Isaea gaped at his father apparently not expecting that reaction. He turned his head towards his mother to see if there were any support there but his mother was looking out over the graveyard with Delcia. As Lord Roenall walked off, Isaea growled:

“This isn’t over.”

“Yes it is.” Yoshimo said, his face dark.

Before anything could happen a voice floated through the air.

“Lord Firecam, what a pleasant surprise.”

Heh, if these two would not be here, I think he very well might have done those things.

“Was this a part of your brilliant plan to antagonize the shadow thieves as well?” Jaheira asked after the shaken Mook had left.

To be fair, they might not have cared too much if he had done something to Mook – Aran really is very desperate to secure their help, so he might forgive some things.

“Oh, that… I put on a little show earlier. I think it may have softened up her attitude a bit.” Groder told the Drow quietly.

Viconia smiled.

It’s only going to work for so long…

“Ugh… he is so vile sometimes…” Nalia said. “Has he always been like this? I don`t understand why you stay with him.”

Yoshi is definitely not an angel himself… he would not care too much.

“It is odd that Groder and Viconia managed to steal the single rooms despite not being here when we moved in.” Yoshimo said filling out the silence.

I guess Groder is hoping that this way Vic can sneak in for a few nightly visits now and then..

“Well, it has barely been two full weeks and we have been caught up in so much already, I suppose they will grow on me.” The girl replied and then looked wistful. She picked the funeral invitation from a pocket.

Better hope they do NOT grow on you.

They got up from their seats and then Nalia asked hesitantly:

Not that it will make it much easier for her if she has already fallen in love with you before then.

“I am Sime and will apparently be your little keeper from now on. The shadow master doesn’t want a repeat of the kidnapping or you going of to lick with vamps.”

Oooh, are you giving her a bigger role? Neat!

“I thought I should pay my condolences.” Groder said.

“Or avoid a certain a paladin.” Nalia said looking cross.

My, are you truly questioning his sincerity?

“You have my deepest condolences for your loss, Nalia.” He said. “I held much respect for your father.” He looked around. “Apparently I was one of the few; I had expected a larger turnout then this.”

Which basically means that D’Arnise family was pretty poor compared to most nobles.

She is, of course, just thrilled about the Roenalls.

 Poor Groder! Probably Lady Maria is with him as well, and Jaheira might be trailing behind too!

It is a good thing to have walking, talking morals with you.

“Was this a part of your brilliant plan to antagonize the shadow thieves as well?” Jaheira asked after the shaken Mook had left.

To be fair, they might not have cared too much if he had done something to Mook – Aran really is very desperate to secure their help, so he might forgive some things.

Or wait with the reprisals till after the problem is solved.

Yep, Gorder will eventually attract foot-in-mouth disease and Jaheira will be... displeased.

“Ugh… he is so vile sometimes…” Nalia said. “Has he always been like this? I don`t understand why you stay with him.”

Yoshi is definitely not an angel himself… he would not care too much.

Yeah but Nalia doesn`t know that.

Oh yeah!

Yeah, they will get to have some good times though.

“I am Sime and will apparently be your little keeper from now on. The shadow master doesn’t want a repeat of the kidnapping or you going of to lick with vamps.”

Oooh, are you giving her a bigger role? Neat! ;)

Yep, now she gets to hang around a bit more.

“I thought I should pay my condolences.” Groder said.

“Or avoid a certain a paladin.” Nalia said looking cross.

Look at him... how can you not doubt him? ;)

I figure they were not exactly in the top...

Nice couple. Or maybe not really...

Yoshimo was thankful she could see his face.

Perhaps "could NOT see"?

He had to convince Nalia to stay behind when they left for spellhold; he doubted any of them would be coming back from that place. Thinking dark and depressing thoughts he drifted of into to sleep after Nalia.

Lets just say that if any other party member will survive (except Nalia) Yoshimo will not).

“Don’t flatter yourself. The deadliest assassins in the world are women you know.” Sime responded.

I always thought that the best assassin are unknown ones  .

How realistic, you wanted to say )

Before anything could happen a voice floated through the air.

“Lord Firecam, what a pleasant surprise.”

Not very pleasant for a certain boy...

Good chapter, usually I like characters of dubious morale. Although I fail to see how Viconia could find potential for any nobility in Groder. Does she have rather peculiar definition of this word?

Well, he does not actaully trust Bodhi so it was bravado.

Not really, In the end i think Viconia would profit more from a "nice" kind of guy.

Yoshimo was thankful she could see his face.

Perhaps "could NOT see"?

Yep... Word and its inability to do auto spellchecks when you have reached a certain number of words has struck again.

He had to convince Nalia to stay behind when they left for spellhold; he doubted any of them would be coming back from that place. Thinking dark and depressing thoughts he drifted of into to sleep after Nalia.

Something like that.

I am not really sure of your meaning here.

Nope but he is a fast runner.

Her notion of nobility would be close to the Drow kind but in retrospect it may not have been the best of formulations.
