Korgan set the fire. It was not his usual task, but he did it without being asked.
"You seem contemplative, Dwarf," Edwin said. There was no challenge in the Thayvian's voice. More of a question.
"Our time to kill Irenicus be comin soon, Spellchucker," Korgan answered. "I feel it in me bones. It wont be like the madhouse. We really will get him this time. Or him us."
Edwin wanted to say something snide at that point, about Korgan doubting their victory, about his unusually mellow mood. But he didn't. He just closed his mouth and nodded.
The former Red Wizard, draped in black now as he always was, meandered over to Imoen sat, reading out of her spellbook.
"Your power has increased, young one," Edwin said without preamble.
Imoen glanced up at him, then returned her attentions to her spellbook. Her blue hair hung around her face. "Even in Spellhold I learned new things."
"Oh really?" Edwin raised a brow. When no answer was forthcoming, he held back his normal bluster and asked, "Before Irenicus broke loose, I presume."
"Before and after," she answered. "Even after, he didn't care what I studied outside of his experiments. He even....allowed me to study his notes on what he was doing to me. Said it wouldn't matter." She shuddered a little at the memory.
But she was not the puling weakling Edwin remembered. "You have grown strong," he said. "(Reluctant though I am to admit it, I am impressed.)"
Imoen flashed him a thin smile. "Love you too, Eddie. Now lemme lone, huh? You know what it's like when you can't memorize spells."
"Yes indeed, yes indeed." Edwin turned away. He didn't say who Imoen reminded him of; himself, after he had lost his nation and his home. She had grown. He had left behind the red and chosen black; she had left behind the pink and chosen blue. The similarity discomforted him, somehow.
But she was right. He got out his own spellbook and got to work.
----
Jan roasted a turnip over the fire on a stick. The others had rations, but he felt he had earned one of his own roast turnips for the evening.
Tree sat beside him, expression calm and distant. Anomen sat on the other side, quietly turning his own beef rations into salted stew in a small pot. Without being asked, Jan tossed the priest an onion. Anomen inclined his head gratefully, , carved it up with a dagger, and added it to the pot.
"I'm wondering," said Jan. "Will either of you say with Adrian, once we beat that turnip-hating wizard?"
"Yes," Tree said, without hesitation. "I know my mother is safe now. The Forgotten God watches Adrian closely."
"I want to," Anomen said. "He has done much for me. But....I have concerns here. My sister, and what's left of the Order and what must be done about it. What of you, Gnome?"
"Lissa and Jaella are safe at the Keep for now. I'll return for them in time. But I don't think that masked fool will be the end of my time with Adrian."
A companionable silence fell between them then, which was finally broken when Jan said, "It reminds me of the time my Cousin Jelbap went to Neverwinter...."
Tree and Anomen both groaned.
----
Viconia was asleep in Adrian's arms. After being restored, she had consumed a double helping of rations. But even before that, when Adrian had carried her from the temple, she had brought him a message. A message from Shar.
The message was, simply, that Shar had long since severed her ties to Cyric, and should Adrian achieve Godhood, the Mother of Night would not begrudge Viconia becoming his priestess. It would, she had said, be a boon to her to have ties to a more palatable God of Murder than Cyric.
Adrian had no answer for that. Before reaching Spellhold, he and Viconia had had a heated argument about his ambitions. He had been certain he did not want Godhood at that time. Now he was not so sure. With all the things that had happend to him since--stripped of his soul and with his father's power pulsing in his veins--he might not have a choice but to take that power, when the time came.
But he was speculating on air. They had to survive Irenicus first. Cradling Viconia in his arms, he rolled over and went to sleep.

They made camp that night outside the temple, not even bothering to return to Immesvale.
Korgan set the fire. It was not his usual task, but he did it without being asked.
Now that's a first. Korgan thinking!"You seem contemplative, Dwarf," Edwin said. There was no challenge in the Thayvian's voice. More of a question.
He's so sexy in blackThe former Red Wizard, draped in black now as he always was, meandered over to Imoen sat, reading out of her spellbook.
Irenicus would be that much of an idiot."Before and after," she answered. "Even after, he didn't care what I studied outside of his experiments. He even....allowed me to study his notes on what he was doing to me. Said it wouldn't matter." She shuddered a little at the memory.
No not a story! Anything but that!A companionable silence fell between them then, which was finally broken when Jan said, "It reminds me of the time my Cousin Jelbap went to Neverwinter...."
I would too.Tree and Anomen both groaned.
Nice to know one of the gods care. The message was, simply, that Shar had long since severed her ties to Cyric, and should Adrian achieve Godhood, the Mother of Night would not begrudge Viconia becoming his priestess. It would, she had said, be a boon to her to have ties to a more palatable God of Murder than Cyric.
I'm going to get on reading the rest of the story, soon I hope but I loved the chapter it was great.

EDIT: And of course the 360's and 70's. What can I say. I'm terrible for reading ahead. It's why I read Laufey's latest even though I haven't finished all of In the Cards.
