Hello people. Almost posted chap 20 by mistake.

News at eleven. In-game dialogue found mutilated in back alley. Police suspect talent less hack writer. More on the story as it breaks!

Edited and a few sentences added at the end.

Beloved Child 19

The charge of the slaves was a silent thing; the only sound was the echoes of feet hitting the stone floor. The Githyanki warriors charged through the mind controlled slaves towards the mind flayers leaving a few corpses in their wake. Groder darted forward and swung his axe at one of the slaves. To his surprise the charmed man reacted quickly and was only glanced. He had expected them to be more like puppets then autonomous beings.

The slaves ranged from experienced and well equipped guards presumably from the noble houses the mind flayer’s had conned into their faux secret society to guttersnipes and thieves.
Groder found that Azure Edge did a good job at cutting through shields and lighter armour as well as leaving terrible burns wherever it struck. The group had managed to form a semi circle around Nalia and Yoshimo whom were providing a steady support of arrows. Most of these flew over Gorders head, him being shorter then everyone else and he wished he had brought that helmet Jaheria bought for him. He was standing between the druid and the paladin Keldorn. The aged warrior fought with precise techniques. Each powerful blow felled or forced back more of the slaves.

Erie multicoloured lights and sounds bounced off the dark ceiling and walls in the furthest end of the dome. Groder had time to see a Githyanki disintegrate into dust before his vision was blocked by another mind controlled human. Suddenly the slaves seized up and began lurching back towards the fighting Githyanki and Illithid.

“The mind flayers must be losing.” Jaheria said. “Any injuries?”

“Only scrapes and bruises.” Viconia said as she healed cuts on Haer`Dalises arm.

“They are coming!” Keldron cried.

The group snapped their heads towards him and saw two mind flayers heading their way. The beings glided fast and gracefully over the floor heading straight for the party. In the other side of the room the Githyanki were finishing off the last slaves. The mind flayer’s that were approaching began gesturing in the air. Soon after, gusts of glittering dust blew in over the party. The irritation and pain made Groders eye blurry with tears. The rest of the party was similarly affected staggering about rubbing their eyes. Through blurry eyes Groder could see one of the beings heading straight for him, tentacles spread wide and it horrible circular mouth visible. Then his vision was obscured by a large shadow and suddenly the mind flayer was hanging in mind air, skewered on Keldorn`s sword. The second mind flayer barrelled passed them heading towards the exit.

“Somebody stop it!” Jaheira shouted.

As it reached the exit, the air before the creature blurred and a Githyanki stood before it bringing its two swords down in a scissor motion. The mind flayer fell to the floor with blue ichors pooling around it.

The Githyanki dispelled the glitter-dust from the party and instructed them to return the Five Flagons to receive their payment. As the group exited the hidden lair of the mind flayer’s Keldron spoke up.

“That will reverberate through these old bones for a while. If you are looking for commissions then I believe I may be able to convince the churches to pay you to aid me in finding the cult that have stolen so many of their members.”

“Thank you, but this hunt was thrown at us quite abruptly, we need to rest and recuperate for a bit.” Jaheria said.

The old paladin then eyed Groder.

“I would not mind having a conversation with you as well.” He said. “If you do not mind I would like to invite you to my home for a short while.”

Viconia feigned shock.

“Will it really be alright for you to let me into your home, oh noble crusader.”

Keldron pressed his mouth into a taut line.

“Do not push my tolerance drow.”

“I see no problem with it.” Groder said and smiled. “We just need to stop by The Five Flagons for our reward.”

The aged paladin nodded.

“Follow me; I know a good route out of the sewers.”

Yoshimo walked up next to Groder and whispered.

“He is a paladin; he senses the Bhaal taint in you. Is it wise to follow his lead?”

“Yes, it will be fine” Groder whispered back. “I can just make a little sob show over my horrid fate and that will be that. We need to get him out of our hair.”

“I hope your acting is as good as you think it is.” Yoshimo whispered back.

**

The Githyanki proved to be generous and aside from the 9000 they handed the party, the female Githyanki gave them a belt she had retrieved from the mind flayer’s lair.

“We have no use for trinkets like these.” She growled.

“Out of curiosity… what did the mind flayers do here?” Groder asked.

“They sought control as they always have and always will.” The female continued. “They seek to establish their empire anew by all means necessary and we will continue to fight them.”

They bid the Githyanki adieu and the party along with the paladin returned to their suite to count the gold.

“About 11000” Groder whistled. “We are making good progress.”

“We would be even closer if we had taken Bodhi`s offer. There may still be time to make amends.” Yoshimo said.

“No, I do not trust her Yoshimo.” The boy answered. “I will not crawl back even if I did.”

Yoshimo shrugged. They filled Keldorn in on most happenings and why they were collecting money.

“And you do well in not trusting the damned.” Keldorn intoned powerfully when they were finished.

Only a pair of dark eyes saw Yoshimo twitch slightly. When the Kara-Turan excused himself, Haer`Dalis followed. The actor came up behind the rogue in corridor with a grace and silence that he had yet not shown. Haer`Dalis rested one of his blades against Yoshimo`s throat and the other pressed against the rogues crotch.

“Some of us are not blind.” The bard whispered his playful tones were now icy cold. “If you harm the Raven, nothing will keep you safe from me.”

The actor slid the blades away and disappeared as silently as he had come. Yoshimo closed his eyes and breathed heavily.

**

“Are you alright?”

Yoshimo was drawn from his musings and looked at Nalia whom was walking next to him.

“Yes, I was just thinking.” He flashed a smile at the girl. She smiled back.

The girl and the bounty hunter trailed at the end of the group. Yoshimo stared briefly at the purple haired actor that was talking animatedly to Groder and Viconia. Then his gaze shifted to the old paladin in the lead and Jaheria. He wondered if anyone else but the bard knew. If they did then he would be dead, did he have to dispose of the bard?

“There is my estate.” Keldorn announced suddenly and pointed to a large building in the southern portion of the governmental district.

“Oh, I remember.” Nalia told Yoshimo. “The Firecam estate has some of the very finest gardens in Athkathla.”

“I would like to see them.” He answered and smiled warmly at the young woman.

As they drew closer to the estate, Nalia walked up beside Keldorn.

“Would you mind if we took a look at your gardens?”

“Not at all, miss De`Arnise. I also want you to know that you always will have a place to say at our estate. Your father was a good man and he will be missed.”

Nalia nodded.

“Thank you, Lord Firecam.”

“Call me Keldorn, please.” The paladin responded.

In order to get to the Firecam estate they had to walk down a few stairs into a smaller park that held beautiful shrubberies and stone benches. They passed through it and stopped by the façade of the Firecam estate. It was a large red building with tall arched windows. Nalia took Yoshimo by the hand and led him through a pair of gates at the side of the building.

“The servants have tended it well during my absence.” Keldron remarked.

“Are your flights long?” Haer`Dalis asked.

“The order and duty are harsh mistresses.” Keldron replied. “It has been some time and it is good to smell the airs of home again.”

They entered the estate and came into a large hall. The walls were a pleasant blue and the floor tiled in black and white marble. A young blonde maid came to greet them and stopped when she saw Keldorn.

“Oh my, Lord Firecam, you have returned.” The girl seemed a bit at uneasy at arrival of her employer. Groders eyes remained on the woman’s ample chest until Viconia smacked the side of his head. Haer`Dalis eyes were at the same spot but no one smacked him.

“Yes Peony, It has been some time. Could you fetch Lady Maria and the children?”

“Of course, my lord.” The maid nodded and disappeared into a nearby door. It soon opened and a young girl of about eighteen years old stepped out. A girl of about ten followed close behind holding onto the older girl’s trousers.

Keldron`s face lit up when he saw them.

“Leona, how goes the studies? Is the priests still kind to you for my sake?”

“It is fine father.” Leona was derisive and Groder thought he detected the hint of a sneer.

“Fine, that is fine.” Keldorn seemed to not have noticed. “And sweet Vesper. How are you?” He addressed the younger girl.

The girl hid behind her older sister and tugged at her trousers.

“Leona, who is that man?” She asked sounding a bit scared.

“I fear there is trouble in paradise.” Haer`Dalis whispered to Groder. The boy nodded.

Before Keldorn could recover from the shock he had received from not being recognized by his own daughter, a woman swept into the hall followed by the maid. She had brown hair with a few streaks of grey as well. She had aged well and still retained most of her young beauty. The likeness with her daughters was unmistakable.

“Who are these people then?” She asked, her tone was harsh and Keldron seemed surprised.

“Heathens you converted in Calimport? Pilgrims on a journey from Saradush?”

Keldorn seemed a bit unsure at first.

“This is Groder, they are searching for…”

Maria cut him off.
“I do not care Keldorn. It has been three months since you were last here and then not long enough to even leave your scent about the place.”

“Maria, the church is harsh taskmaster, you knew this when we married.” Keldorn began but Maria cut him off again.

“I know but what about Vesper and Leona, they barely know you. They… they need a father, someone who is there for them.” She paused and a look of immense sadness overtook her features. “And I need a husband, someone who is here for more then a day at a time.”

“I know…” Keldron tried to interject but Maria went on.

“What if… what if I don’t love you anymore, Keldorn? What if I need someone to be here with me and not in a faraway land?” She paused for a while. “I have… I have been seeing another man, Keldorn. He… The girls love him and he brings me the comfort I need.”

“Maria…” The old paladin looked as if he had been struck. He leaned against the wall and then sank into a chair.

“Maybe we should leave.” Viconia murmured.

“Who is it?” Keldron was looking straight at Maria, his gaze uneven.

“Sir William of Thorpe.” Maria replied.

“Go… go to your daughter Maria, I need to think…” Keldrons voice was strained and Maria ushered her daughter before her into an adjoining room. Peony left quickly through another door, it led to the kitchens by the smell that wafted through it.

“Curse the dictates of honour.” Keldron growled. “I have to bring this before the courts and see the love of my life…” He trailed off.

“Sir Keldorn.” Jaheira said. “Would it not be prudent to seek out this William of Thorpe first?”

“I know him, I thought him an honourable man until now.” Keldron sighed. “He makes his residence at the promenade.”

“Let Jaheira handle this.” Groder whispered to Viconia and Haer`Dalis. “We will just back off.”

“No, I want to see how this plays out.” Viconia said.

Haer`Dalis shrugged, smiled and quietly slipped through to the kitchens. Groder silently left the hall as well and found himself in a well furnished sitting room. In the middle was a small fountain boxed in by plants and plush sofas. He made his way over to one of them and sat down, taking in the room. Vesper appeared suddenly at the end of the sofa. The little girl stared at him with the petulance only small children can muster.

“Why did you come here with that man?” She asked, half hidden behind the sofas arm.

Good riddance to the game dialogue!

Most of these flew over Gorders head, him being shorter then everyone else and he wished he had brought that helmet Jaheria bought for him.

Umm… why didn’t he? Was he afraid of making Viconia jealous?

As it reached the exit, the air before the creature blurred and a Githyanki stood before it bringing its two swords down in a scissor motion. The mind flayer fell to the floor with blue ichors pooling around it.

Well, that wasn’t too hard! Though I wonder if all the illithid have been dealt with.

“I would not mind having a conversation with you as well.” He said. “If you do not mind I would like to invite you to my home for a short while.”

He’s not exactly the prime son-in-law material, Keldorn. :D

The aged paladin nodded.

“Follow me; I know a good route out of the sewers.”

Coming here often, are you Keldorn? Maria would be flattered to know…

“Yes, it will be fine” Groder whispered back. “I can just make a little sob show over my horrid fate and that will be that. We need to get him out of our hair.”

Your sob show never worked with Jaheira… no great hopes that it’ll work with Keldorn!

“They sought control as they always have and always will.” The female continued. “They seek to establish their empire anew by all means necessary and we will continue to fight them.”

I’d be slightly worried whether the Gith aren’t up to no good themselves!

“We would be even closer if we had taken Bodhi`s offer. There may still be time to make amends.” Yoshimo said.

You’re just a pervy vamp fancier, Yoshi!

“Some of us are not blind.” The bard whispered his playful tones were now icy cold. “If you harm the Raven, nothing will keep you safe from me.”

Why do you care… if the Raven dies, surely it would have all been the Entropy at work, no?

The girl and the bounty hunter trailed at the end of the group. Yoshimo stared briefly at the purple haired actor that was talking animatedly to Groder and Viconia. Then his gaze shifted to the old paladin in the lead and Jaheria. He wondered if anyone else but the bard knew. If they did then he would be dead, did he have to dispose of the bard?

I bloody hope so! :?

In order to get to the Firecam estate they had to walk down a few stairs into a smaller park that held beautiful shrubberies and stone benches. Nalia took Yoshimo by the hand and led him through a pair of gates at the side of the building.

Poor Nalia… I lose a lot of sympathy for Yoshi if he’s taking advantage of her even knowing that he will betray them eventually.

Ouch!!! :D

“Maria…” The old paladin looked as if he had been struck. He leaned against the wall and then sank into a chair.

I feel bad for them both. :D

“Let Jaheira handle this.” Groder whispered to Viconia and Haer`Dalis. “We will just back off.”

“No, I want to see how this plays out.” Viconia said.

She senses a potential for spilled blood!

Hmm… quite an abrupt ending… are you sure you didn’t cut something off?

Heh, we've already all read the in-game dialogue, so bring on the "mutilating"! :D

Interested to see where the Keldorn plot will lead and where HD's concern for Groder comes from - so nothing can disturb his observing? - and if Yoshimo will have to "dispose" of him. I've also noticed that there's a few typos of Keldorn too.

Heh...

No, he just doesn`t like helmets. Besides they are a chore when you have long hair.

As it reached the exit, the air before the creature blurred and a Githyanki stood before it bringing its two swords down in a scissor motion. The mind flayer fell to the floor with blue ichors pooling around it.

Who knows... but this is one little ring that has been permanently put down.

“I would not mind having a conversation with you as well.” He said. “If you do not mind I would like to invite you to my home for a short while.”

He’s not exactly the prime son-in-law material, Keldorn. :D

:D

Who would not want a charming arrogant murderous young man around ones daughters?

The aged paladin nodded.

“Follow me; I know a good route out of the sewers.”

Coming here often, are you Keldorn? Maria would be flattered to know…

Some men visit prostitutes.... Keldorn goes on crusades.

“Yes, it will be fine” Groder whispered back. “I can just make a little sob show over my horrid fate and that will be that. We need to get him out of our hair.”

Your sob show never worked with Jaheira… no great hopes that it’ll work with Keldorn!

Well, he is arrogant enough to think it will work.

“They sought control as they always have and always will.” The female continued. “They seek to establish their empire anew by all means necessary and we will continue to fight them.”

I’d be slightly worried whether the Gith aren’t up to no good themselves!

They are too busy chasing down all those swords that get stolen all the time. :D

“We would be even closer if we had taken Bodhi`s offer. There may still be time to make amends.” Yoshimo said.

You’re just a pervy vamp fancier, Yoshi!

Well, Bodhi most likely thinks she is easy to fancy.

“Some of us are not blind.” The bard whispered his playful tones were now icy cold. “If you harm the Raven, nothing will keep you safe from me.”

Why do you care… if the Raven dies, surely it would have all been the Entropy at work, no?

Things must run their due course as well and he has not gotten to have fun yet.

Haer`Dalis may be found floating in a river. :D

In order to get to the Firecam estate they had to walk down a few stairs into a smaller park that held beautiful shrubberies and stone benches. He may try to rescue her yet.

Groder: Well yes, that was unecessary. Seeing them how could I not stare?

The girl hid behind her older sister and tugged at her trousers.

“Leona, who is that man?” She asked sounding a bit scared.

Ouch!!! :?

Ouch indeed. When your ten year old does not know you it is bad.

I feel bad for them both. :(

It is really very sad. I think Maria is understanding of Keldorns calling but
love needs to be confirmed you know.

“Let Jaheira handle this.” Groder whispered to Viconia and Haer`Dalis. “We will just back off.”

“No, I want to see how this plays out.” Viconia said.

She senses a potential for spilled blood!

Like a dark elf shark! There may be conversions in there as well. Shar is the lady of loss after all.

Haer`Dalis shrugged, smiled and quietly slipped through to the kitchens. Groder silently left the hall as well and found himself in a well furnished sitting room. Yes, I know it is abrupt and I thought about adding the first few sentences from the next chapter. In fact I will do just that and see what happens.

Keldorns plot leads to backstory.

HD wants to see this to the end, he is a moderate doomguard. There is of course another reason as well.

It won't be missed.

As it reached the exit, the air before the creature blurred and a Githyanki stood before it bringing its two swords down in a scissor motion. The mind flayer fell to the floor with blue ichors pooling around it.

Hehe, even in the unmodded game it is not easy battle. You have to know exactly what are you doing - protections, summons, etc. Giths were actually rather helpful )

“I would not mind having a conversation with you as well.” He said. “If you do not mind I would like to invite you to my home for a short while.”

Well, comparing to Sarevok or Yaga-shura Groder is rather noble and acceptable Bhaalspawn.

He would do well to warn someone, though. Preferably Viconia - even if she would not believe him at first, she would not dismiss the warning completely - mature Drow noble (especially priestess) simply has to be very careful ... may be even kind of paranoid.

Oh yeah... in fact more than one trouble.

I am sure that most of the party would like to.

Ah, complicated surfacer's life...But Jaheira is may be the only one who can actually handle the problem. But Haer'Dalis's or Groder's attempts would be amusing, I think.

Good chapter, although Keldorn's scene seems to be ... not emotional enough. Or not angsty enough  But it is not his POV and he does not seem to be very emotional type. Not big matter anyway especially since it will be continued.

Oh yeah... in fact more than one trouble.
Yep...

“Maria…” The old paladin looked as if he had been struck. He leaned against the wall and then sank into a chair.

“Maybe we should leave.” Viconia murmured.

I am sure that most of the party would like to.

Yeah... barging in on family matters is not exactly pleasant.

Ah, complicated surfacer's life...But Jaheira is may be the only one who can actually handle the problem. But Haer'Dalis's or Groder's attempts would be amusing, I think.

Good chapter, although Keldorn's scene seems to be ... not emotional enough. Or not angsty enough ;) But it is not his POV and he does not seem to be very emotional type. Not big matter anyway especially since it will be continued.
Well, Groder doesn`t care and Haer`Dalis may just have made a bigger mess. Jaheira is the only sensible one.

I agree that the scene is a bit stiff. Keldorn and Maria will get a part in a later chapter.
