The Council member vanished through his own portal. The local cabal of the Twisted Rune were glad to see him go.

"Not many can open a portal from here," the Vampire mused. "He must have his own pocket dimension."

"Not so strange for one of the Council," the Beholder rumbled. "What was strange was that he expected us to protect him from the Bhaalspawn."

The regular thief laughed. "Whatever for? If their own arts cannot hold him back, why should we risk our necks?"

"He did kill Rejek," the Lich pointed out. "We owe him for that."

"A new tanner will be found soon enough," the Vampire pointed out withour rancor. "And our armor-maker in Immesvale continues uninterrupted."

"We shall need to find more skins for him soon, though," said the mortal mage. "But we also owe the Bhaalspawn thanks, for eliminating Bhodi."

"She never would kneel," the Vampire agreed. "It is good she is gone. But I wonder if we should curtail our operations until the Bhaalspawn is gone. By all accoutns he still seeks this 'Irenicus' who was apparently in league with Bhodi in any case."

"Now that is interesting," agreed the Beholder. "Perhaps we should've investigated him a bit more closely."

Any further discussion was interrupted by a purple flash at the entrance archway, up the stairs.

"More visitors?" The Beholder frowned. "We weren't expecting any."

"Busy day," muttered the thief.

"I shall go see what is going on," said the Lich.

He approached the steps, to see Adrian and his party staring down at them, nonplussed.

"Stop. How did you find this place?" asked the Lich, not unreasonably.

"Rogue stones can do many wonderous things," Adrian said. He did not smile. "Hand over the Council member, if you like."

"Oh really," the Lich chuckled. "We had thought to spare you, Bhaalspawn, but it seems the Twisted Rune shall have some amusement today." He teleported back to the others, and they prepared themselves.

The thief and the vampire advanced slowly, warily.

Not warily enough....
The road to the abyss may be paved with good intentions, but it is those with bad intentions that race down that road as fast as they can.
